 Rae POV

"Rae I think it's time we had our duel. The rate things are going We need a united front for the vampires with a single leader."

Those are the words I feared hearing the most. It looks like the day I had dreaded had for so long had finally come.

"So where are we going to be duelling?"

" I think south most of the kingdom and the closest part of the boundary that borders the forest of monsters will do nicely. It is the best place for us to duel. We can go all out since they are close to no inhabitants there. At most what you could get to see is a high-class monster and with the waves, we'll produce, I doubt there is a monster that will target us."

"Okay, so will we be going alone?"

"Not really, a duel must be carried in front of members of the clan so that everyone gets to acknowledge the authenticity of the duel and that the new queen is coronated for all to see."

"Oh, I see. So the other vampires are coming along."

"Yeah. We'll be heading out in the morning."

"Okay."

After the small chat, we each went to our respective rooms. The night air seemed still and yet not a wink of sleep was to be found. The anxiety that had gripped my heart was more than I could bear. I  started strategizing how well I could exploit the weaknesses I had observed from her and how best I would defend mine. From what I had observed in training, Trina seemed to have no real weakness apart from light magic and her delayed activation time on spells since she likes performing chants. Her strength was in her speed, strength, agility and stealthiness. She truly was a beast. Looking at anyway I already knew that she would close the distance before I could even do anything. After that, it will only be a matter of time before I lose. So seeing that I would most likely be fighting defensively and her offensively getting a shield would be the greatest choice. The only problem is I am slower than her and shields are very bulky to walk with so I won't be able to do much fighting. Then come the Idea, what if I had a shield made of magic, sort of like a barrier that prevents penetration by matter, but how was I supposed to do this. Maybe if I think of mana as pure energy then it is possible to erect a sort of force field around my vicinity. Force fields are basically fields of energy that repel matter. "Liza is it possible to create a force field using mana."

[ Yes it is theoretically plausible but it would require you to have a continuous stream of magicules being pumped out at a stable rate and to maintain a certain amount of concentrated magicules around you without dispersing the magic out of the area or using it up. If there is any sort of disturbance to the equilibrium of the magicule concentration then the force field would collapse."

So basically I can only use a barrier when am not using any magic.

"What about movement. Will my movement be a determent to the barrier?"

[ Any speed above the rate of diffusion will cause the barrier to collapse.]

Just great it looks like my movement will be greatly reduced during the usage of the barrier.

Well, let's put our theories to the test.

The first four times I was unable to make a stable barrier around my whole body, so I decided to start with a much smaller area that was around my hands. The smaller scale barrier was successful. It felt like I was wearing boxing gloves. I decided to gradually scale it up and after several more tries, I was able to create a stable barrier. I came to find out that my body could go through the barrier but any other physical matter could not. There were still many flaws with the barrier but I couldn't address them that night since I didn't have time.

After a whole lot of experimenting I came to see the maximum speed I could move my body without interfering with the barrier.  It was pretty slow but now I knew what I was working with. I wish I could increase the rate of diffusion but I was afraid I would make a mana storm in the process.

Feeling exhausted I fell asleep.

Early in the morning, Trina rushed to my room waking me up with a very loud knock. Without even having breakfast we left. She then suggests the most ridiculous form of travelling. We were to run up to the point where the duel was to take place without any meals or luggage. The meals were to be hunted on the way and to be prepared and eaten before the duel. Was she serious?

Trina's POV

The duel is finally going to happen. The vampires and I are to run up to the point where are to duel which is about 100000 human strides or 22000 horse strides (80km). For normal humans walking the journey can take up to two to four days, for horses it could take a half to a full day. But I believe we could be there in 2 to 3 hours. Using vampiric speed I could be there in between a quarter and half an hour but the others aren't as fast as I am and don't have that much stamina so will be there in 2 to 3 hours. They look angry with me and I understand, but they should also understand we can't put any people in danger. This is also good training for them. After an hour of running, we started looking for food. We had covered about 45000 human strides (36 km). We caught some deers which were to be our lunch.

After one and half more hours we had arrived.

We ate our lunch, had some water and then the duel was to begin.

"Before the duel, we have to do a blood ritual spell. This spell will ensure that the winner of the duel would become the Queen and the loser would lose all claim to the throne."

"Okay, so what are we supposed to do before we begin?"

"First blood is to be drawn from both participants of the duel. A spell inscribed by the first vampire is to be performed then the blood from each is mixed and applied to all parties involved. After that, a pledge is said by each and then the duel begins"

After the ritual, the duel began. All the other vampires went further away from us so as not to interfere with our duel and to be outside the area of effect.

We each took a stance. I was of course rooting for Rae even if I had to fight with my all. I started with a head-on attack using my speed as an advantage. while I was moving towards her I cast the shadow movement spell since casting it would leave me defenceless. I made a faint attack on her chest and immediately used shadow movement to appear behind her. When I appeared my kick was headed straight for her back but before my kick could connect a blast of wind pushed me away. Together with the force of the wind, I used a tree as a way to change the flow of the momentum throwing it all back at her. She noticed it and nearly missed the devastating blow. Using shadow movement I appeared behind her not giving her time to recover her balance. I then gave her a sweep to make her fall to the ground. She nearly fell only saving herself using wind magic. She landed on her two feet. It looked like she was preparing some kind of new attack. I ran straight towards her since it looked like she was defenceless for a moment. On attacking her chest the air around it seemed to have hardened a little but my kick still connected with her chest. She flew straight to a tree breaking some of her bones. Before she could stand up I attacked her, but before I could get a hit, a ray of light to be shone at my eye blinding me and mildly hurting my face. During the state of blindness, I felt her attacking me with a lot of earth made projectiles. I ran searching for cover from the shoot but I could barely make anything out from my blurry vision. Out of nowhere a very powerful punch made contact with my face. As I flew my vision came back and I was able to recollect myself. I casted shadow movement again and this time decided to make consecutive attacks on her. It was really had to do this since she was smaller than me but I tried. Most of my attacks connected but her body seemed to get harder and harder the more I tried to attack it. It was time I made use of fire magic. I kept on moving to by time cast the spell. The spell was complete I razed the surrounding area and enclosed her in a circle of flames. I used one of my lethal skills on her legs and arms intending to completely chop them off but I was only able to break some bones. She lost her footing and fell writhing in pain. When I was about to give her the final blow a lot of mana started to converge around her. Was she performing a new spell? No, she wasn't, She was conjuring a mana storm. The air seemed to feel electric usually like when there is a Thunderstorm . My hair and hers stood up. The level of mana she was gathering and releasing was abnormal. The amount of wind coming out of her was so powerful it carried me up and uprooted most of the trees around. The ground we were being carried off underneath started to crumble

"Rae!!Rae!!!! Stop you are going to affect the surrounding area.

She looked like she was in a sort of trance. Thunderous clouds started to form around us. I didn't like where this was going. A lot of lightning started to strike, If I didn't do something to stop her she would lay waste to the area. I decided to use earth magic. I am usually not good with earth magic but I had to try. I did a combined spell of fire and earth launching a small rock straight at her before I could see the result, my vision went black.
