Song Wanqing couldn’t understand. Although she had no intention of marrying Luo Tianyuan right now, she couldn’t help but find his mindset ridiculous. “If this is because of Shuyan, I can promise that I…”
All of this was too sudden for her. She’d suddenly forgotten her initial intention of trying things out for two years, and that she’d let him know if they weren’t suitable after that. Yet, when he said that he wouldn’t marry anyone in this lifetime, she subconsciously freaked out. She went against her own plans and even tried to promise him something that she couldn’t guarantee.
Out of the promises she’d made, she promised that she wouldn’t become an abusive stepmother, and that she would treat Shuyan like her own child — with kindness and compassion.
Luo Tianyuan patiently listened to her explanation and he didn’t cut in. After she was done, he said, “Thank you for liking Shuyan, but I really do not plan on getting married.”
He wasn’t just doing this for his daughter, but also for himself.
He believed that the human heart couldn’t be controlled. He knew that most stepmothers didn’t have bad intentions when they first started out.
What’s more, he didn’t need another woman to sacrifice her kindness for his child.
Many people told him that his child needed a mother. However, he believed that it would only work if it were the child’s biological mother who loved the child unconditionally and who was always there for the child. He knew that there was a possibility that a stepmother would cause more harm than good.
Plus, it wouldn’t be fair for the woman to enter a marriage just to become someone else’s mother. He couldn’t guarantee that he wouldn’t have too many expectations from the woman; he might want her to treat Shuyan like her own child.
Song Wanqing didn’t know what to say, her eyes meeting his decisive ones.

Just as Luo Shuyan was about to take her afternoon nap, she heard a knock on the door. She put on her slippers and walked to the door. Through the peephole, she saw the grandson of the grandma upstairs, as well as Teacher Liu’s daughter from one floor below them.
Since she recognized them, she opened the door. The grandson of the grandma from upstairs was around 11 to 12 years old. He had a CD in hand as he carefully asked in a low voice, “Shuyan, is your father home?”
Luo Shuyan instantly knew why they were here.
Her family were the only ones from this block who owned a DVD, other than Teacher Wang and Teacher Li. Teacher Wang and Teacher Li were serious people. Thus, the kids figured that her house would be the best option.
They’d usually watch the CDs that they’d borrowed over at her place. She would usually allow them to do so, since there were only a few movies on the TV and she was already bored of them. There were many good movies from Hong Kong, and she was a huge fan. However, the owner of the CD shop would immediately usher her out from his store due to her young…
“My father is not in.” Luo Shuyan figured that her father wouldn’t be back anytime soon, so she decided to allow them in.
She took a glance at the cover of the CD and realized that this was a comedy movie directed by Zhou Xingxing.

Hurry up! She couldn’t wait!
Just as she was about to invite them in, her door opened next door and Shen Yan walked out. He stared at them.
The grandma’s grandson and Teacher Liu’s daughter made their way into her house. Luo Shuyan was surprised to see Shen Yan follow along.
“I thought that you didn’t like watching movies?” she asked, confused.
Shen Yan glanced at her but didn’t speak.
The two children familiarly turned on the DVD player. A familiar sound came from the TV and they took a seat on the sofa.
Teacher Liu’s daughter had sat down at one side of the sofa, so there was no more space next to her. Luo Shuyan was about to sit next to the grandma’s grandson, but before she could do it, Shen Yan squeezed between them and sat down.
Luo Shuyan was puzzled.
‘Fine, it’s not like we’re watching Mr. Vampire IV.’
So she didn’t mind sitting at the side.
‘Shen Yan doesn’t like watching movies because he finds them boring. So what was he doing here today?’
He had a reason to be here. Yesterday when he was taking out the trash, he overheard two women gossiping. They were talking about how a 12 year old boy had hung out with his neighbor’s daughter, and when the adults came back, the two children were fooling around with each other.
They gossiped about such a private issue as if they were talking about someone’s child who wet their bed or got a zero on an exam.
Shen Yan frowned. He remembered that the neighbor’s daughter that they were talking about was only seven years old.
He wasn’t sure why the adults were so indifferent about such issues… His mother had taught him about the difference between genders from a young age. She’d told him to protect himself and to not hurt others.
Today, he happened to hear someone knocking on Luo Shuyan’s door. He opened his own door and saw that some people were here to watch movies at her place.
She was so careless.
It’s alright. Since Uncle Luo was kind towards him, he’ll just ‘sacrifice’ two hours of his time to watch out for her. He hoped that she’d be more vigilant when she grows up, and to not just indulge herself in food everyday.
