Chapter 06: Kenichi is Calm

At home.

“Ken-chan! What happened to the soy sauce?”

“Ah, come to think of it. I forgot to buy it.”

“Hm.”

“I’m sorry. But the supermarket isn’t closed yet, so I’ll go again.”

“No problem. I’ll get it tomorrow.”

I talked with Uchida-san so much that I forgot about the soy sauce my mother had asked for.

“Ara, Ken-chan.”

“What?”

“Did something good happen?”

“Good thing?”

“Because you’re grinning so hard.”

“Ah! No, no! It’s nothing!”

I said and headed to the shower room to wash up.

I washed my body from top to bottom more cleanly than usual and went into my room.

Then I got into my futon and tried to remember the exchange I had with Uchida-san.

“Kenichi, are you a university student?”

“N-no. I’m studying to be a firefighter!”

“Ara, a firefighter, I see. You risked your life to save mine, so I’m sure you’ll make a great firefighter.”

“Y-yes… Thank you!”

“Fufu.”

Though I did lie about my age, it is true that I’m following in my dad’s footsteps to become a firefighter, still it was really nice to get praise for that from a beautiful Onee-san.

“Ouu…”

The smile she gave me.

My body shivered slightly.

“Uchida-san, um… you’re a working person, right? Perhaps, you’re a model or even an actress… haha.”

I wanted to hit myself for a second, for being so soft-spoken to a beautiful woman.

But even with my restless way of talking, Uchida-san didn’t look at me like a high school girl of today would and say, “What do you mean? So gross.” Instead, she smiled at me gently and answered my questions without a second thought.

“I’m a writer.

“Ohh… you’re a writer. That’s amazing.”

Writer, huh.

Uchida-san is a calm woman.

She must have been a literary girl when she was a child, judging by her mood.

I don’t have a long life experience yet, but the beautiful woman in front of me looks like a rare woman nowadays, a little bit far from the category of ordinary women in the world.

I didn’t ask her what she writes because I was afraid that if she thought I was prying too deep, her impression of me would suffer as well.

I’m honestly not good at playing games between men and women or anything like that, but I did my best to get close to her somehow.

And as a result.

“Kenichi, can you give me your contact information?”

“Eh?”

“It’s late already, so I’d like to talk with you some other time.”

“Y-yes! Of course!”

So I got Uchida-san’s phone number and LINE account!

“Uoooooooooooooh!!!”

I kicked the futon around.

When I was rejected by Uchida, not by her, but by Uchida from the same class as me, I was so overcome with grief that I wet the futon with my tears…

And as I was now.

I was moved to tears.

Tomorrow is school.

I should probably get some sleep.

But before that let’s enjoy this thrill and elation for a while longer.

The next day.

Inside the class.

Before homeroom.

“Kenichi.”

“Hmm?”

“You’re grinning too much. Did something good happen to you?”

“Ah, no! I don’t mean to do it.”

“Hmm~”

Following my mother, Yuto, who was sitting in front of me, saw my face and lunged at me. Nevertheless, he smiled at me without questioning me any further.

Then I saw Rino and her friend talking.

“Rino-chan! They recently opened a new dessert shop, wanna go?”

“Ah, the place that sells all that stuff?”

“Yes!”

“I’m free after school, so let’s go together then!”

I was sitting in my seat, listening to the exchange between the girls with the corners of my mouth slightly turned up.

“?”

I tilted my head on the way out.

Strangely, it was because Itge pain and sense of urgency in my heart that I felt when I looked at her seemed to have disappeared.

After the class was over and it was after school.

“Kenichi! I’m sorry! I’ve got some urgent work and can’t come home with you today!”

“O-okay. You must have something very important to do.”

“It’s related to my father’s work!”

“See you tomorrow.”

“Oka- Just remembered! Dad said he’s going to buy Kenichi something delicious, so let’s talk about that later too!”

“OK!”

Then Yuto apologetically clasped his hands together before exiting the classroom in a hurry.

I’m looking forward to it because Yuto’s dad is quite an interesting guy.

I moved my legs too, thinking that.

Uchida was still chatting with her friends and I walked faster to get past them.

“Let’s go then!”

Uchida said so and moved her beautiful white legs which were mostly in sight thanks to her rather short skirt.

I walked without making a sound so that Uchida and the others wouldn’t notice me, but my feet got tangled up with hers for her to notice.

“No!”

She falls over.

“Look out!”

I said and quickly grabbed her from behind and held her in my arms.

Luckily, she didn’t bump into anything as she was protected by my arm.

“!!!”

For a moment, her whole body twitched.

So I immediately let her go and apologize.

“Sorry. Are you hurt?”

“No. I’m okay.”

Her magenta eyes locked with mine.

The old me would have been so nervous about the girl who dumped me that I couldn’t even talk to her, but now for some reason, I’m extremely calm.

I open my mouth without taking my eyes off her face.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“!! Uh, yeah… See you tomorrow.”

I said, and I moved my feet.

And left the classroom.

I was too calm as I walked with light steps to the entrance. Seeing myself like this, I felt I was seeing a different person.

I couldn’t believe how much I have changed since yesterday…

While being puzzled by my change, and trying to figure out what caused it.

My phone rang.

So I quickly took it out and checked the screen.

[Ayane Uchida-san.]

I opened the LINE app a little excitedly after seeing who it was from.

[Kudo-kun, when can we meet again?]

“Ouu…”

The message sent by the beautiful Onee-san was more than enough to make my heart soar.

Heart…

Come to think of it, Uchida-san’s b*****s are…

“What in the world am I thinking…”

I said with a sigh, and then moved my feet again, which had stopped before I knew it.

I lied to Uchida-san and told her I was 21.

As I said before, I was afraid that if such a quiet and beautiful lady learned that I was a high school student, I would not be taken seriously by her.

I felt like I was doing something very wrong.

But,

Maybe the reason I didn’t lose my cool when I held Uchida in my arms from the same class as me is probably related in some way to the fact that I did something wrong to Uchida-san.

I suddenly had a question in my head that had no basis in fact or context.

Lies and Truth…

I was freaked out for a second, but then…

I regained my composure.

And I looked back at myself in the mirror in the hallway.
