“Holy shit! It’s dead bodies!”

“Hey, come look over here.”

“Wasn’t that Ralf just now?”

“That was. Wait, he did this, whoa!”

Curious onlookers soon swarmed the blood bath. News of the massacre quickly spread across Ganurg, with Ralf’s apparent involvement gaining the most traction.

Who were these corpses? How had they died? What was the loud noise? Had Ralf killed them? Why had he killed them? Where was Ralf heading to?

Dozens of questions spawned from the event, most of which, would only be answered in a day’s time.

Lagner...

David and Cooper moved through the tavern’s entrance with rushed steps. Gazes brushing past the dozen faces on the first floor, the middle-aged men found the stairs and ascended. The second floor was much more lively as twenty-something people could be seen bantering around games, liquor and snacks. Not pausing on the sight, the pair ascended to the third floor. Not caring for the usual etiquette, they stormed into the office.

The two’s manner of entrance caused Tucker’s brows to scrunch up. But before addressing them, he turned to the junior member who had just delivered his food and said, “Clarence, be on your way.”

Clarence nodded and happily obliged. He made himself scarce in a matter of moments. When the door shut close, Tucker’s irritated gaze locked onto his two subordinates.

“David, Cooper, what is it?” he asked sternly.

Usually, such actions would warrant a more violent response from him, but Tucker showed leniency on the account that the two in front of him were part of his original gang in Kebria.

The pair approached the desk.

“Tucker, is it true? Did you send Charlie and Stuart after Ralf?” David asked with a tense face.

“I did,” Tucker responded snappily.

The confirmation caused the two’s faces to pale.

“That’s dangerous. You have to cancel it. Even if he is a traitor, I think Drey was right about him,” Cooper argued.

Tucker sighed then shook his head slowly. “Those rumours have gotten to you two as well, haa.” He got up and circled the desk, then placed his palms on the pair’s shoulders. “Ease up, there’s nothing to be afraid of. You’ll see the truth for yourself soon enough,” he removed his grip and headed for the window. “As for cancelling it...it’s too late. I’m sure Charlie and Stuart are on their way back already.”

“This a mistake boss, I can feel it.”

“We’ll get burned, I’m sure of it.”

David and Cooper made their case one after the other, their faces tense and filled with anxiety.

Tucker listened to every word but refused to budge from his position. “Burned you say? It’s true, a fire lies before us. However, it is one we’ll overcome - we must overcome. It was only when mankind conquered fire that they could advance and prosper. Similarly, the Red Star will conquer the flame that is Ralf Fawkes, and ascend to higher heights.”

The pair looked towards Tucker and imagined that the feelings they were currently experiencing were something Drey would be able to relate to. They turned to each other. Trading glances, both came to the same decision.

‘The Red Star is finished. We’ve got to get out of here.’

The carriage carrying Hana continued to trot along. Just over two kilometres separated it from Lagner’s northern entrance. Stuart sat patiently, eyes taking in the surrounding forestry. Doing so, his thoughts revolved around the Red Star’s future.

‘Brothels, brothels are the way to go. It worked for us then, and it’ll work for us now. Once we open a few, we’ll rise to the top again.’ He glanced at Hana. ‘She can be our first worker. She’ll definitely sell well.’

Smiling lewdly at the thought, Stuart’s hand moved over Hana’s thigh. Feeling the pleasant sensations hitting his palm and fingers, the gangster was further convinced of his notion. In his mind, the hourly rate was continuing to skyrocket.

‘And to think Drey was always saying we should avoid her…what a fool,’ Stuart thought in ridicule. ‘How many things has he gotten wrong? Seeing shadows everywhere he went, that’s no way to live, and certainly no way to strive. Haa, Kebria really fucked him up. Wonder where he’s at right now…hmm, a Psi plane?’

Picking up something in his periphery, Stuart’s attention honed in on it. Turning his head, he spotted a small blue object streaking through the sky. He squinted. It was too far away to see clearly. However, he was positive that it was a Psi plane of sorts.

Watching it race across the skyline, Stuart frowned; a sense of discomfort had suddenly struck him.

A Psi plane wasn’t exactly rare, but it wasn’t too common either. Taking in this Psi plane, alarm bells couldn’t help but ring in his head. It rang louder and louder until the sound became unignorable.

‘Wait, is that...’

Stuart’s face tensed up as a possibility passed through his head. With hundreds of metres separating them, the lanky gangster couldn’t identify the pilot. His physical senses weren’t enhanced and at the distance, his Psi Sense couldn’t pick up the Rank 3 signature the Psi Plane was radiating.

Still, when considering his current actions and the plane’s direction, Stuart was convinced that ‘Ralf Fawkes’ was the plane’s pilot. At the notion, the lanky gangster jolted in place. Accompanying the jolt were words spoken by Drey before he parted.

Don’t mess with him. My instincts have never been more clear on anything. That kid…Ralf Fawkes is dangerous.

Stuart shook his head wildly, as though trying to have the unpleasant thought escape his mind.

‘There’s no way. Where’s Charlie and the others, don’t tell me…’ Eyes widening, Stuart stayed idle no more.

“Watch the hostage.” Saying this to the driver, Stuart hopped out of the carriage. Then, after shrouding himself in dense Rank 5 Telekinetic Psi, his figure shot off.

‘Mom mom mom…’

Flying through the sky, Silver recited on repeat, as though it were a spell that would summon his beloved mother to his side. He was out of it. His thoughts and emotions were scrambled to a degree it had never been before.

Right now, only one thing existed in his mind, the mission to rescue his mother from the Red Star’s vile clutches. It was due to this one track mindedness that Silver failed to notice his mother below.

While she was hidden from view, had he set his eyes on the driver at the front, Silver would have recognized his face, and considered the possibility that his mother had yet to arrive at the tavern. However, with his emotions and thoughts in turmoil, such considerations were lost to him.

‘...mom mom mom…’

Anger and hatred burned brightly in his heart, but more than these two emotions, it was fear and anxiety that were the most strongly felt by the fused being.

Even worse, Silver was forced to experience these feelings at length. The minute-long trip from Ganurg to Lagner stretched out to infinity…at least, this is what it felt like to Silver through his warped time perception. The seconds passed agonisingly.

Finally...

An eternity later, Lagner came into sight. Upon capturing the three-story tavern, Silver’s entire being shifted.

‘Focus.’ At this command, his body and mind were forced to obey. In an instant, the instability that plagued him seconds earlier was snuffed out. Suppressing all useless thoughts and emotions, he shifted into combat mode and focused on completing the task before him.

The fluctuations both internally and externally were ironed flat by his indomitable will, and with a mask-like expression and similarly blank eyes, he carried out his next actions like a machine would, swiftly and precisely.

*Swoosh*

Dematerializing the Psi Plane, Silver entered free fall. Applying Psi, he slowed his momentum. Then, conjuring a lengthy Psi rope and ‘latching’ one end onto the sky, he swung through the air. Moving in an arc, he flew towards the tavern at high speed.

To minimise detection, Silver ceased Psi use after dematerializing the rope. Eyes forward, he focused on the fast-approaching second floor window pane. He scrunched his body up, bracing for imminent impact.

*Crash*

Giving himself a last-moment coat of blue, Silver burst into the second floor’s confines. Flying through the air, shards of glass and wood decorated the space at his sides and in his wake. His sudden and unexpected entrance caused half of the gangsters present to have their mental cogs halt in bafflement. As for the other half, they had yet to register the presence of the invader.

While the gangsters were mentally catching up to the reality before them, all of Silver’s attention was focused on his Psi Scan. As soon as he entered, he expanded it till the whole building was swallowed up by it. Pushing his Psi Scan’s perception to its limits, he desperately searched for his mom’s figure.

‘Nowhere,’ his heart sank as he came up empty. Thoughts racing at lightning speed, possibilities, both good and bad flittered through his head. However, before he could delve into them, the ongoing situation dragged his attention away.

‘Focus.’

The order given, his bumbling thoughts and emotions straightened themselves out in an instant. His mind returned to the dimension-splitting level of sharpness it was usually at, and then a moment later, slaughter ensued.

‘Die.’

*Bang* * Bang* Bang*…

Guns rocketed from his holsters to his side, aiming every which way, then without a moment’s delay, blasted. Lead rippled out throughout the room, ending ten lives in an instant. The element of surprise, their lack of training to prepare for such an invasion, and the intoxicants that coursed their bloodstream; all served to slow them down enough for Silver to reap their lives casually.

The remaining ten were sharper, having dodged or put up a defence just in time. However, while they were more capable than their dead companions, it wasn’t enough to withstand Silver’s advances. While firing the guns floating around him, he moved from one to the other, Psi blades slashing the gangsters into chunks. Seconds later, he was at his last target, the Rank 4 Telekinetic Aldabake.

Adorned in Psi armour, the middle-aged man looked no different than a deer in headlights. Frightened, he held up a wonky guard in hopes that it would fend off his opponent. But this wasn’t to be. The guns floating around Silver rapidly shifted their aim to focus on one spot, then all fired simultaneously.

*Crack* *Crack* *Crack* *Crack*

Aldabake jolted as his chest was struck. The concentration of bullets carved a chink in his armour, which Silver readily took advantage of. Appearing before the other, Silver’s Psi Lance coated right-hand thrust forward. Breaking through the other’s barrier and piercing into the gangster’s flesh, Silver poured his Psi into Aldabake’s body and…

*Splat*

Ravaged by Silver’s unmitigated and unkind telekinesis, the gangster’s body blew apart in an explosion of blood and guts. Clearing out the floor, Silver actions didn’t pause an iota. His attention moved to the floor above, where he had sensed three people earlier.

For the moment, Silver disregarded Tucker’s existence and focused on the two Rank 4 Telekinetic auras above him, more specifically where they stood. Running the necessary calculations in a flash, Silver moved to enact his plan. Slicing Strings conjured, he had them whip at the ceiling above.

Their impeccable sharpness sliced through the wood and concrete like a hot knife through butter and quickly cut out a large triangle. The triangle descended with gravity’s aid, and following closely behind, a now mentally scrambled David and Cooper. Losing their footing so suddenly, the two found themselves in a precarious predicament.

Silver took full advantage of it. His guns’ barrel’s zeroed in on David and with a collective bang, the gangster’s head was blown off. Killing one, Silver’s guns’ rushed to the second target. Another bang was let off, but Cooper’s freshly materialised tower shield tanked the blow. Silver saw this and decided against a second bombardment. Instead, he took a more direct approach.

Swoosh!

Dashing towards the still-falling gangster, Silver’s Psi Drill formed around his right hand.

‘Shit!’

Recognizing this new threat, Cooper added a few layers to his Psi shield while adjusting his body as best as he could.

At a glance, Silver understood that his Psi Drill wouldn’t be able to instantly puncture through the shield and decided to switch things up. Following impact, he activated his Flicker and drove forward with Cooper’s figure acting as his own tower shield. Speeding across the room, he had the gangster crash through a table, a chair and then a stone wall.

Eyes forward, he saw Cooper’s face recoil in pain. Squinting at the sight, Silver resumed the Psi Drill’s rotation. A twisted tune rang out as the tip began tunnelling into the shield before it; to aid its penetration, he planted his feet and used his physical strength to push forward.

‘Ah no no no no no’…

On the other end, Cooper was in shambles. Back against the wall, he poured all his energy into his barrier, hoping to survive the ordeal. However, his efforts could only buy him a few seconds, a fact that struck him at this very moment.

‘...not like this, damn it damn it!’

Despair and indignation coloured the gangster’s face.

The former was because of his impending death and the latter, due to the identity of his attacker. Even having never seen him, Cooper was certain that the young man before him was the ‘Ralf Fawkes’, the Red Star had made an enemy of. In these final moments, Cooper’s heart flooded with feelings of indignation and regret.

Desperate to survive, his lips moved to plead for his life. But before he could sound a word, Silver prevented the possibility entirely.

Bang!

With all Cooper’s focus and Psi at the drill’s tip, Silver’s pistol arrived at the other’s temple unnoticed and with a pull of the trigger, the bullet tore through the other’s skull, sending a concoction of blood, spinal fluid and brain matter spilling onto the wall.

At the grotesque display, Silver’s gaze remained cold and calculated, totally focused on his next move, and the dozens of moves after that. Taking a brief gander at the third floor, Silver shifted his attention to the first floor.

Three Slicing Strings appeared and whipped out at the floor beneath him. Then, along with the triangle of floor/ceiling, he dropped into the first floor.

Taking in the dozen or so gangsters present, Silver’s eyes gleamed with a murderous light.

The slaughter continued.
