" Why?" Raquel couldn't help asking as she raised her gaze to look at Becca again.
" I don't know. Maybe because I know how it feels like to be vulnerable, how it feels to cry in a bathroom for something that wasn't even your fault and when I saw you crying, I don't know but for some reason, I thought you don't deserve the problem you are being pushed into. You shouldn't sacrifice yourself for your family's financial problems by marrying a douche." A small smile played on Becca's lips as she spoke.
At first, Becca thought she was crazy and pathetic for wanting to help a past enemy but was kinda surprised to find out that there was a strange feeling of satisfaction in it. She didn't understand why but for some reason helping Raquel made her feel the same way she always did after helping out the children in orphanages. Satisfied. Grateful for the life she had.
The orphanage children never prayed to live there or even to be orphans, life was just unfortunate to them. Same thing applied to Raquel, she never prayed for her family to experience bankruptcy. No one in there right mind would want their family to lose all they have worked hard for, not to talk of being a sacrificial lamb to help the situation.
" Woah" Raquel muttered, sounding detached. " I never expected this from you, Becca."
" Are you surprised that not everyone is mean or are you just shocked that I didn't ridicule you at your breaking point just like you did to me?" Becca asked, her jaw twitching.
" To be honest, both." Raquel answered, fiddling with her fingers on the table. After all her so called friends abandoned her, the last thing she expected was for the person she bullied in the past to help her out.
" Well you were wrong, just like you were when you made everyone in school think I was a lesbian and it was a Catholic School for God's sake. Imagine how I felt when headmistress Martha called me and my parents in for counseling."
" I'm sorry about that." Raquel immediately apologized and Becca scoffed at her.
" Are you? Or are you just feeling guilty? Guilt is completely different from feeling sorry. It's possible to feel guilty about something and still not feel sorry about it." Becca said, drowning Raquel deeper in the sea of guilt.
With Becca's words touching all the sensitive spots, Raquel couldn't help feeling attacked.
" I'm sorry. I really am. It wasn't even my intention to do that to you in the first place."
" Oh, so it wasn't your intention to ruin mine and other people's highschool experience?" Becca taunted and Raquel blinked, opening her mouth to speak but nothing came out.
Casting her gaze down at the table, Raquel let out a defeated sigh.
" Believe it or not but I really regret what I did back then. I was a brat who saw bullying as a way of taking her anger out on the world. It started from playful teasing but turned into something terrible and I was wrong and extremely childish." With the guilt she felt literally choking her, Raquel knew that best thing to do at that point was to apologize.
She did feel guilty about what she did in the past but also sorry as well. No one was saying that hurting people wasn't her intention in the past, it was even why she started bullying in the first place. To make others feel as shitty as she did.
To make her life less miserable in comparison.
Becca stared at how pitiful Raquel looked and sighed. If she had gotten the chance to see Raquel in that state when they were still in highschool then perhaps she would have taken it as the greatest victory ever.
Like who wouldn't love to see their arch nemesis suffer? Hell, most people would, Becca would as well. It should have been exhilarating to finally see the person that ridiculed her get her own fair share of karma but after all these years, after all the heartbreaking shit Becca had been through in her life, she wasn't enjoying it the way she thought she would.
After every humiliation Raquel caused, Becca would always pray that one day the witch would got a taste of her own medicine. And now that God had graced her with the opportunity of seeing Raquel's breaking point, she wasn't feeling amused, rather sympathetic.
Becca knew how it felt to be vulnerable, helpless and from her personal experience, it was something she didn't wish for anyone. Not even her enemy.
" You knew you were wrong but still did it anyway. What did I ever do to you?"
Mental spanking, something she learnt from Johnny and it was just as effective as physical spanking.
Raquel bit her lower lip, blinking rapidly as every fiber in her shook with guilt.
" Nothing, okay? You did absolutely nothing, I was just insecure." Raquel looked up from the table. " When you transferred into our school at the second semester and you first walked down the hallway, everyone's eyes were on you. Your transfer became the school's hottest topic and you literally gain the spotlight without even doing anything, the spotlight I worked hard to get."
" So let me get this straight, you made my life hell just because you were insecure, jealous and threatened by me?" Becca raised a brow as she adjusted on her seat.
' Seriously? Jealousy was Raquel's motive for ruining my highschool experience? Was my happiness and peace of mind that cheap?' Becca yelled in her mind but still kept a straight face as though it didn't bother her or as though she didn't just learn that half of her past misery was because an arrogant brat was jealous of her.
" You don't get it. The spotlight was all I had back then and didn't want you stealing it from me when you just seemed to have it all. You are smarter, funnier and prettier than I am and while your family showered you with all the attention and gifts during their visits, I would be stuck with excuses on why mine couldn't come. I used to sit by the corner watching you have fun with your family, wishing I was you. Wishing your hunk of a brother was my boyfriend." Raquel confessed and Becca's eyes shot out at her last statement.
" What?" Becca asked skeptically. Perhaps she heard it wrong.
Raquel bit her lip, color flooding her cheeks. " You weren't supposed to hear that part."
" Yeah, but I still did." Becca said, folding her arms over her chest.
" Okay, fine. I said it and I'm not ashamed of it. Your brother is hot, the hottest in the land. A panty melter. It just proved even more that you have everything. From having a gorgeous brother to having a sexy demon of a boyfriend." Raquel ranted and Becca began massaging her temples, lost for words.
Seeing as Becca wasn't going to speak, Raquel decided to continue her ramble.
" What's with that look on your face? It's not like I'm lying or anything, Johnny is just so hot. He is beautiful. Like have you even seen the guy?" Raquel asked and Becca shot her a look.
" Yes, I have. He's my brother." Becca sassed and Raquel pursed her lips.
" So... Is he single? Do you need a sister in law? I'm asking for a friend." Raquel shamelessly said and Becca's jaw dropped.
She had almost forgot one important detail and it was whether a bully or not, Raquel was still talkative.
" Raquel!" Becca couldn't believe her ears right now.
" Calm down, I said it was for a friend whose name just happens to rhyme with Maquel." Raquel said, feigning innocence and Becca narrowed her eyes at her.
" Rhymes with Maquel, so as in Raquel?" Becca asked and Raquel's eyes shone with glee as she giggled.
" I won't tell, but you will know on the wedding day."
Once again that afternoon, Becca's jaw dropped before exploding with giggles
" Touch my brother and I will hurt you." Becca threatened playfully.
" Why, it's not like you are going to do anything with him so why let his beauty waste? Besides, you already have Mr sexy demon tied around your pinky so what else do you want?" Raquel whined and Becca rolled her eyes.
" Stop exaggerating. I don't have anyone tied around my pinky." Becca denied and Raquel raised a brow.
" Oh, really now. Stop being modest, Becca. I know a territorial battle stands when I see one and that was exactly how he stood that night in front of me, looking like a predator about to pounce on his prey."
" Okay fine, maybe he was a little scary that night."
Raquel's eyes widened in disbelief. " A little scary? Becca, that a little scary you are talking about almost made me pee my pants." Raquel said and Becca laughed.
" Don't be silly, how can you pee your pants when you were wearing a skirt?" Becca giggled.
" Exactly, that was just how scary he was."
They spoke about more random stuff and Becca realized that Raquel wasn't so bad to talk to. She almost seemed nice and not as bitchy as Becca remembered her to be.
Becca honestly didn't know if it was because Raquel saw fault in her ways over the years and changed her bullying habits or felt straight up guilt that she used to hurt the woman who just helped her.. But either way, it was an improvement.
