What followed was what everyone had expected, a cat and mouse game, with Ray being the unfortunate mouse. Chased relentlessly, he desperately dodged the Psi beasts’ monstrous attacks.
But with the Psi beast’s superior speed, large frame and variety of attacks, the dodging margin quickly shrunk until he was forced to parry. Blocking wasn’t an option.
A direct hit need not be mentioned, even anything less than a perfect parry would result in an instant defeat. And even parrying perfectly, Ray’s figure was sent flying off like a rag doll. The disparity in power was just that great.
The Psi beast’s ever-changing limbs powered by several psionics in unison casually tore through the sound barrier. Every motion made by the Psi beast shifted massive amounts of air and dirt.
Walton and the other high-level psionics had their work cut out for them as they prevented the colossal force emissions from leaving the ring’s confines.
Twenty seconds had passed since Chen Fu’s words, twenty seconds of thrashing.
‘You haven’t even managed to land a single attack…and yet you think you can defeat us, ridiculous.
With his anger receding, Chen Fu once again questioned the ridiculousness of the situation.
The Psi beast’s tail flashed with blue light and then in a manner similar to Dragon Tail, but way more powerful, it whipped at Ray. The hypersonic speed and unorthodox trajectory of the whip made for a deadly combination that would best most, but not Ray. Very familiar with both, he dealt with the attack handily. Pushing off the air with his palms, he evaded the air-igniting tail swipe, letting it sail right over him.
Following it, Ray scrunched up his body and cocooned himself in Turtle’s Shell to avoid the blanket-like barrage of Psi projectiles that were shot out in all directions.
Swoosh!
The Psi beast rushed toward him. Its left paw filled with Psi. A moment later, four-metre-long Wolverine-like claws extended out. The Psi beast’s claws flashed down.
Ray, sensing the other paw filling with energy, took a cheeky approach. Breaking out of his cocoon, he quickly straightened his body. Calculating it perfectly, Ray’s sideways figure, narrowly slipped between two blades by mere inches.
Impressive as it was, there was no time to celebrate. Ray immediately shifted backwards, avoiding the right paw’s much cruder smash.
Missing its attack, the Psi beast’s mouth opened and a large spherical projectile blasted out; it maintained this form for only a few metres before breaking apart into hundreds of smaller Psi projectiles.
The expanding cone rushed at Ray but he was one step faster. Turning tail, he dashed off. Following the walls of the ring, he sped himself up via repeated Flickers.
Chen Fu, responsible for perception and direction, tracked his trajectory with ease. Sending his commands through the high-speed telepathic network, the Psi beast moved to intercept.
The Psi beast leapt into an armadillo-like curl and shot towards the ring’s wall as a bus-sized cannonball.
*Boom*
Walton and the others’ Psi barrier was heavily cracked in the aftermath.
Ray was spared this devastation. Anticipating the attack, he deployed his Psi Parachute while at the same time slowing himself down with force absorbing Psi. Momentum slashed at, he escaped the wrecking ball’s path but couldn’t escape its touch. Carried by inertia, his boots landed on the hardened exterior.
With the thickness present, Ray didn’t even bother to throw a regular attack. Dragon Tail would at best dent the structure, nothing more. He kicked off the object to gain some distance.
As he did, the Psi beast’s tail unfurled and whipped at his airborne form. Ray shifted slightly while conjuring his most powerful shield.
Bam!
The tail barely clipped his angled shield, still, Ray was sent flying off helplessly. His figure skidded along the uneven mounds of sand before finally stopping at the opposite wall.
‘How embarrassing,’ Ray thought as he got to his feet. Using his telekinesis, he swept his form clean. However, even in the aftermath, he still looked worse for wear.
The mismatched coat which had remained pristine throughout all the matches was now a third shorter than it originally was, losing both tails. Unable to bear the crime against fashion any longer, he took it off and tossed it aside.
[[My sweets nooooo!]]
Ray’s face twisted up at the annoyance his other self was being. Not bothering to shush him this time, he simply snapped the Mental Link.
‘Pressure, expectation, desperation, I’m feeling it all, yet, my soul remains stagnant. Looks like this isn’t the trigger either. Or maybe, I just need to feel it even more strongly? No, any more than this, and I’ll be defeated. Let’s end this already.’
Deciding on this, he strode towards the Psi beast, which had come to a halt.
[Ray Fawkes,] Chen Fu spoke up once again. At the same time, he had the Psi beast orientate itself to face Ray. [This is the last opportunity we’ll give you. Become Silver, or fall before our might.] As he voiced, the Psi beast mimicked Ray and on four legs, strode towards the centre.
The crowd was dead silent. They observed the two monsters approaching each other with bated breath.
[Fall before our might, huh.]
Repeating the other’s words, Ray couldn’t help but shake his head. As he did, his face was coloured with light smears of derision and heavy smears of pity at the foolishness he was witnessing. Chen Fu and his fellow soldiers caught this and flared up with anger.

[It is one thing for the audience to be fooled, but for the actors to be fooled as well…ridiculous. Since you have trouble separating the play from reality, I’ll make it clear which one is which.] Still walking forward, Ray raised his right fist.
The crowd’s attention locked onto the gloved hand; Psi converged around it and the fist began steaming with blue vapour.
[I’ll end it in just one punch. Are you ready?]
Chen Fu squinted as his earlier question was returned his way. He didn’t answer immediately, but instead traded words with his group.
[He’s bluffing, keep calm. Once the attack lands, we’ll stop holding back and finish this match.]
[Yes sir.]
Hearing nine similar responses, the middle-aged soldier refocused on Ray, now only ten metres away.
[Go ahead.]
Getting the go-ahead, Ray leapt high. All observers had their minds blank at the action, for it was abnormally ‘slow’. So slow that even those in the audience with unenhanced vision could capture his parabola trajectory with ease.
Chen Fu and the others were similarly stunned at the sluggishness. Having all the time in the world, they calculated his landing to be above the upper torso region and thickened the Psi armour by several layers. While doing this, dozens of ropes burst out from the Psi beast’s side, front and back. Rushing out, they moved to form a cage to entrap Ray.
Ray noted the tactic but didn’t care either way. He focused on orientating his body properly. Fist drawn back, his straightened figure descended. At the last moment, he sped himself up a bit and punched.
Then…
*Shatter*
To the absolute shock of all observing, Ray’s figure punched straight through the wall of hardened Psi. Entering the internal chamber, he was greeted by six blank faces. Their mental cogs were frozen in place at the impossibility they were currently experiencing.
Ray didn’t allow this moment of weakness to pass by unpunished. He fired out an omnidirectional projectile barrage. Practically defenceless, the six inside were instantly dyed red. The Psi beast came apart at their elimination.
The four remaining soldiers scattered in the aftermath, mental cogs still rotating sluggishly. Ray moved on them with mechanical efficiency. With the technique already revealed, he didn’t care to play coy. He spammed it repeatedly and eliminated the soldiers one after the other in quick succession.
Oscillation Wave! Oscillation Wave! Oscillation Wave! …
‘Ah?!’
Chen Fu mentally exclaimed as Ray suddenly appeared at his front. In a panic, he fired off a punch, but Ray’s afterimage would be its only victim. The man himself avoided it with a forward spin, and as he passed by the other, his hammer first swung around and slammed into Chen Fu’s nape.
The Psi armour coating it was instantly shattered before Oscillation Wave’s might and allowed Ray’s fist to pass through. While weaker than a Psi attack, his physical might was considerable. Should the attack land, Chen Fu wouldn’t be waking up anytime soon. Luckily for him, Walton’s protective Psi saved him from the negative experience.
Seeing Chen Fu, his final opponent turn crimson, Ray removed his hand and exited combat mode.
“This is…reality.”
Ray spoke these words softly and matter-of-factly, yet all who heard them couldn’t help but recoil in shock and awe. Not lingering, the Transmigrator telekinetically retrieved his torn coat and draped it over his shoulder before walking off. He strode to his gate, an air of nonchalance and arrogance befitting a higher being following him every step of the way.
For the next ten seconds, his footsteps would be the only sound to ring out in the venue. The match’s ending sequence and result were just too difficult to understand. By the eleventh second, the crowd abandoned the path of understanding and chose to accept it. When they did, the venue erupted in an ear-shattering roar.
“Holy Raiken!”
“What the fuck was that?”
“What did he do at the end, anyone know?”
“That was a vibration technique wasn’t it, but how?!”
“He actually pulled it off. I knew he could, ahaha, you doubters, I told you he had something up his sleeve. Haha, I’m rich! Again!”
“So he was just playing around all this time, I knew it. With that technique, he could have wiped out the competition anytime. Amazing. He’s more amazing than I thought. Hey, do you think Ralf can do that move as well?”
The stands were boisterous with conversation.
Vostel let the blaze burn for a few more seconds before doing his duty. He announced the match’s result and did his usual closing statement. The fifty thousand souls left vibrating no different than the Oscillation Wave itself - no, even more intense.
They and the remote viewing groups would spread the word about tonight’s happening with a ferocity and potency only a contagious airborne virus could match.
After tonight, the duo’s stories saw a new explosive addition.
