'Aha, to think I'd get to see the day.'
Skye relished in the passing moments. It wasn't often that he got to see this side of his sister. Not far from him, a silent Charlotte sat, hugging her knees, her usual fierceness nowhere to be found and replaced by a bashful crimson.
'You're too adorable, sis,' the air Mimic couldn't help but think as he captured his sister in his blue sights.
After splitting ways with Team Black Eyes, the twins had headed to the library, where Skye got caught up to speed. The twins spent an hour watching/rewatching the duo's videos, and then made their way to a grassy incline as well, this one far away from all others.
The air Mimic hadn't initially questioned Charlotte's request to follow her, thinking she needed to walk off the agitation in the system - he certainly did; the duo's videos left him vibrating with excitement. He also hadn't thought much of her strange silence as she walked either, for the same reason - at least, initially.
As the peculiar air around his sister continued to persist past the two-minute mark, he finally caught on to the fact that something was amiss, that his sister had something important to get off her chest. Skye's forehead crinkled as he pondered what it could be about. He knew his sister well, like the back of his hand - nay, like the front of his hand.
Trailing after her by a few steps, he studied her swaying form and side profile to the best of his ability. Reading her body language, he could tell that she was somewhat troubled but nothing else. He was as confused as he was curious, and so awaited the moment of revelation in silent anticipation.
That moment arrived five minutes later. After settling in their current spot and a long bout of silence, Charlotte admitted to him that she had fallen...ill, having caught a bad case of love-sickness. Following the confession, the Onic Master had remained silent. Atop the grassy hill, her scrunched-up figure rocked back and forth as her emotions and the winds tugged at her.
The revelation had Skye's eyes flicker in surprise - slight surprise. He wasn't at all surprised by his sister's feelings for Ralf. Skye knew the look of a lovestruck maiden well and his sister was just that.
The way she looked at him, the smile that bloomed on her face whenever he was mentioned, her frequent flirtatious behaviour and sexual advances and suggestions; the signs were abundant.
No, even without catching any of these signs, Skye could predict this outcome with almost dead certainty. He knew his sister and knew what type of man she would fall for, and Ralf was just that. He was everything she wanted in a man and more. Yes, man. There was a need to specify the sex.
Charlotte had a weird/harsh double standard when it came to the sexes, and it was all thanks to a certain someone, Micheal Ascania. As mentioned, the Fifth Pillar was Charlotte’s first crush.
She was enamoured by his looks, of course, but more than his Radiant Face, it was the immense power he wielded, the grand status he held, and the larger-than-life aura he exuded that was so attractive to her. He was a special existence, capable of dictating the very course of the world with his will.
A young lovestruck Charlotte had dedicated much of her time fantasising about being his future lover and thinking up ways to whoo him. However, her schemes and ploys went nowhere.
Micheal didn't - and couldn't see her as a lover. The age gap was uncrossable and not to mention, he was already taken by several others. There was no way into his heart or onto his bed. After coming to terms with this fact, her young love slowly faded with time, faded until it was no more. What didn't fade though, was her absurdly high standard for men, which became apparent in her teenage years.
She had several male lovers but none had managed to last more than a month. The feeling of disappointment and dissatisfaction, of wanting more, continued to gnaw at her until she ended things. She didn’t think they were bad - she wouldn't have given them a chance if they were. Rather, all shined in their own way, just not bright enough to dazzle her.
These unreasonable expectations only applied to males. For females, Charlotte's standards were much lower. A sexy figure and a likeable personality were enough to satisfy the Onic Master. With her standards being what they were, Charlotte had pretty much given up on the opposite sex to avoid disappointing herself.
A male lover would essentially have to be equal to or better than Micheal, a man considered the greatest human since Bellus the One King. Knowing these absurd standards, Skye believed that no male would ever enter his sister's eyes, let alone make them sparkle.
'And then brother came along.'
The Transmigrator didn't just clear the bar but flew over it. Charismatic, confident, and capable. A seemingly unique existence who casually did the impossible on a regular basis, and treated fate as a mere suggestion.
He had yet to etch himself on the pages of history and as far as personal power and combat prowess went, he was far behind the likes of Micheal. Still, the aura of specialness he radiated was far more potent, at least this is what Charlotte felt to be the case.
Skye could sense this aura of specialness too and held similar feelings regarding his 'brother'. Knowing his sister's preferences, he kept in mind the possibility of her falling for him, and lo and behold, it happened, not weeks later as he predicted, but now.
So, how did he react to the confession after the initial surprise? Of course, with a smitten/smug smile. He fully supported the relationship between his sister and Ralf.
[From a brother in spirit to a brother-in-law, that would be wonderful, I approve,] he said, breaking the long silence.
The blank look on Charlotte's face came undone at the words and a joyful smile overtook her expression. [So, I can count on your support then?]
[Of course, you can,] Skye said with a soldier’s resolve, crashing his fist into his chest. [Consider me the wind in your sails dear sister. Your ship will never sink nor fall behind.]

[Fall behind?] Charlotte tilted her head.
[Surely you’ve noticed that you’re not the only ship in these waters,] Skye said, glancing skyward and capturing the ocean of blue above.
The three white clouds roaming northward were assigned familiar names, with the northernmost one being dubbed 'Vixen 1' in his mind. He watched the trio's travels across the heavens with hopeful eyes, internally cheering on one in particular.
[Them? Hmm, I can't see them as my competition,] Charlotte said, blinking slowly as images of the two Mimics flashed through her head.[We're ships pushed forward by the same winds and carried by the same current...and I'd like to keep it that way.]
[Me too. I'd hate to see our group fragment over this...or anything.]
[Yeah, that should be avoided at all costs. More than my own ship, I'd rather our friendship stay afloat.]
Skye's chest warmed and a smile emerged on his face. He closed the distance with a few steps and then rubbed the top of her head. A fuzzy silence visited the area and lingered for ten seconds more before Skye moved to break it. He retracted his hand and brought up an obvious concern.
[Sis, what exactly are you going to do? Rival ships or not, reaching your destination will be...difficult. For any other male, you’d just need to wink in their general direction and that would suffice...but with Ralf, it won’t be that easy - no, Ralf isn’t an issue. If it was just him, I'm sure you could wrap him around your finger in no time but...it’s not just Ralf.]
As they arrived at this topic, Charlotte’s face turned troubled.
Skye noted the look and lowered himself, taking a seat beside her and mimicking her posture. [The clear conditions are very specific. Ralf isn’t the one to target, it’s Silver. If you can’t get him to love and accept you, you’ll get nowhere. Thankfully, he doesn’t seem like a major obstacle; there’s enough Ralf in him to make him a pushover,] the air Mimic voiced confidently, recalling Silver's battle against Atenisha.
[The real problem is getting him out in the first place. To do that, you'd need to get Ray out… which is proving incredibly difficult. He's clearly avoiding us, for whatever reason or reasons. Hopefully, whatever they are, they'll clear in time. Ray showing up earlier is a good sign. I'm sure that we'll be able to drag him out of the shadows with enough exposure. Ralf said that he and Ray are almost entirely alike save for a few superficial differences. If that's truly the case, Ray should eventually succumb to our charms, so to speak.]
Skye paused to take a breath and then shut his eyes.
[But that brings up another question. How do you feel about them, Ray and Silver, I mean? Could you see yourself in a poly relationship? Because that's exactly what it'd be. Loving Ralf but not Ray or Silver won't work. Like us, they are a package deal in a way. Pursuing Ralf alone will end in catastrophic failure. Not only will you not receive Ralf's love, but I strongly suspect that you'll also lose what love he has for you now. The ranking in his heart is clear, brother's a narcissist above all,] Skye's lips curled up to form a wry smile by the end of his words.
Charlotte's lips did the same. She didn't reply, letting the winds whisper into her ears for a good few seconds, as though awaiting the world to impart its wisdom.
[I don’t know,] she said after a contemplative silence. [Ray, Silver, I hardly know them...well the same could be said of Ralf, I suppose. I definitely like what I see from the videos but I’d have to meet them in person and get to know them better. If they are as similar to Ralf as he says they are, then I could definitely fall in love with them too. Still, only time will tell.
I'll play this by ear and follow my heart, as cliche as that sounds. As for the arrangement, I’m fine with it. It’s unorthodox but that's not an automatic deal breaker. With enough love, lust and consideration, anything can work. I’m willing to entertain any shape as long as I get to be together with him…with them.]
Skye blinked slowly as he felt the emotions embedded in Charlotte's words. His beloved sister was determined, more than he had ever seen her. He smiled and then dropped his palm on her shoulder before patting away.
[Truly the better half. You have my support, sis. Gathering information, setting up ploys and singing your praises, from today onward, I’ll be the best wingman there ever was.]
Charlotte smiled a sweet smile, her brother continued to be her greatest ally. She slung her arm around his shoulder and brought him in close before rubbing her cheek against his. [Thanks, bro, I'll be counting on you.]
Skye didn't buckle in her hold like usual and returned her affection in kind. After a few seconds of this, the pair ceased and Charlotte got to her feet, turned around and then offered Skye her hand.
[Come, brother, the Fawkes hunting season has begun and we must prepare the traps.]
[Of course.]
With these words traded, the Hunter Academy welcomed a different pair of Hunters.
