~~** Watanabe Chigusa’s Point of View **~~

“I’ve already talked with Chigusa about it.  It’s our business, not yours.”

“So, some uggo, huh?”  Saori said while quickly helping herself to a second slice of pizza. “You should totally be glad that Chigusa decided to forgive you and give you a second chance!  Now you two can get married and raise a family together!”

“Married?” Shota suddenly said, a frown on his face.

“Aren’t you going to take responsibility?  It’s not like you don’t love each other, what’s wrong with getting married?  Chigusa is a total hottie, and you aren’t going to do any better even if you try your best for the rest of your life!”

“Please stop.”  I said, wanting my friend to quit going where this whole topic was headed.  “Shota and I are going to take things slow, okay?  If it happens down the road, then it happens, if not, then that’s fine too.  Shota already agreed to be there for our baby, that’s… all that’s important right now.”

“So you’re gonna wait until after the baby is born?  Isn’t that kind of dumb?” Saori, of all people had the nerve to say this to me.

“I have my reasons, okay!”  I yelled, a bit frustrated.

Saori and Izumi don’t know that Shota is married to my mother, and it’s something I wasn’t planning on revealing to them yet, or any time soon for that matter.  I could see both Shota and mom looking tense.

“All that matters is that I’m being supported by both Shota, mom, and you girls.  Besides, there are plenty of people who don’t get married so quickly anymore.”

“True… Then what about the baby’s name?  Will it get your family name or his?”  Saori asked again.  For someone who’s usually an idiot, she’s surprisingly sharp with the dangerous questions today.

“Just shut up and eat your pizza.”

I would think the only way things could get worse, was if dad accidentally showed up again.  Thankfully that didn’t happen.  Instead our lunch date ended without either of my friends finding out, and we eventually made our way home.

When we got in, both Shota and mom sat down on the couch.  I tried to make my way upstairs quickly to avoid what I felt was coming, but before my foot could reach the first stair, I heard them both call my name at the same time.

So, what else was there to do but haul ass upstairs!

I didn’t want to talk about it, because there wasn’t anything to talk about.  Everything Izumi and Saori said was the case.  I dumped Shota because I thought about meeting someone else who might show they cared about me more.  I had no idea I was being set up like that by Izumi.

After all, Izumi was the one who practically hand-picked Shota to be my boyfriend.  The main reason I went and dumped him was because I didn’t want to hurt him if it somehow ended up with me cheating on him while we were going out.  Yeah, I’m the kind of bitch who’ll try and steal her mother’s husband who just so happened to be my ex-boyfriend, but I wouldn’t cheat on him?  What a joke I must be…

But, I did dump him.  That part is the truth no matter how you look at it, I just never expected that Shota would come out of his damn cave and find another woman, let alone my mother of all people!

It’s partly dad’s fault too for not keeping it in his fucking pants!

I crawled into the bed and pulled the covers over myself.

I know it’s only a matter of time before they come in to find me and it’s going to be ugly…

Except… minutes turned into hours, and they never did.

I carefully left the room and checked the house, but no one was here, not even Nene-san or Kumi-san.

“Where on earth did they go?”

I sent a text to Shota, asking where they were, and received a fast response.

「We’re out with Nene-san buying a few things she wanted.  If you don’t want to talk about it, you don’t have to.  Mayuri-san and I won’t push it since it’s a lot for us, too…」

I sighed, then replied to him.

「I love you, Shota.  Even if I had met someone else, it’s not like I would have done that kind of thing with them right away!」

「I believe you.  I just… can’t say the same, can I?」

Ugh.

Stupid Saori and Izumi!  Why couldn’t you two just keep your big mouths shut!  I had gotten this far without either of them needing to know…

And now they did.

By chance, Kumi-san came in alone, and found me resting on the couch.

“Hello.”

“…hi.”

“How did your appointment go?”

“It went fine.  The doctor was nice, and I have more ultrasound pictures.”

“Cool!  Can I see?”

“Un… sure.”

The manila envelope was on the table in front of me, so I reached in and pulled out the four pictures taken of my baby.

“Aww, so cute!”

Kumi-san seemed to be mesmerized by them.  “Chigusa-san, how… does it feel?”

“It doesn’t… well, not exactly.  I mean, I’m aware I’m pregnant, but the baby doesn’t move all that much except for certain times, then I can feel it a little.  It’s still a pretty unreal for me right now.”

“…can I touch your stomach?” Kumi-san asked.

I leaned back and told her where to feel.  Her hand pressed gently, as if she was afraid to damage it, even though I’m quite sturdy.

“The firmness is where my womb is, protecting the baby from everything outside.”

“That’s so amazing!”

“I guess…”

“You don’t think so?”

I shook my head.

“I think so.  I’m just… sort of reeling right now.  I’m past the point where I could decide if I didn’t want to have it anymore.  Now, unless my life is at risk… I’m going to be a mother come springtime.”

“You’re so lucky though… you get to have a baby with Shota-nii!”

“Yeah… I do love him.”

“Me too.”

“You?”

“I mean, I’m not going to steal him or anything, but I’ve loved Shota since we were young.  More than anything, I wanted mom and him to be together, so I could be his daughter.”

“Not that I’m going to rain on your parade here, but isn’t he only a couple of years older than you?”

“So what if he is?”

I held up my hands, not really understanding where she was coming from.

“Listen, Shota-nii is an incredible person!  Do you even know what kind of man it takes to be responsible enough to care for a flake of a mother and a firecracker of a daughter?  There’s no way I was easy for him to deal with, but Shota-nii never once got mad or upset with me.  He always took the best care of mom and me, and I love him for that.  Because until she came back into his life and she met up with him again and your mom… she hadn’t smiled like that since we were last living here.”

Kumi-san stood up and offered me her hand.

“Come with me real quick.”

I let her take me, and we went upstairs to my old room, which was now occupied by her and her mother.

“We used to all fit on this bed.  I slept here, Shota-nii slept in the middle, and mom slept there.  Whenever she’d have nightmares, he’d hold on to her tight until she stopped twisting and moaning.  She sounded like a ghost and it used to scare me.  Only Shota-nii could make her stop, you know?”

Then she pointed at the desk.

“There used to be a mirror here.  Shota-nii would open up MeTube and I’d find a video of what I wanted my hair to look like, and he learned how to make it that way.  I used to change my hair every couple of days, and Shota-nii always did his best to make my hair look as good as the person in the video.”

Then she pointed to the small television in the room on the dresser.

“We used to have a big beanbag we could both rest on, and we’d play video games together while waiting for mom to get home from working at the flower shop.  Shota-nii wasn’t the best, but together there wasn’t a game we couldn’t beat!”

Kumi-chan sighed.

“He’d stay with me all day, even when I was at my worst because I missed my mom.  He’d take baths with me, and play fun games with me, and when mom would come home, he’d give her a massage when she said her body ached, and… he could do anything but cook.”

“He’s no good at cooking?” I asked, interested.

“Well, that’s… the thing.  I think he can.”

“He can?”

“Un.  One day his mom and dad and my mom were all out of the house and it was summer and I was super hungry.  We were out of instant noodles, and I wanted something to eat, so Shota-nii made me some kind of egg dish.  It was super yummy… but it was only that one time.  No one believed me that he cooked something, and one time they had him try but whatever he made had the house smelling burnt for hours, even with the doors open to ventilate.”

“Kumi-san, do you know what his favorite food is?”

“Umm… he doesn’t have one, I think?”

“So it’s not curry or sukiyaki or even pork soup?”

Kumi-san began to make a sour face.

“No.  Ah… Shota’s mom… wasn’t the best cook, either…”

“She wasn’t?”

She shook her head quickly.

“Not at all.  But Shota-nii and his dad always ate every bite of whatever she made.  Mom would sometimes have to make me something separate to eat because… it wasn’t edible to me.  I think when it comes to Shota-nii… it only matters that it was made by someone who loves him.  To him, that’s his favorite food.”

“So Shota’s big on family?”

“Yeah, he’s really big on family.  I didn’t even know what a happy family was until I lived here with mom and Shota-nii.  It took a long time to forgive my mother for leaving him alone.”

“Weren’t Shota’s parent’s alive back then?”

“They were, but when Shota-nii became my new dad back then, we were his family more than his own parents were.  Shota-nii did so much for us, way more back then than even I as a capable high-school student can do even now!  After begging his parents to let us stay in his room, he never asked them for anything else for free.  Shota, on the days my mom was off from her part-time job, would make sure we were good, then he’d go find some kind of work and come back with money.  He gave every penny to my mom for whatever we needed.  I heard from mom that while it wasn’t a living wage, it was crazy impressive for a boy his age to earn.”

Kumi-san was telling me all about his merits and that if he put his mind to taking care of someone he thought of as family, there was little he would be unwilling to do.  To Shota… family was his everything.

“What about now?”  I asked her.

“What do you mean?”

“Well, Shota is married to my mom who is like the same age as yours… and he knocked me up and we’re close in age too.  We’ve become his family but we’re not that different from you two.  Doesn’t that… upset you?”

“Why would it?  He’s happy with you two, isn’t he?”

“I know that’s the case with my mom… but I don’t know if that’s the case with me.”

“He has to be.  You’re carrying his baby.  Even if you were the worst, because you’re the mother of his child, he’ll always have a special place for you… as for mom and me…”

“Mm?”

“I’m pretty jealous that you get to have what I never will.”

“Shota?”

Kumi-san nodded.

“I get the feeling he doesn’t see me as a woman who could love him, but as something else instead, like some kind of untouchable little sister.  It hurts because I would have all of his babies if he only asked.”

“Are you a brocon or something?”

“Just a Shotacon.  But even then… he never came looking for us after we left.  I wanted to visit his house often, but mom said I had to leave him alone… and the one time I did visit… you probably don’t remember, but it was during the funeral.  I was here with my mom.  That’s when I first saw you… and I mean, who would want a clingy sister-type pestering him when he could be alone with his girlfriend getting up to god only knows what?” She said, pointing at my less than obvious baby bump.

“I wish!  We didn’t even have our first kiss for like six months after we started dating!”

“For real?”

“Yeah, I always thought he didn’t seem to care if I was his girlfriend or not sometimes.”

“There’s no way that’s possible.  If he didn’t like you, he wouldn’t have bothered with you at all.”

“What makes you so sure of that?”

“I talked with Raita about it.  You know those two are like best friends, right?”

“…that’s what Raita says, anyway.” I half-confirmed.

“…”  Kumi-san squinted at me before replying, “Anyway, he said Shota-nii had girls around him who wanted to date him, but he never bothered with anyone until you two met in high school.”

“Really?”

“Really.  That’s why mom was shocked to find you two were dating.  She really thought you were some kind of mean and trashy bitch.”

I shrugged.

“I probably was, back then at least.  I had problems with my family, and my friends were delinquents.  I just wanted to escape from my problems, and Shota never complained when I came over… even when I stayed the night, and he made me sleep in the guest room.”

“Knowing Shota-nii, that was so he didn’t do anything improper with you without your full consent.  That’s one thing his father was firm about with him.  How to treat a woman with respect.”

So my day was spent waiting for Shota, my mom and Nene-san to get home.  Kumi-san and I decided to snack on some ice cream we had in the freezer and we played Shota’s video game console while talking about nothing but him and his past I barely knew, until they all came home.
