What is so white in the green fields?

Is it a flock of swans, those birds of beauty and elegance?

Or is it a carpet of snow, in its short lived glory?

Neither was it a flock of swans nor a carpet of snow, but the Imperial war camps!

In the largest tent was a table, and at the head of it sat a feeble old man, clad in gold and jewels. To his right was an obese and oily man, dressed more richly that the old man.

Yet the obedience and submission in all his actions showed his lower status compared to the elder.

Not much did they sit in relative silence before through the door came a mighty warrior, clad in chainmail and a sword on his waist. His chest was mighty, shoulders broad, his magnificent mustache large and his stature as tall as a young tree!

“Greetings my emperor,” he said looking at the elder “and to you as well, Lord Fukara!” he continued to the fatty.

“It is great to see you mighty Warrior!” the Emperor spoke, joy clear in his voice “now let us gather the warlords.”

And soon, men of renown gathered in the camp, full of vigor and ready for battle!

“My fellows, the Kothithe has gathered a mighty army! In it three terrible hosts.

In the first one are horsemen, they who eat bread and meat of Koth, with great fiefs yet lightly armed, only a saber on the belt and lance in hand!

In the second one are strongmen, those who lift boulders and uproot trees, armed with naught but a club, yet even wild beasts can’t withstand them!

In the third army are the scum, some have bows, other knives, yet all are cowards, but this one is the most fearsome, for it has a terrible man as its leader!

Oh, how terrible his cries, how terrible his strikes, even the Kothite can’t subdue him!”

Spake the Emperor, tears in his eyes, for their empire might not be preserved.

Yet to the Emperor’s cries, the warlords shouted “Our Emperor, worry not, for mightier hosts we have, and are led by a mightier man!”

“Indeed! My warriors, let us drink undiluted wine and make an oath of victory,” spoke the Emperor with courage rekindled “Or death!”

So they drank the strong undiluted wine and made an oath.

But Lord Fukara was not happy, as the Emperor honored the Warrior above Lord Fukara, and even gave a glistening golden club decorated in rubies and other jewels to the former, even saying to him “My warrior, may your deeds be remembered!”

Biting his lips Lord Fukara devised a vicious scheme…

...

In his drunk state, the Emperor listened to the slander told to him by Lord Fukara about the Warrior and decided to punish him.

“I gave you a richly decorated golden cup, I honored you more than I honor my sons! Yet you betray me to the Kothithe! Be banished from this camp!” said the Emperor.

“What? I never betrayed you, I swear on my faith! I’ve done nothing to harm you or your kin,” the Warrior spoke, his hand nearing his hips, reaching the sword sheathed in silver, yet reason conquered blind rage, so he stopped “But if this is what you wish, I shall leave!”

He walked out, the warlords following him but he said onto them “My brothers with whom I took an oath, I ask of you to not follow me, nor commit revenge for me until the Kothithe is defeated.”

So they obeyed his words, anger in their hearths being subdued…

A mighty five-legged warhorse was taken by the warrior, a spear of battle by his side.

Clad in full plate armor made of black iron, he looked like an iron devil while galloping on the warhorse.

On his left side a Damascus sword, on the right a brass six-flanged mace.

And so he traveled the stony roads, yet could not find the army of Koth.

The day was ending and as he saw a cave, next to It a lake and next to the lake a forest, so he made a decision to spend the night there, in the cave.

Soon upon entering he struck the spear into the ground, tied the warhorse’s reigns, and fell asleep with one eye open.

Soon midnight came and out of the lake came an enormous beast!

It had the body of a bear, the legs of a turtle, three necks of a snake, and three terrible heads that spewed poisonous vapor.

The Warrior’s one open eye allowed him to wake up and unsheathe his sword.

“Come beast! Taste my blade!” and in a flash of light, the beast’s heads were decapitated.

He then cut off the ears of the beast and put them in a bag.

But just as he was about to go back to sleep, a beautiful woman came out of the forest.

Her skin fair, hair blonde, and eyes green like emeralds. Never before has the warrior seen such a beauty, but he drew the sword once again.

“Speak temptress! What business do you have here?”

“My lord, were you the one that slew the mighty beast in the lake?”

“Indeed it was I!” and he showed her the ears.

“My lord, my father wishes to reward you for slaying our foe.”

“Is that so? Then bring me there in a moment.”

And so he untied his warhorse and picked up his spear.

Soon they started the journey and navigated through the forest and after a while he arrived at a mighty wooden fortress.

The Warrior marveled at the building and being introduced to the woman’s father exclaimed in praise:

“I had never seen a greater fortress than this!”

“Tis but a hut compared to the Valland, but nonetheless, I thank you for the praise!”

“Elder, may I ask you where is the army of the Kothithe?”

“The army of the Kothithe… Very well!” and in a wave of the elder’s hand, the Warrior disappeared.

In front of a mighty camp, the Warrior appeared, riding his five-legged horse, his black armor shining in the sunny sky.

He entered the camp undisturbed, for none believed a single man would attack them, so they thought he must be there to submit to the Kothithe.

Soon he saw the tent of the Kothithe and dismounted without tying his horse.

When he entered, inside he saw many generals and ministers sitting near the man he presumed was the Kothite.

“Greetings!” the Warrior said.

“Greetings to you as well, great pehlivan!” the Kothite answered, looking at the man, the only visible human features were a pair of charming eyes.

“Great pehlivan, you who are strong of arms, clad in black! Do you wish to join my army and receive great honors from me?”

“Kothithe, I have received enough honors!” unsheathing his sword the Warrior pierced the chest of the Kothithe.

After slaying the Kothithe he slew the ministers and generals and went outside, his sword bloody, but an enormous man he saw.

“Begone from mine sight and don’t block my path!”

“Do you think that I, the son of great spirit would move from your path?”

“It is impossible for a spirit to have a human child! You bastard, you are a fool who is looking for a father in his mother’s sin!”

The giant man charged, swinging wildly at the warrior who took his sword and blocked many swings, until both their blades broke.

So the threw away the sword and started wrestling, tumbling back and forth across the camp, and being lucky, the Warrior pushed the giant man into the blade fragments.

The giant man screamed, his cries shaking soldiers to the core, but not the Warrior, who proceeded to strangle his foe. He then checked underneath his antagonist’s tongue for he heard gods and spirits have a mark to distinguish them, yet he found nothing of interest.

Getting up, no man dared to face him, so he gathered the fragments of his sword, picked up the heads of his foes, and left after mounting the warhorse.

With a spear in hand, none seemed to be his match…

Yet as he was trotting on his horse, the Warrior spotted an unarmored younger man holding his weapon as though he was challenging him.

So the Warrior, agitated by his sleepless night and fierce battle decided to forced his horse to gallop at full speed, hoping for an instant end.

The spear was between the horse’s ears, aiming at the youth’s torso, but the latter received it with his mace, causing the Warrior to fall off the horse, but he quickly stood up and took his mace.

So the fight turned into a battle of bludgeons and while the bludgeons broke, so did the Warrior’s armor!

So with a smile, the youth charged at the Warrior, who crouched and spread his arms broadly connected to the youth.

Like two wild bulls they wrestled, their chests pushing and fingers intertwined. So while the Warrior was quite stable, he managed to push off the surprisingly strong young man, and launched a fierce kick!

The youth was thrown to his stomach due to the might of the kick so that the Warrior had little trouble finishing the youth, by encircling his brawny arms around the neck of the youth before locking them together and strangling his foe.

The Warrior decided to check under his foe’s tongue, and there he found a mark! A strange word it was!

Underneath the tongue was written the word “Andlát”!

The Warrior simply decided to continue with his journey without thinking about it and arrived to his homeland after many days of uneventful travel.

There his body simply could not bear it any longer and the Warrior died.

“Evil you two are! Driving the mightiest warrior to death is not something many could do!” the warlords spoke

“N-No It was a misunderstanding! Please listen to me on the account of many gifts I gave you.” The Emperor replied, trembling greatly.

“Let his body be ripped apart by horses!” the youngest of the warlords suggested, and so they did as he said.

“What should we do to Fukara?” the warlords wondered before the youngest suggested “Tie his wife and children around him, his mistresses as well! Then burn him alive!”

And they did, just as he suggested.
