The happiness in Fu Qing’s heart was palpable. Hearing the words, “You don’t have to worry about the Zhan family” had shattered her heart in pieces, but she was now at ease.
“I know,” she admitted as she gently took Zhan Qi’s hand in hers. “You’re only concerned about my safety, which I’m grateful for.”
Zhan Qi let go of her hand and squeezed her shoulder, saying, “Don’t worry. I’ll protect you no matter what.”
Fu Qing grabbed the chance to lean back on the passenger seat and look in his eyes.
They calmly held hands, taking in the relaxed atmosphere and enjoying the tranquility.
Suddenly, from the side of the road, a little boy appeared from nowhere and crossed the street.
“Watch out!” Fu Qing exclaimed, as she noticed the boy in front of them.
He was around the age of six or seven. He was focused on picking up the small ball that had rolled to the middle of the road, completely ignoring the speeding car.
Zhan Qi, fortunately, was on high alert and had quick reflexes. He kept his cool and slammed on the brakes forcefully.
The car screeched to a halt just a foot away from the child.
The boy was so terrified that he slumped in front of the car and sobbed heavily.
Fu Qing leaped from the car and clutched the child, nervously inspecting him from head to toe. Except for a minor scratch on the surface of his leg, he was unharmed.
Zhan Qi frowned as he sat behind the driver’s seat, gripping the steering wheel.
Of course, with no adults around to keep him company, such an innocent young child would run out onto the highway alone. Is it possible that this is the work of con artists?
He parked his car on the side of the road, turned off the engine, and got out.
Despite the possibility that this act was a ruse, Qing was still extremely nice and gentle. He wouldn’t let her get herself into any more trouble, especially because she’d never been the victim of such a scam before.
Unruffled, he asked, “Is the boy all right?”
“He’s fine, except for a small gash on his knee from falling down,” Fu Qing said, smiling as she consoled the little boy in front of her. “It’s nothing serious, but the incident has left him shaken, and he can’t stop crying.”
Zhan Qi breathed deeply and let out a sigh of relief.
He kneeled down and tenderly inquired, “Hey, little man, where are your parents?”
The boy was crying openly, his face twisted with anguish, and he refused to respond.
Zhan Qi stepped back to assess their surroundings. He spotted a green belt across the street, separating the busy highway from the sidewalk.
“This area is far too dangerous for us to stick around. Let’s bring him over that road verge first.”
Fu Qing persuaded the young boy to go with them by tenderly picking up his ball lying on the ground near him. “Come on, little man, let’s go over there and play with the ball. There aren’t many cars driving by that lane, and it’s a wide area suitable for playing catch.”
The little boy, still unnerved by the incident, burst into tears and hiccups. Finally, he took a breath and nodded. Right away, he put his trust in this lovely older sister.
Zhan Qi got a conspiratorial wink from Fu Qing, as if she was bragging about how fantastic she was at getting the boy to stop crying.
For an instant, a wistfulness stole into Zhan Qi’s expression, and his forehead wrinkled.
Just as the three of them stepped into the green belt, a massive explosion went off.
Zhan Qi’s expression changed abruptly, and his first reaction was to cover both Fu Qing and the little kid and tackle them to the ground.
The three of them were quickly engulfed by a blast of intense heat waves.
Fu Qing covered Zhan Qi’s ears while Fu Qing shielded the small boy’s with her hands.
The explosion died out after a few moments, and they all turned around. The car that Zhan Qi was driving earlier was already on fire.
The traffic policemen arrived in a flash.
They provided a definitive answer after conducting a thorough investigation.
The car did not self-detonate because of a malfunction. It was obvious that someone had planned for it to blow up. An explosive had been rigged into the car’s chassis.
Fu Qing immediately thought of the thug who planned to blow up the police station with the bomb. Is it probable that the directions came from the same person?

She described the incident to Zhan Qi and the cops in great detail, including her encounter with the thug with the explosives at the police station.
As Zhan Qi listened to her story, his pupils dilated. Based on his knowledge of the situation, he guessed what was going on.
Zhan Leng appeared to have hired spies to keep a close eye on him and Qing’s every move.
Their cars were almost certainly equipped with a listening device. Because of Qing’s trip to the police station, the culprit’s level of vigilance had heightened.
Because they couldn’t get rid of the information any other way, they worked out a plan to kill him and Qing instead..
