Chapter 7: Chapter 07: Police Station

At that moment, we were sitting in the police car and slowly driving down the road. On occasion, infected and cars blocked our path, which we had to evade.

"Scheiße!!! Scheiße!!! Scheiße!!! Wie soll ich das Elli erklären?!" screams the policeman while hitting the steering wheel.

It seems he finally realized what had happened after being silent the whole time.

During one deployment, I spent nearly six months with some German soldiers. Afterwards, I understood almost everything they said and the first thing you learn is usually curse words.

He cursed three times and had no idea how to tell an Elli about the old policeman.

When he looks through the back mirror at us and sees that he had scared the kids with his outburst.

He looks sorry and says, "I'm sorry, my name is Alexander Weiß. But you can just call me Alex."

After we also introduced ourselves, I asked him, "You told me in the courtyard that I would be safe if I came with you. Was it because you had guns or a safe zone?"

"Yes to both. When we found you, we were driving back to our police station nearby after we couldn't find any more people to evacuate.

There were more of us on the street at first, but after a while less and less came back..."

"Yeah, it's obvious what happened to them... I guess you also heard about the purge? Have you guys a plan or a contact in the military?"

"Yes, our chief is on it. With his connection, he should be able to arrange something."

Everyone looked revealed hearing this.

"That sounds really good and also I wanted to say sorry for your partner. He was a brave man. I could see that."

"Yes, he was the best... His daughter is actually at the police station too. I don't know how to tell her that her father is gone." says Alex and gets silent again.

"Wie viele Leute sind in der Polizeistation und ist es sicher?" Maria asked him how many people they had there and if it was safe.

The policeman tells her that the police station is full of people and police officers from all over the city protect the station right now.

While looking down at my bandaged left arm, I wondered how they dealt with bitten people there. If I asked him now, it is possible that he would lose his cool and do something stupid.

So I will refrain from discussing this topic for now.

We arrived at a huge police station nearly an hour later.

It was surrounded by a solid wall. I saw only two weaknesses, a rather large glass entrance and an iron sliding gate that led to the courtyard.

When Alex saw me inspecting the glass entrance, he said, "Don't worry, we already barricaded it with furniture and even when they manage to break in, a security door will prevent them from coming further inside."

I nod at him and look at the wall, where I see policemen guarding the area. I guess they placed cars there and stood on them to be above the wall.

Numerous infected lay near the wall, demonstrating that they were very skilled at what they were doing.

As soon as they saw us approaching, they opened the iron gate and we passed through.

We saw a lot of people roaming around inside the walls.

There were even medics and doctors treating people, or was it checking them? I couldn't see from here, but by the look of the armed policemen around them, I guess it was the second one.

That could get problematic... they may take out every bitten person as soon as they notice it.

The best thing for me would be now to say goodbye to Shana, get a bullet from Alex and then search for a suitable spot to end all of this.

This place looked exactly what I was searching for Shana.

She would be treated well, because she is a doctor and they could even leave the city before it gets purged, if Alex told the truth.

The only problem was that she was only safe in this place as long as the last bullet was fired, or the wrecking ball infected appears... and more infected would show up eventually, because of the noises this place produces.

One policeman stopped us and ordered us to get to the medical area and not get out of the car until we arrived there.

The medical area was not really something special. There was a spacious tent where they probably kept their equipment. The doctors and medics worked under the watchful eyes of policemen with machine guns that looked like MP5s.

I rolled down the sleeves of my sweatshirt, to avoid chaos from the start.

When we arrived there and got out of the car, a woman in a white lab coat stepped forward and looked nervously around while Alex looked only at the ground... it seemed we had found Elli.

She walks up to Alex and asks him in a hurt voice,

"Alex? Wo ist Papa? Er muss doch mit dir sein!" she asked him where her father was.

But he looks down and shakes his head, while remaining silent.

As a result, Elli dropped to her knees and began to cry her heart out...

I could only watch in silence, because his death was partially our fault.

As soon as Shana saw my look, she grabbed my right hand and looked sadly at the scene.

After Elli was taken away, some other medics appeared with a policeman in tow.

Then they started to check the kids, Maria and Alex. After Shana was checked for bites too, she stood to the side and it was my turn now.

Time for the big reveal...

A young medic stepped forward and suddenly looked scared when he saw me.

Looking down I could see why. My clothes were not only torn up in some places, but they were also full of blood, including my shoes.

When he wanted to ask something, Shana stepped in front of me. This made the policeman get tense and he came closer.

"Wait, I'm a doctor too. Let me help you with the check-up." said Shana to the medic.

"Miss, step away, please. You can make your application to the chief later." said the policeman and stepped even closer to her.

This made other people and policemen near the medical area look at us.

But Shana didn't move. She tried to help me get through the check-up, but it was useless.

I wanted to tell her everything was fine, but the policeman pointed his gun at her and said, "Miss, last warning, step back, or I will have to use force."

But she didn't move, so he put his finger on the trigger as he walked closer to her.

What the fuck... he's ready to shoot her if she doesn't obey? When I saw that he was serious, I stepped in front of her.

Then I pushed his barrel to the side, grabbed the stock and kicked him lightly away. He fell to the ground and was shocked, because I was the one with the rifle now.

This stuns the people and policemen around us for a moment. But before they can shoot me, I remove the magazine and then the bullet from the chamber, before dropping the machine gun

Afterwards I raise my hands and walk towards the policemen who are rushing towards me.

Shana looked shocked, but before she could come after me, Alex stopped her.

Seeing all this from a distance, he knew how dangerous the situation could become, so he interfered.

In the meantime, the police had already surrounded me. They ordered me to kneel and then placed handcuffs on me.

The idiot, whom I kicked to the ground, walks to me and hits me with his fist in the face and I fall to the ground.

Not nice to hit someone who is cuffed... I get back up but then hear someone scream,

"Was ist hier los? Aus dem weg!"

Looking in the direction of the voice, I saw an older man pushing the policemen to the side, while breathing heavily.

By the reaction of the other policemen, he must be the chief here. The chief looked at the idiot next to me and asked what he thought he was doing.

But when he tried to explain, the chief sent him away and said angrily that his behavior was unacceptable for a policeman.

I agree with him. Policemen should know how to handle situations like this. Call backup when you can't handle the situation alone and don't start to threaten unarmed civilians, especially not frightened women.

The apocalypse just started and people are already giving no fuck about what is right and wrong...

The idiot looked angry at me as he walked away, but said nothing and disappeared into the building.

Then the chief looks angry at me and says, "Und was ist ihr problem? Einen Polizisten anzugreifen ist ein schlimmes vergehen und dann auch noch in so einer angespannten Situation, sie und ihre freundin da drüben könnten jetzt tot sein."

He said it so fast and in a strange dialect that I couldn't understand everything. Except that it's bad to attack policemen and that Shana and I could be dead now.

Suddenly Alex appears and explains to the chief that we can't speak German, because we are tourists.

The chief sighs, calls a medic, tells him to check me up and orders the other policemen to return to their posts, leaving only three behind.

I couldn't see Shana anywhere, so I guess she was with Maria at a safe distance.

"No resistance, or I will shoot you this time." said the chief and pulled out a pistol from his jacket.

I nodded and the medic started to check me, by looking at the body parts where most people get bitten. Like feet, arms, neck and so on.

But he didn't need to search for long, when he found the bandage on my arm.

He unties it and sees the wound, then steps back and screams, "Er wurde gebissen!"

You don't need to understand German to know what he screamed...

In the next moment, all guns were on me again.
