The Rise Of Turok
The moment I woke up, I knew something was wrong, but I couldn’t put my finger on it due to the fog clouding the edges of my mind. The thought and unusual feeling kept nagging at me as I got out of bed and made my way to the bathroom. The feeling persisted until I got to the restroom and reached for water, there was no water. Instead of water, my hands were cleaned by sonic vibrations along with a facial cleansing scrubber to keep my helmet and face clean. If that wasn't enough, the three fingers on each of my hands and various other information told me that I definitely wasn’t in Kansas anymore.
Memories came hard and fast along as I began to hyperventilate, my heart hammering in my chest. None of this was okay, not okay at all. Getting a hold of myself, I forced the dread down as I looked into the mirror and found myself staring into the visor of… a Quarian.
In hindsight, a Quarian wasn't one of the worst races since I was still humanoid in nature. None of this was okay though and I wanted nothing to do with it even though I was stuck within this body. Unfortunately, that thought had to wait because my left arm was buzzing. Bringing it up out of reflex, I opened what could only be my omni-tool and checked for the latest messages.
-Rejoice! You, yes you!, have been chosen for a glorious purpose!
You have been tasked with saving the Quarian people. Fret not, for while the quest before you is a difficult one, I am a magnanimous higher order being and have granted you a mighty boon! I have granted unto you the power you know as 'Inspired Inventor.'
Five charges per day until the time of your death are your payment for saving the Quarians from their demise, the my boon to you to see this quest through to success.
Be wary, however. The universe you know as 'Mass Effect' is vast, but your time is limited.
I guarantee the success of your powers myself, but the world and its goings on, the 'plot,' does not bend to accommodate you. Neither are you protected from the horrors that await you in this world. You are just as vulnerable to the Reapers and Reaper technology as anyone else in this world.
Hugs and Kisses, ROB.
P.P.S. You have 4 days before you go on your pilgrimage.
Looking at the message as it hovered over my omni-tool almost had me hyperventilating again. I stood there having a minor breakdown as everything all came into focus.
Okay, that was a lot of weight on my shoulders, and I honestly wanted to panic some more, but that wouldn’t help right now. From what I read, every day, hour, minute, and even every second counted because the Reapers were coming, and I was stuck as in the body of a Quarian suit rat. No one would believe me about the Reapers--they hadn't believed Shepherd even when the evidence crashed into the Citadel! The more pressing concern at the moment was being a Quarian in Citadel space.
Closing out the message and watching as it auto-deleted itself, I went back to my breathing exercises even as I bent over the bathroom sink. After the third breath, I finally looked at my face in the mirror. The face I saw brought the Awoken to mind from Destiny. I was a big gamer before this isekai bullshit, plus as an avid manga reader, I kinda sorta knew excatly what was going on. With a calming breath, I continued to inspect my features. Even though everyone speculated what Tali might look like, I found it funny that Bungie and EA had a thing for purple sexy aliens.
I had glowing bright purple eyes to match my light purple skin, my hair was another off shade of purple and I looked damn near human. I thought that I was only humanoid by body shape but with the opacity on my visor turned all the way to clear, I discovered that Quarians were very much closer to humans than anyone really knew. The only real downside I could think of was the digiti-grade legs and three-finger hands, things that would need to be fixed later.
Speaking of fixing, I finally noticed the five charges at the back of my mind asking to be used. Trying to run my hand down my face, I was met with my helmet, and the reminder that Quarians were stuck in enviro-suits. Resting my helmeted head in my palm, a plan began to take shape. Had anyone been watching me, they would have seen the spark of madness. Firming my resolve, I began distributing my points, I placed one charge in adaptability, one in efficiency, a charge in hacking, one in programming, and my final charge went into general energy fields.
Gritting my teeth to contain a muffled grunt of pain, I stood resigned to my situation as the knowledge downloaded itself into my brain. Pain like nothing I’d ever felt before threatened to explode my skull and I wondered for a moment if I had bitten off more than I could chew, but I trusted in ROB that it was fiat-backed and that it wouldn’t melt my brain. If my adventure ended here and now with my brain leaking out of my ears, that would just be a disappointing waste. I'd be kind of pissed, to tell the truth.
If not, and I managed to survive the next few minutes, I would seize this bull by its horns and ride it into the fucking ground.
Blinking once then twice, I blinked away the light spots before noticing the grip that I had on the lower food port of my helmet. With a smile, I released my helm and then opened my omni tool and took a look at its base code. I could see where everything I just put my charges would work out. With programming and hacking, I understood the code in ways only the best Quarian hackers and programmers could. I saw places where I could make it far more adaptable and efficient.
Bringing up the rest of my suit specs, I found so many places I could improve by just fixing the program on eezo management, power distribution, and various other things. One of the more glaring and pressing concerns was the kinetic shields that had been installed. Sure, they were the basic stuff for a young adult Quarian about to start his pilgrimage, but from what I knew of the setting and from my charge knowledge, the damn things were under-performing by a lot and it would cost me my life, no ifs, ands, or buts about the matter. I originally wanted to put a charge in mass effect fields, but general energy fields were not only broader but also covered a few aspects of energy folding and a lot of other things that I would never have thought about, so a win for my intuition.
A knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts and with a smile and a plan, I walked out and never look back.
{ 1 Week Later… }
After spending the last of my charges on Engineering, I walked off the shuttle and into a new life. The games failed to do it justice, because the Citadel was massive, but even with all its grandeur, I couldn’t shake the aura of death. I was still far too vulnerable to do anything but I was on my way. I spent the four days in transit working on improvements. I looked like any other Quarian at the moment with my cheap little pistol and traveler's pack, but that was only surface level. With my new insights and advancements, I offered the captain of the ship an upgrade of his omni-tool’s code after showing off my own so that I could get some time in a clean room. Best and worst day of my life, you never know how touch and sensory starved you are until you can run your hand over your skin after hours, and I do mean untold hours of isolation. Being a Quarian fucking sucks and I wanted a cure like yesterday, and I didn't even want to get started on dealing with only three fucking fingers. Adaptability paid off in spades because rage-inducing doesn't even cover the three-finger situation.
With so many points in all of the good stuff, miniaturization, efficiency, adaptability, energy fields, math, and engineering, Inspired Inventor was really starting to pay off. I had been able to respec all of the kinetic emitters all over my suit along with the one inside of my pistol. With the efficiency of power management and the right programming, I was able to get them all to run at an added 60% all around with a 43% improvement in the power management. And this was all from the same equipment that I woke up in. None of it was top of the line. From my browsing online, I was certain that my cheap pistol was hitting with the same force as anti-material rifle, the kinetic barriers absorbing the recoil and feeding it back into my suit's batteries.
My suit itself was able to tank almost as much as the interceptor armor, and that was with just basic tuning, and I was glad for it.
With my pistol on the right, it gave me space for the miniaturized staff on my left. Using my week's ration of omni-gel, I had created what would crown my lord of death and destruction. It was only in the early stages but it was really showing its worth. I had stripped down one of the older omni-tool models and combined its eezo core with flash fabricated parts to create a staff that operated like Goku’s power staff from dragon ball. Right now it only had the extension range of ten feet, but that was fine since it made up for it with a blast of kinetic force from both ends. With that same kinetic force, I could either shoot at someone like a shotgun or smash them with it to apply blunt force trauma. In the middle I had the eezo core produce its own anti-gravitational field to work as a barrier.
That was just the start though, and the other revolved around the idea that we Quarian's looked like the Awoken from Destiny, the problem was I would need at least a basic medical facility to set my real plans in motion.
“Move it, suit rat!”
With a *tch*, I moved out of the Turian’s way and followed my fellow Quarians to get registered at C-Sec and find the Quarian slums. I had two days before my shuttle left for Elysium. The Blitz had not happened yet, which told me that I was at least a year or two out from the start of canon. Shep made his or her name during the Torfan raid and even if I wanted nothing to do with it, I could still make a name for myself during the Blitz. Was that opportunistic of me? Yes, but the Quarians needed someone to stand behind and the quickest way to become that person was to be seen as a war hero in the eyes of humanity.
I wasn’t the hero of my people yet though, so I did not feel bad as I brought up my omni-tool and activated my skimmer program to target that Turian asshat. His entire bank account was now at just five credits and I was up $73k credits after the money was sent through a few banks and cutouts before arriving back in my own accounts, plural. One account for the world to see and a few others with money for projects once I get to Elysium. Ignoring the looks that I was receiving, I followed my fellows to the slums, I was just glad we didn’t get harassed by the bullshit fake cops in charge.
That would end. I just had to bide my time;, but for now I paid for a sky car since I was the only one in the group with money to spare. The others gave me a look and I shrugged in return as one of the sky cars dropped out of the air and waited for us to get in.
It didn’t take long for another two days to come and go and I have to say, I absolutely hated being on the Citadel. The fleet had a little book on how you would be treated, along with my memories of the game, and they both paled in comparison to the truth of the matter. Quarians were so far down the food chain that some had to thank people for being allowed to basically survive getting beaten up in an alley. That shit I couldn't take and I was no hero by any measure, but I sure had that Salarian pair taste my three toes. Once I showed up I kinetic shotgunned one into a wall and smashed the other’s face in with my power staff. I had the Quarian they were beating up help me strip them of money and everything valuable.
I gave the guy who was getting his ass beat half the money and one of the Salarian’s weapons, the rest was taken by yours truly as I checked to make sure things were all clear. Once I got back to the little hole-in-the-wall motel, I stripped both suits of their power sources, kinetic generators, and various other useful parts. The omni-tool I had gotten from one of the Salarians was stripped before I added it to my off-hand. All I would need now is either one more or a custom-made version for the head of my staff.
“Tickets please?”
Looking at the man who had come by, I held out my hand, omni-tool active so he could scan the ticket I had for my place in Elysium.
“Ohh, we don’t see many Quarians signing up to live in System Alliance colonies.” The ticket man stated, trying to strike up a conversation.
In response, I shrugged before speaking, “I don't see why; humans treat us fairly over the work we do and a lot better than the Citadel does.”
“Ohh, it is a shame what happened to your people,” The old man said and all I could do was stare at him, because what else was there to say?
I just sighed and told the old man that I know, and he took that as confirmation and left. With the old man out of my hair, I opened my omni-tool and went about some calculations because Math is god! I had 5 in math and 10 in biology and I was already starting to crack the code on our immune system, but I wasn't happy with just that. Just to get here, I had to refine thousands of codes and still, the goal was nowhere in sight. All I had so far was one percent of one percent and it was not enough. It’s very much clear that I would need far more than just the two computers on my wrist, even with my fancy programming to split the load across the two.
Grunting at the program that I had made to solve the immune problem, I checked over its data and algorithms once more. I already knew that I had one of the more top-of-the-line codes in the universe, but one should never just settle. I was going to wring out every last drop of performance that I could. Once I was finished giving the code a once over, I went back to the list of things that I would need and the charges that I would need to spend. I already had energy fields, but I wanted to upgrade that to the Halo shields. I also wanted Destiny Arc tech along with titan armor modules. Along with those, I would also need to hit some Titan Fall for some charges into their jump packs and phase tech. A lot of what they used was standard technology for them so I wouldn’t need a lot of charges to get what I wanted.
Hell, maybe I would want to build a titan, but didn't have a place to store one or even the money and materials to build one. There were also a lot of places I could apply some more miniaturization and I would need to get that done when I got to the colony. I would need to make my kit the end all be all with a lot of flexibility thrown in and then replicate that over and onto a few suits. There were plans to redesign the under-suit along with the armor panels.
Another week came and went with another 20 charges spent which found me sitting at a workbench in the back of a mechanic shop. Once I got planet side, it wasn't that hard to pick up a job. Took me four hours to find a mechanic shop that wasn't close to the spaceport, the guy was easily located between the port and the outlands. The old man that ran the shop was a grumpy hard-as-nail sort, but he was also a man who judged those by work and actions, not word of mouth and I could appreciate that. The first test he had me do, to see if I was any good, was to have me diagnose a terminal, then work on a land bike. That first one was easy and the second got me very excited because I didn't know they still had motorcycles in Mass Effect.
To get anywhere in the citadel you needed a skycar and in the game you always had a mako. And the Quarians had nothing of the sort, so coming across an electronic motorcycle was a big win in my book. Hell, I was so excited to work on the damn thing I gave the game away and partially upgraded it before the old man Frederick stopped me. Luckily, I didn't get too far and only gave the system a 20% overall boost.
“What in the sam-hill you doing to that stick of yours kid?” Mr. Fredrick's asked from over my shoulder and I had to suppress the flinch that came reflexively.
With a smirk on my lips, I turned the left dial a few millimeters allowing more energy to enter the crystal even as I rotated the left dial to have the platform the crystal was sitting on rotate. This was one of the more big mad ideas that would help me reach my end goal, clearing my throat, I spoke up. “Creating a new focusing crystal instead of a lens.”
The crystal was made by growing it around the eezo core I pulled from an omni-tool that I had bought for cheap on the market. The idea behind this was to strengthen the fields that you could create with the eezo core while also giving the holographic interface a lot more solid structures. Also sticking the eezo inside of a stable structure would make up for a lot of issues later. Plus, the crystal would also help with isolation and insulation for when I started to throw around real powers.
Mr. Frederick grunts and shakes his upper lip, the mustache he wore shook and made him look more like Yosemite Sam than I really wanted to admit. “Alright, so what's it do?”
“Space magic bullshit,” I replied, my off-hand flipping the switch to turn off the lasers. With the main laser off, I hit the other button and mass effect fields sprang up around the table before two whomps came from the crystal. I hit another switch and waited for the scanner then smiled at the 100% sync rate. Leaning back into my chair, I shifted the opacity of my visor and turned to look Mr. Fredrick's in the eye. “With this, I can now use biotics abilities without being a biotic myself.”
Mr. Fredrick's whistled at that, “dadgum kid.”
Smirking at him, I pressed the release on my left gauntlet and then watched as Mr. Fredrick's eyebrows raised all the way into his hairline. The gauntlets that I was wearing were some of the most technologically advanced pieces of tech on the entire planet. The Gauntlets opened like a lotus flower revealing all four lawyers before I could get access to the eezo chambers. Grabbing a set of stabilizers, I took out the old eezo core and slotted in the new crystal. Closing the chamber, I had the system boot and then run diagnostics on everything. Being the corner cutter that I was, I had a few programs already pre-set to optimize the rest of my entire gear. There was a double beep of all clear and I looked down at my omni-tool to find a green bar for my power reading over 508%.
“Alright, kid, let me see what you can do with that fancy dohickey on your arm.” The old man gruffed, his mustache wiggling as he spoke.
With a smile, I got up from the workbench and followed the old man to the back of the mechanic's shop and out into the lot he stored a bunch of failed equipment and parts.
“Okay, brat, move that blue one over to that pile.” Old man Frederick commanded while pointing out a blue sky car with a crushed roof and over to a junker station with twenty mechanical arms. With a snap salute, I rolled my fingers to activate the gauntlets and then failed on my first attempt at using the force.
Blushing a light shade of purple, I looked down and brought up the status menu and noticed that the selection field was all wrong because the scanners couldn’t prioritize a specific target. And because it couldn't pick, the damn computer decided to just cancel the command as invalid. With a roll of my eyes, I opened the targeting solutions and fixed the issues before giving it another go.
This time, I was able to grab the car as if I was using The Force, the downside was I crushed it a bit. Placing the skycar down on the designated location, I then went about testing a few other things, for example, the localized vortex worked perfectly and even if it took more than a little asking. I still got the old man to fire my pistol at me and I was able to stop all rounds in mid-air a good half a meter from my body. Happy with that, I hit the mecha shift on my gauntlets and watched as they went from ordinary gloves to transform into a power fist. I did a few hooks and jabs before really giving the next target a powerful strike. The eezo activated on contact, the flux field destroyed the fridge on contact.
“dadgum kid, that's a mean one right there.” Mr. Fredrick's whistled with eyebrows vanishing upwards.
With a smile, I started powering things down even as I went about helping to clean up the area. Once everything was finished, the old man and I got back to work and before I knew it, the end of the day was here. With it being a Friday, I collected my weekly pay and then took the box of junk he agreed to let me have. Walking two blocks to the west had me arriving at my apartment in no time. Once the code was entered, I walked through the door and placed the box of parts in its own little inlet for decontamination protocols. Myself though, I had to stand and wait thirty seconds for the scanners to go over my body and make sure that I was clean. While I was waiting through decon, my own apartment was going through the same thing. Even the vents were being closed off and the ventilation would be put on a closed loop with scrubbers active.
There was a ping from my wrist and I had to tamper down on my excitement from what I was seeing. The green light couldn’t come fast enough as I sprinted from the sterilizer and to the far wall that was holding my very advanced quantum computer. It would need an upgrade once I put five points into meta-physics tomorrow.
Genetic Sequence #60392 Successful
The screen said the same thing as my omni. Pulling off my gloves and helmet, I looked over the data and almost squealed like a schoolgirl at the fact I would be able to not only eat dextro foods but also livo-protean foods. Excited, I pulled out a syringe, then placed some of my blood into the medical device at the side. With just a few more taps, I watched with bated breath as my blood sample was dosed with #60392.
Genetic Sequence #60392 Fail
Rage, that was how I felt, rage from deep inside of my fucking bones.
[ 48 days Later…]
The hiss from the medical pod woke me up with a start, my mind a little fogged over from the anesthetic. A hand came to rub at my face and I idly noted the sensation of all five fingers before cracking an eyelid and noticing my hand. The same hand that was rubbing the sleep out of my eyes with all five fingers on them. Ohh how amazing and blessed it was to have five fingers again, I curled my toes and smiled at the feeling of ten digits, Bio-cybernetic arms, and legs for the win.
Grabbing the edges of the medical pod, I sat up and took a look at the holo display and found all greens across the board. My new cyberpunk spinal implant worked perfectly even with the void sinks that I had created with my Destiny meta-physics. With all the points in biology and medical technology, all of my procedures went perfectly, even my body's recomposition. With all the charges in biology, it was easy to find the cure for the immune problem, but I didn’t want to be just like any normal person: , I wanted more. So I searched, and I kept on searching, until I came across the Vorcha and their non-differentiated cell clusters, which allowed them near unlimited adaptability with healing. Hell, there were even data points from the Salarian of the bastards surviving in space for a limited time or adapting to breathe other things than oxygen.
The other bit of medical data I was able to hack and get my hands on was the Krogans healing factor, talk about busted. So, with all that knowledge and tech at my fingertips, I put it all to work and made a serum that would not only cure all Quarians but give us a boost over the rest, exactly what the Citadel feared. Fuck them, I made far more advancements in the last few weeks for my people than they have made in the last hundred years.
With a grunt, I waved a hand to dismiss the holo and slipped my legs over the bed of the medical pod. Standing up, I made my way over to the full-length mirror so I could finally discover what I looked like. My purple skin now had an ethereal glow swirling underneath the surface that matched my deep and luminous purple eyes. A strong jawline along with sharp cheekbones marked me as clearly masculine. The mirror pegged my height at just over seven feet two inches of a badass warrior. The massive hair placed me as a space Viking and I almost couldn't get over the fact that my Quarian features rounded out with human ones clearly marked me as Awoken, and I was alright with that. If you were going to go for some advancements, looking like the Awoken wasn't a bad upgrade.
Ohh yeah, I could really get used to the new look. A mental command summoned my armor and I really had to admit, putting those points into Destiny Titan armor and Chozo technology was really paying off in spades. With charges in Star Trek replicators, Civilization molecular forgeing, and Alteran power generators, I was a one-man post-scarcity society all unto myself, even if everything was built and refurbished from junker parts. It was far too easy to get things off the ground with Mass Effects' own version of flash fabrications. Then to top it off, the old man let me work on anything I wanted to after hours, so years of work turned into just a few minor weeks. And all that was paying off and then some.
With a thought, my Titan armor flashed onto my frame and I took a second to really take in how far I came. Reinforced frame with synaptic muscle fibers, shield tech capable of taking shots fired by Dreadnoughts, and to top it all off. I had shape-change modular tech that came in the form of a hand blaster like Samus and Mega-man from the game,. And if I didn't want to use that, I could still use normal weapons. My hand blaster was going to be my backup for when people thought they had disarmed me. Both arms had grappling hooks with eezo fields to share the load.
Though, I couldn’t deny the weeb in me as I transformed my right then left arm into a mega buster. I did a charge to make sure both were working and even unleashed the energy hook. Once I had that retracted, I even spun up the built-in replicator and fabricated myself a rocket, then recycled that back into energy. There really was no hiding the shit-eating grin on my features. Turning on the spot, I took off at a dash toward one end of my medical labs, then ran up the wall across the ceiling and then down the other side, yeah speed boost was working. Unfortunately, I couldn't test all of the other armor powers I was able to slot in, what I was able to do though was boost my shield emitters from just three to over two hundred. Then I took that even further and instead of just having one seamless field, I split everything into octagons and then layered them on top of each other. I was ready for war and damn close to being an unstoppable juggernaut.
I then gave my hand a little flex, biotics flaring to life. One big misconception is that you had to be born biotic to be able to use biotic abilities. Humans showed that this was not the case and all it came down to was neural electrical impulses when they turned to neural implants. I had more than enough tech and biological charges to easily recreate the same thing. The big difference was that I wasn't going to flood my body with eezo and I also wanted more than just biotics at my finger-tips, that was why I went for the Light and also why I replaced my spine with a super upgraded cybernetic implant straight from Cyberpunk. Both would work for me even outside of armor. The biotics tree, though, was only for my people because I knew that if I opened the gates to the Travelers Light, all the discontent with the Citadel would come pouring out. Maybe I should set up my own Special Service team to help guard the Quarian people. Giving everyone access to biotics would put us on the same levels as the Asari and I was alright with that for now.
With a release of breath, my armor vanished back to its rack, leaving me in just my bodysuit. Since the armor checked out, it was time to activate the far more important things. Walking back over to where my medical pod sat idly in the middle of the room, I opened the access panel and hit the mecha shift function. Instantly the medical bed shifted into that of a medical seating area all with a control panel at the fingertips. A few taps brought up another holo-program that showed the x-ray of my head as I sat down in my medical chair. Everything was looking on the up and up and even the data feeds from the neural chip installed by the medical pod. Along with that, even my bio-synthetic eyes were working perfectly, the only step now was to activate both.
My hands flew through the boot sequence before the prompt for me to sit back in my chair flashed on the screen. I tasted oranges, then lemons, as the neural chip activated, then the world expanded right before my eyes. I felt everything from the smallest processor in the chair's servos to the outrageous processing speed of my system's more powerful processors. I could only describe it as the world stripping away and code becoming life. I commanded and everything obeyed, I didn't even need to press the activation key on my medical interface to activate my new eyes. It was more of the same, but with the added twist of being able to see in all of the visible spectrum, I could even see data streams through the air. It was as if I could just reach out and touch the data, then command it to do my bidding. I was clearly no longer just an ordinary Quarian, I was a Super Quarian and that was alright with me.
Sitting in my medical chair for another quick hour saw myself playing with my new upgrades and I couldn't dismiss the cool cyberpunk feeling. I even had the sleek silver lines that ran down from my eyes and across my cheeks. With everything in place and working as it should, I stood up and activated the forge to build my street gear. Rocket boots, cargo pants, and a red jacket like I was in Michael Jackson’s thriller with my own shielding tech thrown in. Can't lie and say that I didn't enjoy my new Star-Lord looks, because damn I look good.
Walking over to another rack, I stared at what could possibly be one of the most powerful weapons on the planet, my Power Staff with a capital P. Anything and everything that I could think of was inside of this staff, anywhere from the Gravity Hammer of the Halo series, to tonfa's, even holo-emitters to recreate a few types of laser swords and axes. Hell, the staff could even be split along the middle, folded over, and work as a close-quarters shotgun, along with so much more.
Reaching out and feeling the power underneath my fingertips, I smiled as the staff mecha shifted around before shrinking down to the size of a twelve-inch ruler. Placing it on the mag-clamps on my side, I turned around and walked to the far door. Putting my hand on the digital pad, I smiled as it read my fingerprints and logged me as administrator. The door opened and I strolled into a dimly lit room with a gigantic ultra quantum computer floating in the middle glowing a faint purple. Three charges into meta-materials, twenty in physics, another twenty in meta-physics, various charges in the replicator and molecular forge type knowledge, and another twenty points into Destiny’s meta-physics, and it all accumulated into this one thing. Hours of work, so many charges, and unimaginable knowledge all for the chance at gaining access to the light of Destiny.
My excitement was palpable, wasting no time, I strolled across the room and pushed my hand into the open interface slot. With a silent count of three, I nutted up and shut up while grabbing the handle available to me and setting my legs, I turned the handle with a solid rotation. The sound of a solid clunk rang around the room, then the world twisted. I was all and I was no-one, I was a giant, and then I was smaller than the speck of dust floating through the wind. The edges of my mind stretched to its breaking point as I studied molecule by molecule. This stretched for what could easily have been called eternity: my hopes, dreams, and fears all stripped from my being as the very essence of my soul was inspected. At the end of it all, the Traveler found my goals worthy.
Then, I was deposited once more in my lab, strength within my limbs, a spark of light floated around my body. Laying in the fetal position, I found my neural implant updated me with the time, exasperation took me as only five seconds had gone by. I could have said that was impossible, but I was also the moron playing with levels of technology that were capable of reaching Gods, with a capital G.
“Hello Guardian, are you well?” The Ghost hovering around me asked, his little optic scanning my form.
With a grunt, I steadied myself before standing up, “Yeah, just not used to my soul being examined.”
“Well, it's not every day someone connects across dimensions to have a chat with the Traveler, or even succeed.” The Little Ghost stated as he bobbed up and down.
Patting myself down, I checked to make sure I hadn’t soiled myself, then looked up and asked a very important question, “True so, you got a name little buddy?”
He went silent for a time, his little open spinning in place, the same with his shell interface, “No, I don't have a name.”
He sounded a little down, but I was ready to cut that off, “Then I’ll call you Ent like the three people in the Tolkien books or Ent short for Entropy.”
The little ghost floated around and spun before doing a little up and down, “Thank you, Guardian.”
“Alright, let's get you hooked into my systems, then I need to go topside,” I commented even as I started for the door of the room, my neural chip obeying my commands and sending all of the protocols to the little ghost. Things moved rapidly after that as I closed out my apartment and labs.
An hour later found me in the mechanic’s shop regaling the old man about my super medical procedure and my hopes to cure my people. Before I got to the mechanic's shop, I strolled down the street and ignored all the looks they directed my way. I had enough respect for the old man that I wanted him to see my new look first, but that didn't stop everyone from being interested in the massive guy walking down the street in a Quarian enviro suit.
Ignoring them, I walked myself to the corner and then right into the shop. With a look around, I found the old man on a sled and right underneath one of the sky cars.
“Hey old man, I’m back from my weekend escapade,” I called out then gave one of his legs a light kick to know it was me.
“Argh, damn it boy,” Old man Fredricks grumped, slammed the tool he was using against the car, then pulled himself from underneath the car. “What I tell you bout scaring the daylights outta me.”
Smirking at him, I knelt down to get on eye level.
“What in the hell, boy that you?” The old man asked, eyes squinting at me.
With a thought, the face-plate to my helm retracted then the rest of my helm followed as it miniaturization routine into the collar.
“Shit, shit, shit, what are you doing boy, you gonna die.” Mr. Fredricks freaked the fuck out at the fact I was just kneeling in his shop without my protection. Even if this was a human colony, things had gotten to the point that even the humans knew about Quarians and their compromised immune systems.
Smiling at him, I spoke and cut across his mild panic. “Remember what I told you when we first met?”
“Yeah, something bout human colonies allowing you to solve…. Well shit kid, congratulations.”
Giving him some space, I allowed Mr. Fredrick's to get up and clean the oil and other lubricants from his person before letting him inspect my features. Standing to my full height of seven feet two inches in the break room, I gave the old man a slow turn as he inspected me from top to bottom.
“So what do you think?” I asked a little smug in my voice to hide that I wanted his praise.
The old man scratched at his chin, then ran a hand along his awesome mustache. “Well, it's clear you put some muscle on with that new height and I noticed what you did to your hands and feet, don't let those stooges back at the Citadel know about that. Heard they were the real stuck-up types and I saw that bullshit treaties those fuck ups back in Parliament signed but all in all, I think you might be prettier than an Asari, boy.”
I smiled with a savage grin on my face, “This isn't Citadel space, plus the fact that it's a human colony put me well outside of their jurisdiction. The only people who can bring me up on charges is the System Alliance and since I didn't go around kidnapping people for experiments. Even they can't do anything, since by your people's laws that I abide by, I didn't do anything against the law.” I shrugged at the old man. “I had the computer run millions upon millions of combinations and permutations until I got something that would work and even then. I still had it run the same battery of tests with a blood sample all over again. No way I was going to put something bad inside of my body and I only fixed my immune system, stayed clear away from the gene mods.”
Mister Fredrick waved an arm towards my large frame, “Then why are you so big?”
I shrugged my shoulders, “Stims, heard about this little drug you guys outlaw in sports called steroids. Looked up the data on it, then turned it into a super juice to go with a massive calorie dense nutrition paste. It was easy to apply it to my biology after that.”
The man looked at me, then facepalmed and I had to hide my chagrin, because even if some of it was bullshit, more than half of it was true. The legal stuff was on point and it wasn't until Mr. Fredricks had introduced me to a football game that I remembered Steve Rogers and his infamous serum. There was none of that in this universe and I sure as shit wasn't going to waste a charge on the damn thing, even if I had a lot of charges to spare. Only a moron would put all of his eggs in one basket and I wasn’t about to risk the chance of mental pollution when it came to a serum that made bad more evil and good stubborn as a fucking brick wall.
Maybe if I had more time, but it would seem that I was all out of that as I looked up and noticed the massive fucking traffic data going on along with alot of SOS and ships jumping to FTL. The Batarians were here and they were taking no prisoners.
“Shit,” I said the words slipping out of my mouth as I came to the realization that I might have designed a ship, but it was not built and I had no way of getting up there and helping the defenses.
Mr. Fredrick's tapped me with a beer can, “Well, spit it out boy, what's going on to have you looking so damn gloomy.”
With a grimace on my face, I took the beer, popped the top, and downed it in one go,“ Baturians are here and they are burning through the defenses.”
At the end of my statement, I brought up my omni-tool and opened my sensor and communications program. In bright bold red letters were the warning and SOS. The sad part was I knew about this far before the colony citizens did, well not before those in power knew. The old man blinked a few times and then started to release a set of curses and vitriol that impressed even me.
“Why haven’t the alarms sounded, why aren't they directing anyone to the shelters?” The old man asked as he pulled my hand closer to him. I had to roll my eyes and pull my hand back.
“I can't find out with you holding onto my hand like that.” With my piece said, I got to work hacking through the pathetic programs that the System Alliance called a firewall only to discover the colony governor was on the line with System Alliance as they scrambled a patrol to get out here. The worse part was we were on our own for the next twelve to twenty-four fucking hours.
The old man grunted then poked my omni, “Boy, can you sound the alarm from that thing?”
“Yeah,” I replied with a shrug.
“Then do it,” Mr. Frederick commanded, then started to walk back into the mechanic's shop. I followed along as he walked up to a far locker that was filled with cleaning supplies because I was the one that not only put them there, I was also the last one to use them and clean the damn shop. What I wasn’t expecting was his hand to move a hidden panel and press his palm to the face. Well, I’ll be damned, this was turning into some James Bond type of adventure, don’t mind if I do, though.
The panel slid open to reveal some old N7 armor and I was shocked, to say the least. Okay, that was all I needed to see before I pulled my shit together and sent a manufacturing order to my fabricators. There was no way in hell I was going to leave the old man to be shooting those ugly little pea shooters.
When the old man reached for the gun inside of the locker, I placed a hand on his shoulder and shook my head, “I got the good stuff, leave that.”
Then I made a head motion for him to follow and took off at a sprint while working on the hack with my omni-tool. As we got to my apartment, the door swung open for me and I directed the old man to a bathroom for him to get changed into his armor. I on the other hand went directly to the fabricators and took the new shield module along with a phaser shaped like an advanced auto rifle.
When old man Frederick walked out of the bathroom dressed in his N7 gear, I showed him how to hook up the shield belt along with adding it to his suit systems. Then I handed the old bastard the phaser rifle and he looked as if I gave him a box of sour lemons.
"Boy, don't you have something smaller than this?" Fredrick asked, clearly not happy with the rifle. Okay, maybe I was still slow on the uptake but then I remembered his old cowboy mustache and almost face-palmed. A quick command to the fabricators brought up two weapons, the one on the left was printed from an updated version of the Ace of Spades, and the one on the right was built from the Last Word blueprint. Both were powered by the disrupter tech that came from my Star Trek branch of technology and with my advanced molecular forge and replicator, both weapons were cooked up in less than 20 seconds. While that was happening, I summoned my armor and got ready for war.
Two sleek mean looking handguns slid out in mass effect fields and I made a motion for him to pick one up. Both pistols had miniature graphene fusion batteries that could generate their own power and also be quickly charged. The old man gave me a smile and then placed the Last Word on the mag clamps at his thigh, The Ace of Spades went to my left mag clamp, I then grabbed the large shield module that was easily the same size as a duffle bag with hand holds. The old man was on my heels as I dashed out of my apartment.
"Alright kids, it's clear you got a plan instead of meeting up with the defense forces." Fredrick huffed hot on my heels.
I kicked the backdoor to the shop open and marched my way up the stairs to the roof, "portable city shields, zero point energy reactor, good for the next 10,000 years give or take." I started my hands flying across the control panel, up above all the sky cars flew around in crazed panic as the colony sirens blared warnings.
"Impossible," The old man stated with furrowed brows at me.
I shrugged back, as the modular city shield started to spin itself up as it awoke with my authorization key. Turning around to give the old man my attention as it shot boundary buoys into the air, I asked, “By Citadel or human standards?”
“What does that matter?” Mr. Fredrick asked with a confused expression on his face.
“Because my tech is my tech and falls way outside the bounds of their lacking standards,” I stated with a shake of the head. “Even back in the flotilla, I put forward written papers on getting away from our dependence on eezo, but no one listened because politicians are morons like that.” I stated because I could clearly remember the times which amazed me at how thorough ROB was in his setup. “Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I’m the smartest man alive.”
“Yeah, from my experience politicians are like that everywhere.” Mr. Frederick grumped, then made a hand motion towards the device. “You know everyone is gonna want that right?”
Snorting, I turned around and activated the cloak on the device, then took a step back as a bubble shield formed around its exterior. “Yeah, but I doubt that the System Alliance is going to stab me in the back openly when I help to defend a colony, plus they would have to agree to my contracts or get nothing,” I stated then gave the old man a very savage grin. “Anyone who tries and steals my tech without paying for it will get a nasty surprise. I already plan to not sell to the big three, so the Alliance will either play ball or get nothing.”
“Not worried about the STG and the Specters?” Frederick asks as he shuffled around on the roof, his gaze upwards as the flashes from orbit finally made themselves known.
“I enjoy using the human expression, FUCK’EM,” I grunted, pulled my collapsed power staff from the mag clamps then gave it a hard shake. I stood silently against the world as my staff mecha shifted from its dormant form into a giant bow, the hard-light emitters actively showing targeting and the eezo plasma charge and the strength of the fields. Squaring up my chest, I noticed a small pen-sized arrow and waited for the mecha shift to finish changing the five-inch pen into that of a six-foot arrow. Hell, I could even hear the old man mutter that I wasn't using an arrow, I was using a damn javelin.
I notched, pulled back, and tried to hide the giddy smile off my face as I looked right past the atmosphere and out into the stars. My draw was to full power and the projected trajectory put my shot directly out of the atmosphere and into any of the ships that flew through my field of fire.
The Alliance ship dodged the path of two pirate ships, and I let my arrow fly, it was two for one as the front ship exploded. I watched in slow motion as the arrow spun on contacts and burrowed through the bridge window of the slaver ship. The four eyes of the Baterian pirate all widened in shock, yet he wasn't able to do anything. Before he could even shout an order or even before the vacuum of space could evacuate the pressure out of the bridge of the ship, the arrow exploded. I aimed another, then another, and kept going before it was clear that the Alliance craft were retreating to the colony.
Bringing down my bow, I gave it another command and shook as it mecha shifted into a more manageable weapon.
“Damn kid.”
Ignoring the old man, I pulled up my omni and went about clearing the IFF tags of the System Alliance ships that were in orbit. The hovering buoys that the shield emitter had launched in the air rearranged themselves to allow the proper ships to breach the shields before closing once more to keep the Batarans out. Before I could answer, the old man’s omni came to life and we both turned our attention to it, only to discover it is an all-call for the defense militia.
The old man read it, was silent for a bit, and then grunted, “Tell me the truth kid, will that thing be alright if we leave it here?”
I looked at him and then made sure my programs were in place, then pulled out a set of bee drones, “Yeah, it's going to relocate to one of the larger buildings in the center of the colony so the shielding coverage will be better. And these worker bees will protect it from anyone trying to approach.”
“Alright, on my six, the defense is gathering and I would rather have you at my elbow watching these old bones.” Old Man Fredrick grumped.
The old man took off running and I was right on his heels.
“Guardian, might I make a suggestion?”
The voice that broke in across my implant almost made me stumble and crash into a nearby wall as the old man pulled open the door on his old beater of a sky car. Sumbitch, how in the hell could I forget that I had a ghost on me?
“Hit me,” I said and the old man shot me a look even as he was flying through heavy traffic. My ghost flowed out of my body with a burst of light and old man Fredrick almost crashed us in surprise.
“I have reviewed the profiles that you have compiled about the various species and I would like to suggest you face the leader of the pirate band in honorable combat,” Ent stated, his access to my hologram system activated to show the Batarian Hegemony and their bylaws.
Now, I was interested and nearly all in. “Go ahead Ent, who is the leader of this Warband, and can you locate his ship?”
“I don’t know kid, these are Batarian slaver pirates, not too sure they're all about that honor, you know.” Mr. Frederick stated even as he pulled us down to the parking spot. Looking out the window, a lot of people were gathering and I’ll be damned, Fem Ship was in this reality. With a shake of the head, I dismissed that thought because I would not be simping today, I got shit to do.
As I got out of the sky car, my ghost floated right after me, “Udako Gheg’pork, and he is on the ship located at the back of the fleet in orbit.”
Both Fredrick and I stopped to turn, and then gave Ent a look even as he showed the hologram and what could only be called a minor fleet in orbit. Now I understood why the ships were pulling back, they were damn near outgunned and it was a good tactical decision to preserve what they had currently. With a shake of the head, I made a hand motion and Mr. Fredrick turned and kept on walking. As we got to the group, it was clear that Shepard was closing out her rousing speech as the colonists that were part of the militia were more than rallied and ready to fight.

“Fredrick you old coot, I heard you were coming in with a VIP or some bullshite, say it ain't so.” Called an old man who was wearing armor that clearly saw better days.
“Yeah, yeah, keep your shirt on Mackie, kid that's Mackie; Mackie meet the kid,” That was all Mr. Fredricks said before sharing a very old man bro handshake, biceps flexing, and everything, I could not unsee that. “Now show me where those useless politicians are.”
“Yeah, yeah, they over there by the landing pad and that fancy-looking sky limo.” Mackie answered and I gave a small wave before following behind Mr. Fredrick. It didn’t take us long to cross the distance and from what I could see into the tent from the outside. They had a choke point already picked out for the defense force.
Those returning ships are going to flank from the left here after leaving the colony and swinging around.” A voice stated from what was clearly the command tent. “I want those ships grounded as of yesterday.”
We walked directly in and took a spot around the back and I watched as a few people gave Mr. Fredrick nods of deference, it was clear the old man was a staple of the colony, N7 armor or not.
“Alright, you have your orders, now get to it,” The person who was clearly the commander spoke as people jumped to attention and started to get shit done. The coordination was actually impressive and I spied Shepard coming in through the other flap and stopping at the commander's shoulder a little bit back.
The commander looked me over and gave me a gimlet eye, “So want to share with the class how you were able to shoot down ships in orbit without orbital cannons son?”
Shrugging, I had to keep my smirk hidden, “Ohh, that's easy, just some pretty judicious use of applied force.”
“Funny, and what is this I hear about a city shield, where you get tech like that?” Now the commander had a raised bow and knew that I was talking pure bullshit, but we were on a timer.
“You know how it is when you’re in a garage with a box of scraps,” I replied with a shrug.
“Listen, son, I need to know that you are willing to make sacrifices with us in defense of this colony,” The commander spoke, his gaze flat.
Now, it was my turn to give the man a flat look, “Sir, I don’t think you can even begin to understand the sacrifice I have made in the defense of these people.” I took a breath and kept the anger down. “Because of these pirate scumbags, my tech is now out in the world. The same tech that I have been working on with my blood sweat and tears to hopefully one day allow my people to live a better life, and it's now all out in the wild. Once this is over, I can’t even stay here anymore because the STG and Specters will be crawling over the place in hopes of killing me and stealing my advancements.”
“Son, the system alliance can protect you.” The commander stated with steel in his voice and I didn’t doubt the sacrifice he would make one bit.
“I don’t doubt you sir, but your own politicians sold out their people and I can't risk that with me being the hope of my own.”
The commander released a long breath, “I’m not going to lie to you, we need that shield tech.”
“It will be up until we can run the pirates off.” I started, then hit a few buttons and shared the information about the shield to his omni.
The commander was silent for a time, “There is nothing I can say to change your mind?”
Sadly, all I could do was shake my head,
“No sir, not right now, in the future though maybe in a year or two. They will be on the market for a very select few.”
The commander grumped after a time, “Well, that's better than nothing, and from the way you stated that, the System Alliance is on that short list isn't it.”
This time I gave him a sharp nod of the head, “Humanity has given my people a fair chance even if some fell into the Csec and Citadel propaganda. And a fair chance is far better than no chance.” The Commander grunted once more at me,
“Fine, you're on the line with Shepard though.”
The Fem Shep behind him gave me a hard nod and then said her peace to the commander before turning on the spot and leaving. With one last look at Mr. Fredrick, I was right on her heels. When I got outside of the command tent, I found Shepard barking orders before she jumped into a funky-looking space jeep. All I could think was, thank all that was holy it wasn’t a makko. Ignoring the looks of those around me, I jumped into the passenger seat and shrugged when Shep glanced at me.
Holding on as Shepard gunned the little space buggy, we drove in silence before she couldn't take it anymore.
“So what are you?” Shepard asks, one hand on the wheel and the other hanging out the driver's side.
“Quarian,” I stated with a straight face, Shep paused, but I ignored her to go over a few basic plans on my omni-tool.
“Bullshit,” Shepard started with a look of shock on her features.
Humming to myself as I looked over the way the shields were set on one display, then on the other, I checked over how the Batarians were hammering away with their weapons. I made the command decisions to funnel them through one opening. With that in mind, I sent the information back to the Commander while Shepard and I arrived at the front.
When we came to a stop, Shepard slammed a hand onto the dash and turned to face me, “Bullshit, you can’t be Quarian, I have read the files on them, you have five fingers and clearly human legs.”
That caused me to snort as I held up my hand and flexed my digits, “Nothing a little cybernetics couldn’t fix.” If only she knew that this wasn’t even half of the chrome I had in me. When you reach a certain level of points with Inspired Inventor, things like mantis blades aren't even a dream or vision, it's reality. Modularity and miniaturization along with a bunch of other perks for the win.
Shepard looked at me as if I had lost my mind, but before she could answer, the omni on her wrist beeped along with my own. From what I could read, weapon emplacements would be in place soon, but the Commander had already given the order for me to switch off a section of the shields. He wanted to go ahead and face the Batarian instead of giving them a chance to set up a beachhead or siege other parts of the planet. Smart move and I was surprised that he added extra information for me.
From what I knew about the slapdash shield I made, I could move the emitters around to meet my needs even if I was going to open one section. I could just put the four emitters that make up the octagon lattice on this side and spread them out around the other more vulnerable locations. Walking to the front with Shep, I waited until we were behind a fortified bunker before holding a hand up for the count of 5.
Once the count dropped to one, a wedge in the shield was opened and all hell broke loose. The militia was using small arms, but those in the system Alliance that had survived up to this point, were using true blue eezo tech assault rifles. With a shake of the hand, my power star mecha shifted into that of my war bow and the VOID thrummed in my veins. Power flowed through my limbs and I jumped the LIGHT singing in my ears, the multi-teather shot forming instinctively.
I loosed the VOID arrow and floated a little as it flew true, with a smirk, I landed lightly on the balls of my feet right next to Shepard behind the defenses. Shepard walked over to me with a frown on her face, “You missed.”
With a laugh that reached my eyes, I slapped her on the shoulder and pointed, “They think so too.”
She narrowed her eyes at me, but it was clear that she could put the parts together with the context clues that I had given her. The Batarian on the other hand had laughed at my shot and poured through the opening in the shield like a forceful wave, but they all crashed along the shoreline that was my tether shot as purple anchors shot outwards and yanked them all down. That was all Shepard needed as she called for open fire. As I stood at the side, I released arrow after arrow while I took stock of my body.
The Light was there buzzing at my fingertips, but the Void. The Void felt diminished in a way, not gone just less. Yet, even as it felt less, I could still feel the void slowly welling up inside. The other thing that I noticed was the roaring flames and right next to that was the soft crackle of ozone. Sidestepping a sniper shot, I could only deduce that I was carrying all three branches of the light.
Changing the plasma core of my arrow to detonation type, I released it and then turned my attention to the flying attack craft as my arrow exploded the Batarian's chest into chunky salsa. With my aim shifted, I notched two arrows, pulled to 70% power, and unleashed them. Both arrows screamed across the space between me and my target, streaks of light impacting and blowing up the wings of the attack craft.
Putting my bow onto my back quickly, I then activated my arm cannon, with gravity emitter selected, I lined up the shot. This time though, I was too late as Shepard showed that she was an all-natural biotic and hit the craft with a biotic warp. It went down in a flaming scrap heap. Okay, I gave her that one because it would take some real skill to hit a fast-moving ship from our location, I didn't count because I was a cheating, cheater as it should be. Shepard smirked at me, then raised a brow at the massive mega buster I had for an arm. A mental command had things shifted back into compression space before I pulled my war bow from my back. With that one shot, things boiled down into pop and shoot as the pirates took up a defensive position at the only gap in the shield. If only they knew that we were only waiting on reinforcements.
[3 Days Later]
15 charges banked
The thrusters to my pack glowed a light blue as I dug deep and ran along the side of a building two blocks from the city shield entrance. On the street below, Shepard ran hard parkouring over fallen objects to slide into position on the firing line. From where I was high above the battlefield, I watched as Shepard unleashed an overload burst onto the heavy gunner platform that Batarians were using and I took that as my cue. Solar energy roared down my limbs alighting my body with the holy glow of a supernova.
I grabbed onto the edge of the ledge of the building and pulled myself up even as I sprinted to the opposite end towards the crossroads. Pulling my power staff from my back, I allowed the mecha shift to transform the power staff into a gravity hammer. Then pair that with the solar energy roaring in my veins, it was time to put the hammer down. I reached the edge as all that solar energy finally burst through the dam as it flowed down my arms.
With a full sprinted leap, I dug deep and then pushed off from the edge of the building's ledge. Easily I soared anywhere between a good fifty feet, the arc so beautiful that I just might recreate this scene in a holo-vid later. With a roar from my heart, I came down on the heavy gunner technical with my solar hammer, there was a mighty KRA-THOOM as the platform exploded beneath the hammer of SOL. Standing to my full height of seven feet two inches, I reached into the flames with my off hand as I pulled a flame seeker out. An underhanded flick sent the hammer made of solar energy into the chest of a Batarian exploding and charring him on contact.
While he ashed, I shifted my grip to the middle of my massive fuck off solar sledge-hammer and gave his partner a love tap to the head. Using the momentum, I came around and slammed it into the chest of another who was offloading his weapon into my shields. As if my mixture of the deflector and kinetic shields would budge. If he knew that I was using Galaxy class ship-level shields for my run-of-the-mill Titan armor, the poor sap would run for the hills.
Shepard appeared at my side with my loaned-out weapon, the Ace of Spades raised and fired off rounds rapidly with a grim look in her eyes along with a rising level of intensity that matched my own. Putting the hammer away, I swapped my solar for the void, then summoned a sentinel shield that I sent out to knock the heads of a few Batarians.
“Eyes up, we got incoming,” Shepard shouted, which pulled my attention from a few asshats, my sentinel shield vanishing into thin air. Swiftly turning around to see where Shepard was looking, I noticed the two shuttles inbound with even more pirate slavers.
“Guardian, might I suggest something…. Bigger!” Ent stated with more than a little trepidation tinting his voice. With a shake of my head, I pulled out my mega buster and lined up a shot, and began to charge up. It only took a few seconds to get a charge powerful enough to take both ships, and that was all I needed. My track was on the lead ship, but I honestly didn't need to aim because the only way into the colony was through the only open door.
Dropping down in a low crouch so that my center of gravity was set low in case the kick back tried to knock me over. Patiently I held the charge, and patiently I waited even as the world exploded around my location, Shepard doing all that she could to cover my ass.
Tracking…
Tracking…
Tracking…
FIRE!!!!
Inside the compressed space of the charge cannon, I applied the five pounds of pressure that it would take with my middle finger even as my index held down the charge activation trigger. To my sight, the world slowed to a crawl as I noticed stray photons gathering before the blaster port, then my charge particle cannon unleashed unholy hell. The air distorted, the moisture vaporized and the ground cracked as it was torn asunder. The dampers within my helm popped as a mighty kra-thoom sounded out along with the shock wave that propagated outwards. Everything before me disintegrated into fine ash, the ground was molten and the two ships were nothing but faint energy trails.
Not only were those around me stunned by the display, but even I was as I had no idea that a fully powered charged beam would be so devastating. This was clearly a ship killer weapon and I had one strapped to my arm, madness. Red warning lights flashed onto my head surprising me, and I had to hold my arm out as the focusing crystal matrix was ejected and subsequently exploded for destabilization. With a grimace I had the canon mecha shift back into a dormant state while diagnostics ran in the background.
"Maybe you should lead with that next time," Shepard stated as she walked close, but I could see the side eye she was giving the destroyed landscape. Before I could say anything and reply, Shepard put her hand to her ear and leaned to the side. Shaking my head at Ent, I kept him from breaking into the communications because I think it was easy to figure out what was happening. The wide eyes then smug smirk that Shep gave me said more than enough and now I was on a time clock, help had arrived.
Since help was here, this meant that STG and the Specters weren’t very far behind, I had to pack my shit and get out of dodge like yesterday. Looking upwards, I watched as my HUD pierced the atmosphere surrounding the planet and witnessed the slaughter that was taking place. With a shake of my head, I dismissed my helm and Shep noticed my grim resolution. Holding a hand out to the side, a sparrow digi-struct came into existence and I threw a leg over before mounting. Borderlands and Destiny combination for the win.
Before I could take off, Shepard was there at my side, hand on the handlebars, “Wait, where are you going?”
“Back to clear out my place before the STG or any Specters land.” I replied then looked at her hand that was still on the bar.
Shepard blinked a few times confused and I could see the gears already turning, “Are you certain?”
“Yup,” I replied while popping the P, then brought up my Omni-tool and projected the current solar systems and right there on the edge of System Alliance and Baturian sensor range were a lone STG ship, lurking.
“I need to vacate before they come to claim my gear because it obviously couldn’t be made by a suit rat.”
“The System Alliance can and will protect you,” Shepard stated with a frown on her face, eyes locked onto the lone STG ship.
With a shake of my head, I sent her the coordinates, “The most I can expect is delaying actions but no government body will stick their neck out for a lone Quarian, if I was human maybe, but I’m not so I can be sacrificed if the STG offer to split my tech with those in power.”
“Okay, how long do you need?” Shepard asked, then threw her leg over the back of my sparrow.
Shaking my head from side to side as I crunched some crazy numbers, ideas filtering through my skull faster than the speed of light. A massively crazy idea came to me and I turned and gave Shepard a crazy smile, “I need at least 72 hours of delaying action before I can get off world, can you get me that?”
“You sure that’s all you need?” Shepard asked concern in her voice. Giving her a firm nod, I revved the sparrow and took off at speed while the rest of the militia cleaned up the mess behind us. Winded kicked up behind us as I made sure to blaze a trail across the colony until we got to my apartment, not even waiting for a full stop. I hopped from the back of my sparrow and dashed into my apartment with the door banged open and left there as I started to activate the shit out of luck protocols. The signal went out around my apartment, then the classic transformer sound played before everything folded in on itself with my skills in modularity and miniaturization on full display.
Within ten minutes everything was packed up and followed behind on a little train-like procession. Since I didnt turn off my sensor suite, I placed them on top of the little line of bay cars behind me as I made for the door. Shepard was shocked to discover that I had excavated at least two more rooms downward to add more lab space. Walking past Shepard, I turned around and then hit my clean house program, the same program that would go through and deleted all the data on my stay here. No data on my network connection, no data on the amount of power I used, not even an image from the security system of me walking around.
Not even looking back, I started down the street towards the old man's mechanic shop with Shepard right on my heels. When I got to the mechanic shop, I found Mr. Fredrick and the Militia Commander already there waiting for me. Shooting Shepard a glance, I got a shrug in return but that was alright.
“How long have you got kid?” Mr. Fredrick asked, his voice smooth yet gruff and I noticed the smudge of dirt on his face.
Bringing up my omni, I showed them the current scan of the solar system with a clock ticking down. “Little over 72 hours and dropping swiftly, a jammer program is working to cut off the STG with a lot of white noise.”
The Commander was not happy with that and I could see him compare the information with the one I had given to Shepard and she had sent up the totem pole. The Commander nodded at me, then made a comment about there being a lot of clean up to schedule and no one except System Alliance would be landing on the planet and the all clear would not be called for at least a week's time. I didn't need a week but there was no way I was going to give up the help even if all he could do was delay the action.
The Commander left and I turned to Mr. Frederick frowning at me, “Well, don’t just stand there kid, what else do you need?”
“Space, I need enough to hold a cruiser or a frigate.” I replied with a snap, my crazy idea already at the forefront of my mind. The plans for a bare bones skeleton ship builder like what they used in Star Trek already in my mind's eye, the neural implant already sending designs and data to the molecular forge, the replicators, and the fabrication builders.
The old man thought for a moment, then shot Shepard a look, “I may have something, but I’ll have to call in a favor and the Lt can get us where we need to go.”
Shepard raised a brow at Mr. Fredrick, “And where is that?”
“Docking bay F23.” The old man grunted before turning and striding towards a far skycar still inside of its docking clamps.
Giving Shepard a look, I found that she was already at work on her omni-tool to get things set up.
“Well, don’t just stand there, let's go.”
That's all the signal that I needed as I jumped into the back of the sky vehicle that looked like a futuristic pickup truck. Letting Shepard take the passenger seat along with my gear, we held on for dear life as the old man gunned it hard. Mag clamps activated and I tried not to whoop in joy as the old man took a turn going easily over ninety miles per hour. We traveled at high speed for a time and barely even stopped as we reached the gate. Whatever Shepard had done coming over had made sure that we weren’t stopped but the old man at least allowed them to scan us before we entered the base. Those same scans I of course destroyed because fuck the STG and Cerberus.
When we pulled up to the Docking bay F23, an old man was already standing outside of the docking bay along with the Commander, he moved fast. Hoping out of the back of the sky truck, I walked over with Shep and Fredrick and got the rundown of the Docking bay. Unleashing my clean slate program once more, I followed the group down the hallway and into a gigantic cavern that was easily large enough to house a battleship or something equally the same size. Hell, I could have even bet money on the largest aircraft carrier from my time, the USS Gerald R. Ford, could have fit inside of here at least two times over.
Standing at the edge of the bay, the old man kicked an empty bottle over the side. Once we heard it connect with the bottom of the bay, the old man turned and gave me a sharp look, “Alright kid, you got the space, show me what you got.”
With a chuckle, I turned around and started to command my gear to expand, four Star Trek fabricators expanded to the size of a large double stacker bus. I placed two on each side of the bays. My three combination type molecular forges made with a mixture of Alteran and Civilization beyond Earth technology expanded, one on either side of the bay along with one at the top. The one up top was also joined with a digi-struct fabricator courtesy of Borderlands because man that was a wildly insane tech that was extremely under utilized and overlooked. The full set up took me an hour even with my more than sufficiently advanced Mass Effect fields, enhanced by my energy fields perk, overhauling the technology. Then again, I was moving items that were hundreds of tons instead of little weights.
Shepard was looking at me with a very interested look, but it was the Commander that made me firm in my goals of getting the fuck out of dodge. With everything set in place, I then used the mass effect fields to clear out the docking bay of the old stacked debris then created docking clamps once I set up my ZPM battery station. With everything powered, docking clamps were the first things to be made and then I started with the bare bones of bare bones, a super alloy to make up the skeleton. In my data-banks, I had neosteel, durasteel and transparisteel, beskar, along with a few samples of naquadah. Not only was I playing with all the good stuff, but I was also thinking about how I could recreate necrodermis for my ship because self healing metals would be a massive win. The issue was that I absolutely did not want to dip my toe into Warhammer 40k bullshit. If I wanted self healing metal without the added bullshit, I would have to venture down the nanotech tree, but that was not going to be today.
With all the orders plugged into my machines, I kicked one of the cases and a hundred mini drones flew outwards. The same drones I wanted to keep under wrap and use later to help build the first Quarian city would need to be used today to help me build my ship so I could get the fuck out. Walking over to the side, I checked over everything and then had Ent crunch the numbers for me. The frame came out at six hours, the armor plating at twelve hours, the engines five hours and the internals would take another twelve because of the dimensional compression that I was planning to use. Last but not least, the weapons systems that I wanted was another four hours to fabricate and install.
When the Ent finished crunching the numbers, the totals put me right underneath forty two hours and at thirty nine and change, hot damn. Turning around, I left the drones to do their thing while I found myself a place to put down a nice cot, medical station and set some defenses in case anyone decided on some pesky night operations.
“What are you doing,” Shepard asked from the side and I turned to look and found that Fredrick had left along with his friend and took the Militia Commander along with him. Blinking a few times, I checked my time and found that nearly an hour had already come and gone, damn.
Fabricating a few quick chairs, I sat down with a sigh and motioned towards the other, “What I am doing is setting up a spot where I can catch some shut eye and still be around for any infiltrators.”
Shepard stood for a minute and stared me down and I could see the gears in her head wondering if I was being truthful or not. I watched as she shrugged then smirked at me, “If you can set up a armor rack, we can get something to eat and I’ll help you guard your tech.”
Seeing nothing wrong with that, I had one of my personal fabricators create the parts for a quick and easy armor rack, then helped Shepard. She was even more stunned when I ordered us up a pair of steaks along with the stove to cook it on top of.
Standing over my shoulder, I could feel her body heat as she asked something I thought she would let slide, “Can you order the steak cooked?”
I did a couple turns of the salt, and pepper, then dropped some butter in the skillet, “Yes, and even with the finely arranged atoms and molecular structures of the steak, it's still in essence energy in solid form. Because a computer is involved, you eat enough and everything starts to taste the same.” I stalked even as I moved around the little kitchen, “The key Shepard, is to get the ingredients and cook them, the randomization of the procedure due to shifting heat, pan, oil, sauces and a multitude of other factors. No two steaks will ever taste or be the same.”
“Huh, never thought about that,” Shepard muttered, then turned to look at my drones buzzing around like busy little bees. “So what made you leave the migrant fleet?”
With a grimace, I whipped the mashed potatoes, thought about what I wanted to say, then answered her. “We are slowly dying, but not only that, my people seem to have stopped trying to solve the great problems that affect us and are more concerned about getting our old home-world back.”
Shepard grimaced and let silence fall between us as I cooked, “So how did you end up on Shanxi?”
I shrugged my shoulders then plated the food, “I needed a place that wasn’t ruled by Citadel laws, or get attacked by pirates.” With a sigh, I leaned back a little, “I’m a Quarian that's far smarter than more than half the galaxy, and that alone is an issue when everyone wants to lord themselves over me. I wouldn't be wanted anywhere run by the other species, plus humanity wasn’t tainted yet by the citadel and their bullshit.”
At my statement, Shepard grimaced with a shrug of her shoulders, I passed a plate over to her before walking over and getting the fabricated utensil. I gave Shepard a fork and knife along with a cup. Between us I placed a nice light blue Klingon blood wine aged perfectly because, of course, all those points in chemistry and Star Trek technology would allow me to enjoy some of the finer things in life. Also, with no Klingon empire to breathe down my neck, I could do whatever I wanted with replicator patterns. Humming a tune, I took a sip of my Klingon blood wine, then took a moment to enjoy and savor a taste completely alien to my taste buds. Things mellowed out after that as we both ate in silence with a little talk here and there. Before I knew it, a shower was constructed along with a set of clean clothes, perimeter sensors and a few other things before it was time to call it a night.
Well, that was when things got really interesting, Jane helped me put a few of the items into the recycler, then helped with setting up a new cot. I didn’t even ask for clarification because it was clear that someone higher up had asked her to keep an eye on me. One of the only reasons why I was even being cordial was because her omni-tool wasn’t on scan everything mode and she was very easy on the eyes. We got her cot down and some semi-sleeping gear type stuff and ohh my gosh. We both fell and landed in the bed, who could have thunk it. Shirts flew, then pants and undies before the very hot redhead pulled a judo move and got on top. This was the moment I realized that I would need to really get some gene mods because I was still the same size from before I crossed over. Now, that would not do, I was already seven feet and I needed a heavy club between my legs that matched, but those thoughts butterflied away as Jane sank down my shaft. Shepard rode me hard and I can’t lie and say that I wasn’t glad about making sure that the cots were also on the plus side while being sturdy. Shepard shuddered through an orgasm on top of me and I used her moment of weakness to capitalize as I flipped us over and placed one leg behind my ear and the other by her head.
Each of my thrusts were powerful, each one shook the cot and with every stroke I took Shepard's breath away. None of my mods specialized in sexual encounters but the endurance gene mod was really paying out in dividends right now. With a bestial grunt, I slammed all the way into Shepard and released my seed deep within her womb, hot jets of spunk coating her walls with my baby batter. Shepard fired on all cylinders as if that was her own cue to orgasm, her nails digging into my forearms and back. Slightly out of breath, I fell onto the cot right next to Jane as I forced my breathing to calm down. The sex was quick and hard and I knew that it only was to reinforce the fact that yes, we were both still very much alive.
The both of us laid there for a time just enjoying the warmth of each other's body as we laid tangled within the sheets. We both stayed like this for a bit before deciding that enough was enough and a shower was needed along with a snack. With a simple mental nudge, I sent my personal replicator to create bathroom items for the two of us.
Waking up with another five points banked, I ignored my charges to peer at my bed companion. Long red hair on a very fit and athletic frame muttered something in her sleep. She shifted around a little before the hand that was across my waist pulled her in closer. The moment that I shifted for a more comfortable position, Shepard's eyes snapped open instantly. Raising a brow at her, I smirked even as I finished my reposition and settled back down.
Shepard turned around to see what I was looking at since that was the reason why I shifted positions in the first place. With her back against my chest, Jane froze and I could tell that she was clearly stunned at the site before us. When I had recycled the beds and replicated something a lot later to fit two people, I had created a few force field projectors to partition off the area and kept things nice and homie. Even the floor was made up of a force field straight from the Halo Forerunners and kept us from walking on the ground with bare feet. Anyway, I had turned the force-field surrounding the bed opaque allowing one to look through and right to the other side.
Well, on the other side of this force-field was the docking bay and hovering over the open space of the dock was the skeleton of my ship. Around the bare bones of the ship were different drones buzzing around like busy little worker bees. As I went over the things that had happened overnight, I sent a thanks to Ent since the little ghost had taken up the slack for me when I fucked off and did human things. It was an amazing sight to witness and I could also notice the mounting points for the engines that were going to be installed today. Not only was I installing sublight engines, but also a hyper drive that could take me from one side of the galaxy to the other in just one week of travel. That alone would cut down my travel time by days in this universe since everything needed mass effect relays to get around with basic FTL. The other thing that was going to get installed with the hyper-drives was a wormhole drive system straight from the Stargate Atlantis schematics. This would take me from traveling a week to get from one side of the galaxy to the other in less than a few minutes. Hell, if I played my cards right, I could hard link this to a working Stargate once I got my naquadah reserves up and selected a class M planet.
Along the side of the hull would be four torpedo tubes, two on each side for the proton torpedoes which came from my Star Trek technology kit. Up front would be twin sets of very modified and upgraded GAU-8 Avengers. Yeah, I tracked down the A10 in this world because I couldn’t not have the infamous BRRRT on my side because even if I was a super alien now, America FUCK YEAH!!! And to top that all off, my GAU-8 was getting the anti-proton weapons module because I was going to make sure that I punched way above my weight class. The other reason was fuck the Reapers and those damn mass effect weapons.
The bridge carried the most powerful sensors ever created since I was going with a hybridization of both Star Trek and Stargate Alteran sensors. When everything was said and done, I would be able to view at least the surrounding sectors, and not just my current solar systems.
BEEP!!
BEEP!!
That drew both Jane and I out of bed and I was forced out of bed to go pick up one of the tablets that connected to the main sensors sitting next to the generator and pointed directly upwards. Looking over the data worried me with what I found. Those damn STG assholes had decided to FTL out of the system. I was not happy about that development at all, because this could only mean they were up to something. Yeah, it was time to get off my ass because shit was going to hit the fan a lot sooner than later.
Sending Jane a copy of the information, I went to get my pants and got ready to tackle the day. Jane was up within seconds of viewing the data and we both got a cup of coffee and got to work. Funny enough, the clock was still reading an early five in the morning.
[63 hours later…]
25 charges
Everyone was stunned as they looked at my baby, the final completion of some crazy mad science, engineering and my crazy brain case being added to the pile. For those in the know, the ship was sleek, fast and deadly with a throaty rumble of the plasma drives. For those that didn’t know, my ship was shaped like a bird of prey and made sounds like the old human engines. My ship would hit like a dreadnought but moved like a fighter and there was none like it in the entire universe. Pushing distractions out of my mind, I walked over to one of the more important molecular forges that was combined with a replicator and a fabricator. I had to take my time and be careful as I pulled the push cart out of the housing and smiled at the 3 football sized crystal structures that were sitting inside of stabilizers.
“What are those,” Jane Shepard asked as she hovered over my shoulder.Turning around, I gave her a throaty chuckle,
“This is called a ZPM and it's going to elevate my tech.” Shepard blinked at me then looked at the three ZPM power modules.
“Okay, I’ll bite, how and what makes a ZPM?”
Sending her a sly smirk, I started to talk while the clear transpara-steel windows got installed and sealed into place. “I made the ZPM by using Red matter to spark a chain reaction that creates an artificial subspace pocket. That pocket was then compressed with heavy gravitational forces via Mass Effect fields. This causes the subspace to generate energy from the compression effect which is harnessed by the casing until the artificial subspace reaches entropy. And depending on the power draw, the ZPM could last anywhere between ten thousand to a hundred thousand years.”
That was all she was going to get out of me and I sure as hell wasn’t going to touch on the crystal based tech that I got from Stargate Alteran tech base. With a chuckle, I gave Jane a few more run downs of the ship, then things took a sharp turn as the alarms started blaring.
Jane looked at me, but I was already moving towards the sensor suite, I waved a hand over the device and activated the hologram for the both of us to look at. The hologram flared to life, the colors sharp as any super advanced OLED screens you could find out in the world. With a rotation of the hand, the hologram zoomed out and gave us a wider view of the solar system. Near the edge were three red blinking lights and from the rundown, two were STG and the odd one was an aid ship. It looks like the bastards are back and they were going to use the cover of aid to sneak in, it was time to get out of dodge.
“Speak to me Turok, what am I seeing,” Jane called the look on her face hard and focused.
With a grimace, I sent a message to Ent across my implant while turning towards Shepard with a answer, “Classic STG insertion, they are coming under pretenses of providing aid. That ship in the middle is the aid vessel which can't be turned away without raising suspicions. And you already know why they sent two ships instead of one for escort.”
Shepard grimaced and started her omni-tool and got to work. I on the other hand turned to Ent and found that there was only twenty minutes left before the Milano was ready. Coming to a decision, I turned and started to bark my commands. For a start, I had Ent bump the final parts of setting up the cabins and mess hall and put the time into completing the cargo-hold. I could just sleep inside of the med-bay while I get my new gene-mods installed. With my orders given, the drones buzzed to life and went to do my bidding, I ran around the docking bay and deactivated all of the fabricators and molecular forges that were no longer needed. I was moving like it was a fire sale on black Friday and everything had to go, go go!
The ramp of my ship was down and I was hustling everything into the open cargo hold. Sometimes I didn’t even run it over to the ship. Instead, I would hit the miniaturization button and watch as the machine ejected the power cable and then folded over onto the ship by itself. Funny thing is, when I got the perk, I instantly thought about Dragon Ball Z and the capsule corporation. Hell, I just might put some charges into that later but now was not the time. Staring at the last torpedo tube replicator being created, I couldn’t help but tap my foot in impatience even as the clock ticked down and things got closer and closer. The Commander was doing his job and delaying them from landing right now, but that would not last long because I knew that he needed the aid for his people.
Some knew that I fought on the front lines, but the majority of them thought that I was just a larger human in armor. I didn't give out that I was Quarian because combat didn’t need me to give out my deets all over the place. Once the replicator system was finished along with the multi-arm module, I swiftly pulled it out of the mass effect fields and rushed it up the cargo ramp. Running back down, I checked my omni-tool and found that two of the Salarian vessels were already approaching planet side while one stayed in space.
These frog faced mother fuckers were going to try and pincer maneuver me, but jokes on them, I have superior Stargate tech base sublight engines. No way in hell were they going to be able to catch me when I do a runner.
Heading back down the ramp, I went over to the last replicator forge combo, I pulled the power cable before hitting the miniaturization switch so the massive machine could fold inwards onto itself. I didn’t even wait for it to finish folding as I ran the power cable and the generators into the ship. Once I came back out for my final replicator, I found Shepard in her armor with that steel glint in her eyes, damn she looked sexy.
“They are meeting with the governor and for me,” Shepard started, but I had to stop her. Then ran back into the ship and grabbed something that I had worked on the other day and then ran back out and found her by the docking bay control panel. Running over, I gave her a white and black Ace of Spades to match my red and black.
“You’re giving me an energy weapon?” Jane asked, stunned at my little parting gift.
A roguish smirk on my lips, I flipped the weapon around in my hand and offered her the grip, “Biometrically locked to your DNA only, plus black boxed to hell and back. No one will ever be able to get the secrets of this without my express permission.”
“What about maintenance?” Jane asked even though she was trying to hide the excitement in her voice.
“Easy,” I said before flicking over the pistol's operations and its cleaning while explaining a lot more. For this Ace of Spade and my own, I had included a very advanced cryogenic technology so she could even shoot ice spikes along with anti-protons. This more upgraded version could fire a hundred shots easily before it needed to cool down and even that only took five seconds tops.
The omni-tool on my wrist beeped and when I checked it, I found that the STG was scanning the planet from orbit, well shit. Before I could process and pick my next action, Jane pulled me in, kissed me hard, then pushed me towards the Milano. Smiling at her, I turned around my face shifting into a grim line, it was time.
Walking up the ramp to the Milano, Ent came out and we started to go over the procedures.

Check, check and check…
Hyperdrives…
Check…
Wormhole generator…
Check three times…
Now, that's what I wanted to hear, my hand flew across the controls even as Ent flew over to a little cradle and planted himself. The docking bay doors opened and that was all that I needed. Pushing both controls forwards, we went nowhere.
My coms from the omni-tool chirped in Jane's voice, “Whats going on up there?”
Clenching my teeth, while looking around, I ground out a swift, "I don’t know." Then I was saved by the little glorious bundle of light.
“Parking brakes, Guardian.” Ent chirped from his little cradle. Turning to my lower right, I noticed the E-brake stick still pulled up and felt embarrassed over the fact. With a tch on my lips, I put the E-brake down and then booked it out of the docking bay like a bat out of hell.
I flew hard and fast even if I was barely even using one percent of the engine's full power. Some ass hat in the system control flagged us for speed inside of a planetary atmosphere, but I was already rolling over and dropping low into the canyons. Following that for a few miles, I then angled upwards and broke atmo within seconds, the radar showed the STG ship rotating to intercept, but the joke was on them.
Since I couldn’t kill them inside of System Alliance space without drawing trouble, I pushed the throttle forward. The Milano bumped upwards to five percent and the distance between the two ships only expanded more and more. Keeping the distance, I waited until I was out of the System Alliance sensor range before activating the Romulan cloak. The STG ship kept flying even as I changed trajectory and prepped the hyper-drives. With a snort, I watched as the STG ship floundered around as my cloak kept me hidden.
With a shake of the head, I had Ent double check the coordinates for Omega against what the colony had along with general astro maps. Once Ent brought back a confirmation, I punched it. Artificial Eezo was still eezo and would sell the same. This meant that all credit chits were the same and I already knew who exactly to sell a crate of eezo to so I could get my hands on some easy credit chits.
Omega awaits, and if the STG showed up, I wouldn’t mind looting their corpses. Every little bit counts towards the prosperity of my people.
