—the aftermath of a long-fought war between the world of Eltshion and its subjugator, the Demon Lord.
The grounds of the battlefield were bathed in blood split from humans, demi-humans and demons alike. Among the countless bodies of fallen comrades and enemies, two individuals stood facing each other silently.
The Lady Hero managed a condescending smile despite the unbearable pain tearing at her fragile human body. “It’s over…Lukterasia.”
The Demon Lord slowly looked down at the gleaming Holy Spear piercing through her withering heart, an enigmatic emotion flashing across her dark eyes. “...to be defeated at the hands of the very race I despise the most, I have indeed brought disgrace and shame upon my bloodline. I must praise you, human.”
“My n-name is Stefania…Your Excellency.” The Lady Hero coughed up blood and inhaled shakily. “T-there is no need for commendation…I’m simply carrying out the duty that has been bestowed upon me.”
The Demon Lord didn’t offer a reply; she gazed up at the cloudless starry sky from which ashes of her kind rained down. Her death would spell the bitter end to a millennia-long domination of the demon race over Eltshion, yet she oddly felt at peace. For a thousand years, she had never come across such an audacious human daring to proclaim herself as a legendary Hero sent by the divine to vanquish her—but their battle had proved her thoroughly wrong.
“Can you entertain a question of mine?” Lukterasia said quietly.
Stefania wiped the blood on her chin with her remaining left arm and met her gaze. “...yes?”
“Will there be…another human like you…ever again?”
She shook her bloodied locks from her face and frowned. “It’s my wish not to have the future generations of humans go through the same suffering and pain as we…did.”
“I see…” Lukterasia smiled faintly. “Where will you head now?”
Stefania blinked before letting out a hollow laugh. “To where all mortals inevitably go, Your Excellency. I’ll be reincarnated into my next life and be given a new destiny.”
The Demon Lord could only express her melancholy at the waste of a valiant life before her eyes.
“Your E-excellency…” The Lady Hero gave a serene smile as she closed her eyes one final time. “…may we meet again in another lifetime and be…be the best of friends instead.”
Lukterasia let out a sigh and nodded her head with the last of her strength. “...I promise to honour your wish, Hero.”
