Was it due to the discomfort he felt? Or was it his refusal to hold back? Or was it to impress? Or was it…

In truth, it was a combination of things. Still, while the exact reason for his behaviour wasn’t one-sided, the result most certainly was.

Rei went full tilt out the gate. As soon as the match kicked off, he rushed at his opponents with the vigour of a bull seeing red and the skill of an untouchable matador.

The fighters were completely stumped by the sudden blitz. He gave them no time to enter their ideal formation, nor did he pull his punches. This behaviour was totally opposite to what they had expected and planned for, and this unpreparedness cost them dearly.

Their initial ‘sluggishness’ allowed Rei to dispatch one of them not even a second into the match. This created a momentary panic, which Rei took full advantage of. With his first move putting them on the back foot, he used his subsequent moves to keep them there.

Using a boxing-gunslinger style fusion, his punches and Psi projectiles ravaged the group. Ten seconds into the match and his opponents were reduced by half, and from the looks of it, the remaining five would fall in an even quicker time frame.

But this wasn’t meant to be; a certain someone’s backseating efforts had prevented this reality. At Ralf’s badgering, Rei lifted his foot off the peddle - or rather the necks of his opponents.

Allowed some breathing room, the remaining five grasped at it. After a few seconds to mentally adjust, the group began executing the techniques and tactics they had spent a week practising.

It was…something, but they clearly impressed the audience more than Rei.

Making good on the ‘minute’ promise to Ralf, he then moved to bring the match to a close.

And now, only one remained.

Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!

‘Fuck, he’s so damn fast, I can barely follow him. Right left up right…’

In the centre of the ring, Alexa flickered about sporadically. Her senses were on full alert as they tried to track the speedy Rei as he traced an incomprehensible shape through the air.

‘...left right aah! Come on, focus. Don’t give up, Alexa. You can still turn it around- no, you have to. That reward, I must have it. That’s ten years’ worth of paychecks!’

Remembering the White Hawk’s internal reward for the person who manages to bring down Ralf, the female soldier’s fighting spirit flared up and her concentration was pushed to its limits.

In this rare state, her mind’s eye captured Rei’s trajectory clearly.

‘Now!’

Eyes suddenly brightening, she darted backwards.

Boom!

True to her inexplicable feeling, Rei had made his descent. Landing with a colossal momentum, the ground exploded upwards and outwards to form an instant sand cloud. It rushed toward Alexa. The female fighter didn’t retreat at its approach but instead darted in.

Her opponent had just executed a big move and she was looking to take advantage of the recoil period. With Rei as her opponent, she knew this window was brief, and thus, she fired off at top speed.

Her eyes flashed with greed’s dazzling glint as she noted the blue humanoid’s ‘sluggish’ motions up ahead. Finalising her actions in her mind, she materialised her Psi rapier in her right hand and thrust its tip towards her target’s chest.

But…

As the blade’s tip was inches away from his chest, a foreboding feeling suddenly struck her heart, and then, a moment later, as the sword plunged into her target’s chest, realisation finally set in.

With it, a sudden urgency overcame her and moving at desperate speed, she had Psi rushed to her left side.

‘Da-’

Bam!

Struck hard, Alexa’s figure was blown out of the sand cloud at a rate of knots. Moving horizontally, she spun like a rag doll, with her head and body colliding harshly against the ring’s sandy floor, as though a skipped stone. Out of it for a few moments, the female fighter grit her teeth and used all her might to prevent another flip.

But, at the moment she did, an unwelcome surprise closed in. Rei didn’t give her a moment to catch herself. He swooped in and thrust his Psi Drill into her chest. Alexa raised her defences admirably, but it wasn’t enough. With a pushing motion, Rei drove her back and slammed her back-first into the nearby wall, turning her red in the process.

Downing his final foe, Rei didn’t linger a moment longer. He pulled back and turned away, not sparing another glance for his opponent. This level of indifference wasn’t reciprocated by Alexa though. Back to the wall, she looked at his retreating form with stars in her eyes.

‘He’s so cool… even cooler than Ralf. That sequence, he must have planned that out, it was so smooth, and so quick. Ah, he got me good.’

Her mind drifted back a few seconds as she replayed her opponent’s cunning trick.

To start, Rei’s miss had been intentional. Observing her erratic movements from above, he knew that hitting her would be difficult, so instead of continuing to accelerate, he slowed down to a manageable speed. Choosing the right moment, he descended.

His landing seemed to carry more force than it did, thanks to the dirt explosion he purposely created. This was meant to momentarily obscure Alexa’s Psi Scan as well as invite her in.

Luckily for him, she took the bait, and even luckier, her attack was one of this tactic’s acceptable attack patterns.

After landing, Rei slipped out of back his ‘blue shell’, leaving a Psi Clone in his place. Then from a low stance, immediately began the first step of Asura Punch.

After doing a final confirmation on his opponent’s trajectory, Rei then had his Psi join up to complete the final half of the technique and bam! Alexa had done well to detect his true whereabouts at the last moment, but in her panic, she couldn’t completely counter it.

And from there, her end was inevitable.

‘He’s really something,’ she thought in praise. However, this feeling was short-lived as she was reminded of the match’s result. ‘My reward money noooooooo…’

While her mood was souring, the crowd’s mood was soaring. Cheers erupted in the venue.

[What an amazing performance!] Vostel’s voice boomed. [Such dominance, such efficiency, suck skill. There was room to doubt beforehand, but none now, Ralf Fawkes isn’t the only one who’s got the moves. The ‘Transmigrator’, Rei Fawkes, previously known as the black personality has shown his stuff here tonight.]

“Rei!”

“Rei!”

“Rei!”

From a single voice, it spread, and before long, the crowd was chanting his name.

Rei’s eyes twitched in response.

[[Ahaha, look at that, I’m jealous,]] Ralf said with a smitten look on his face.

Rei’s brows furrowed. [[If you want to be in my shoes, please hop in…no really.]]

[[No no no, see it through to the end.]]

Rei mentally sighed. Stopping at the centre of the ring, he shut his eyes and waited for Vostel to finish.

[Honestly, I’m baffled. Many questions have popped up in my mind. Who is stronger, Rei or Ralf? What does Transmigrator mean? And, since Rei is out, will Silver, the third personality also make an appearance in the future? When will these questions be answered…or will they be answered at all, only time will tell. And hopefully soon, I’m burning up. I’m sure, many can relate.]

At the words, many in the crowd began directing pleading gazes toward Rei in hopes that he somehow senses their intent and answers their desires.

[One thrilling match down, seven more to go. I don’t know if he - or rather they will manage to do it, but what I do know is that we’re in for a wild ride so everyone better buckle up. Will this Challenger Series be completed? We’ll just have to wait and see. Now over to - oh, one last thing, with Rei Fawkes’ participation, this Challenger Series has been updated to the Silver Path Challenger Series.]

Adding that last part, Vostel returned to his previous intention. [Now over to Rei. Ralf mentioned that there was an exciting announcement coming, please enlighten us.]

The crowd jolted at the words. With how exciting the match was, many had completely forgotten Ralf’s earlier words. Now remembering, their gazes quickly heated up in anticipation.

Cue given, Rei didn’t delay a moment. [The exciting thing Ralf spoke of is a… movie announcement.]

Brows raised at the revelation. It was totally out of left-field, even more than they had expected.

Rei’s eyes opened. [The Silver Path dabbles in all manner of domains. The entertainment industry is the next domain it wishes to enter, and tomorrow, the faction will take its first step by releasing a full-length movie.]

The audience was quiet as they took in his words. It wasn’t that they weren’t excited to see what movie the Silver Path would create, but it would still be a movie at the end of the day. Everyone present had watched a movie before.

Ralf’s description of it being ‘something you’ve seen never before - or rather, something the world hasn’t’ had sent their expectations to the Heavenly Plane, so hearing it was just a movie was a bit underwhelming.

Rei saw this and mentally shrugged. He didn’t push the issue, to him, the result would speak for itself.

He moved to wrap things up. [For those interested, it will be debuting tomorrow evening at Enviso. That is all for me - oh, one last thing, about the question of who’s stronger between Ralf and me, it’s...me.”

This declaration was what he would leave on, as a second later, the chilly aura dissipated and a warm one replaced it.

[Aaand I’m back,] Ralf announced with a cheery smile.

The sudden shift in facial expression and demeanour was jarring for the crowd, especially after their brains were still processing the verity of Rei’s final words.

[That was a pretty exciting match. Not a bad start to the Challenger Series if I do say so myself. Rei sure is something, isn’t he? He’s a bit rough around the edges, but that’s only the surface. At his core, he’s got a heart of gold - no better, one of Silver,] Ralf said with a smirk as he praised his other self.

Nodding at his words, Ralf continued. [Now, about that movie. As Rei said, it’s debuting tomorrow, so don’t miss it. It’s going to be amazing. Mmm, don’t believe me?] He shook his head. [To doubt me is to doubt the next sunrise. Sure, there will come a time when it doesn’t come again, but that’s a day you won’t live to see.]

Ralf let his words simmer in the audience’s minds for a few seconds before continuing.

[It’s a movie, but not just any movie. You’ll understand when you watch it.] Ralf turned on his heel and headed for his gate, which had already been opened. [Okay, that’s all I had to say. Consider tonight as the second example of the Silver Path’s greatness. Stay tuned, many more examples sit on the horizon, just wait for it.]

The crowd watched his every step with intrigue and fascination, not daring to blink lest they miss a single moment of his enigmatic form. No less than fifty thousand souls were entranced by the young man and his other selves.

[Oh, and one last thing.] Ralf paused at his gateway. [A quick correction...I’m the stronger one.]

Ralf delivered these words with a smirk before resuming his stride. Figure disappearing into the stony corridor, he left the crowd baffled then boisterous.
