"Blake!" A voice called out.

My mind raced in panic, thinking about who amongst my acquaintances could have spotted me crawling along the top of this wall.

I had walked for a good part of its circumference, but now that the wall around the Baron’s estate ran closer to a road, I was more exposed so I had decided to play it safe.

"Blake!" The person called out again.

I glanced down and was rather surprised to see that man. He was still wearing his impressive trenchant, although this time a sword was peaking from behind its folds.

He gestured for me to come down.

"Too high." I tried to mouth to him. I couldn't risk making as much noise as he did.

"I'll catch you." He mouthed back, as if oblivious to the fact that he'd been yelling only a few moments prior.

Then, he actually came to the foot of the wall, and opened his arms, as if he was actually going to catch me. He then nodded, as if to reassure me that he was indeed going to remain there and prevent me from further worsening my rib fracture.

I wasn't stupid, but I also realized that I was short on options. There were no trees, or even bushes anywhere on this side of the wall. Plus I could just about make out a pink line at the horizon, indicating that I had spent as much time on this wall as I had inside the mansion.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Bracing myself for the pain, I rolled over the wall's edge. It was so high that there was no need to even try to land properly.

The impact never came.

"Did you get it?" That man asked, as he gently let me down.

I wanted to express my disbelief, but I decided it be more appropriate to just hand him the envelope.

When he went through its contents, his face lit up with the purest expression of joy I had ever seen on an adult. I was still recovering from the mental shock of being caught in someone's arms, when that man wrapped both his arms around me in a hug.

"Oh thank you. Thank you so much!" He joyfully said.

I was too dumbfounded to speak. When he pulled away, he spoke again :

"I would have never gotten these without you. Your help was invaluable to my mission, and for that, I cannot thank you enough."

"It's nothing." I blunted. Between the praise and the honesty, I wasn't sure what to say, and I could feel my face turn red.

"I know this isn't much -" He began.

"Actually there's something else-" I accidentally cut him short, remembering about the gems I've stolen.

"Oh, you can keep those." He grinned, as I showed him the gems. "I'm sure that bastard won't miss them."

He then fished a leather pouch from within his trenchcoat, which I was certain was magical, and handed it to me.

"To thank you for your work." He explained, as I untied the knot around the pouch of gold coins.

That was the point where my mind stopped being able to process anything. Too much change and strange things had happened in the past day, and most of those things had happened in the past ten minutes. I was still staring at the pouch of gold when that man said :

"The sun will soon rise, and I must be on my way. Shall we bid farewell here?"

I looked up from the gold and into his deep blue eyes. No, I didn't want to bid him farewell. I knew I should, that a crook like me had no business hanging around a man like him, especially now that I quite literary had no business with him, but something inside me prevented me from leaving. It was a tightness in my chest, but a pleasant one, one that I hadn't felt in a long while.

"In fear of sounding redundant, actually there's something else." I spoke, trying to mask my anxiousness behind a joking facade.
