“Whew!” Silvia and Amich let out a sigh of relief as the invisibility spell dissipated. They emerged from behind the dumpster, panting heavily. They were on high alert, ready to flee at a moment's notice.
Just as the siblings were about to make a break for it, they heard a loud crash followed by the sound of shattering glass. They turned to see a black cat with piercing golden eyes perched atop a nearby trash bin. It seemed to be observing them with a mysterious and almost knowing gaze, its tail twitching with anticipation. As they watched in surprise, the cat gracefully jumped down from its perch and sauntered over to them, rubbing itself against Silvia's leg in a playful manner.
"It's just a cat," Silvia said with a relieved sigh. She had been on edge since their narrow escape from the cop. The sudden appearance of the mysterious feline had startled her. “It’s cute.”
"I'm not so sure," Amich replied, eyeing the cat warily. Despite its friendly demeanour, he couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to this animal than met the eye.
"Come on, Amich," Silvia urged, trying to reassure her younger brother. "It's just a stray. It probably just wants some food or attention."
Amich wasn't convinced. He tried to shoo the cat away, but it only seemed to make it more determined to stay by their side. As he struggled to fend off the persistent feline, Amich suddenly felt a growling in his stomach. He was famished; all he could think about was finding something to eat.
"Sister, I'm starving," he complained, abandoning his efforts to chase off the cat. "Can't we just find someplace to get food and get out of here?"
Silvia hesitated, still wary of the cat and the danger that seemed to be lurking around every corner. However, as she looked at Amich's pleading face, she couldn't deny him any longer.
"Alright," she relented. "But we have to be careful. We can't let our guard down for a second."
"Hmm...?" Silvia looked around for the cat but it seemed to disappear as suddenly as it had appeared. “That’s strange.”
Just as the siblings were preparing to leave the alley, a door suddenly swung open, revealing a small restaurant with a sign above the entrance reading "The Rusty Spoon."
A young man emerged with a garbage bag in hand. He was complaining to himself about having to take out the trash yet again. He was tall and handsome, with a rugged bad boy appeal. Despite his rough exterior, his eyes held a hint of kindness that was not lost on Silvia and Amich.
On his way to the dumpster, he noticed the siblings huddled in the corner, their bare feet and ragged clothes out of place in the bustling town. He was slightly startled, but quickly recovered and approached them with a friendly smile. "Hello, I didn't see you there," he said, his eyes flicking briefly to Amich, who was hiding behind Silvia.
Silvia hesitated, unsure whether to trust this stranger, but eventually introduced herself and her brother. "We don't want any trouble. We'll be going now," she said, trying to make a quick exit. But as they turned to leave, Jed heard the sound of Amich's stomach growling loudly. He delayed for a moment before calling them back.
"Are you hungry?" he asked, a soft look in his eyes. Jed had always had a soft spot for starving people, especially kids. Without waiting for a response, he hurried back into the restaurant, emerging a few moments later with a small bag of food. "Here you go," he said, offering it to the siblings.
Silvia and Amich looked at each other, unsure of what to do. They had learned to be wary of strangers, but Jed seemed genuinely kind. In the end, they decided to take a chance. They sat down on the back step to eat the food he had brought them.

Jed didn't ask the siblings much about themselves as they ate, sensing that whatever they were going through was rough. He watched with a mixture of amusement and concern as Amich devoured the food with vicious gusto, barely taking the time to chew before swallowing. The food itself was simple, just a few sandwiches and some chips, but to the starving siblings, it was a feast.
"Hm?" Jed noticed something strange about Amich, aside from his animalistic way of eating, all of his teeth were silver. "Is that why he wears that mask, to hide his teeth?" Jed understood that many people would find it weird so he didn't mention it.
"Thanks for the food," Silvia told Jed after she finished eating, a genuine look of gratitude on her face.
“It’s no big deal.” Jed waved off her thanks, a modest look on his face.
“That was delicious.” Amich let out a loud burp that echoed in the back alley. The siblings laughed together, the sound almost foreign to their ears.
“We appreciate your kindness, but we should be going now.” Silvia was preparing to leave.
Curious, Jed asked, "Do you have a place to stay?" he had a look of concern on his face. "I have a trailer you guys can crash in for the night if you want." He waited for their reply.
“No thanks.” Silvia thanked Jed for his offer, but refused, not wanting to impose on him any further. "We'll be going now," she said, gathering her things. "Thank you again for the food."
About to leave, Jed called out to them. "Wait here a sec," he disappeared back into the restaurant. When he emerged, he was holding 2 pairs of shoes. "I figured you guys could use these," he said, holding them out to the siblings, but when he looked up, they were already gone. A worried look crossed his face as he realized he had lost track of them. “Their gone.”
After sneaking out of the alley, Silvia and Amich made their way towards the abandoned structure at the edge of town while discussing Jed's behaviour and the kindness he had shown them.
"I can't believe he just gave us all that food," Amich was still marvelling at the taste. "It was very delicious." He smiled and reflected on events earlier. "That lady back at the store had an awful personality, unlike Jed. He was cool. People in the 21st century aren't all bad, right sister?"
Silvia smiled at her brother, a glint of laughter in her eyes. "I know, Amich. It's nice to see some kindness in this world. But we have to stay out of sight, remember? We don't want to cause any more fuss in this town."
“I understand.”
