After just a moment she reappeared in what looked to be a forest clearing. Tall trees reached up to the sky, making it hard to see very far in any direction. Sunlight bled through the breaks in the trees, making it bright enough to get a good look around.
She took a moment to move around, wiggling her arms, running about, jumping and swinging her staff. Her body felt incredibly light, completely unlike how much actual movement like this would exert her. This VR really WAS impressive…
After she’d gotten used to moving around, she put down her staff before gently reaching up to her head.
Sure enough, two very fuzzy ears met her hands, and they twitched as she fidgeted with them. She could even feel herself touching them, even though she was almost certain she didn’t have fox ears in real life… probably.
The same was true of her twin tails, finding she could move them about freely like two extra limbs, thought they weren’t strong enough to even carry her staff it seemed. Oh well.
She’d been dumped into what was surely the solo tutorial area. Otherwise, it’d be too crowded to really do anything at all on the launch day of a full MMO.
A quest log popped up as she looked around, prompting her for a few standard tutorial quests to do before she could enter the game world proper.
The first was simple enough: Locate and hunt a single forest spider. Fairly standard fantasy RPG faire.
It wasn’t long before she’d found one nearby, perched on a large rock.
It didn’t even aggro on seeing her, it merely looked over briefly, before returning to fiddling with its web. Guess she didn’t register as much of a threat.
“Sorry for this, lil guy…”
She raised her staff up high, the gnarled up end of it good enough to serve as a bludgeon. She closed her eyes, and swung down as hard as she could, hoping to get it over with fast-
Bonk.
…?
She opened her eyes…. to a decidedly alive spider.
Clearly she’d missed and hit the rock below.
This time she kept her eyes open, to actually aim properly, swinging again-
Bonk.
…
She’d… hit the spider directly.
The staff had hit it dead on, not a part of it hitting anything BUT the spider.
And yet the spider remained, glancing over at her, confused but still very alive.
Bonk bonk bonk bonk bonk.
Monica swung with furious abandon, her staff a blur through the air as she unleashed her ultimate combo string, trying out vertical swings, horizontal swings, stabs, bashes, even throwing the stick aside and just punching the bug bare-handed.
Not a single point of damage dealt.
A horrible realization dawned on her slowly.

Panting, she finally stopped her assault, the spider no longer even bothering to glance at her attempts as it worked on it’s web.
“Fine, then…. Shock!”
A bluish bolt of electricity leapt from her hand at the spider! It jolted up, it’s body vibrating rapidly.
...Until eventually it stopped.
...It’s HP remained completely full.
It looked at her with annoyance, chittering angrily at her as it waved its limbs.
“Not even…? Guh, Sap!”
A bit of greenish energy drained from the spider, it’s chittering getting a bit weaker, with a notification popping up.
[MP +2]
It was… a mana drain spell. Not health drain.
She’d finally realized a fatal error, scrambling to her status screen.

It was… exactly what she’d been afraid of.
She knew it had said it lowered her physical attributes but… she was firmly in the NEGATIVE amounts for strength, with no other means of dealing damage available from her class.
There was no way for her to complete the single first action expected of her, to kill a single of the weakest enemy in the game.
She had spells to start with, but neither was able to deal damage of any amount.
Even if she found a rock or stick she could count as a weapon, it surely wouldn’t have enough strength to outweigh her massive deficit in strength.
There were no other players in this solo area for her to get help from.
Somehow, someway…
Monica Furdel had made herself a completely, wholly, utterly harmless witch.
