Jin’s POV
Jin spent the first few minutes debating over whether he should call Estyshana. Unlike the time with Sulgran, this is pretty much a wild goose chase with no guarantee that the remaining Four Demon Marquis and/or Volrik might appear once they attack the lab. Still, he decided to call her in the end to at least inform her of the plan.
“What do you want?”
Her voice was gruff when she spoke. Still, it has lost some of the edge and coldness.
Jin tells her about what he’s planning to do.
“So it’s a wild goose chase.” she concludes.
“Yup.”
“Can’t be bothered, then. I don’t feel like going out when there’s no real reason to.”
“Fair enough. Sorry for wasting-”
“That’s right! He wants to meet you! So come over right now!” Mika says loudly a few feet away from Jin.
“Don’t spout nonsense, Mika! I never said that! Now give me that phone before I smash it!” Tatsuma shouts.
“Yes, we’re at our HQ! What’s that? You’ll be here in a minute? All right, see you soon!”
“ARRRRRRGH! Look what you did!”
“...What was that?” Estyshana asks.
“My allies. Temporary ones, anyway.”
“...Hmph.”
Based on that sound alone, Jin could tell that she’s jealous that a girl is near him. He’s not going to point it out, though. He’s also a little happy that despite the things between them lately, she’s still acting like a jealous girlfriend, even though the two of them are not even going out.
“So, are you coming?” he tries again.
“Maybe later. I’m watching a drama show right now, and it’s getting to a good part.”
“You actually watch those?”
“This one at least is good. Ever heard of no Kinoo no Yoru?”
Jin could barely stop himself from groaning. Even Nyri, who always prefer watching anime over drama, is hooked to that show, heaven knows why. The short synopsis of it is that a pair of husband and wife are the perfect couple in front of their friends and family. In reality, though, they’re cheating on each other. One thing leads to another, and both of them are beginning to suspect the other of committing infidelity. And so, the race to collect as many evidence as possible to gain the upper hand in the divorce court has begun.
“I’d prefer it if I didn’t.”
“It’s really fun to watch, you know? Especially whenever the husband and wife are trying to outsmart each other.”
“Nah. I tried watching it once. Wasn’t my cup of tea.”
“Well, your loss.”
She wasn’t probably trying to sound nonchalant, but Jin could still detect a hint of loneliness at her tone. She was probably eager to talk to him about it.
“...Fine, I’ll watch this episode later online.” Jin relents.
“Really? You will?” she asks without even bothering to hide her excitement.
Suddenly, Jin doesn’t mind going through the torture of watching the show. Anything to make her happy.
“Yes, yes. Now please excuse me. I have others to call.”
“Sure. Just remember to watch- hey, what are all of you smirking about?” she demands all of a sudden.
“I beg your pardon?”
“Not you, the Wakaba family. They’re keep on sneaking glances at me while grinning. Even Uncle Shun is doing it.”
“I’m sorry Esty. I just couldn’t help it.” Jin hears the voice of Shun-san says.
“Just don’t mind us and continue with your flirting with Minase-kun.” Kana-san’s voice is heard next.
“Wha-? I’m not flirting with him, Mama Kana! And how did you even know that I was talking to him?”
“Oh come on, anyone with eyes could tell from your happy expression.”
“Look, I don’t care that you want to spend some couple time together. Do it in a room, though. The rest of us are trying to watch the television here.” Sergeant Wakaba pleads.
“For your information, we’re talking about serious stuff here! We definitely were not “spending some couple time”!”
“Really? It sure didn’t sound serious halfway through your conversation.”
“Hush, you two. The husband is about to meet his secret lover again.” Jin hears Wakaba urging.
“Just call me back later, okay?” Estyshana asks Jin.
“Sure, sure. Enjoy your show.”
Once Jin hangs up, he notices that one of the windows of the room has been opened.
“The girl Miko mentioned will be here soon, so I left this open for her so that she can come inside.” Mika explains when she noticed Jin staring.
“Um, haven’t she heard of the door?”
“Not when Tatsuma is involved.”
“I hope you’re happy. I really do.” the person in question says grumpily.
“You bet I do. I missed all those times where she was all clingy with you.” Mika says with a smirk.
“Yup, yup. They were always so heartwarming~.” Miko agrees.
““Heartwarming”? More like-”
“TATSUMA-SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMA~!”
A silhouette comes inside the room they were in through the window like a gust of strong wind and charges towards Tatsuma. The boy could barely react before being rammed by it. Or to be more precise, being embraced tightly by a blonde girl with blue eyes. She is wearing a black lolita dress and a pair of black knee boots.
“To think that Tatsuma-sama would want to meet me! I am the happiest girl in the world right now!” she cries.
“Let go of me, Eve!” Tatsuma demands while trying to push her away. “Miko! Mika! Help!”
The twins look on with an amused expression on their face. None of them moved to help their younger brother.
“Are the two of you deaf?”
“Sorry, but no. This is too fun to watch.”
“Yup yup~.”
“You damn traitors~!”
Jin decides to look on as well. He’s an outsider here, so he felt that he has no right to interfere. Besides, as Mika said, this is too fun to watch. However, the girl stopped her shenanigan when she saw Jin.
“Oh my, is that Silver Wolf?” she asks.
“That’s right.” Tatsuma confirms.
The girl let goes of him and faces Jin. She then do an elegant curtsy.
“Good day, dear sir. My name is Evelyn King. Pleased to make your acquaintance.” she introduces herself.
The passionate girl in love from before is completely gone. Replacing her is a well brought-up lady, the epitome of elegance.
“Nice to meet you.” Jin replies with a nod.
“If I may be so bold to ask, to what honor do the Ryuuzaki family owe for your visit?”
She’s being polite, but Jin could tell that should he gives her an answer not to her liking, he’s going to be attacked.
“I came here with a proposal to form an alliance.”
“I see. So you are not here to cause trouble.”
“No, I’m not.”
“That is good to hear. However, you might be disappointed to know that Tatsuma-sama is a very family-minded man who would never join forces with an outsider.”
“Actually, I plan to do just that.” Tatsuma tells her.
King took a while to process what he just said.
“Pray tell, is that a jest?” she asks.
“No, I’m being completely serious.”
King looks at the twins. The two of them nod at her.
“Well now, that sure is a surprise. To think that Tatsuma-sama, of all people, would seek help from outsiders. Did you perhaps gotten over your obsession of our late father?”
“Kind of.” Tatsuma replies while looking a bit embarrassed. “I know I was a huge jerk, but still-”
Something that King said made him pause.
“Wait a second. What do you mean by “our” late father?” he demands.
“We’re already married, so your father is my father-in-law, no?”
“No! We weren’t married, for crying out loud!”
“Say, can we wrap this up and get on with the important stuff?” Jin interrupts.
“Right! Good idea! Let’s get down to it!” Tatsuma agrees a bit too enthusiastically.
“By the way, Zheng and Fang have agreed to come over as well.” Mika reports.
“Since when did you call them?” Jin asks.
“I didn’t. I texted Fang. She’s…not really a talker.”
“Fair enough. Now, excuse me as I need to make some more phone calls.”
“Please take your time. Meanwhile, Tatsuma-sama and I shall be spending some quality time together.” King tells him as she’s clinging to Tatsuma again.
“Get back here as soon as you can, got it? Rather, please come back ASAP! Please!” the yakuza leader pleads while being on the verge of hysteric.
“No promises.”
It’s really rowdy here, so Jin had to go to the staircase that’s meant to be a fire exit. He texted the Graylock sisters, Ayumi and Kubo to inform them of the alliance he formed with the Ryuuzaki Group, and that they will be dealing with the UCI together. He also added that he could use their help.
All of them agreed to help, although Kubo was a bit hesitant.
“Are you sure about this?” he asked Jin through a text. “I’ve been hearing nothing but nasty rumors about that gang.”
“I’ve talked to the head for a bit. He’s a bit reckless and cold, but doesn’t look like the type who would do anything to get rich. What you heard were probably, as you said, just rumors.”
“Well, if you say so. So, do you want me to come over right now?”
“No. It would be bad if they decided to check your background or something. Best to do this with a video call.”

“Got it.”
Next, he looked over his contact list on his phone and sees Date Jr.’s name and phone number.
Hmm, what to do? Given her personality, she would most probably rather die than joining forces with a yakuza group. There’s also the fact that her parents are in league with the UCI. Even so, Jin would feel bad if he left her out. In addition, she might take things into her own hands if she found out about this the hard way. Yup. Best to be upfront about it. He also decided to call her instead of just sending her a text.
“...I see.” was all she said when he was done telling her about the alliance and the allegations about them backing UCI.
“Mind, the part about them and UCI is just a rumor. They’re probably innocent. On that note, don’t you dare rummage around their stuff. It’s too dangerous.”
“I will not.” she promises. “As for the alliance, I will gladly show up when it’s time for battle. However, please forgive me for not joining in the war council, should you ever be having any.”
“Understandable. I’ll call you back soon.”
For the entire time he was on the phone, the talking voices coming from the room next door have never stopped. They mostly belong to Tatsuma and King. To summarize their conversation, it’s a one-sided delusion of King which involves getting married, having kids, moving to a house with a huge garden, etc with Tatsuma denying and declining every single thing she said. Jin figured that he has to go back before things get out of hand.
“How did it went?” Tatsuma asks Jin while frantically pushing away King.
“They’ll be joining the strategy meeting by using video call.”
“Fair enough. That said, are they any strong?”
“First off, there are more important things than strength. Secondly, we’re not going to bulldoze our way in one of those labs, if that was your plan.”
Tatsuma furrows his eyebrows.
“We’re not?”
“We’ll talk about this once your allies are here. Agreed?”
“...Fine.” came a rather reluctant reply.
“By the way, how many ability users have you recruited so far?”
“Five, excluding all of us here.”
Jin almost forgot something.
“Do you have a subordinate named Shimada Kazuki?” he asks Tatsuma.
“Shimada, you say? Yeah, he’s one of us. He just joined like, um, a week ago.”
“Is he one of your ability users?”
“No. He wanted to be one, but I reckoned that it’s too early for him.”
“Can you keep it that way? He has a younger sister waiting for him at home. The least he could do is stay away from battles that might kill him.”
Tatsuma shrugs.
“Sure. Like I said, it was too early for him.”
Good. That’s one thing taken care of-
“EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE~!!!”
A loud voice was heard from below, and it was really, really loud. The person was so loud the entire floor vibrated for a second.
“...What was that?” Jin asks.
“Zheng, the loud one.” Mika informs.
“The REALLY loud one.” Miko adds while shuddering.
The girls with the laid-back voice starts rummaging through all her pockets.
“Oh no, where did my earplugs go? I’ll go deaf without them~.”
Mika takes a pair of orange earplugs out of her shirt pocket.
“Here.” she offers.
“Thank you, Mii-chan~.” Miko says to her twin gratefully. “But what about you?”
Mika takes out another pair of earplugs.
“You think I’m going to walk around without extra pairs? I’ve learned my lesson from the last time. Do you need a pair, Eve?”
The girl takes out her own pair of earplugs.
“Worry not. I have come prepared.”
…Suddenly, Jin is very worried about the safety of his ears.
“Well, you guys stay here. I’m going down to greet them.” Tatsuma tells the rest as he takes out a pair of earplugs from his pants pocket.
“As your spouse, I shall accompany you.” King says.
“Stay here with the rest of them. I’m not going to take no for an answer.” she was told firmly.
King looks dejected, but obeyed anyway.
“Would you like some tea?” Mika asks King while Tatsuma is gone. “I still got some good Darjeeling tea leaves around.”
“That is very kind of you. I would love to have some.” King replies gratefully.
“What about you, Silver Wolf? You feel like having something?”
“Iced green tea with a straw, please.”
“Coffee with three shots of Espresso, and some snacks~.” Miko requests.
“All right. Wait here while I’m gone.”
With that, Mika takes the elevator and heads down to another floor.
“So, you guys want to play Shiritori to pass the time~?” Miko asks Jin and King while waiting.
“Your brother will be back soon.” Jin points out.
As if on cue, he starts hearing the loud voice of the Chinese.
“HEY THERE TATSUMA, IT SURE HAS BEEN A WHILE! WHAT DO YOU MEAN? THIS IS HOW I ALWAYS TALK! SORRY BUT I DON’T KNOW WHAT LOWERING DOWN MY VOLUME MEANS! OKAY, LET’S GO!”
Needless to say, Jin could only hear Zheng’s part of the conversation. He doesn’t want to risk activating Eavesdropping Wind since hearing Zheng’s amplified voice might make him go deaf.
“Say, does he really talk with that volume all the time?” he couldn’t help but ask.
“Yup yup~. You have no idea how torturing it is~.” Miko confirms.
“I believe he once caused an avalanche when he was at a snowy hill in Hokkaido.” King adds.
“I’m sure glad that we’re not doing any assassination.” Jin mumbles drily.
Tatsuma soon comes back with a boy and a girl around Jin’s age.
“Silver Wolf, this is Zheng Sheng Da and Fang Ying Xiao. Zheng and Fang, meet Silver Wolf.” he introduces the three strangers to each other.
The boy, Zheng, has long black hair and tied them into a pigtail on the right side of his head. He’s a bit taller than Jin, and is wearing a black Tang Suit, a pair of black pants and black boots.
As for the girl, she’s a head shorter than Jin. Her bangs are covering her most of her eyes, and there are two buns on both side of her head. She is wearing a light blue Cheongsam with short skirt, a pair of white thigh-high socks and a pair of light blue shoes.
“SO WE FINALLY MEET, SILVER WOLF! I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO MEET YOU!” Zheng says to Jin as he’s coming closer in an attempt to shake hands.
Jin thinks he lost half of his hearings already. He sneaks a glance towards Miko and King. Both of them are already wearing their earplugs.
“Um, I hope we can get along.” he tells the loud boy as they shake hands.
“LIKEWISE!”
The girl, Fang, opens and closes her mouth a few times, but no sound came out. Jin thought he has actually lost his hearing when Zheng speaks again.
“SHE’S SAYING THAT IT’S A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU. SHE ALSO HOPES THAT THE TWO OF YOU CAN BE FRIENDS!”
Oh, so Jin didn’t go deaf. What a relief. Then again, he might be soon if Zheng refuses to speak at a normal volume.
“Nice to meet you. I hope we can be friends too.” he tells Fang.
The girl nods bashfully. She then opens and closes her mouth a few times again before taking out her phone.
“NOW SHE WANTS TO EXCHANGE CONTACT NUMBER WITH YOU!” Zheng translates.
“Um, sure. I have a question, though. Why are you speaking for her, Zheng?”
“THAT’S BECAUSE FANG IS A SOFT-SPOKEN GIRL, AND FOR SOME REASON, ONLY I COULD HEAR WHAT SHE’S SAYING!”
So she’s just a really soft speaker. And it’s kind of amazing that Zheng could actually hear her.
As per requested, Jin exchanged contact number with Fang. The quiet girl shows a content smile after they were done.
“Where did Mika go?” Tatsuma asks while looking around.
“She went to fetch us drinks.” Jin replies.
“Great, now she’s going to get me a glass of soda or something fizzy…” Tatsuma grumbles.
“You got something against them?”
“Not really. My father did, though. Said that they’re not real drinks.”
“So she’s trying to make you break the habit of imitating your father.”
“Seems that way.”
“You sure don’t sound like you hate it.” Jin notes.
Tatsuma averts his eyes while looking a bit embarrassed.
“I’m, well, trying to change. Bit by bit.” he mumbles.
“Can you stop looking embarrassed? It’s so weird seeing a guy being bashful like some maiden in love.”
“Wha-? I DO NOT look like a girl!”
“Someone should really get you a mirror.”
King offers him a pocket mirror.
“Here you go, Tatsuma-sama.”
“I don’t need one, okay?”
While they’re fooling around, they wait patiently for Mika to return with their drinks.
