Dexter tapped his fingers on his cheeks as he scanned his surroundings, bored. They were late. All three of them. “And I’m the irresponsible one.” He muttered into the palm of his hand. He sat on the edge of a fountain in the center of an open-air shopping plaza, watching people go about their day. He reached his hand back behind him and trailed his fingertips through the fountain water lazily. He sighed deeply, tracing shapes in the water.
When he felt a hand on his shoulder he assumed it was Jardin. The word “finally” started spilling at of his mouth as he turned to him. But before he could even see who it was, they were shoving him into the fountain.
The icy cold water enveloped Dexter, instantly seeping through his clothes, through his skin. He opened his eyes underwater and through the bubbles and the haze of the dirty water he saw that motherfuckers face.
The disorientation faded quickly as his feet found some solid ground. Dexter burst out of the fountain hand outstretched for his neck. He undershot, tripping over the lip of the fountain his chin and elbows cracking on the pavement. Hard.
“Hey pipsqueak, whatcha doing? Trying to get even shorter?” Nave and his buddies who Dexter could never remember the names of, laughed as if he just said the most hilarious thing ever. Dexter rolled his eyes. He pushed himself up feeling blood trickle down his forearms from his elbows. He stood slowly as they continued to laugh and make jabs at his height.
That was really just a suspicion. The adrenaline roaring in Dexter’s ears drowned out their voices. He wiped the blood off his scraped chin.
Then he launched himself at Nave’s stupid face.
Dexter’s fist collided with his laughing mouth as he threw his whole weight into him. Dexter took him down, grinning as he heard the satisfying sound of skull on pavement. Dexter got up faster than he could and gave a swift kick to his ribs before his friends could jump him, One of them hooked his arms under Dexter’s arms and pulled him away from Nave before he could kick him again. Dexter let him hold his whole weight as he curled his legs up then threw himself forward, wrenching himself out of his hold. Dexter kicked his feet out from under him. Without hesitation, he tackled the third one as he stalked towards him. Dexter caught him low, under the hips. Dexter was dragged off him by the hair. He grabbed the arm that had him and used it as leverage to aim a kick at his head. It connected but he dropped Dexter and his shoulder blades struck the ground. Dexter saw the bottom of a shoe coming for his face and rolled away. He stood as quickly as he could, already guarding his face and torso as well as he could. The three of them faced him, breathing hard. He didn’t move, waiting for them to attack first.
They didn’t though.
Instead Nave got decked in the side of the face by Wren, who barreled into the scene, fist first. Page was there too, half a step behind him, throwing one of Nave’s buddies into the other. Wren stumbled after his punch connected, once he was stable he held his fist up and bellowed, “Fuck off!”
Faced with all three of them, Nave and his cronies had no choice but to run off with their tails between their legs.
“You okay?” Page asked, running her hand through her shoulder-length blonde hair.
“I’m fine.” Dexter lowered his fists to his sides.
“You’re bleeding.” Wren sighed, walking up to him and dabbing at the blood on hjs chin with his sleeve.
Dexter brushed him away. “That is not helping.”
Before Wren could respond, Jardin reached the others, huffing and puffing. He bent over, holding his knees and breathing hard. “Why….. are you….. guy…. so fast?” He gasped.
“Probably time travel.” Dexter joked, dropping an arm on his shoulders. “But that means you guys don’t have an excuse to be late.”
