Cai

The morning after a won battle was always the calmest. I woke up, prepared to cut my routine short, just so I could meet up with Lucian sooner. I thought that maybe he would appreciate us sharing breakfast together, where I considered having to act professional in front of the court. They couldn’t know about us being involved with each other, beyond the responsibilities of the sun god’s breeding ritual. I felt it was hardest on me, having to travel with him as a comrade and not a mate. Because Lucian was everything I wanted in a man, and more…

I couldn’t stop with these dirty thoughts of him. There was never a bridge between lust and love with the way I felt about Lucian. From the way he took me that night, to the way he held me in my arms. Lucian was rough but gentle and sweet at the same time, my heart racing at the idea of us doing it over and over again. I felt a blush rise up my cheeks from how forceful he was, his girth stretching me out and seeding me, letting these animalistic desires further taint my oath.

But in the end, those thoughts left me shattered inside. While I couldn’t go against the sun spirit’s rules, I felt like I already did, for having such deep emotions for Lucian. I prayed I wouldn’t be shunned from his kingdom when all was said and done.  I finished combing my hair out, and looked in the mirror one last time, to gawk at all those little details he appreciated from me.

“Lucian…”

For once, I felt like a woman and not a tool for retribution. It was a lovely feeling, to have someone care for you beyond what you can provide for them. I found myself enjoying being in my own skin, a smile stretching on my face, being happy again after a long time. Not to mention, he left me feeling stronger after our session, my light capacity amplifying seemingly overnight.

This feeling of being together was bittersweet, but I couldn’t get enough of it. I walked out my bedroom hoping to meet Lucian. But I didn’t walk very far, noticing Elrie’s bedroom door open. The idea of her being around my Lucian changed my mood, making me bitter, and moving my feet toward her door.

I was still very skeptical about her being a shadow elp, and I wasn’t sure what to make of her. Naturally, dark was attracted to light, which was why Lucian’s inability to let her go rubbed me the wrong way. And since Lucian hadn’t confirmed anything with Kiran’s pendant, I had to expect the worst.

She sat by the vanity mirror, learning about her new clothes, adjusting the bra strap under her brown blouse. The girl was inches away from lifting her hat off her head, her face giving off worried expressions, until she caught my reflection in the mirror, Elrie jumping right up and pivoting toward me.

“Cai,” she said, startled. “Oh, um, good morning! I didn’t hear you enter.”

“Why are you always wearing that hat?” I started, Elrie reading the hostility in my voice where I stood. “Your slave owner was trying to take it off of you. Yet, you were adamant about keeping it on. Are you hiding something under there?”

“No…” she was quick to say, pulling down on the long ears on either side of her hat.

“Then why not take it off?” I asked, approaching her.

She took a step back. “It’s very important to me. I don’t want to lose it.”

“No one is trying to take it from you.”

“Cai…” she whimpered. “Please, don’t make me...”

My eyes narrowed on her. “I’m not trying to, Elrie. Just tell me why it’s so important that it stays on your head.”

“Um… I have a condition…” she said, contradicting her words, already caught lying to me. She darted her eyes, her face heating up and her arms shaking.

It didn’t matter.

All in all, her very presence was a threat to Lucian, and I couldn’t let go of my gut telling me she was working with the enemy.

“Elrie, don’t you consider what Lucian did for you enough?”

She smiled shyly, vigorously nodding her head. “Of course! It’s the nicest anyone has ever been to me. I can’t thank the both of you enough.”

“Then you should leave,” I said, that smile on her sailing. “You just said that you appreciated what he did for you, and since… there’s no way of us knowing if you’re a shadow elp, to repay his kindness, you should leave.”

“B-but, I’m not…”

“How do you expect us to take your word for it?”

She furrowed her eyebrows at me, ready to stand up for herself. “Did Lucian tell you he doesn’t want me around?”

“He did,” I lied.

“Did he really?” her voice broke, her eyes getting misty.

“Why would I lie to you? It’s easier for him to tell you through me. The both of us are getting strange vibes from you. And to ensure our safety, we don’t want to travel with a potential enemy. Shadow elps take all kinds, and I’m not convinced that you being a slave is enough proof that you can’t turn around and eat someone’s heart out.”

“How can you say that? I’ve done nothing wrong!”

“Yet. I know how you types function. It is no secret that you prey on the weak willed division and branch your tactics from there. Because once you spread, there is nothing stopping you and your forces from taking over!” I barked. “I’ve seen firsthand what shadows can do, turning innocent lives into a racing game, a sport, to see how fast and how much of us you can slaughter in a short time! Lucian is very important to me, to all of us! And don’t think for a second that I will drop my guard and allow you to take him away from saving us all! It was a well-played angle, but not one that will work with me. You’re lucky that I’m letting you leave and not striking you where you stand! Get out!”

I watched her break down, sobbing softly in her sleeves as she darted out of her bedroom with nothing but the clothes on her back.

Lucian would hate me for it now, but thank me for it later. I couldn’t jeopardize the mission, or his life…
