Chapter 29: The Lost Crypts of Gothmog – Page 93

You knew when you entered the dungeon that you would have to fight. You unsheathe your sword and advance on the ghoul. It seems to be very nearsighted and deaf because it only notices you when you are within striking distance. It hisses and bares its teeth at you, but you are not deterred. You raise your sword and strike at the ghoul with all your might, but it dodges.

The ghoul is a big, ugly creature, and it smells awful. The monster lashes out at you with its claws, but you easily sidestep out of the way. Then, you strike back, plunging your sword into the creature's side. It roars in pain and tries to swipe at you again, but you jump out of reach.

You keep attacking, slicing and stabbing at the creature. Your sword arm is starting to tire, but you're not giving up. You know that if you can just hold on a little longer, you'll be able to find an opening and strike the ghoul down.

Finally, you see an opening and take it. You thrust your sword into the ghoul's stomach and feel it go all the way through. The ghoul lets out a final, despairing moan and then collapses to the ground, bleeding and gasping for breath. Its eyes meet yours, and there's a look of terror there before it finally dies. You stand over it, sword at the ready, but it’s clear that the ghoul is finished. You have won the fight.

As you are searching the corpse for loot, the south door suddenly glows a virulent green. Then it disappears. You run back to the place where it was, but the south wall is now an unbroken expanse of stone blocks. There’s no trace left of the door, and there is no longer any way out of this room but the north door.
