Chapter 2: Chapter 1 (Part 2): Aster

Ethan took another look in the mirror at ‘himself’ and sighed. Two hours before, he used to be The Ethan Grey, the 30-year-old rising star who had multiple blockbusters under his belt. However, in the end, cancer still took it all in a matter of months. His body caved in, and even with his extreme determination to live he still succumbed to his illness.

But life didn’t seem to have given up on him yet.

“I have reincarnated.” 

Instead of getting greeted by the Lord of Hell, he woke up in a different body. He would have been shell-shocked and befuddled, had it not been for the memories he received two hours ago. 

“I…have transmigrated into Aster Carmine.” Ethan, now Aster, peered closer at the reflection of the fat eighteen-something-year-old boy in the mirror. It stared back at him as if it too was examining its new master. 

“Aster Carmine, the evil step-brother from [Dreams of Splendor], the novel I read right before I died. Now I have turned into him,” Aster chuckled to himself, “What a twist of fate…”

[Dreams of Splendor] was a best-seller novel that had been making quite a buzz during Ethan’s last days. Inside the hospital, he didn’t have much to do all day. So, to pass his boredom, he developed the habit of reading books. [Dreams of Splendor] was the last book he read before his death.

It was an interesting book, in Ethan’s opinion. The main protagonist, Cecil Reese, belonged to a family of famed movie stars. His father was an accomplished agent in a major talent agency and his mother was from an elite background as well. However, the happy little family fell apart due to his father’s illicit relationship.

The protagonist’s father fell in love with Serena Carmine, a charming woman from a middle-class family. Enamored with the vast wealth and status of Bennett Reese, Serena too returned his affections. Together, they had Aster, who was 5 years younger than Cecil. 

Under Bennett’s adorations, Aster grew up spoiled rotten, while Cecil grew up lonely with a depressed mother. Thus, he made it his life’s mission to capture his father’s attention. 

He honed his acting skills and by just twenty-four, he had already bagged at least three box-office megahits, one of which even had him starring as the male lead.

His endeavors did not go unnoticed by his father. After experiencing the high star power of Cecil, Bennett quickly abandoned Serena and Aster. In the book, both Serena and Aster only suffered after that. 

Serena who was still in love with Bennett went half-senile in his yearning, while Aster wasted away his life through alcohol and drugs. He would later pop into the storyline from time to time to obstruct the protagonist’s path. However, in the end, he was just cannon fodder, far from being a villain. 

Aster kept on mixing with the bad crowd. After becoming the scapegoat of a failed conspiracy to ruin Cecil’s reputation, Aster ended up getting jailed. His death was later mentioned in the story, where he got involved in a prison fight and met his demise.

“Thankfully, Aster’s life hasn’t eroded to that point yet. He has yet to start doing drugs, or get involved with the real bad crowd.”

Although Ethan still had some difficulties accepting the reality that he had transmigrated, after Aster’s memories forced their way into his head, he knew that this was not just a dream. Along with those memories, he also ended up inheriting some of Aster’s indignation towards life.

He looked at his pudgy body and smiled. 

“Although this body is not up to the shape yet, it is much better than the one I had in my previous life. Maybe this time I might actually be able to achieve all my dreams.”

Ethan or Aster’s path to success had just started.
