Passing through the wooden archway, Ralf’s steps hastened as he spotted the now familiar receptionist.
“Good day, Genise.”
Genise returned his greeting with a smile. “Good day to you too, young man.” Her gaze glided over his figure until it stopped at his stomach. When it did, she winced as yesterday’s memory surfaced in her mind. “Ralf, how’s your recovery going?”
“A-okay. I’m at a hundred percent. See,” Ralf lifted his shirt, revealing a different kind of shredded torso this time, “not even a scratch.” He held the pose for several seconds, only dropping it when the worry and concern faded from Genise’s eyes.
“I see. Then, you’re good for another day’s adventuring.”
“Yeah. For today, I’d like something more relaxed.”
“After yesterday’s excitement, I can’t blame you. Oh, and speaking of yesterday, Ralf, the Adventurer Association has identified the person who attacked you.”
“Oh, who is it, someone famous?”
Genise shook her head. “Not famous, but infamous. It was quite shocking to find out who he was. His name is Morris Belcher, and he is a known Adventurer killer.”
“Adventurer Killer?”
Seeing the expression change, Genise immediately understood the misunderstanding present and moved to explain. “Not like the title, I mean it literally. He’s known to have killed many Adventurers.”
Ralf’s confusion parted at the words. Morris was nothing like the original Adventurer Killer he had heard about; Marcus Davenport was a sympathetic villain, not a psychopath who killed to satisfy his own twisted pleasures as Morris did.
“He was said to be totally off the grid, roaming across the world, spending most of his time in Monster Zones, hunting and sadistically killing all those he caught sight of. The exact number is unknown but estimates put his total kill count in the hundreds. And they’re not all weaklings either, several veteran Adventurers and even a Hunter has fallen to him.”
“A Hunter did,” Ralf’s brows raised high at the revelation.
“Yes, it’s been confirmed. He’s been a target for elimination for several years now without getting caught, well until now,” her eyes focused on Ralf’s face and turned serious. “You’ve done well to bring him down. On behalf of the Adventurer Association, thank you, Adventurer Ralf.”
Ralf shook his head. “No need for thanks, it was a pleasure eliminating such trash.”
“Whether pleasurable or not, a ‘thanks’ is still in order. The loved ones of the many victims of his killings will be informed of his death. Closure is optimistic, but I’m sure they’ll feel better knowing the person who killed their loved one is dead and can do no more harm.”
“Yeah.”
A sombre silence followed the response. But this silence and mood were shattered five seconds later as an energetic voice came blasting from the entranceway.
“Ralf!”
Ralf glanced back and met the voice’s excited owner. “Yo Jeff, what’s up?”
Jeff’s face beamed. “That’s what I should be asking you," he quickly closed the distance and whispered, “got anything for me today?”
Ralf simply smiled at the question, then made a show of slowly turning to reveal Genise.
The mature receptionist’s expression turned wry as she caught the signal Ralf was giving with his blinks, indicating her cue.
“Miss Genise,” Jeff asked confusedly.
After sighing, Genise decided to play along. “Yes, Ralf has indeed got another story for you to spread.”
“Oh,” Jeff’s eyes lit up.
Watching his side profile, Ralf felt conflicted. ‘What have I done,’ he thought to himself.
At this point, Jeff was no different than an addict, feening for another hit, but instead of narcotics, it was exciting stories.
‘Getting high on your own supply, pitiful. What’s worse, even knowing this, I’ll continue to supply him, delivering even greater stories. The tales were true, us Fawkes truly destroy all around us.’

While Ralf was coming to terms with his destructive nature, Genise gave Jeff a rundown on the Morris situation.
“Whoa.”
Hearing it all, the wide-eyed Jeff stood awestruck. Ralf’s achievement hit him harder than it would others, for, unlike most people present, Jeff had been aware of Morris’ name beforehand. Jeff was a lover of stories and kept his ear close to the grapevine, so Morris’ tales had naturally become known to him. Knowing that the youth only metres away had slain this elusive boogeyman brought a great shock to his system.
“I knew it already, but you’re really amazing Ralf. Oh, those guns,” Jeff’s eyes caught the red and gold coloured guns holstered on Ralf’s person. “They’re Morris’ right?”
Ralf tapped them. “Yeah, they are. They looked pretty powerful, so I decided to keep them as trophies. Don’t like the colours though, I’m going to paint one black and the other white, and call them my Yin and Yang pistols.”
“Neat,” Jeff nodded then moved to the most important question. “How did you beat him? You have a perfect memory, right, so you have a video of the fight, right?”
‘Urgh…’
While keeping a cool exterior, Ralf internally buckled at the questions and the awkwardness that they summoned. His victory over Morris wasn’t something to be proud of. There was no way he’d show it to anyone. However, not doing so would come off as strange for his character. Luckily, he found a way to resolve this.
“I do, but I, unfortunately, can’t show you it.”
Jeff’s shoulders instantly dropped as though a piano fell on them. “Why,” he asked weakly.
Ralf quickly averted his eyes to resist the pitiful gaze Jeff was looking at him with.
“As you said, Morris was strong. During the fight, he forced me to use my one-shot super-secret ultimate hidden special million percent final attack on him. The technique is a Silver Path members-eyes-only technique, so I can’t explain or show you the fight…that’s why.”
Ralf ended his words with a nod, then turned to Jeff. Where he expected disappointment, he found excitement brewing in the other.
“I see, one-shot super-secret ultimate…attack,” Jeff mumbled with a blank look on his face. Not doubting Ralf’s words in the slightest, his mind began imagining bizarre possibilities.
Ralf left him be and turned to Genise, and tapped his head. “Connect me, I want to choose my mission.”
The elderly receptionist did as requested. Presented with the board, Ralf’s mind eye circled. ‘ Much fewer options than yesterday, I guess I might have something to do with that.’
“By the way, Morris had a ten gold bounty on him. It’s been added to your account.”
“Mmm nice,” Ralf said absentmindedly.
Money didn’t exactly excite him. ‘The missions are lame as ever,’ he thought as he continued moving his mind’s eye over the board. As he was doing this, he suddenly remembered.
“Oh, is Lady Martel here,” Ralf asked, remembering Jeff mentioning that she would be present today.
“Lady Martel, no, she’s not here yet.”
“When will she arrive? I want to do my C-Rank Adventurer test.”
“She said she’ll return by 2 pm.”
“So, in four hours. Okay, I’ll kill some time till then. Can you book me in for the test? Also, I’ll take mission G4.”
“Okay, will do.”
Genise focused internally and communicated Ralf’s requests. After a few seconds, she gave the confirmation. “Okay, everything’s been arranged. Anything else?”
“Nope, that’s everything, thanks.”
Ralf didn’t stay much longer. After trading a few more words with Jeff and Genise, he visited the teller, then made his exit.
