As I continued walking through the forest I was continually reminded how strange everything was. While staring at the trees I could make out every little detail along with the flora on the forest ground. In one bush there would be bright red berries dripping juice onto the ground below, and in another tree I could see a red fruit growing from the branches which I recognized as an “Apple of Rejuvenation” from the game. The apple was good for early game players as it would heal 50 hp when most Characters started around 100 hp.
Ignoring the apples I continued to walk towards the sound of running water. I had no idea where I was or what was going on, but I knew eventually I would run into some sort of civilization. As I walked towards the sound of water I could make out something in the distance with my enhanced eyesight that clearly did not belong in the forest. It was a wooden structure, and as I got closer I realized that it was a shack that was right next to running water. The water itself was just a small stream.
I didn’t recognize this shack from the game, but then again the world was huge. There was no way for me to travel to every single point on the map. As I walked up to the shack I could make out all of the details. It was a small shack with overgrown weeds in the front surrounded by a small wooden fence. The shack sported a single door with 2 small windows on either side. In front of the door there were wooden steps leading up to it. The door itself looked ready to fall off of the hinges. It was clear that whoever used this shack no longer did.
I walked up to the door and pulled on the handle. The hinges could no longer support the door as it was pulled open, and the door broke off from the hinges. I looked at the door that I held in my hand before throwing it behind me over my head. As the door crashed into a tree I heard the sound of splintering wood.
Ignoring the loud crash of the door against a tree, I returned my sights to the inside of the shack. Inside the shack was a single dusty room with cobwebs in the corners. The inside could only be described as dilapidated. There was a single bed, a table with a chair next to it, and a bookcase with 5 dusty books. I walked up to the bookcase and read the titles of the books from left to right.
“‘History of Alchemy Volume: 1, ‘History of Alchemy Volume: 2’, ‘Alchemical Remedies’, ‘Herbal Plants’, and ‘The Death of Eliah the Immortal’?” I was surprised by the title of the last book. The others were clearly useful for any player utilizing alchemy, but the last book caught my attention. “Why is there a book about me in a random shack in the forest?”
I was aware that players could make their own books in game, and there was even a system in game where players could have their works published producing many copies. “There shouldn’t be a book about my death though. One I had only just now died, and two this book looks really old.”
I picked up the book from the shelf to start reading it, but the book was in tatters like the rest of the books, and I couldn’t make out anything from the pages. It was now even more clear to me with everything that happened. “Either the devs are playing a prank on me, or this is something else entirely.”
In my brain I wanted to deny the possibility, but with this much circumstantial evidence. It was clear that somehow I had ended up in another world. One which vastly resembles the game, if not the game world itself. “It’s pretty useless trying to gather any more information from within this forest. I need to find some semblance of an actual civilization before I can draw any useful conclusions.”
As I walked outside I could see the sun dipping over the horizon, but I knew that wouldn’t be a problem for me as I would only get stronger as the day turned into night. I continued to walk through the forest towards the setting sun, and resumed my journey.
It didn’t take too long for the sun to set over the horizon turning the sky dark. It was not a problem for me though with my enhanced night vision I was clearly able to see as well as during the day if not better. Soon I could hear the sounds of howling in the distance. The howls brought back a feeling of nostalgia as I recognized the source. They were “Forest Wolves” which most new players, myself included, would fight at one point or another in the early game.
I could hear the pitter patter of the wolves drawing nearer, and their howls became growls as they encircled me. With my enhanced hearing I was able to tell how many were surrounding me. There seemed to be 6 surrounding me. I couldn’t bring up any sort of menu currently that I would usually utilize for my magic skills, but instinctively I could feel the magic within me. It was seemingly thirsty for a battle even if it was just lowly forest wolves.
As the wolves leapt from the undergrowth ready to pounce on me a shadow spread out with me at the center. The shadow turned into spikes which instantly pierced all 6 wolves in the chest at once, and they fell to the ground lifeless. The spell I used was one of my favorites to use. It was called “Shadow Mold”. It was a spell I had obtained pretty early on, and it did exactly what one would think. It produced a shadow that could be molded. It was very versatile. In this case I produced sharp spikes that instantly killed the wolves. It couldn’t even be called a battle.

What was weird or obvious one might say was that the wolves didn’t leave any drops. Instead their corpses remained on the ground along with the flow of blood from their fatal wounds. “With this it is pretty much cemented”. I commented while looking at the dead wolves.
Oddly I didn’t feel a sense of revulsion from looking at their corpses. In fact, I couldn’t feel any emotion from their deaths which I found strange. “Surely I should feel something from something so visceral and real, but alas I feel nothing.” Ignoring my inner turmoil from the feeling of something being lost within me. I kept walking until I reached the edge of the forest.
Arriving at the edge of the forest I spotted a cobble road that twisted and bent along with the forest. On the other side of the road was even more forest. It was clear the road had been built to cut through the forest. The road was sizable enough to fit a carriage with some space left over. I didn’t know whether to head to the right or the left along the road, but without being indecisive I decided to head right which should be north if the setting sun was anything to go by.
After walking on the road for some time and ignoring the fact that my feet still didn’t hurt after being barefoot the entire journey. I came up over a hill, and in the distance I could see the forest coming to an end followed by some grassy plains. Even beyond that I could make out distinctive walls of a city. I couldn’t discern it as a city from the game, but that shouldn’t have been possible due to the city's size. I recognized all of the major cities within the game, but this one proved to be elusive.
“This world is just seeming more and more foreign. Well whatever, I should be able to gather more information once I reach the city.” I resigned myself to just figure everything out as I go. If there are other players I would just have to be cautious. “No one should be able to discern my true identity as long as I have these robes.”
“I should probably enter during the daytime so I don’t draw unnecessary attention to myself.” I reentered the forest and sat on a fallen tree away from the road. Oddly I didn’t feel tired at all despite all of the walking. There was no way I would be able to fall asleep.
While waiting in the dark of the night a few carriages passed along the road towards the city, but none of them had crests which I would recognize from the game. I should probably put on shoes as well. It would be pretty weird to walk up to the city’s gate without shoes. I put on some black boots which I pulled from my shadow. They weren’t special, just some high tier “Mage boots”. They gave a large boost to magic damage, and a small boost to agility.
As soon as morning came I started to head down the road towards the city. There was already a line of people and a few carriages trying to enter the city. I presume the people came from several of the small houses that surrounded the city’s wall. I quickly took my place at the back of the line. There were several guards posted at the entrance. Most of them were for inspecting the carriages, and there were only 2 guards for the people entering the city on foot.
In the game the main way to enter a city was by presenting some form of ID. Most players were affiliated with a guild. For criminal players they would have to find some other means to enter the city. The guards had a tablet that could get general information on a player or NPC. Even this could be forged if someone had the proper items though. For someone without a valid ID they would usually have to pay a fee to enter the kingdom.
I used a scroll of concealment before exiting the forest earlier, so my stats would appear as someone who is level 40. I didn’t change my name though as I held a sense of pride in my name, and “Eliah the Immortal” was considered dead apparently. If someone asks, I will just say that my mother had poor taste.
As I got to the gate one of the guards looked me over before saying. “Citizen please produce a valid ID to enter the city.” I decided I should simply lie to the guard as if I pulled out my ID from the game there would be various problems. “I don’t have an ID.”
The guard looked at me over again before letting out a long sigh. He spoke quietly so the surrounding people wouldn’t hear.“I find it hard to believe that a girl of your stature does not have an ID.” I was only confused by his words. Before I had a chance to answer he simply said “You may enter the city Miss.” My mouth went agape. Just what is going on? Deciding that it would be a bad idea to question my good fortune I finally entered the city without lingering.
