When Trey came out of his daze, he was in the back of a police car, the blue haired woman in the passenger seat of the car speaking into the talky.

“This is Officer Jenny, Badge Number 529. Bringing in a Male, silver hair, height of.. approximately 5 foot 10 inches, appears 16 to 18 years of age for the 11-17 off Main Street. A Ralts is also accompanying. Male unresponsive, requesting trauma unit on arrival, over.”

Trey flinched at the mention of Ralts as he felt the Mon in his arms, a thin connection between them as she looked up back at him, her head tilting slightly to the side.

Trey chuckled softly, “The embrace pokemon huh…” he whispered as he felt the feeling of understanding and comfort from her.

He tightened his arms around the small Pokemon ever so slightly before Officer Jenny turned around, hearing him speak.

“Hey Kid. You back with us? Do you know your name?” she asked.

Trey glowered back at her from his down tilted head, his brows fixed in the same down tilt.

“Trey…” he grumbled.

“Last name?”

“I don’t have one..” he answered back.

Jenny sighed and then gave a forlorn smile, “I understand this must be hard for you, but we are taking you to the station for some questions,” her gaze hardened, “So we can catch the people who did this.”

Trey’s face turned to surprise at how genuine Jenny was about wanting to find the perpetrator through her tone of voice, and he relaxed slightly, nodding.

“Also don’t mind Growlith he's only there to make sure you stay put,” she grinned trying to stay positive.

Growlith? Trey thought, slowly turning his head to spot a black, orange, and white mon in the seat next to him, its tongue hanging lazily to the side of its mouth, that he somehow didn’t notice in his daze.

“Raooooooo!” Growlith howled, making Trey jump slightly, startling Ralts forcing him to wince slightly and through his movement and surprise passing through their connection.

Trey felt a pang of nausea as he felt fear and anxiety come through the connection with Ralts, but he fought to keep it from showing, but he wasn’t able to keep it from leaking into their connection.

Ralts looked up with a small whine, her beautiful crimson red eyes looking at him from under her scarred green cap.

“I’m sorry Ralts, I didn’t mean to bring up those kinds of emotions… I know you’ve been through too much also…” Trey said, doing his best to soothe the small mon in his arms.

His hand moved to placate her as he gently did his best to pat her head. Trying to not touch the spots that had the small pink marks on her cap.

Trey’s hand moved back and forth as she cooned, leaning into his hand as their connection reaffirmed her comfort at his touch.

Officer Jenny gave a quick glare to Growlith as he lowered his head slightly with a whine as well. Before she craned her neck back and gave a caring look to the pair.

“I’m sorry you have to deal with all of this so soon, but the quicker we have this reported the sooner everything gets solved, Trey,” she said comfortingly.

Trey just nodded his head, looking dotingly down at Ralts as he continued to do his best to comfort her as she was doing for him.

But he was soon emotionally charged again as a male voice came over the radio.

This is dispatch, we have received confirmation of a male and female juvenile being found at the 11-17, they are being rushed to Saffron Central Medical ICU, over.

Jenny snatched the radio receiver with lighting speed as she replied, “Officer 529 copy. Appreciate the update, will relay Dispatch, over.”

Trey’s hand shook as he slowly wrapped his arms around Ralts again, fear and relief taking hold of him.

So someone did make it out… He thought, and to his surprise he received images of abstract comfort. The sun, flying pokemon singing, and the smell of spring and warmth fill his head.

Looking down he saw Ralts looking back once again, a small curve upwards on her thin lips.

Trey smiled for the first time since the incident, and whispered as he gave her another soft hug, “Thank you Ralts…”

Looking up he spoke to Jenny, “I would like to see them as soon as possible please.”

Jenny gave a quick wrap on the mesh separating the front and back of the car.

“You got it. We just need to get this filed and I’ll take you there myself. John, step on it or no Poke’ Donuts on the way back!” she ordered.

“Oh now I’m getting addressed! And threatened! I deserve a raise…” John grumbled.

Trey’s smile turned to a wry grin as he finally noticed the fifth person in the car. The driver.

“Sorry Officer John, I really appreciate you going as fast as possible,” Trey said.

The officer only tilted his head and stepped on the gas, “Don’t sweat it kid, let the adults do their job, and will find the bastard that did this.”

Jenny slapped him on the arm, “Language you idiot!”

A light bark from Growlith sending her point home.

Officer John’s ears turned a light shade of red as he pulled his cap down, speeding up ever so slightly.

Trey chuckled on the outside, but inside his thoughts were far darker.

Yeah the bastard that did it.. We will find him. One way or another.

A few minutes later, Trey and the officers made it to the police station’s parking lot. Both officers exited the car first, and opened the back for Ralts and he to exit, followed by a more than energetic Growlith as he shook and stretched next to Jenny.

Trey placed Ralts on the ground letting her walk for herself, a little reluctant to part ways with the mon. A small knot of despair beginning to form in his stomach.

He looked to the tower in front of the station, its clock ticking down.

[11:42]

It’s getting late… Everyone… would have been sleeping by now. He thought, his mind turning to the two survivors. I need to get this done quickly and go see who it is. I can only imagine how devastated they are…

Trey bent down to Ralts, the officers waiting patiently for him to finish as they looked on from the car.

“Ok, sweetie. I would understand if you want to go now. I can’t thank you enough for helping me.. Well, not break,” he said, scratching the back of his head with an embarrassed scoff, “But I don’t want you to have to stick with me just because you feel obligated…”

Trey trailed off and looked down, more than a little weary and exhausted. The feeling of embarrassment from not being able to properly return what he felt was a bigger favor for what he assumed was for the food he gave her.

A white sleeve came into Trey’s vision, then a second one, raising his head slightly. Another connection formed like a drop of rain on the fire of his chaotic heart and mind. The feelings of calm and understanding being pushed to overwhelm the uncertainty and self loathing he felt.

More abstract images of a cooling breeze, waves against the rocks and touch of the morning sun further calming him.

He gave a relieved puff of air as he looked again at Ralts, the pokemon who was helping a man many times her size. Trey tried his best to push back the same comforting emotions of understanding. As he knew he was not the only one suffering.

“Do you want to stay?” he asked pensively.

“Ralts!” she chirped back, as if saying ‘of course’, her connection to him only confirming with the abstract emotion of happiness and excitement.

Trey gave a sidelong smile and stood up looking down.

“Alright then, it's settled. Welcome to the family, as my first pokemon.”

Ralts raised an arm in the air in agreement, her other tugging at his pants leg.

Trey looked a little confused until her second arm rose.

“Oh! Ok,” Trey said, bending down to pick the mon up, wrapping his arms around her as she sat nestled in his arms looking forward like a little kid.

“Onward together then?” he asked.

Ralts gave a nod through their psychic connection and pointed an arm forward.

Tray chuckled and began walking towards the station. The Officers and Growlith leading the way.

It was a silent walk save for the traffic in and out of the station as they entered. Ralts garnering some stars from some of the officers as they passed.

Trey could only glare back at them and did his best to cover her with his arms. As he knew they were stealing glances at her wounds, but Trey couldn’t very well start a fight in a police station.

After a few more moments of walking he was led to a small room and told to sit down.

Sitting down Trey winced slightly, as he was reminded his side was bruised from earlier.

God that is tender, fucking…

Officer John kept him company as Officer Jenny, left to get the paperwork.

“We will have to ask eventually. But is that Ralts yours?” John asked.

Trey wasn’t sure how to answer. Hesitation and anxiety filled his head for a moment, as he looked down at her scarred green cap.

“She- she’s a rescue.. Her previous owner was abusive so I took her from him,” he replied, bending the truth a little.

“Do you have the paperwork for her rescue?” John asked suspiciously.

“I-” Trey’s voice started shaky, but a warm feeling crossed over him as Ralts’s hand touched his, bringing a grin to his face, “I don’t but I’ll do whatever it takes to get it. There’s no way I can let Ralts go back to someone like that asshole.”

John gave a look of astonishment for a moment but sighed and scratched the back of his head, “Well, I can see from how she’s acting it doesn’t seem to be a lie and that she’s at least comfortable around you. But those burns are concerning, you best have her looked at when you go to the hospital. I know there are Chansey and Nurses on staff. As for the paperwork… We can get it done quickly here.”

And as if on cue Officer Jenny paced through the door, Growlith trotting along proudly next to her, a small pile of papers under her arm, and a steaming bowl of Katsudon in the other.

“Here you go kiddo,” she said as she placed the bowl down as she sat, “It’s a bit hot so give it a sec kay’?”

Trey just nodded, breaking the chopsticks before offering a prayer to Arceus. Ralts looked curiously upwards at the gesture and made to copy him, her white sleeves pressing together as she bowed her head slightly.

Smirking, Trey blew on the food, picking up a cutlet.

“Here sweetie, I know you're hungry too,” he said, offering the piece to her. She looked at the food hesitantly but with some coaxing from Trey she began to quickly nibble then devour the food little by little.

Jenny and John looked on endearingly at the scene, but were forced to get back to business.

“Now, Trey. I’m going to have to ask you a few questions, some of which may be uncomfortable but please bear with me kay’?” Officer Jenny said.

Trey nodded and continued to slowly offer Ralts the food as he listened.

“Where were you at 10 PM today?” she asked.

Trey flinched. He couldn’t tell her exactly. The bar he was working at was just that, a bar, and he was underaged. Not to mention it second as a gambling ring for Saffron.

“I was at my job...” Trey offered.

“Where and name of the establishment. Anyone who can corroborate your story will help as well,” Officer Jenny asked, pressing him slightly.

“It’s a small dance club.. Owned by a woman named Kristine,” he replied.

Sorry Kristne… I’m sure she will understand… He thought desperately.

Ralts sensed the increase in anxiousness and stopped chewing on the cutlet long enough to look upwards at him, the breaded slice dangling out of her mouth.

Patting her on the head he prepared for the next question.

“Do you have a phone number for the club?”

“No.”

“Address?”

“23 Main Street. Red Bricked Building.” Trey answered.

Officer Jenny gave a nod to John and he exited the room.

“Now do you know if there was anyone who had any reason to do this to the Orphanage?” she asked finally.

Trey clenched his teeth, “No! Who would want to hurt a bunch of Orphans and a sweet lady like Miss Urah!?”

Officer Jenny didn’t recoil or flinch letting him air his anger.

“Are you sure there wasn’t anyone recently that seemed suspicious or may have wanted something?” she asked again in a flat tone.

Trey deflated slightly, realizing he had snapped at her and also startled Ralts again.

“Sorry… No.. Wait. There was a man earlier today. He was wearing all black so I couldn’t tell you anything really. He had a deep voice, and was about 6 foot, maybe a little taller?” he offered.

“Anything else?” Jenny asked, writing something down.

“He.. he had a red R on his dress shirt. That’s it though.”

Officer Jenny’s eyes narrowed at that. Writing down something on the paper as well.

“Can you remember anything else from today?” she asked.

Trey took a moment going over the day in his head slowly, but there wasn’t much in the way of anything out of the ordinary outside the man at lunch.

Trey eventually shook his head no, “If that’s all I’d like to be brought to the hospital as soon as possible.”

Officer Jenny continued to write down some things, as the door opened behind him. Officer John entered, with another few papers in hand.

“Kid’s story checks, the woman Kristine Luva at 23 Main Street says he was working tonight. She sounded very concerned, and…. Friendly…” John said, slightly flushed in the cheeks, “We’re sending a car out to check and ask questions but looks good.”

Officer John walked up behind Trey, and placed some papers in front of him pointing to them with his free hand.

“Here’s the rescue papers. Just fill it out here, we’ll submit it then they will send you a bill for the license,” John explained.

Trey looked up to him then Officer Jenny, “I um, don’t have a place of residence anymore.. And a bill huh..” he mumbled looking down at Ralts, then shook his head.

Doesn’t matter the cost, I’ll figure it out.

Jenny looked slightly sorrowful after hearing Trey.

“We can figure that out on the way to the hospital. We’re pretty much done here, let’s just fill out the forms, alright?”

Trey nodded.

“Ok,” she said, pointing to several lines on the papers she had been writing on, “This form here says that you have given a statement willingly of the night June, 14th 2020,” she pulled out another sheet, and pointed, “This is a form I’d like you to fill saying we can contact you in the future for the case. Seeing as you don’t have a place to stay, we can just list your place of work as your contact. Is that alright?”

Trey looked down at the papers, slowly reading over the forms. His hand patting lightly on Ralts’s head to calm himself.

Name.. ok. Age? 17. Born.. December 15th 2003. Place of residence… Don’t have one. We’ll just put the club for now since they already have Kristine’s address.. Phone number… I don’t have a phone… Trey thought trailing off, then looking up at Officer Jenny, somewhat embarrassed.

“I um.. Don’t have a phone,” He said pensively.

Jenny looked a little confused but quickly put on the face of a professional again, “It’s alright, just put your place of employment again for that. Oh!” she jerked slightly then looked down her face turning to something hard to read for Trey, “I’m not sure how to ask this. Do you have someone you can place as your guardian? You are still underaged and need one to sign your papers.”

Both officers scratched the back of their heads. Officer John speaking up first.

“Ah… that just made things more complicated.. Oh I’ve got it. Here, first fill out the Rescue Form first kid,” John said a big goofy grin on his face.

“Sure..?” Trey answered looking over the form.

He quickly went over it, after placing his Unknown level hieroglyphic signature on the consent form, handing it back then confirming the contents of the Rescue Form.

The form asked for similar things that he wasn’t quite sure how to answer as he didn’t have some of them. Trey didn’t have a place of residence. He didn’t have a legal guardian. He didn’t have a phone number for contact.

John noticed the confusion and moved to stand next to him.

“Ok don’t worry, just fill out what you can. And then we can get around the rest no problem,” John said.

Officer Jenny's brows raised then her eyes perked up as if a lightbulb lit up.

“You’re going to have him register as a League Trainer? Why? The season is halfway over,” she asked.

“Yeah but League trainers have autonomy over themselves, so he doesn’t technically need to have a registered legal guardian. All he has to do is pay the League Fee for the year and register for the circuit,” John said, tipping his nose up, obviously proud of himself.

“Fee..?” Trey said, parroting John.

“Don’t sweat it, I’ll pay for it since it was my idea. I’m not going to sponsor you like a Lab trainer but I’m fine with Shellgon’in out the initial fee. Rest of the stuff like potions, pokeballs, pokefood, that’s on you. Fair?” Officer John said, putting out his hand.

Trey smiled, truly touched by the police officer. “Fair,” Trey said, shaking the man's hand.

After a few more hieroglyphic signatures and some mild bullshitting from Trey. They had finished by a little after 12:30.

Officer John headed out first, saying he would submit the forms and bring the copies to Trey’s work later in the day once they were processed. His League Card would have to be mailed to him later, once he had gone to the League office for his formal registry and picture.

Exiting with Officer Jenny, a pokemon Trey had never seen before passed them in the hallway.

The only reason Trey had even noticed the Mon was because of its fiery appearance that had startled Ralts and brought up some negative emotions for both of them through their connection.

The Mon had bright red arms and ponytail coming from hits gold and black armor, its fierce red eyes tracking Trey and Ralts’s every move as it passed by them down the hall behind two other Officers.

Officer Jenny and the pair gave waves to each other before Trey asked, “What Pokemon is that? I’ve never seen one in Kanto before.”

“Oh him? That’s Armarouge. Don’t let his steely exterior fool you. He’s a sweetheart and probably the most honest pokemon and person I’ve ever met. He’s originally from Paldea,” Jenny explained as they made their way to the front door.

“Paldea? I haven’t heard of it. Is it a League sanctioned place?” Trey asked.

Jenny nodded. “Yup. Paldea has recently entered the official Pokemon World League and to start friendly political relations has offered to send certain pokemon to the other regions. You’re going to see a lot more of Armarouge from what I’ve heard. They sent at least one to every major city in Kanto and Johto to help the Police stations. As far as I’m aware they are going to be breeders coming over to Celadon for the big July Convention this year. Being a new Pokemon Trainer you might want to check it out.”

Trey chuckled, almost turning into a sobbing grimace as he listened to the words Pokemon Trainer.

My wallet is going to have a thousand year war with me at the rate I’m spending money… He thought.

“I’ll have to pick up some stuff well before that…” Trey said, giving a pat to Ralts’s cap. Her cooing in reply.

After a bit more small talk and back and forths on the new Pokemon that might appear during the convention they reached the parking lot.

“- I even heard that there are going to be some of the gym leaders and Elite Four flying over, but that’s only media hype for now..” Jenny said deflating.

Wow I didn’t take her for someone to be that enthralled in the League… Trey thought as he walked alongside her to the car.

“There is this Gym Leader named Iono who just came onto the scene and I’ve been following her since her first live stream! She’s an electric type trainer and I love her. I have her same exact outfit at ho-” Officer Jenny stopped after she realized she was bringing out her phone.

Her face turned slightly red as she coughed.

“Ahem. Right, let’s get you to the hospital ASAP.”

Trey just chuckled uncomfortably and nodded, pretending he didn’t hear that this grown woman had a gym leader’s outfit at home in her closet.

Sometimes I don’t understand people. Trey thought, as he opened the door and sat down in the back of the car for the second time, Ralts looking up questioningly at the confusion she felt through their psychic thread.

“Alts…?”

The drive to the Saffron Central Hospital was very quick and uneventful. At least that was what Trey wanted to say had it not been a life or death situation.

Officer Jenny was, to say the least, a very aggressive driver compared to even the speeding Officer John.

But Growlith sitting in the passenger seat seemed to be used to it as he barked in joy at every sharp turn, and siren flip she did to get past traffic.

If Trey had to guess he would have thought she was trying to see how many times she didn’t have to step on the break.

“Ok! Here we are Saffron Central!” Officer Jenny announced as she parked the car, turning around with a wide satisfied grin.

Ralts slumped deeper into Trey’s lap as she finally had a moment to relax from her stiff fright of near death she had battled with during the ride with a low whine.

Trey also gave a sigh of relief as he thanked Arceus that he had lived another day.

Officer Jenny opened the back door, Trey exited with Ralts in tow in his arms.

“Now here is something from me,” she said, placing 500 credits into his hands.

Trey looked at it then back at her.

“Is this hush money?” he asked.

“WHAT?! NO!” she yelled, her face turning red, as she started laughing awkwardly, “This is for the expenses you are going to have as a trainer. Pokeballs and food are not cheap. And don’t you fuc-” she started with a raising hand, before Trey began laughing.

“I get it! I get it! I won’t say a word, Iono who?” Trey teased, then put on a endearing expression as he tightly held the money, “Thank you Officer Jenny, I promise I will pay this back and definitely won't forget it.”

Jenny slapped Trey on the arm, “If I so much as get a hint of you returning that money, I’ll arrest you on the spot!” she laughed, “Now I don’t want to keep you waiting. But make sure to get a phone soon and register it. You’ll need one so we can keep you updated when we find the man who set the fire.”

Trey nodded and smiled, waving to the Officer as she drove away, Growlith’s head and tongue hanging out of the side window.

But underneath, Trey’s emotions were boiling. Hatred, revenge, anger and loathing, all swirling under the surface of his work smile. The only one privy to it, a small Mon who looked up at him concerned from his arms.

“I’m sorry sweety… I think you should walk for a bit, my head’s a mess right now..” Trey sighed as he looked down at Ralts.

Ralts shook her head and cooed unimpressed, her refusal coming through their connection.

Trey smiled genuinely now, happy they had made such a strong tie in such a short time.

“Alright fine, you win. Let’s get inside then I need to see who survived..” Trey said sheepishly, his face dimming.

Taking a short walk to the entrance of the Hospital with Ralts in tow, Trey looked upwards to the Red and White H on the front of the large building. Many people and hospital trucks lining the outside, but surprisingly none moving in and out of the lanes.

Trey took in a deep breath as he looked at the small few steps leading to the doors.

“Haha… I’m not sure if I’m ready to see who it is. I feel so nauseous and guilty. The knot in my stomach just keeps getting bigger…” Trey winced, but still forced himself to put one foot in front of the other as he climbed the short steps.

But each step felt heavier, and each raise of his foot seemed to force his leg higher and higher.

By the time Trey had reached the top of the small 5 step flight of stairs, he had become soaked in a cold sweat. The realization that every step brought him closer to seeing the reality of what had happened tonight.

The cold reality that everyone except the two in the hospital had survived.

A soft whine came from Trey’s arms but the muffed bussing in his ears wouldn’t allow him to hear it, as his breathing quickened and rasped.

“S.r? He..o .ir?” a voice called out.

Trey snapped to attention as the voiced raised.

“Hello? Sir! Are you alright? Do you need help?” the woman asked.

She wore a standard white gown and held a clipboard in her hand, her jet black hair pulled into two buns behind her small white nurse cap.

“I-I um. I’m fine. I need to see two people who were admitted here? A boy and a girl, from the fire in the Orphanage?” Trey said, doing his best to calm himself. His sleeve wiping away some of the sweat on his head.

“Are you sure? You look pale as a Gastly!” she asked again, worriedly.

“I’m sure. Please just take me to them,” Trey pressed.

The woman hesitated for a moment then nodded, using one of her hands to usher him inside.

“Right away. Please follow me to the desk then, I’ll have one of the receptionists check you in then,” she answered.

“Thank you, Miss..?”

“My name is Jenna. It’s nice to make your acquaintance,” Jenna replied, a bright smile on her face, then she looked down to Ralts, noticing the inevitable burn marks on her cap.

“Oh no! What happened to your poor pokemon?! You should admit them right away!” she shouted, not waiting for an answer and taking Trey by the hand, pulling him inside through the automatic doors and straight to the desk.

“Miss Joy! Please admit this Ralts to the infirmary! There are multiple burn marks on their head and they seem to also be malnourished,” Jenna said hurriedly.

The nurse behind the counter, had pink hair tied into a similar double bun, a white nurse cap on her head. She looked up quickly to the nearly hysterical Jenna.

“My, what in the world is going on now Jenna?” she asked, sitting up from behind the desk, her hand going to the side of her face as she tilted her head.

A stout and round pink pokemon in a similar nurse cap waddled out from behind the desk as she moved, a bright smile on its face.

“Chansey!” the pink and white pokemon cheered, then moved closer to Trey, its face turning to one of concern as it spotted Ralts.

Trey finally caught his footing and put a word in at the bombardment of questions.

“Wait, wait, wait. Please hold your Ponyta! I would like to admit Ralts, yes. But the burns are not recent so please calm down. I appreciate your concern Jenna, but please let my hand go,” Trey said chuckling wearily.

“Oh! My apologies..” she said, recoiling her hand.

Nurse Joy moved in close and bent down to look at Ralts in Trey’s arms.

“Ah I see, these are already partly scared… What in the world happened? You aren’t responsible for this are you?!” she asked, her brows furrowing as she looked up from Ralts to Trey.

Trey quickly shook his head.

“Absolutely not! I would never harm Ralts! This was done by that asshole -” Trey started then a glare forced him to cough and quickly change his verbiage, “By her previous owner.. I was able to rescue her and just submitted the papers…”

Nurse Joy pursed her lips and quickly shifted her weight from one foot to the other before answering.

“You rescued her today?” she asked, to Trey nodding, “Then who submitted the papers for you?”

Trey answered quickly, “Officer Jenny and Officer John both helped me with the process, they said it would take some time to process though, and I still need to visit the League Office for some of the finishing parts of the registration.”

Nurse Joy seemed satisfied as she put her attention back to the squirming Ralts.

Trey looked down as Nurse Joy looked at her, inspecting some of the marks and looking at her cap.

“It’s ok sweety, she’s a nurse who's going to help you.” Trey said.

“That is unusual, most pokemon are normalized to the care of centers by her age,” Joy said, her hand hesitantly moving towards Ralts, but Ralts was having none of it as she turned and pulled at Trey’s shirt, her discomfort spilling over their connection.

Trey tried his best to calm her, placing his hand on her head, but she still whined softly in his arms.

“Her age? You can tell?” he asked curiously.

“Yes, she is about the size of a young Ralts, she still has a few more inches to grow so I would like to put her age at about 2 years old or so. And I would assume she would have been to a center for regular checkups by now,” Nurse Joy said, recoiling her hand, and frowning.

The Nurse’s face told all Trey needed to know about her care. The bastard Charles had not even taken Ralts to a Pokemon Center since she was born, or at least not enough for her to feel comfortable.

“It’s ok Ralts, she's going to help you get better ok? I have to go visit my friends, but I will be right here when you are done, I promise,” he said looking down at the mon in his arms, her red eyes pooling tears underneath her green cap, “I want you to get better ok? And this is how we do it. Will you go with the nice lady for me?”

Trey tried his best to comfort her through their connection, pushing his feelings of trust and wanting for her to heal over. It only slightly calmed her as she still cooed, but turned nonetheless to the Nurse.

Nurse Joy cracked a smile at the scene, “She seems to trust you very much, you said you only rescued her today? My, that’s quite something..” she mused, “Do you have her pokeball as well?” she asked, as Chansey walked over a tray in their hands.

“I-i haven’t had a chance to purchase one for her. The previous owner smashed her original pokeball,” Trey said, slightly embarrassed.

Nurse Joy and Jenna’s moths opened in aghast expression for a moment, with Nurse Joy recovering first.

“Well, that is no problem. The hospital can provide one at a discount, do you have insurance or are you a registered Trainer with the League?” she asked.

“I just registered today, so the papers are not quite final,” Trey replied instantly, knowing there was about to be quite some troublesome questions coming his way.

“I see, please come to the desk and we will get it all sorted then while Chansey takes her to the examination room,” Nurse Joy offered, “Now Jenna, please go on your way, Nurse Savanna is going to be struck with anger you’ve rarely seen if you are caught distracted again!”

Jenna’s face paled like a ghost before she nodded, bowing shallowly to Trey and running off without a word.

“Now, have you been to the hospital before?” Joy asked, sitting down behind the counter.

Trey moved over and placed his elbows on the desk.

“I have not..” he answered.

I haven’t even been to a normal check up in years either… Hard to afford regular check ups when all your money goes to other things.. He thought, sighing.

“Then we will have to get some basic information. Name, place of residence, phone number, birthdate and some other miscellaneous things,” Nurse Joy rattled off, as she typed into the computer.

And here are the troublesome things… Trey chuckled wryly.

“My name is Trey, and I have no place of residence. It burned down today…” he said, his face turning dejected.

Nurse Joy raised a brow as she looked up.

“Whatever do you mean?”

“I live… Lived at the Orphanage, at least until it was burned down today. That’s why I’m here. For Ralts and to visit the two survivors of the fire.”

Nurse Joy held herself back from saying something, but quickly typed something into the computer.

“I do have some patients that match that,” Nurse Joy, said loking up from the screen, “But do you have a way of verifying yourself?”

Trey grimaced, he had nothing. The police station only required his statement as he wasn’t charged with any crime. So he had not thought of identification. He did not yet posses his Driver’s License nor did he have his League ID yet.

“I don’t but, I’m sure if you called Officer Jenny she can vouch for me!” Trey said quickly.

Nurse Joy sighed and placed a hand on her temples, “Why is she such an airhead..” she grumbled picking up a pink cell phone with a very small Happiny strap dangling from the side.

She took a moment to press a button for the speed dial and placed the phone to her ear.

“Yes. Stephany! You sent this poor boy here without any way to verify himself!?” she shouted loudly, “What do you mean you forgot! Don’t say oops, it’s your job!”

A few grunts and ‘hmms’ of affirmation later Nurse Joy hung up and finished her seemingly out of character conversation.

“I understand what happened now. I’ll have a nurse take you to their room. They were just released from the ICU, and are now in recovery. Don’t worry about the papers, I will take care of it when Ste-Officer Jenny returns,” she said, her face smiling but the emotion did not reach her face.

Trey nodded, and smiled nervously. Only waiting a few minutes before another Nurse came and helped him to the room.

Walking into the room, he surveyed it, seeing the curtain walls separating some of the empty beds. The lights brightly lit the white walls, and the his ears were filled by the surprisingly deafening silence that was only broken by the beeping of machines and occasional rolling of carts that passed the doorway behind him.

Trey looked down the row of the four beds in the room, the left empty with blankets and coverings folded at the end. On the right he saw the blankets splayed across each of the figures in the beds.

His heart began beating faster as he gripped his arms for the comfort of Ralts but realized that she was not there. Another pool of cold sweat began forming on his forehead. His breathing again becoming a mess as he did his best to walk forward, each step bringing down the reality of the situation once again that he had pushed to the back of his mind.

Each and every step the heavy world crushing haze of the image of the Orphanage burning in fire and smoke crept into his psyche. As he turned to face the beds, his shirt was soaked in sweat his breath was ragged, and he felt nothing but nausea as he covered his mouth with one hand, the other gripping the hem of his own shirt desperately at an attempt to calm himself.

But what he saw were two young children wrapped in bandages, one of red hair and one of black.

“It-it’s the twins…” Trey sobbed out as he looked at the two laying in their beds, divided by a blue curtain.

Both were mostly wrapped in white bandages, and covered with a mint green blanket. Saline and monitors hooked up to each of the small children.

Trey fell to his knees unable to take it, and broke down for the second time that day. Unable to bear the reality that, of the many children and the loving caretaker that called the Orphanage home, only the twins and he had survived.

“Sasha… Yuki…. I’m.. I’m s-so sorry….” Trey sobbed on his knees, his hands holding his head as the tears fell through the cracks in his fingers endlessly, the gasps for breath breaking up every word.

“I pr..promise! I’ll make… I’ll mak- make it right….!” Trey grit his teeth as he forced his head up, his eyes red but pointed.

“I’ll make him pay!”
