When we entered the forest I decided I would ask Kinna a question. “What do you know about Eliah, my namesake?” She put a finger to her chin in a thinking pose. “Hmm, not much is known about Eliah herself. She was the strongest Vampire Progenitor, and she was said to be extremely ruthless. She even killed the most progenitors out of anyone. It was said that when her most loyal subordinate was killed by Leo the hero right in front of her she simply smiled. The progenitors were said to produce other vampires like themselves, but these vampires were known to be weak to the sun and light magic. Following her death there were massive vampire hunts, and the vampires were hunted to near extinction. It is very rare to hear about any vampires nowadays as they are quickly subjugated, but I am sure you know all of this as it is commonly known. I am more surprised your parents would name you after such a ruthless being.”

I could only smile wryly at her last comment that was mumbled quiet enough that I wasn’t supposed to hear. I see, that is some useful information, but in the game the progenitors weren’t allowed to make vampire subordinates. When the devs were asked about it they responded that it would be too overpowered. “Wait was Re- I mean her most loyal subordinate also a vampire?”

“You mean you didn’t know? Apparently most of the subordinates within her castle were vampires made by her personally. Other subordinates were a variety of different species. It is unknown whether or not they are dead according to scholars, but after more than a thousand years they are surely dead.”

I see… wait a thousand years? I knew it had to be long due to the evidence, but a thousand years is insane; moreover, a lot of these details are different. The more I know the more questions I have. “Last question, What became of her castle?”

“There is an international treaty that forbids entrance to the castle with the exception of the Scholars Guild. The only information I know. Is that the vault beneath the castle has still not been opened, and nobody knows what’s inside.”

I see, now I have a new goal. I need to reach my castle and look upon it with my own eyes. For now though I will play at adventurer, and slowly gather information and resources. I still don’t even know the name of this kingdom or its position in relation to my castle. The adventurers guild had the name of the city on the bulletin board. Apparently the city is called Arbuk. I don’t want to ask the name of the country as I would only draw more attention to myself. For now I will just focus on the task at hand, and then I will visit a library later.

I could already tell we were nearing a wolf den. I could see a small cave entrance that led underground. Judging from the sound of their faint breathing there were 5 of them. Kinna crouched next to me, and as she did I heard the sound of a twig cracking. So much for being a skilled rogue. The wolves had apparently heard it as I could hear them waking up, and 2 were coming out of the entrance.

They started growling and looked over at our position. I looked over at Kinna, she pantomimed some hand signals that I couldn’t make heads or tails of before dashing out of the undergrowth towards the wolf on the left. It was clear that she was inexperienced. I produced a shard of ice and launched it at the wolf on the right piercing its skull. As it’s body fell over limp I looked over to Kinna. The wolf was gnawing on the leather armor on her left arm, but she repeatedly stabbed its neck with the dagger in her right hand. Eventually it fell over.

The last 3 wolves witnessing their comrade die all started to run at Kinna. I pierced 2 of their skulls with more ice shards as the last one pinned Kinna to the ground by her shoulders. She quickly gripped the dagger with both hands and thrusted it upwards into its chest, and the wolf fell on top of her. It took her a bit to unpin her body from the wolf, and afterwards she was laying on her back panting heavily.

“Haa…Haa I thought I would die! No, if you weren’t here I would surely be dead.” She got up and tried to run over to me with her arms open presumably to hug me. “Thank you Eliah… Oof” As she was about to reach me I sidestepped her, and she face planted after tripping over my foot. “Just what are you doing so readily trying to touch me?”

She sat up with tears in her eyes. “Eliah is so cruel. I merely wanted to express my gratitude for saving me with a hug. By the way, you are amazing with ice magic! I’ve never seen something like that!” Apparently even spells that I would consider low level would amaze this woman. She stood up and returned to her usual demeanor.

“We should return to the guild, and inform them to let them pick up the corpses. We only need to take the fangs as proof of subjugation.” Before she was about to bend over and cut off the fangs I enveloped all of the corpses with shadow swallowing them into my inventory. Kinna looked at me astounded and a little fearfully. Ah, shit I messed up.

“E-eliah isn’t shadow magic forbidden by the church? H-how do you know shadow magic? What’s more is high level storage magic. Are you a cultist?” How should I answer. Should I just kill her? But I can’t kill someone who has given me so much useful information. Especially not now. What to do? She saved me from my inner doom with her next words.

“There is no way my cute savior Eliah would be a cultist! She is my hero after all!” I see, I should have realized this sooner. This person, no Kinna, is a genuine bonafide idiot. I sighed and decided to respond to this bonobo. “The mage that taught me knew shadow magic. He never said anything about it being forbidden though, and the highest level I know of the magic is storage.”

“I see, but between you and me you shouldn’t let anyone know you can use any form of shadow magic. If word gets out the church could issue a witch hunt. Well it's not like I care what the church thinks. Even if Eliah uses shadow magic she is adorable, and cute is justice!” She started hugging herself. I see, along with being an idiot this person is a pervert. How is she still alive? Maybe I should end her suffering?

She had a look of ecstasy on her face before saying “Say, Eliah…” What does this idiot want now? “Can I give you a hug for saving me?” I’m sure my annoyance was visible on my face. “No, first of all I wouldn’t have to save you if you weren’t an idiot, and secondly, shouldn’t we head back now? It is getting late.” My headache could not take any more of her ramblings, and the sun was starting to dip. Technically my headache would leave as it turned dark, but I feel like if I keep talking to her at night it will remain. She answered in the affirmative and we started to head back.

Once we reached the road I pulled a wagon out of my inventory and set the wolves on the wagon. Hopefully this would draw less attention to myself. I started pushing the wagon when I heard Kinna say “Hey aren’t you too strong? Even after all that you aren’t tired and now you are pushing a wagon with 5 forest wolves.” Yea, maybe some attention will be unavoidable. At this point my headache is forcing me not to care what people say about a small woman pushing a wagon. Yea I don’t care.

We arrived at the gate and the guard looked at me incredulously. Ignoring his look we produced our guild plates and were let into the city. Upon arriving at the guild I had a few spectating adventurers outside the guild who were admiring my work. I left the wagon outside and we walked up to the receptionist desk with the request in hand. The receptionist looked over the request and stated. “For the failure of this request there will be a penalty…”

I cut her off by putting my hand up. “The request is completed 5 wolves are outside in a wagon.” The receptionist had a look of surprise on her face, but before she could speak an adventurer who entered after me spoke in a deep voice. “She speaks the truth. I saw her wheeling the wagon up here myself.” I was about to thank this rude adventurer when he spoke again. “I don’t know how they did it, but there are definitely 5 wolves. Whether they killed them or they were purchased from another adventurer, the guild has to accept them.”

“I seem, you ladies will have to wait until tomorrow for us to process the wolves and receive your payment. I hope that will be fine. We can give you 2 silvers now, but to receive more you will have to come tomorrow.” The receptionist told us. “We will receive the 2 silvers now and come tomorrow.” We accepted the 2 silvers and me and Kinna turned to leave the guild.

Exiting the guild I could make out the man's features. He must have been about 6’5 and he was muscular. His lower face was covered by a mask while his upper face had a rough texture. His hair was short and brown the same color as one of his visible eyes. The other eye was covered with an eyepatch. If I wanted to I could use a skill to peek under his mask, but I didn’t really care. Also if someone had a skill that would cause them to notice I would just draw more attention to myself.

Me and Kinna moved past the man and out of the guild. From within the guild I could hear the receptionist speak to the man. “Brin, you know you shouldn’t interfere with the newbies.” Apparently his name was Brin. “Don’t worry about it. Besides, I think I just saw something interesting.”

I turned my attention to Kinna who started to speak. “Do you know who that is? Brin is a platinum ranked adventurer. He is the most famous adventurer in the city. He has even felled a cave troll by himself. Word is that’s how he lost his eye.” Cave trolls were easily beaten by most level 40 players. The highest variant of cave trolls could be beaten by players of level 60 if they had decent skill. If I were to assume that this was a higher variant of Cave troll. Then that would mean that Brin was at least level 60. I guess I’ll pretend to be impressed.

“Wow, so this Brin guy is amazing?” Kinna looked over at me and frowned. “Don’t just pretend to be impressed.” Oh what gave it away? My bored voice or my inexpression? “He is pretty amazing to people in this city, but I never liked his personality. He is definitely full of himself, and it is just creepy. I’m surprised that receptionist has the hots for a guy like that. Enough about Brin, are we going to share a room at the inn?” I didn’t like the look in her eyes when she said that last line.

“We will get separate rooms. How much is it for a night in the inn?” I decided to ignore this idiot’s gaze. “A night at the inn is 50 copper with food included, so we have enough to each have our own room at the cost of a single silver.” I see so the currency denominations didn’t change from in game. 100 coppers for 1 silver and 100 silvers for 1 gold ignoring other currencies between.

We arrived at the inn, and I paid for 2 separate rooms despite Kinna’s protests. I went to my separate room. I had a lot to think about tonight with all the information I learned. I wasn’t tired though, so I wasn’t going to sleep. I had a sinking feeling that I would never be able to experience sleep again. I wonder what else I couldn’t experience?
