Gei didn't pay any significant attention to the mercenaries. They didn't follow her to the forest, as they weren't hunters.

When she came out of the forest only quarter of an hour later, she dragged a tree behind her. She had already cut off the limbs and root ball, and absorbed the life elements from the debris. She dragged the two foot thick trunk along the wasteland, which left an easily followed trail.

When she didn't return to the town an hour later, the mercenaries wandered down to the forest and found the marks on the ground from the tree. They didn't take it seriously, and followed the trail.

This showed their inability to detect danger. Gei had already uprooted a tree in town, and now they came across a heavy mark that ran from the forest into the wasteland.

By the time they even got half way to her location, the full night gloom fell upon the wasteland after the sun went down.  Dark elements surged out of the ground so thick that it was a black fog that couldn't be seen through.

"We shouldn't be out here on the wasteland at night!" A mercenary said to the squad's leader.

"We have a job to do, so we do the job." The leader said. The others looked at him.

"If we're caught out on the wasteland, the governor will have our heads!" He said firmly. "We shouldn't be out here!" The leader turned back.

"If you go back, you'll be booted." He said. The guy frowned, looked around, and shook his head. The longer he was out here, the gloom stirred up his fear. How could he know that his lack of courage here prevented Gei from taking her anger out on him?

"I'd have to be alive to be booted! I'm out!" He immediately turned back and followed the trail back to the forest. The gloom was so thick, he wouldn't have been able to find his way back to the town on his own.  He couldn't believe he was so foolish to come out onto the wasteland for a contract.  No member of the Mercenary Union would accept a contract to go out here at night, but now they came out here to kill a child.  He was disgusted with the Union now.

"Coward." The leader said.

They continued on, but soon, the gloom started to clear. They grew unnerved when they found an area where the gloom had thinned out, because it wasn't exactly a clear space. The dark elements that rested on the wasteland all surged towards one spot up ahead.

The mercenary leader groaned when he saw all that elemental energy pouring into the girl they were contracted to kill.

"I think we just kicked a stone bear in the balls."

Gei groaned as the dark elements rushed into her body. She had a problem with being too calm earlier, as she absorbed a lot of light and water elements during the last day or so. Now that the dark elements rushed towards her, it started to balance the light out.

Now that the calming elements were balanced out, she became angrier the longer the mercenaries followed her. They dared to try and come right up to her new home? Did they expect that she wouldn't do anything?

She had returned to a balanced temperament. Did that matter right now?

Yes. It allowed her to shed the calm where she had to incite herself to react like she did with the Griel guards previously. As the dark elements were devoured hungrily by her, the flame elements that remained nearby seemed to come alive.

The flame fountain, a natural gathering point during the day, released its reserves in a highly visible fashion. The remaining six mercenaries now wished they had obeyed the governor, and not come out to this wasteland.

Their target was so far out of their league, they couldn't even begin to see where they were on the power scale compared to her.

They might have lasted longer against a stone bear.

Gei dragged her log back towards the town, flipped the six bodies off the log she dragged, stripped all the metal gear off them, daggers, swords, and the random bits like a belt buckle, then disappeared again.

"Stupid bastards." Venn said and pulled his sword. He cut off the heads of the dead bodies, and called out. "Drom, get the cart. We'll send them back to the Mercenary Union, and send word to the governor. Let him know the union decided to disobey the order not to enter the wasteland."

"Sure. I guess they believed that the chances this girl was the one who caused all that trouble was quite low. I wonder what the Union Master will do." Drom said quietly as he pulled the cart up.

"Him? What else would he do? He's arrogant. More people are going to die." Venn snorted and helped his friend to load the bodies.

Once at the Mercenary Union, they dropped off the bodies, and went to report to the governor. Before the summons to report to the governor was able to be written up, the Union Master was already on his way into the wasteland with thirty more men.

The Union Master was so arrogant, he still couldn't believe that one child was able to kill six of his men. He brought thirty men as a way of showing force to the town's governor.

Too bad it was wasted as intimidation.

"Dumb. More men. More dead." Gei said angrily. "Right to my home. Make me lose temper." Her teeth ground together for a brief second. She reached down and picked up a stone block she had just made.

"Night. Shine like torch." She threw the first stone spear and hit someone in the leg. For others, it might be difficult to see people out on the wasteland during the gloom of night, but for Gei, it was simple. Each person glowed green with life elements.

"Aim off." She frowned. "Oh." She exclaimed as she threw another one. White energy wavered around the spear as it flew, and she realized that it was the power of the winds that blew around her all night.

The wind was strong up on the plateau, but she didn't have much of it. However, she did have enough to alter the way the spear flew.

Gei grinned as a dozen spears were thrown, and a dozen men pinned like dolls to the wasteland. She heard a shout.

"Come out and fight, you coward!"

The Union Master felt self righteous anger as he walked out onto the wasteland, and arrogant rage when he watched each of his men get hit by a spear.

"We're being picked off!" One cried out. A spear went through his body, right in the middle of his chest. The Union Master growled.

"Come out and fight, you coward!" he roared. Immediately after that, he heard a laughter in the air.

"Coward? You chase girl. Many men. You coward." Gei grinned wickedly, and jumped off the plateau.

"Now angry." It was quite dark, and the gloom had started to rise from the ground again, which obscured their vision.  However, once again, she sucked it up like water.

As the air cleared, he saw many things, and each more terrifying than the last. Red flames leaked from bright red eyes that looked like glowing coals. Dark flames circulated over the surface of her skin. Orange flames leaked from the mouth with a wide wicked grin. Each color represented even hotter temperatures, the red being the coldest, while still being hot enough to scorch the surface of a stone.

"DEMON BEAST! SHE'S A DEMON BEAST!" One of his men yelled out. The Union Master groaned.

He knew that it was not a beast, nor a demon. Even the highest leveled elementalist he knew, the Union Master in the Capital, could not do the things this girl could do.

There were no words for the amount of regret he felt for bringing his men out onto the wasteland to die. A memory of only a few nights ago flashed within him mind, and he realized a simple truth.

"It's not a beast. It's the birth of a high elementalist." His tone was one of utter defeat. Almost half of his men were already dead, and it wouldn't be long before the rest followed them in death.

He watched as she passed in a blur, screams were cut off, and new screams erupted. As he turned, all he could see were fountains of blood, flames, and looks of terror. He also realized that she killed his men around him, and left him for last.

For the first time in his life, Salig felt fear. He and his men, would die tonight for his arrogance, and foolishness.
