The beetle could barely move. Its joints were stiff and its insides were dry. Self preservation was not a part of its task. Not this time. It may had been protected from the sun's deadly gaze, but that was only to conceal it. As it was ordered.
It lay in wait atop a yellow flower near the edge of the forest. The beetle heard buzzing all around it. It just needed one to land.
Eventually, one did.
A male drone bee found its way down to the flower, mumbling to itself about trivial things such as future and life. A simple insect has no real concept of such things.
But that wasn't the opinion of the beetle. It barely had a mind to think, let alone a mind to judge. However, these thoughts did exist within its conscious.
The bee had began to drink the nectar of the flower.
It had not noticed the beetle.
Die.
The word echoed in its mind. It was its final order.
Without hesitation, without effort, without will, the beetle finally let go. It may not have had a mind to rest, but its body finally could.
The bee continued drinking the nectar, paying the now deceased beetle no mind. It was not aware of what was to come, of the great mistake it made landing on that one flower in the sea of them. But it couldn't have known, any other bee could've fallen victim.
It's just unfortunate for the rest that it had to be him.
