Jin’s POV
Wow. Just wow. Jin was not expecting the daughter of the Demon Lord to appear in front of him like that. Just when he thought he left Ifezan behind for good, more and more trouble from that world followed him here. At least he could handle the monsters easily enough. The demon known as Estyshana is a whole different story altogether.
It’s not that Jin hesitated to take her life. He had countless opportunities to kill her in the past, and he always took it the first chance he got. The only reason she is still alive is because she always managed to escape before he could deliver the finishing blow, or he had terrible luck and got distracted by something. He could have killed her when they were on the roof, consequences of doing that be damned. Still he did not do it. The reason is simple. He’s feeling guilty.
For starters, Jin has never enjoyed killing demons, nor any of the enemies he has ever killed for that matter. Not even once. The first time he ever killed a humanoid creature- it was an orc, if he wasn’t mistaken- his hand trembled violently for the rest of the day, and he couldn’t eat anything since he would just retch them up. Sure, the orc was a completely different species than him, but the orc had a life of his own. Jin took everything away from him, and he was utterly ashamed of it.
He could keep on telling himself that it was a necessary act every single time it happened, but it still doesn’t change the fact that he has committed murder. He managed to save the humans from harm after killing the Demon Lord. In exchange, he took a father away from his daughter.
Jin completely sympathizes with Estyshana. He truly does. He killed her father, for crying out loud. The demon girl has every right to hate him for it and seek revenge. However, it still doesn’t mean that he’s willing to be killed by her. He’s not going to die that easily, not after going through all sorts of hell.
For now, Estyshana is content with making his school life as miserable as possible. She had been dropping subtle, untrue hints that they used to be a thing to their classmates. Naturally, this sparked jealousy among the boys who lust over the she-demon, and the girls are mad at him for being someone unworthy of her. In a matter of hours, his status of being an invisible student to one of the most hated one in class, possibly the entire school.
Not that Jin cares. He has no intention of ever clarifying things. For starters, they would never believe him. Secondly, if by some miracle they do believe in him, Estyshana would just use her Bloodline Magic to control them just like how she’s controlling the Wakaba family.
Speaking of them, he doesn’t plan to rescue them from her clutches anytime soon. He has no obligation to do so, just like he has no obligation to find and kill all those stray creatures he saw mentioned on the news. He’s no longer a Hero, and he’s not going to work for free. The only exception is that when they get in his way, just like those Hellhounds were.
“Let’s have lunch together, Jin!”
Jin flat out ignores the cry of the one known as the Whisperer of Deceit. He ate his pitiful lunch which consists of two small, plain rice balls and a piece of cheese in quick succession. He then lies down on his desk to sleep.
“Come on, Jin. Don’t leave your precious one alone.” she’s telling him as she shakes him.
He made sure to cloak himself with anti-spell barriers all the time, which is why her magic won’t work on him. Me made sure to turn it on ever since he found out that he could still use magic.
No matter how strongly she shakes him, he didn’t budge. She eventually gave up.
“Seriously, what’s with him? Esty-san is being nice, but he straight out ignored her.” he hears a girl say loud enough for him to hear.
“I know, right? What a jerk.”
“Please don’t be so hard on him. He’s probably just shy and nervous after not seeing me for so long.” Esty says as she ‘defends’ him.
“Oh Esty-san, you’re such a nice girl. Unlike a certain someone.”
Jin also hear some boys gossiping about him from somewhere at the back.
“To think that Esty-sama would ask a worm like him to have lunch with her, unforgivable!”
“Life is so unfair!”
“Death to normies! Death to normies!”
“You idiot! You’ll end up cursing Esty-sama too!”
“Oh, right. Death to what’s-his-name! Death to what’s-his-name!”
Jin sighs softly. Look like his school life will be a terrible one from now on.
When school finally ends, Jin leaves the classroom as quickly as possible. He left so quickly and quietly none of his classmates even noticed that he’s gone. He knows that they don’t know because Esty isn’t saying anything. He didn’t used any magic to make himself disappear. It’s just that his usual presence was so thin he was always next to undetectable.
He’d love to go back straight to his apartment and just laze around until the day is over. However, he has another shift coming up. And so, he has to head straight to the convenience store he works at.
Estyshana’s POV
Ruining the Hero’s life bit by bit was much easier than Esty thought. Never in her wildest dream had she imagined the he is someone unpopular in his class. Now that she is closely observing a human Hero, she realized that he is almost nothing like the ones described in any of the tales she have heard so far.
The Heroes she heard of were charismatic. With one shout, they could rally up the morale and hope of all their allies. Even their presence alone was enough to inspire those around them since their very presence radiates hope. They were also very popular and constantly surrounded by those they call friends and allies. Lastly, they never lack suitors who want to, ahem, bear their children.
By contrast, the Hero Minase Jun is anything but charismatic and inspiring. He’s extremely gloomy, and none of their classmates cared whether he’s around or not. He seems to have zero friends, not even someone to talk to. His luck with girls are non-existing as well. The way she sees it, no girls would want to be his wife. Now that Esty thinks about it, it’s not just in this world. He was always alone and without allies when they were at Ifezan.
Then again, it doesn’t really matter. Esty needs to know more about the Hero so that she could hatch a plan to defeat him. In order to do that, she started to ask around about him. She began with Chifuyu when they were going to the toilet together.
“I’m really sorry. I don’t know much about him since we barely spoke to each other.” she says apologetically.
“There must be something.” Esty says persistently.
“All I know is that the food he always brings for lunch is so scarce he’s probably never full. Also, I met him once or twice at a convenience store he works at.”
So the Hero is desperate for money too. Surprising, considering that he was known to be a part-time adventurer of the highest Rank. He must have made a fortune. Why didn’t he bring any of the gold he earned to this world?
Esty asks their classmates next. They were even more unhelpful. She generally received two types of answers from them. She either gets “we never knew that he existed” or “we never bothered to speak with him”.
At the end of her research, she found next to nothing. No matter. Today is just day one. She has plenty of time.
Chinatsu’s POV
“What do you mean that we’re leaving the cases to UCI?” Chinatsu demands loudly.
Ever since she has joined the police force, she has always controlled her emotions. She knows very well that being emotional would hinder her job. Hence, she seeks to remain calm no matter the circumstances. Not this time, however. She was so upset that her volume was a bit too loud to be used in a civilized conversation. It’s not helping that she’s currently speaking to the Chief of Police himself, Hayashi Tetsu.
“It can’t be helped, Wakaba-kun. The UCI has far more authority than we do.” Chief Hayashi explains calmly.
“That doesn’t mean anything! They don’t care about the citizens at all! There’s no way we could leave the safety of the city to them!”
Date is just listening to them quietly. Chinatsu guesses that even an outspoken newbie like him can read the mood and behave every once in a while. By contrast, she is being a bad role model. She calms herself by taking a few deep breaths.
“Between the three of us, I completely agree with you. I’m not trying to be discriminatory, but I don’t trust that French scientist one bit. However, orders are orders. We have to leave it to them whether we like it or not.”
“...Understood. We will keep our hands off any cases related to the mysterious creatures from now on.” she says reluctantly.
“Thank you for understanding. And please be wary while you’re walking around. You-know-who is somewhere inside this police station.”
“...He’s where? What’s he doing here in the first place?”
“He came to told me in person that the UCI will take over the cases. After he was done, he said that he wanted to take a look around here as this is the first time he’s inside a Japanese police station. Please mind your manners if you ever bump into him.”
“Understood.”
And bump into him they did. They were on their way to the shooting range, and they saw him wandering around at the main hall. He’s wearing a while lab coat on top of his white suit and black pants, and his eyes are looking all over the place.
“Bonne après-midi, Mademoiselle Wakaba. It’s nice to see you here.” Jacques Bouchard, the director of UCI, greets her cheerfully.
“I don’t think we’ve been introduced to each other.” Chinatsu tells him rather coldly.
“We haven’t. It’s just that your superior Monsieur Hayashi mentioned you when I was talking to him just now.”
“And yet you knew it was me.”
“To be honest with you, I was worried for a second when I accosted the first female officer I approached, but I’m glad that I didn’t greet the wrong person.”
“More importantly, why was I even brought up in the first place?”
“As your superior might have told you, the UCI will formally take over all the cases regarding the mysterious creatures that had been appearing all over the city. When I told him to comply, he mumbled that you will not be happy about this.”
Chinatsu shrugs. “Orders are orders. My personal feelings regarding them are irrelevant.”
Bouchard beams at her. “My my, you are such a stickler for rules. I am most impressed. By the way, I have something that I would like to show you. Is there somewhere quiet we could use?”
Chinatsu raises her eyebrow. “What is this all of a sudden?”
“Come now, there’s no need to be so alert. I guarantee you that you would find it most interesting.”
“And you can’t show me whatever it is that you want to show me in broad daylight?”
“It is not that I cannot. However, I would prefer that as little people as possible know about this.”
“...Very well. Date-kun, please find us an empty interrogation room.”
“Got it, senpai.”
Turns out most of the rooms were unused. The three of them sit down at the available chairs, with Chinatsu and Date sitting on one side and Bouchard sitting on the other.
Bouchard looks around rather excitedly. He is acting completely like a grade-schooler, even though he’s already a man who looks at least forty years old.
“I have heard countless tales of suspects being served pork cutlet rice. Will I be served one as well?” he asks expectantly.

“I’m afraid not. That privilege is only reserved for suspects. You, sir, are not one.”
“Well that’s a shame. Perhaps I should commit a crime just to get the suspect treatment.”
She secretly lets out a sigh. He’s acting more and more like a child as the time goes by.
“Now then, what is it that you want to show us?”
“Oh yes, I’ve completely forgotten about it.”
He takes out his phone.
“What I’m about to show you is a video taken at the park where your team found those mysterious bits and pieces of the canines.”
As he had promised, the video shows a bird-eyes view of the park Date and herself were at just hours ago. As the two of them watches, the video shows a human fighting a pack of dogs. Chinatsu could tell from the single look that the human is a male. He is wearing a helmet on his head and a set of heavy-looking armor while holding a two-bladed sword with a transparent blade.
The dogs, on the other hand, barely look like dogs. They mostly have the characteristics of one, but as far as Chinatsu knows no dogs on this planet have skull for their head and paws that gets caught on flames.
“What are those dogs?” Date asks out loud.
“I believe they are a species of mythological creatures called Hellhounds.” Bouchard answers.
Chinatsu said that they were fighting, but it’s more like a one-sided massacre. The one in the armor are moving around with inhuman speed and cutting down the Hellhounds by the dozens. It didn’t even take him three minutes to kill the dogs which numbered at least 30.
“How was he able to move so fast?” she ask in awe.
“That I have no idea. We might have to ask the person himself.”
Next, a tiny tornado appear out of nowhere. The corpses of the dogs got caught up in it and were torn to shreds before falling to the ground. Suddenly, everything the forensic scientist said made sense.
“Is he using magic?” Date asks.
“Don’t be ridiculous. There’s no such thing as magic.” Chinatsu chides him.
“But how else could you explain what we saw just now? There’s also those dogs with a skull for a head.”
Chinatsu has no answer to that.
“Believe me, the best part comes now.” Bouchard tells them.
The video shows the armored person going inside a public toilet for males. Two seconds later, a uniform-wearing student comes out. He’s a teenage boy who’s wearing the uniforms issued by Yokosuka High School, the school her sister Chitose goes to.
Date gasps.
“You’re telling me that a high school kid managed to do all that?” he exclaims loudly.
Chinatsu is just as shocked as Date. However, she has more pressing questions to ask.
“How did you get this footage in the first place?” she asks Bouchard. “As far as I know, there weren’t any surveillance cameras in that area.”
“Let’s just say that we have our ways.” he replies mysteriously.
“And I take it that you don’t have any plans to share that method with us.” she says drily.
“No. We have none.”
“Next question. Why did you show us this footage? What are you trying to accomplish here?”
“A good question, that. You see, even though we were given pretty much free rein by the beloved PM himself, there are still lines we are not allowed to cross. Detaining a civilian, for example.”
Her eyebrow twitches at that.
“You want us to do your dirty work for you?” Date asks with a tone that’s on the verge of anger.
“Please rephrase it as ‘you scratch my back, I scratch yours’.”
“And what will we gain for cooperating with you?” Chinatsu asks.
“We are more than happy to share what we managed to deduce from all the researches we conducted.”
“Are you really going to cooperate with them, senpai?” Date asks Chinatsu.
She looks at the paused video. “Information aside, I’m intrigued by this boy. How he managed to do all the things he did, where did he learn them, things like that. Most importantly, we need to find out whether he’s our ally, or our enemy.”
“I, I guess the last part makes sense.”
“Then again, it might take some time to find him with only this footage as a reference.”
“Oh, there’s no worry regarding that matter. We have already done some research on our own about him.” Bouchard tells her.
“Of course you did.” she mumbles. “How much are you willing to tell us?”
“For starters, his name is Minase Jin.”
Chinatsu feels her body jolt without meaning to. So this is Minase Jin, the boy who is probably the clue in finding out Esty’s background.
“...We’ll find out the rest about him ourselves.”
“And our cooperation?”
“My apologies, but finding out more about this boy comes first.”
He shrugs in an uncaring manner and hands her his business card.
“As you wish. Please call me once you have changed your mind.”
“Is it okay if I have a copy of the video?”
“Of course it is.”
With that, the meeting with one of the more prominent figure Chinatsu has ever met is over. Once they go their separate ways, Chinatsu decide to investigate more about Minase Jin.
“Is there anything I can help with, senpai?” Date asks.
“Yes, please. I would like you to investigate about Bouchard and UCI.”
“On it!”
Minase Jin is a supposedly normal citizen, so his data can easily be found. Chinatsu searched around for a few minutes, and she already found most of his basic information.
Minase Jin, age 17, a second year student at the Tokyo Yokosuka High School. He was born in Tokyo. He has a father named Takeji, a mother called Kouko, and a younger sister called Shino. Currently, he’s living all by himself at an old apartment complex called Atarashi Apartment. He has zero criminal record and zero mentioned achievement. The results of both his academic and physical examinations are mediocre at best.
Chinatsu furrows her eyebrows. Academic results aside, there’s no way his got only mediocre results at his physical examinations. His movements in slaying those Hellhounds would make any Olympic gold medalists weep openly in frustration.
Lastly, it is mentioned that he has a part-time job at one of the branch stores of popular convenience store franchise 8-12. This information is available since Yokosuka High requires all students to register themselves should they want to work part-time job.
“How’s it going on your end, Date-kun?” Chinatsu asks Date once she is done on her side.
“Please give me some more time, senpai. For some supposedly famous guy, there sure is some little information about him.” he grumbles.
It took him an hour to find even the bare minimum of information regarding Jacques Bouchard. He’s 56 years old this year. He’s remained single all these years, and did not even have a romantic relationship with anyone. He was a biology student at the Sorbonne University located at Paris, France. He was 16 at the time. After he graduated, he went on to work at several world famous institutions that research human biology. Despite his young age, he has received several prestigious awards for being an outstanding researcher of his field, including the International Prize for Biology.
After that, nothing. How and why did he formed UCI, and why Japan of all places, how he got all his funding for the cost to cover his organizations, none of this can be found.
“Looks like he’s a man shrouded with mystery.” Chinatsu murmurs.
“Seems that way. I tried to look for every nook and cranny around the Internet for anymore info about him, but nothing came up.”
“For now, I guess we should focus on Minase Jin first. Now let’s go pay him a visit.”
