~~** Tachibana Shota’s Point of View **~~

I had been dragged around forcefully by Chigusa at the start of the date to play some racing games against her while Kumi-chan and Raita also went off on their own to have fun.

Chigusa was as amazing as could be from all her boasting about being the so-called queen of drift or whatever she was boasting about last night.  I couldn’t keep up with her no matter how many times we raced.  She even showed off her placement on the top slot of the leaderboard and there was no denying her claim.

It just made me wonder why we never did something like this before when we first dated?  I mean, did she not think that I would have enjoyed going on a date with her here to the arcade?  It was fun, and even if her friends Izumi and Saori tagged along, it still likely would have been just as much fun.

After thoroughly being beaten by her, I tapped out, and we both wandered around a little bit until we found Kumi-chan and Raita playing a game together.  It was a co-op version of a popular bullet hell game, though incredibly short, with only four stages.  They were on the second stage as it was, but Raita kept dying and ending their game prematurely.

“Shota-nii, play a round with me!” Kumi-chan begged me.

Raita looked at me coolly, but all I could do was shrug.  With the next game starting, our respective partners stood beside us watching on as we played.

Kumi-chan had been playing these games since she was little, and I was roped into helping her beat them many times.  I’d like to think I had helped her get the skill she had today by discovering the patterns inherent in each stage boss then teaching her about them.  Countless hours were poured into games like these, and one of the things we naturally had with each other was an excellent synchronization.

I flew in her wake, and my own ship acted as if it was a shadow clone of her own as she carefully dodged the bullet spreads by a narrow margin and me immediately moving into the safe spots behind her.  She was doing much of the carrying, I just helped with the additional damage to the bosses.

Stage after stage we captured, though I suffered two deaths along the way due to the fact my skill level simply wasn’t up to her own, and we made our way to the final boss, where we eventually defeated it and Kumi-chan got to show off why she was called the Dancing Fairy of Bullet Hell.  She had no deaths of her own, and it was an otherwise perfect run for her, claiming the number two slot, which was below the number one slot she already had claimed, apparently…

Chigusa was quick to applaud us, but I couldn’t help but feel I had done the exact opposite of what Raita wanted me to do.  However, Kumi-chan would have known if I was throwing the game, and that would have been a much worse outcome for all of us if I had, but I couldn’t exactly tell Raita that at the moment with her right next to me.

“What else can we play..?” Kumi-chan asked.

That took us over to the dancing machines, where Raita was finally able to show off himself.  I… have a rhythm issue.  If it’s an easy song I can sort-of pass it, but when the arrows start flying fast on a harder song, I simply can’t keep up.  It’s like reading a wall of text when you’re sleepy and my mind won’t send the right signals to my feet.

Chigusa was able to keep up a bit, probably just from the sheer amount of time she plays around with her friends here, but Raita was not only able to keep up, but he actually did better than Kumi-chan at it.

But again, poor Raita … not knowing Kumi-chan is also a bit of a sore loser when beaten.  I think this venue was really… a bad choice for them to go on a date to.  All of us really.  I felt separated from Mayuri-san.

I excused myself for a moment, since I wanted to check on my wife’s whereabouts, and I found her near the crane games.  She seemed lost in thought, so I wrapped my arms around her from behind and gave her a surprise kiss on the neck.

I mentioned wanting to play against her again, and she told me to be prepared to lose… which I did.  Completely.  I can only surmise that it had to have been because Mayuri-san was drunk that night that I even had a chance at beating her.  She was just too strong when sober.

I called it quits after a few rounds, and she didn’t seem to mind.  She ended up asking about the consoles I had a home and wondered if I had any fighting games for them.  I didn’t, but I told her we could buy some if she wanted and that seemed to make her happy.

Kumi-chan had located me by herself, waving me over, and I let Mayuri-san go for a moment to go and join her.  Chigusa and Raita were over at the print club photo booth, and I was quickly stuffed into it with her, while Kumi-chan and Raita joined us.

It felt wrong being just us four in here.  I wanted Mayuri-san to also be a part of this, but it was too late for that.  Kumi-chan and Chigusa were both sitting on us guys’ laps, and after all kinds of settings and overlays and filters, the picture taking began.

Both Chigusa and Kumi-chan set up the first two pictures to be a normal one and a couple one with them kissing our cheeks, she said something after that, and suddenly I found Kumi-chan on my lap, and saw Chigusa sit on Raita’s.

The next two photos went similar, but the part with the kissing…  didn’t happen.

Kumi-chan might have been bigger than me when we were kids, but even if I don’t work out much, she wasn’t difficult to move.  And that’s exactly what I did.

I moved her off of my lap quickly, stepped out of the booth, and grabbed Chigusa’s hand before she could even think about planting her lips on Raita’s cheek.

The fourth picture on the photo strip was a blur because of my body blocking the final shot of the camera.

I was jealous, and I knew it.

But I also didn’t want Kumi-chan’s kiss either.  I was satisfied with that privilege belonging only to my wife… and Chigusa.

I knew I was somewhat in the wrong for doing that without saying anything to Chigusa, and that was because I had no right to expect Chigusa to think that way.  After all, we’re not lovers and we’re not sex friends either, we’re just… complicated.

Chigusa asked me to let go of her hand and for a good reason.  I was holding it a bit too tightly.  Once I had, and the other two exited from the booth, Kumi-chan had taken Chigusa’s hand and declared that they were going to the ladies’ room, leaving me behind with Raita.

“…You alright, dude?”

I sighed.

“Sorry… I don’t know what got into me.”

“Naah, I’m actually glad you didn’t let it happen.  I’d rather my Kumi’s kisses be only for me.”

“Raita… how did you end up dating Kumi-chan?”

“We met through a mutual friend a little while ago, why?”

“Do you like her?”

“Well, I mean, she’s a couple of years younger than me, but I’m not going to rush into doing anything inappropriate with her if that’s what you’re asking.”

“No, it’s not that.  I know at least that you aren’t a shitty playboy who’d break her heart easily.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence, dude.”

“But… don’t give me a reason to think bad of you, like I’m doing right now, since you let her do something like that so easily.”

“Can’t fool you, huh?”

“What do you mean?”

“While you stepped away, Kumi was the one who made the suggestion for that to happen.  Even got it okayed by Chigusa and everything.”

This caused me a bit of mild discomfort.

“Chigusa agreed?”

“Yeah, dude, I swear.  I mean, I was surprised how easily she went along with it.  Let me tell you now Shota, I have no interest in Chigusa at all.  Besides, she’s crazy for you, anyway.  I only agreed to it to show Kumi that I can totally not be a jealous dude, even though I am.”

I sighed.

“I also had another reason, and that was to see if Kumi would have gone through with it.  I know you have some history with her, but I wanted to see if she still had feelings for you.”

“Raita… even if she does… I don’t.  At least not feelings as a potential lover.  Kumi-chan was more like a daughter or a little sister to me.”

“Was?”

“We haven’t seen each other in years.  If she’s been holding on to something for me, I had no idea.  Seeing her in that way… is impossible for me.”

“And why is that?”

“That reason is something I’ve been trying to forget since I was a kid, and I’d appreciate you not digging around for that answer, okay?  Just know that I’m not interested in her like that at all.”

Raita nodded, and it seemed like we came to an agreement.

“As for selling you up… I don’t know if I can.  I mean I don’t know how much Kumi-chan has changed since she was younger, but I can tell you three things about her that might help you look good to her, and make a better impression.”

“I’m all ears, dude.”

“Never be quick to anger or violence around her.  Understand that she is a sore loser at everything, and…”

“…and?”

“Hey, are you boys done talking?” Kumi-chan interrupted.

Kumi-chan and Chigusa reappeared before I could tell Raita the third thing.  It’s just as well, since it’s better he figures that one out on his own.

“Just waiting for you, Kumi, babe!”  Raita said with a disgusting amount of sweetness.

Chigusa however didn’t make eye contact with me.

“Anything anyone else wants to play?”  Kumi-chan asked.

“Actually, an arcade doesn’t really seem like the kind of place right for this kind of date…” I said a bit wearily,  “I’m going to go find my wife and see if she wants to do something else.  Sorry, guys.”

I left them behind, and went searching for Mayuri-san again.  When I got closer to the front door of the arcade, I saw her sitting down outside, alone.  I quickly went to join her.

“Mayuri-san, do you want to find somewhere else to go?  I can’t help but feel this kind of place isn’t as fun as somewhere else could be.  Even though I was supposed to sell my friend up to Kumi-chan, what I really want to do is sell my own self up to you.”

I reached for her hand and brought it to my lips to kiss.  She responded with an affirmation of her own.

“As long as I’m together with you, I don’t mind where we go.”

“Then let me find somewhere we don’t have to separate.”  I said as I pulled out my phone to look for a place we could really stay grouped up together at.

She leaned her head on my shoulder in the interim, and I really felt the love from my treasured wife.  I eventually found a place that looked fun, and I showed her what I was thinking of.

“How about this place?” I asked my wife.

It was a bowling alley not too far away from where we were.  Mayuri-san sounded agreeable to it at least, though telling the other three would have to wait, since I was enjoying sitting here alone with her.

“Shota, my love…” She began sweetly, “I want Chigusa to sleep with us again tonight.  Will you let her?”

“Mayuri-san…”

“Please?  I don’t want to have to ask as a mother or a wife… I just want to ask as me.”

“Do you have a good reason for it at least?”

This wasn’t something that she was going to let go of, was it?

“Because it felt right.  All of the happiness I have in the world was there.  My baby girl was happy, I was happy, and you… you were happy too, weren’t you?”

I sighed, a bit defeated.  My own feelings on the matter were complicated for sure.

“I need this from you, Shota.  I need to explore these feelings, and I need to make sense of it all.  I’m sorry for constantly pushing this onto you, and I’ll sit down with you tonight and explain it all in detail… but can you just say yes… for now?”

“Yes.”

Maybe at least with promising that much, I’ll finally get down to the bottom of what’s going on with Mayuri-san.  When Chigusa finally came out and stumbled upon us, she was together with Raita and Kumi-chan.

“So here you two were, is something going on?” Kumi-chan asked us.

“Would you all mind if we changed the venue?” I suggested to everyone present, “I’ll cover the cost if everyone’s agreeable.”

“What do you want to do then, Shota-nii?”

“How about we do a little bowling?  That way we can all hang out together, properly?”

“Bowling?  I remember when we used to play that on your Ninty Wee!  That sounds fun, let’s do it!”

Kumi-chan brought up a memory I hadn’t expected in her saying that.  I had sold that console to buy the wedding ring for her mother back then.  The one that never fit Nene-san.  It made me think unrealistically that it was part of the reason Nene-san and I were never meant to be.  Because the ring didn’t fit her… which was why I made sure this time with Mayuri-san that the one I put on her finger fit so well, she never had a reason to take it off.

In the midst of my memories, a strange sensation sat there, like a foreign object I couldn’t quite comprehend the form of, but understood the existence of it.  It left me feeling a little paranoid.

But I had every right to be.

The events of today would send shockwaves later on in the form of Kumi-chan’s reckless feeling, causing only more problems to come, shaking the foundations of my happy new life once again.
