My legs...Hero Mars, h-help me!

I appeared standing near the mangled body of a young boy, barely 20 years old as he laid dying on a burnt and corpse filled battlefield. His legs were blown off by an enemy mage and was pleading to me for help.

...I remember this boy.

It was when I was in charge of leading a group of soldiers numbering 2500 to take out a small enemy stronghold hidden in the northern area of Salis, which was, at the time, a forest. And as we were marching through it, we got ambushed by guerrilla forces sent from the stronghold to stall for time. Each group numbered around 200 and the estimated total of enemy troops that was in the fort was 2000.

Despite us having the numerical advantage, that didn't mean we could defeat them easily. Before we even stepped into the forest, the enemy already knew the layout of it and used it to their advantage. Using hidden paths and hit and run tactics, they attacked us effectively.

By the time we got to the enemy stronghold and took it over, all that was left of the 2500 soldiers was 2326. Meaning, 174 soldiers died under my leadership.

Although it may not seem like a big loss when looking at it from the overall picture of gaining a new stronghold, It doesn’t change the fact that I still lost 174 courageous men.

And one of these 174 courageous men, was this boy laying here in his own pool of blood. His name was Dalis. He was a cheerful boy who always had a smile on his face.

I wanna live... I don't wanna die…Hero Mars can you save me?

He pleaded with tears in his eyes. But I shook my head from side to side and solemnly said.

"I can't save you….I'm sorry."

It was the truth, I couldn't save him. He lost too much blood and his wounds were so severe, that even Black Jack couldn’t save him.

But before I could finish...

Aren’t heroes supposed to save people? The reason I’m like this is because of you! It’s all your fault!

Dalis glared at me with eyes filled with absolute hatred.

It's all your fault!

It's all your fault!

Dalis kept repeating as he started to get louder. His voice slowly turned deeper and more malevolent.

BOOM!

"Ah!"

Then before I could react, my feet were grabbed by numerous dismembered and bloody corpses. They were slowly pulling me down into their embrace.

Please save me!

Help me!

H-have mercy!

Spare me! Please!

Some were pleading for me to save them while others were pleading for me to have mercy.

It's all your fault! You led me to my death!

The burnt Dalis hopped up with his arms and lunged at me. Grabbing me by the neck, he placed his badly burned face close to mine and once again repeated in an unquenchable rage.

It's all your fault!

It's all your fault!

IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!

My vision suddenly goes black.

***

"...Young master Marcus, young master Marcus, It's time to wake up."

In the blackness, a sweet voice softly drifts into my ear.

Ah, it sounds so heavenly.

"You got to wake up Master Marcus."

The sweet voice got louder as it gently nudged me.What soft hands!

But upon remembering what happened in my dream, I quickly shot up from the bed.

"Kyaa!"

Mary jumped in fear. But I paid it no mind, instead I was looking around frantically, wanting to confirm that what I experienced was actually a dream.

"Nice soft blankets, expensive furniture, a pretty maid...phew, that was a dream."

Realizing I was still in the room I was assigned to me by the king, I put a hand on my heart and released a deep sigh in relief.

Although I’ve been experiencing the occasional nightmare ever since I returned to earth, it only consisted of brief flashbacks. It was never this vivid!

My whole back is covered in sweat!

It looks like being summoned back here caused me to remember some unsavory things.

"A-are you okay?"

Mary asked nervously.

"Hmm? What do you mean?"

Trying to act like I didn't know what she was talking about, I asked with a clueless expression.

"W-well you were thrashing in your sleep while constantly saying 'it's not my fault' so I thought you might've had a bad dream."

"I-is that so? Well, I guess you can say that. I had a very bad nightmare."

Fuck bad, that shit was scary! Too scary!

"...You want to talk about it? My mother said nightmares are worries and burdens we unconsciously hide deep within ourselves so talking about it may help get rid of your nightmares. B-but if you don't want to t-talk about it to a lowly maid like me then t-that’s fine... "

Looking at me with concern, Mary nervously explained. Seeing her act this way, a small smile appeared on my face.

I'm starting like this girl even more! You don't meet many people who's as caring as her.

Not in this world or on earth.

With a voice full of gratitude, I told her.

"There's nothing to worry about, It was only a little nightmare. Everybody has one every once in a while... Now tell me, what have you woken me up for? Because I'm pretty sure that if I went back to sleep right now, I wouldn't have the nightmare again."

I said tired as I snuggled back down in the warm, soft bed again. It took me a while to go to sleep last night.

I kept tossing and turning over the fact that I've been summoned back to this world to be a hero again! Not once, but again.

It's bad enough that I've got 'former' added to it, I'm not going to be one a second time.

"Come on Master Marcus! If you don't come for breakfast, the head butler will scold me!"

"...What's for breakfast?"

"A full course buffet!"

She said matter of factly.

“...Made by the top chefs?”

“Who otherwise would cook for the royal family?”

“...”

Hmm, since it's a full course buffet, I guess I can get up.

"Alright, I'm up."

I throw the blanket off me and get up from the bed. I went to sleep in the clothes I came here with so I was good to go.

"Alright! Let's go and get some grub."

Doing a couple of light stretches, I casually said.

"Sure."

With that, I had Mary lead me to the dinning hall.

While walking there, I take a look at the scenery since the hallway that we're walking on is an outdoor hallway.

In the courtyard next to us there's a garden filled with beautiful roses and tulips that span from the color red to the color violet, making the garden look like a rainbow.

Noticing my gaze, Mary explains to me with a smile.

"This garden is called Flowering Rainbow. It was designed by the queen to commemorate her daughter's birth a few years ago."

"Is that so? How old is the princess?"

"She's nine years old."

"Then I bet she loves running around this wonderful garden doesn't she?"

"She did but.."

"But?"

Mary's expression soon became one of pity.

"...Three years ago she had a severe case of the flu and it damaged her throat badly. This caused her to lose her voice. Even worse, the flu left her body frail. She can't even go outside anymore to look at them or she'll risk getting sick again."

"...My apologies."

Feeling bad about the situation of the little princess, I gave a sincere apology. If I'd know about this earlier I probably wouldn't have said what I said.

"It's nothing you should apologize for Master Marcus. It happened over three years ago. Besides, I wasn't in the palace then."

"I see."

"..."

"..."

The atmosphere then became heavy. I wanted to change the subject but I couldn't find any topics that might've interested her.

I only knew her for a day after all.

And just as the awkwardness was starting to become unbearable...

"We're here.”

We arrive at the exquisitely carved doors to the dining room.

"Now if you excuse me, I have to head to the back and get ready to serve."

Mary said as she speedily ran down the hallway and made a left at the corner, that must be the way to the kitchen.

She must've felt a little awkward as well after having that conversation. I guess I wasn't the only one.

"*Sniff* *Sniff* Ah, that smells delicious."

Even though I was only standing at the entrance of the dining hall, the delectable aroma of the scrumptious food drifted into my nose.

"As expected of a *slurp* royal chef."

Not wasting anymore time, I open the dining hall door and am met with a long dining table filled with various types of food. There were meats such as steaks, sausage, and bacon, and fruits like grapes and sliced oranges. There were even weird fruits that looked like crystals!

It was a foodie’s heaven!

"Ah, Marcus over here!"

Waving like crazy, Kari points to my seat, which is right beside Alice. Seeing this, I give her a thumbs up. It’s great that I’m able to sit next to such a beautiful girl first thing in the morning!

"How come you're so late Marcus?"

Alice asked. Of course I wasn't going to tell her that I was having nightmares of the battles I had here. So I told them this instead.

"I stayed up all night and didn't manage to get enough sleep so I overslept. If it wasn't for Mary coming to wake me up I would still be in the bed right now."

Kari: “Same here. I was so excited about becoming a hero that I didn’t get a wink of sleep in. It was only thanks to my butler coming that I woke up. What about you Alice? Did you sleep alright?”

Alice: “I slept fine. The beds were quite comfortable. It was almost as if I was sleeping on a cloud.”

"At least one of us got some rest. Now, how about we dig into this food? Because I don’t know about you but I’m hungry."

Sitting down in the seat next to her, I said as I used a fork to stab a sausage.

“*Nom* *nom* delicious!”

I then grabbed a piece of bacon...It was also delicious.

“Marcus, don’t you know that it’s rude to eat like that.”

At my greedy way of eating, Alice commented while gracefully taking a sip of tea. Shrugging my shoulders, I took another bite and said.

“ *Nom* Sorry Alice but living off of prison food for three years will do this to you. Once you’re out, everything starts tasting great.”

In prison, most of the stuff they served you consisted of food that was bland and watered down. There was little to no flavoring. It was food purgatory.

This was why many prisoners placed heavy importance on commissaries. They traded and created recipes that helped spice up their already bland palate.

For example, Jailhouse Tamales, and Chi-chi.

They may not look good but they sure as hell taste good!

“Hey, uh Alice, want your bacon?”

“...Marcus, I haven’t even eaten yet.”

...

"Ah, now that was good. *burp*"

I say with content as I lean back in my chair and pat my stomach. Man, whoever cooked this food should get a Nobel Peace Prize or something, he could give Gordon Ramsay a run for his money!

"I'm honestly surprised at how you can each so much in so little time. I don't know how you do it."

Kari asked while staring at the pile of plates in front of me with her mouth wide open.

Heh, if you spent a combined six years eating nothing but shitty food from both prison and the battlefield (sometimes going days without food on the latter), you'll start to appreciate what you can get too.

Plus, it's not every day you get to eat Gordon Ramsay level food.

"His majesty said to come to the study as soon as you were done with your breakfast.”

After seeing that we were finished, an old man that seems to be in his sixties politely said while taking a bow. He must be the head butler.

I'll call him Sebastian.

I look towards Alice and Kari and see them staring at me. They must be waiting for my opinion on the matter.

Getting up from the chair, I say to the two.

"Come on, let's go greet his highness."

"Alright! Let's go!

Kari said with excitement as she grabbed Alice's hand and followed behind the old butler.

Does her excitement have an ‘off’ switch?

"Marcus hurry up!"

"Yeah, yeah. I'm coming."

Under the lead of 'Sebastian' we head towards the throne room once again.

***

“Hello, my brave heroes. Did you have a wonderful rest?”

King Paul asked as soon as we entered the study. He was sitting behind his desk looking through some paperwork, writing on every other paper. As expected of a king, able to have a conversation and write at the same time. He's able to multitask at an expert level.

“We had a good rest, thank you.”

With a bow, Alice said.

“So, what has his Highness called us for?”

I ask respectfully. Before, I rejected him in front of everyone, and even disrespected his subordinate in front of him. I made him a lot of face. The best I can do is be respectful from this point forward. Hopefully he isn't mad.

“I'm calling upon you guys to apologise once again for my subjects actions.”

“Don't worry about it your majesty. It's not your fault. If there's anyone to blame it's that fat one. What's his name?”

Of course, I’m part to blame but let’s put it all off on the fat balding guy.

“His name is Duke Yulsten, the head of the financial department. I've never liked him since he's known to dabble in illicit affairs. I've been meaning to have him leave the Council but I don't have enough evidence to pin him. Also, that joke yesterday was pretty funny, I thank you for letting me blow off some steam.”

“Haha, no prob. It was my pleasure.”

Huh? It turns out he wasn't mad. As a matter of fact, he was happy. Duke Yulsten, eh? I'll remember that name.

“Marcus, are you seriously no planning on wanting to become a hero?”

Kari asked as she looked at me. Sigh, I thought we were over this already? Firmly shaking my head from side to side, I told her.

“Nope. I'm not willing to become a hero, sorry. D-don’t  look at me with those puppy eyes! Hey back up. No means no.”

“Please be one with us! You're the only one who understands what I talk about!”

“Just teach Alice about weeb culture. That way you can talk to her about it!”

“That's tantamount to saying I should talk to myself! Please Marcus! No, Marcus-sama!”

You are reading story The Return of an Unlikely Hero at novel35.com

“What do you mean 'talking to myself’? Kari, are you saying that I don't understand what you guys be talking about?”

“W-well..”

“Anyways, was that all you want to ask?”

Ignoring those two, I ask the King. He couldn't have summoned us here just to apologise.

“Oh. I also summoned you guys for evaluation.”

““Evaluation?””

Before I had a chance to reply, Alice and Kari said in unison.

“Yes. Although it may be insensitive considering that you only arrived here less than a day ago, we need to measure how powerful you are and prepare lessons accordingly.  We will evaluate you based on five categories: offensive power, defensive power, mana quantity, physical ability, and mana control. At the end of this test, you’ll be assigned a rank ranging from S to F. Therefore, to start things off, I’ve prepared a magic tool that allows us to see your magic element and aptitude.”

King Paul snaps his fingers and the attendant named Willis brings in a glass orb and sets it on the desk..

“This magical item is an Elemental Orb. It'll show your most suitable element and then manifest it. The stronger your manifestation is, the higher your aptitude for that element is. All you have to do is place your hand on it and inject mana into it. The orb will do the rest.”

It went essentially like this: the stronger your affinity towards an element was, the easier it is to cast spells particular to that element.

As for what those elements are, they're: fire, wind, lighting, earth, and water. They make up the five basic elements of magic.

Aside from these five, there are two other elements: light and dark. These two elements are considered to house all the non-elemental magic such as healing and necromancy.

All together, there are seven elements associated with magic. And from these seven, are tens, if not, hundreds, of magical elements derived from them.

For example, I once fought a guy who could turn his whole body into steel using [Steel Magic]. He was a pain in the ass to deal with but after a long and arduous battle, he fell.

“I'm first! How do I inject mana?”

With gleaming eyes, Kari puts her hand on the orb and asks King Paul. Slowly, he explained.

“If you concentrate hard enough, you should feel like there’s something other than blood flowing in your body. Do you feel it?”

“Give me a sec…”

At King Paul’s words, Kari closes her eyes and concentrates.

“I feel something! It feels oddly familiar but unfamiliar at the same time. Is this mana?”

“Yes. that is indeed mana. Now, picture that your body is a river and try to flow it towards your hand and into the center of your palm.”

“Got it.”

A few seconds after she said that...

WHOOSH!

A mini tornado began to form from within the orb followed by strong and powerful winds. The winds were so strong that it caused the papers and books that were sitting on both the desk and the nearby bookcases started to fly everywhere.

“Kyaa!”

“Careful!”

As the manifestation went on, its wind gusts began to push me and Alice back a few steps, almost causing Alice to fall over. Luckily, I managed to catch her before she did.

“That’s enough, Ms. Kari. You can remove your hand now.”

King Paul said unperturbed, not caring about his personal appearance being disheveled due to the powerful wind gusts.

“Okay.”

At his words, Kari removed her hand from the crystal orb. The instant she did, the mini tornado within the orb slowly disappeared and the wind slowly died down.

“You have the element of wind. And judging how strong your manifestation was, you have a very strong affinity for it. Congratulations!”

With a surprised expression King Paul earnestly praised. I had a surprised expression as well. Who would have thought that this girl would have such talent for wind magic.

“I'll go next. Concentrate and move the mana towards your palm, correct?”

Seeing that Kari was done, Alice walked up to the Elemental Orb and asked.

“Yes, that’s correct. Just picture that the vessels in your body are rivers and slowly flow the mana towards your palms.”

Straightening out his appearance that King Paul patiently explained. Nodding at his explanation, Alice placed her hand on the orb.

 And the instant she did…

“*Shiver* W-when did it get so cold in here?!”

The entire study was covered in ice! There were even snowflakes floating in the air!

“I-ice element!”

The king said shivering despite having the burning flame of passion in his eyes. Staring at the beautiful snowflake formed in the center of the orb, he continued.

“Out of a-all the people I’ve seen who had an affinity for ice m-magic so far, y-you're the only person I’ve seen who had such a strong manifestation! I-if I had to rank the potential you have as a magician based on this manifestation, I can easily put you a-at an S-rank!”

“You hear that Alice? You're not even a magician yet and you’re already destined to be up there with the big shots! Good job!”

With a smile on my face, I said as I placed my hand on her head, and gave it a gentle rub. Ah, I’m so proud of her!

“Hehe. Thanks.”

Closing her eyes slightly, Alice said with faintly flushed cheeks and a lovely smile.

So cute.

“Uh, can you please remove your hand? It's so cold in here that probably even Frosty would start shaking.”

Faintly shivering, Kari interjected. At her words, I couldn’t help but agree. Although I've been acting like this cold didn’t faze me, I was shivering. I just didn’t show it because I wanted to see Alice’s smile.

“Ah, I’m sorry!”

Removing her hand from the orb in a hurry, Alice apologized.

“Ah, nice warm air!”

Kari shouted happily. After Alice took her hand off the elemental orb, the icey scene disappeared. Bringing the area around us back to room temperature.

“Marcus, it's your turn.”

“Yeah, I wanna see what yours is as well!”

Alice and Karis said as they gave me expectant looks. Even King Paul was giving me eyes full eagerness.

“Sigh, I guess I have no choice.”

Although I've been dreading this moment, I should go on and finish it.

Under the expectant eyes of everyone, I place my hand on the orb and feel a cool sensation all over my body.

Then…

BON~G! BON~G!

"Ah!"

"My ears!"

"So loud!"

The solemn ringing of church bells could be heard followed by the exclaims of Alice and the other two. They were clutching their ears and closing their eyes in pain.

What appears in the orb was the image of a skull wearing a crown as souls hover around it. The skull stayed visible for a moment before I quickly removed my hand from the orb, making it disappear.

...Good thing Alice and the others didn't see it.

“...You have an affinity for a non-element. Which is quite rare."

Taking his hands off his ears, King Paul said astounded.

"Do you know what element he is?"

Alice asked.

"As for which one it is, that's hard to say. I felt an aura that was both holy and terrifying! Usually, when one has a non-elemental attribute, it's up to the caster to figure out its uses because more times than not, that non-elemental attribute is unique to only them. That's not to say that there aren't people who share the same non-elemental attribute...What did you see in the orb Mr. Marcus?"

Shaking his head, King Paul asked.

“I saw two golden church bells. But other than that, there was nothing.”

Knowing that they didn't see what was formed in the orb due to the loud sound of bells ringing, I came up with this lie.

I didn't want to tell them the truth about what was actually there because I feel like it'd be a hassle to do so.

The powers I hold are very unique and very dangerous.

Which is why I don't want too many people knowing about them. Not King Paul, not Kari, not even Alice.

I feel like keeping this a secret even more so when it comes to King Paul in particular.

If I remember correctly, this world has a  religion very similar to Earth's Christianity. And from what I've seen during my last time here, they're influence is on par with the Catholic Church of the middle-ages.

If the king were to unfortunately decide to one day tell them about my power, who knows whether or not they'll try and kill me.

I don't want a holy crusade coming after my ass.

Therefore, I should play it safe and not tell anyone about this. At least, not yet.

"Should I call this [Bell Magic]?"

"...You can. However, because I don't have any mages that specialize in [Bell Magic] due to it being a rare if not one-of-a kind non-elemental attribute, you'll have to learn its magic yourself. The best I can do is provide the basics. Is that okay with you?"

"Yeah, that's fine. But can you just send me the books though? I find it that if I study alone, I work faster."

"We can do that. I'll send some beginner level magic books to your room after this."

"Thank you, your highness."

I give a bow in gratitude. With this, I don't have to go over stuff I already knew nor do I have to meet new people. It'd be tough trying to talk my way out of demonstrating [Bell Magic] knowing full well that I can't even use it (it's made up after all).

"Aye, since you have [Bell Magic] now should I start treating you like an alarm clock?"

With a smirk, Kari says jokingly. Haha, she's funny. Not even five minutes went by and she's already acting high and mighty. With a smile, I say to her.

"Haha, you can but if you don’t want to be woken up in the middle of the night every day, I suggest you don’t.”

“Yeah, right. Like you’ll intrude into a young maiden’s room in the middle of the night just to do that...Right?”

“...”

“Right?!”

“I went to prison for a reason.”

I wouldn’t wake her up with bells but with a good old fashion kick to the ass!

“Are there any books about well known people with non-elemental attributes? I think it’d be beneficial for Marcus to see how they developed their magic.”

Ignoring mine and Kari’s banter, Alice asked King Paul.

"Hmm, from what I remember, there’s only one person I know who’s a famous non-elemental."

Stroking his chin, King Paul answered.

“Who?”

“Mars.”

“Mars?”

“Yes. He was the hero before you, your predecessor. His name was Mars. As for what his real name is, it's only known to those close to him. Other than being a non-elemental, he was also known to have low mana levels. Despite these disadvantages, he didn't let that stop him, however. According to one of his companions, he used an unknown martial art that allowed him to finely control his body so well that he could perform superhuman feats and miracles."

“That guy is amazing!”

“Yeah, to be able to overcome such obstacles is indeed praiseworthy.”

Hearing Alice and Kari compliment the hero named Mars made me feel happy inside.

Why?

It's because I'm that hero.

I didn't use my real name because I felt that it was a risk to my safety plus Mars sounded better. And as for the unknown martial art I use, it's called [Heavenly Annihilation Arts].

Using its techniques, I'm able to control my body to perform superhuman things such as creating after images and cutting boulders in half.

Other than this, it also allows me to masterfully manipulate the mana within and around me. I can control it so well that I can do things like form barriers to doing delicate procedures like acupuncture.

As long as you have an imagination, the use for [Heavenly Annihilation Arts] is endless!

...And as much as I hate to admit it, I'm thankful for that 'hag' showing me such a powerful technique. Without it, I would've had to use my original powers more frequently.

“Sigh, it’s a shame that he disappeared. Otherwise, I’m sure you could’ve met him.”

“Eh? I thought he was already dead? I mean he should’ve been around more than a hundred years ago.”

Kari said with a surprised expression.

“Why’d you think so?”

Putting on a similar look, King Paul asked.

“Well, in manga, there's a pattern of whenever a batch of heroes are summoned, there’s usually a period of hundreds if not thousands of years in between them...Is that not how it is here?”

“Hmm, if going by history was then yes, you’d be right. We’ve had many heroes in the past and when they were summoned, it’d be hundreds of years apart. Eras after a hero is summoned are relatively peaceful after all. Well except the one tens years ago.”

I feel like that’s a shot at me. It’s not my fault that another war happened tens years after I left. My thoughts were on returning back to my family at the time. Not taking care of the aftermath of war.

...Wait.

Ten years?!

“Are you saying that it’s been ten years since I was- I mean the hero was summoned here?”

A little shocked about what I just discovered, I said aloud. Although a little dumbfounded at my sudden outburst, King Paul answered.

“Yes. However, not too long after defeating the Demon Lord, he disappeared. Nobody knows where he went and his close companions aren’t sharing any details.”

“...I see.”

So it’s been ten years since I’ve been summoned here, huh? I thought at least three years have passed.

Is this what scientists call a space-time difference?

Is Grace okay?  What about Robert?

While I was thinking of such things…

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

The door to the study room was knocked on. Soon after, Attendant Willis entered. With a bow, he reported.

“Duke Yulsten is requesting an audience, your highness.”

“Sigh, I understand. Can you finish the evaluation of these three? I initially wanted to do it myself but duty calls. Also, get a maid to come clean this mess up. I expected them to have amazing talents as heroes but I didn’t think they’d be this talented.”

Looking around the study with a wry smile, King Paul said. At his words, us three looked around as well. Wet books and paper were strewn everywhere on the floor from Kari’s and Alice’s element manifestations.

Glad mine wasn’t like that.

“As you wish your majesty.”

Not even paying mind to the mess, Attendant Willis said.

“Thanks. Now then, if you’d excuse me.”

Giving us a smile, King Paul started walking out of the room.

While doing so...

“Well, I’m going to have to take a rain check on the evaluation. I feel a little sick due to eating too much for breakfast this morning so I'm going to head back to my room. I’m right behind you, your highness.”

Making up this excuse, I followed behind King Paul. this in turn, caused Attendant Willis to frown a little before returning to a calm face.

I’m sorry for my rudeness but I can no longer continue with this evaluation. There’s a possibility that my identity could be found out due to my evaluation results being similar to the previous one I had.

Which by the way, was a rank F. But before that it was an S. As to how I went from an S-rank to an F-rank, that’s a story for another time.

Anyways, while the possibility of me being found out is small, I can’t take that chance. Call me paranoid but if my identity as the former hero Mars was to ever be found out, my dreams of living a slow, peaceful life would go straight down the drain!

I worked hard for that shit so I’ll be damned if it’s getting taken from me!

After exiting the study room behind the king, I start to head towards my room. But before that, I had something to tell both Alice and Kari.

“Meet me in my room at 10 o'clock tonight.”

“Eh?”

“Huh?”

I didn't disclose anymore and walked back to my room.
