My class, 42S03A, had unknowingly gained a celebrity status within the first month of school. Even our civics and chemistry tutor, a young woman freshly graduated from NIENational Institute of Education by the name of Miss Ang, could barely contain her surprise as she read off the name list while taking attendance.
“So, Avery, youʼre the President of the Studentʼs Union?” she said, nodding her head in approval. “And thereʼs also Seraphine, the Head Prefect, as well as the Vice-President, Liam…do you and Avery know each other?”
“We were from the same secondary school class for four years, Miss Ang,” Liam replied from the middle back row, directing a smile in my direction. “Right, Avery? Cheers to four years of friendship and counting!”
“Y-yeah, cheers…” I averted my gaze swiftly; it wasnʼt as though I particularly hated his guts or anything, but if I had to be honest, his straightforwardness and extroverted nature was just something I couldnʼt handle very well even after all these years.
“Mm, interesting. Well, class, I do hope that you all will get along with one another, since youʼll be together for the next two years or so till your A-levels.” Miss Ang walked over to the teacherʼs desk and took out a stack of papers bound together by a red rubber band from her canvas tote bag. “Before we start todayʼs Chem lesson proper, I have to first give back your papers from last weekʼs common test.”
“Huuuuh…” The atmosphere in the classroom was instantly dampened by Miss Angʼs announcement.
“Miss Ang, can you tell us whatʼs the class average?” someone asked, raising up their hand.
“The average is…” Miss Ang glanced at the spreadsheet displayed on her laptop screen and smiled brightly. “Seventy-five, an A1.”
A few people began to cheer loudly while some others visibly relaxed. If the class average is an A1, why should they be worried about failing? It was already guranteed that everyone in the class passed the common test with flying colours.
“Iʼm happy to announce that we have…two people from this class who scored a perfect 100 out of 100,” Miss Ang continued in a cheerful voice. “Congratulations to Avery! Please come forward to collect your paper.”
“Woaah, he got full marks again? Iʼm so envious…” a girl whispered too loudly to her friend.
Her friend directed a furtive glance at me. “Itʼs expected of him at this point, but how does he do it so effortlessly?”
Liam leapt to his feet and shouted, “I stan overachievers like Avery-oppa, woohooo!!”
Hiding my face in second-hand embarrassment, I stood up from my seat and went up to Miss Ang; she returned my paper with a “Iʼm so proud of you, keep it up, alright?” and nodded her head in approval.

“Thank you for your encouraging words, Miss Ang.” I bowed politely and paused. “Sorry, but I thought you said that there is another student who scored full marks as well…who is that person?”
“Oh, are you curious?” Miss Ang laughed and announced the next name on her list. “Please come forward to collect your paper, Seraphine.”
The sound of a chair being dragged backwards sounded behind me, breaking the awkward silence in the classroom; I instinctively stepped aside for her to pass and looked at her.
“Youʼve exceeded expectations this time round, Seraphine. Please continue to keep up the good work,” Miss Ang said as she returned her paper.
“...thank you, Miss Ang. Iʼll keep that in mind.” She turned around—her dark aslant eyes flickering over my face—and promptly sat back down on her seat.
“...” I quietly returned to my seat in the corner too.
“Miss Ang, what about me, me?” Liam asked, waving his hand high up in the air. “Can I get my paper first so that I can copy Averyʼs answers?”
“Iʼll be calling out names according to index number now, Liam, so you have to be patient,” Miss Ang said resolutely.
Liam, however, didnʼt give up that easily. “How about my score, Miss Ang? Just say my score out loud, I donʼt mind!”
She smiled thinly. “Fifty on the dot. Since you scored the lowest, please come and find me after class.”
“GAH—” He collapsed back onto his seat, and everyone started laughing to the point of tears.
Meanwhile, I could only shake my head and sigh.
