~~** Tachibana Mayuri’s Point of View **~~

It was a surprise finding Nene-san coming to join us.  I was doing my best to keep up with the younger generation, but having Nene-san around to chat with made everything better.

She bowled two rounds with us, with us two doing quite poorly in score.  I can’t remember the last time I went bowling, certainly not anytime in my twenties or so far into my thirties.  But I did have fun at least.

Nene-san made a suggestion for a more adult game up my alley, so we snuck off like a couple of teenagers and found on the opposite side of the bowling alley from where the kids lanes were, the billiards hall.

Nene-san ordered a beer, and I was feeling good just enjoying my cola.  I did notice my drinking habit had been increasing a lot lately, and I wanted to make an effort not to.  I wasn’t always a big drinker, except on days I wanted to cut loose.  I felt I owed it to Shota-kun to show him my serious resolve by making an effort to not depend on alcohol for any major decisions that involve our relationship.

Shota-kun might forgive me time and again, but I still do feel shame properly as an adult should for the things done while under the influence.

Nene-san grabbed two pool sticks off the wall, and I racked up the balls while she broke.  We were playing stripes and solids.  The first to sink all of our respective ball types, and then the eight-ball, won.  Nene-san seemed like an old hand at this, and I was no slouch either in my high school days.

As we each took turns sinking balls into the pockets, I brought up something I felt was worth mentioning, considering she had something to do with it and all.

“Nene-san, you remember meeting my friend Kanna-chan the other day, don’t you?”

“Ah, the short woman whose house I dropped you off at?”

“That’s right.  Shortly after you left and after she had asked you those sorts of questions… she asked me if I would let her kiss me once.”

“Is that so?”

I nodded.

“And did you?”

“I can’t say I was as interested in it as she was, but she’s been my best friend forever and because I myself have no interest in a woman like that, I agreed to it.”

“And did she enjoy it?”

“I think so.”

Nene-san laughed a little.

“It’s never the ones you expect, is it?”

It was my turn to laugh.

“I guess not.  So let me tell you, as she’s kissing me, the little shit starts groping me.  I mean she’s always groped me because she’s jealous I’ve got such nice breasts while she’s got nothing, but I mean, she was doing it seriously this time while she’s making out with me!  Then right in the middle of it all, her husband Yusuke-san comes home from some golf thing with a friend and catches her right in the act!”

“Hahaha, oh my god that had to be a sight for him!”

“His first impression was that his newlywed wife was now playing for the other team!  So she jumps off my lap, and goes to tell him that it’s not what it looks like…”

As I told the story, Nene-san enjoyed her beer, and me my soda.  She won the first game, and we racked up a second with me breaking the balls this time.  I felt really comfortable around her, to the point we even started lightly slapping each other on the butt as we circled each other at the billiard table.  Something she started on her own by the way, and it felt like I was with an old girlfriend just being that wild, carefree me from back then.

“You know, you really are hot stuff.  Shota’s gotta be thrilled he’s got such a beautiful wife.”

“Oh stop it.  I know I’m old and used up already.”

“If you’re old and used up, then what does that make me?”

“A B-cup if my guess is right?”

“Hey!  I’m a C-cup, okay!  They’re just… on the smaller side.”

“Don’t let the size make you think these things are fun to carry around.”

“Does Shota give you his special massages on the regular?”

“No.  He knows how to massage?”

“Sure.  I’ve seen him spoil Chigusa once or twice on the few occasions I visited him before leaving him to his own devices.  I’ve also been a recipient of them, and I gotta say, he knows his shit.”

“Is that so?  Maybe I’ll have him work out the kinks in my shoulders.”

“Yeah, when I finally found a job and began working again back then, he would give me massages nightly.  Kumi told me when I asked her one day that Shota had used the internet to look up videos on how to give massages and practiced carefully with her.”

“That’s so cute.”

“I know.  He was too good for me…  I wish things were different and I could have returned his love, but you understand, right?”

“Yeah, I understand.”

I had managed to sink all my balls before her and won the second round we played.  She ordered another beer and we went for a third round.  She had noticed a few things in how I handled my pool stick and gave me some advice… hands on advice.  I didn’t mind since she wasn’t doing anything questionable, just showing me a better way to guide the cue to hit the ball.  She also taught me a few advanced techniques like polishing the ball a certain way.  It was kind of fun.  These were things I missed out on always taking care of Chigusa and Daigo at home.

“So, what line of work are you in, Nene-san?”

“At the moment, I’m not in anything.  I’m as useless as can be.”

“So… your partner works while you take care of Kumi-chan?”

“It was at her request.  The job I had when I was getting back on my feet living with Shota was at a florist’s shop.”

“Working with flowers?”

“Yeah, making arrangements was quite fun.  That’s actually how I met her.  She was a regular client of ours.  A few conversations here and there and she invited me out for a few drinks.  That’s when I became clued in on the type of woman she was.”

“You mean a lesbian?”

Nene-san nodded.

“I mean, I didn’t think much of it at first, and she wasn’t putting pressure on me or anything.  She would just invite me out for drinks and the occasional dinner.  Shota and Kumi would just be at home studying or playing games, and she was a breath of fresh air.  Kind of like this…”

“Please don’t get any ideas.  I’m a married woman.”

“Pffft.  I’d say you’re closer to my type, but… even after all these years, it’s not like my feelings have changed all that much with her.  She’s a wonderful provider, but… I do feel like I’ve done her wrong by not being able to love her the same way she loves me.”

“But you do love her?”

“It’s complicated.”

“I’m sorry if it’s a difficult subject…”

“I’m… not the best parent in the world, you understand?  I wanted to do what I could for Kumi.  But Kumi and her can’t see eye-to-eye on things, and Kumi’s always had a grudge against me for what happened between Shota and myself….  Our separating.”

“It wasn’t because she now had two mothers?”

“We’re not married, even though our prefecture allows it.  I… just can’t bring myself to go through that conversation with her when it comes up.  It’s not even the marriage part… I’m not afraid of commitment… but I’ve never exactly accepted having a gay identity.”

“So you’re with a woman, by choice, but you don’t love women?”

“That’s pretty much it.  I mean, I’m still terrified of a repeat of what happened with my ex-husband, so I’ve always stayed away from men… but in the end, I would probably prefer a man over a woman.”

“Maybe you just haven’t found the right one yet?”

“I’m thirty-eight.  Who’s going to marry an old woman like me with past relationship trauma and nothing worthwhile to offer?”

“I felt the same way when I left my ex, Daigo.  I thought I’d wind up never marrying, and dying alone as a single unwed mother.”

“But then you met Shota.”

“And Then I met Shota.”

“If only Arata had a single brother he could have introduced me to, I bet I could have had a happy life like Himari.  You know, as far as step-sisters go… she was a good one.  We hardly ever fought, and we were actually pretty close.  It’s funny.  I was the good sister, and she was the wild one.”

“Shota-kun’s mother was a wild woman?”

“You better believe it.  She used to be in a girl’s gang and everything back in high school.  That’s when she met Arata.  He straightened her ass out, got her on the path to go to college, and then made an honest woman out of her.  It really was a love story right out of a manga.”

“Heee~”  I was finding it interesting to learn more about Shota’s parents.

“Me, on the other hand… I dated a few guys, but had no luck.  I eventually met the guy I married through a friend, and neither of us knew how he was behind closed doors, so I didn’t fault her for introducing us… but that experience ruined me, as I’ve told you.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

“It’s fine.  You can’t change the past.  I just need to keep on keeping on until Kumi’s out of high school.  After that, maybe I can revisit my feelings at forty.”

“That’s not healthy, but I don’t have the right to say that to someone else considering the relationship I went through for twenty years.  But just know if you need a place to escape, we’ve got a lovely couch you can use.”

“Did you know that couch was originally mine?”

“It was?”

“Yeah.  I ended up giving it to my sister as a housewarming present since they only had a bed and a table at the time.  Arata was a hard worker, but he wasn’t rich by any means.”

“Shota said Himari-san was a nutritionist?”

“Yeah, our parents worked a lot so we took turns doing the cooking and cleaning.  But she had a real knack for cooking, and once she and Arata met, she stepped up her game so she could win his heart through cooking.  When she went to college with him, she chose to pursue that.  When they got married and settled down, she never really made too much of a career out of it, but I don’t think she cared too much.  Arata and Shota were her life’s happiness.”

“Shota was talking about what I should do in the future, and that topic came up.  I mean, I wouldn’t mind doing something like that, but I’d probably feel the same way.  I’d want to do it so Shota could always appreciate my cooking, and so I could always make sure their child was eating healthy things.”

“You’re a good woman, Mayuri-san.”

“I only wish that was true, Nene-san.”

After we finished our last game, it ended 2-1 with me beating Nene-san because she accidentally knocked the black ball into a pocket while she still had one remaining striped ball left on the table, otherwise it definitely would have been my loss.

Her phone rang as we cleaned up, answering it once we put the pool sticks away.

“Hey honey, what’s up?”

I guessed it was her partner on the other end from how she casually answered.

“Hm?  I was invited to chaperone a date.  I’m with Kumi, her boyfriend, Shota, and his new wife.  We went bowling.”

She had a small back and forth about what I thought was nothing, though it seemed like her partner was doing quite the stealthy interrogation.

“Yeah, we’re probably going to head back soon.  I doubt it’ll take longer than half an hour.  Mhmm.  I’ll see you soon.”

She ended the call, and sighed.

“Everything alright?” I asked.

“Yeah, don’t worry about it.  I had forgotten to text her to let her know Kumi invited me, so she was wondering where I was when she got home.  When I get back she’ll probably bitch a little and then want to cuddle.  It’s how it tends to go.”

I didn’t want to say anything, but her relationship didn’t sound healthy at all.  I didn’t go out much, but when I did, Daigo didn’t keep tabs on me like that, and Shota-kun for some reason trusts me implicitly.  Maybe I’m just overthinking things?

We found the kids wrapping up their last game, and having had a fun date, though I didn’t get to spend much time with Shota-kun, I did thoroughly enjoy myself thanks to Nene-san coming.

We caught another ride-share taxi back to the arcade, which was central to where everyone would split.  Nene-san and her daughter were escorted home by Shota-kun’s friend Raita, and the three of us had an enjoyable walk home as the sky was filled with red as the sun set.

We went inside, and since we had eaten, no one was particularly hungry.  That left us three sitting on the couch together. So, I figured now was as good a time as any to bring up the matter of tonight.

I just hope I can convince Shota that I really am serious.
