“Hyah!” I shouted out loudly as I let out a telekinetic blast from my left fist when I punched it forward. A soft ‘whomp’ sounded as the purple force shot across the distance between me and the boulder I had been aiming at. Only to miss. “Aw dammit!” I glared at the offending boulder. I’d swear it dodged my attack somehow. Crossing my arms I pouted and the urge to stamp a foot on the ground was almost overwhelming for a split second. If I hadn’t been hovering in the air several feet up I just might have.

My interface showed that I had lost a small percentage of mana from using my ability which is to be expected. I knew aiming wasn’t always easy but apparently trying to hit inanimate objects was harder than I thought. I wonder if aiming at actual monsters was easier? Did the system provide some sort of aim assist?

Since I was reincarnated into this world I had tried to work out its mechanics. So far it seemed to be very game-like in how it operated, reminding me of a lot of the popular MMOs I used to enjoy playing before I got sick. Even had a friends list for some strange reason, although it didn’t seem to have a way to send direct messages. Probably because we aren’t sitting behind a keyboard I suppose. Even if the UI does actually provide a digital keyboard. My brow scrunched up a little as I concentrated on the description of my ability.

[Telekinetic Pulse] Rank 1

A force of pure telekinetic energy is sent out through the casters hand/s causing blunt force damage. This is a ranged attack of up to 30 feet.

I stroked my chin in thought. I wondered if that last line about it being a ranged attack means I gain a disadvantage against hitting targets if they’re too close to me. I know some games I’ve played had a similar mechanic.

“All right!” I announced loudly and to no one in particular, while glaring at my nemesis. The boulder just continued to do bouldery things. “Let’s try this again. This time you’re going down buddy!” The boulder just bouldered on. “Nothing to say huh? I’ll show you!”

My wings made a humming noise as I zipped around and zoomed away from my target until the UI showed me that I was 20 feet away. I briefly wondered if I should land for better accuracy before shuddering at the thought. I even rose a little higher instead. It was against my instincts to land if it’s at all possibly unsafe.

Since I was left handed I took aim with my left arm, I made a fist as I drew my arm back.

I let out a loud “Hyyy-aaaaah!” As I activate my ability while concentrating on my target. Once again purple light rushed out of my left arm at my target, and missed.

“Aww, no fair! You dodged it again somehow, I just know it!” I shouted at the unresponsive rock. I pouted before rolling up my non-existent sleeves. Lifting up my left arm again, I took deep steadying breaths before activating my skill without any cool moves on my part. The purple light briefly lit up my hand before pulsing out of it at my target again, but this time it successfully hit the boulder.

“Woohoo!” I exclaim excitedly. “Let’s go and see what sort of damage I did to you”

The boulder didn’t seem to have even moved slightly from where it sat as I examined all of my hard work. Barely even had any scuff marks for my effort. I sighed at how little I had done to my greatest enemy. I glanced at the little time display in my UI. “Oh well, it’s still early. I have lots of time before anyone will look for me!” And with that, I got to work.

***

I hovered near the boulder that I had been using for target practice and glared at it. It had ignored all of my attempts at moving it with the abilities I had at my level, that is, all of one. Pulling up my UI I looked at my character sheet.

My heart always did a little flip flop of pleasure whenever I saw my gender as female in my status screen but I then pouted as I stared at my level then sighed. I was 50 years old but still only at power level 8, which I guess I equate to being similar to level 1, my gamer brain couldn’t help but protest this development (or lack thereof). Unlike some of the reincarnation stories I had read before I kicked the bucket, I didn’t start getting most of my memories back until I was nearly 50. Which seems to be the fairy equivalent of becoming an adult. Although if I think about it made some sense at least considering the agelessness of the fairies. That wasn’t just some kind of racial that didn’t mean anything at the end of the day.

The fairies in this world are very much the young at heart tricksters that were written in a lot of earlier popular literature and folklore. They (or I probably should say we) were the small creatures that never seemed to grow up. It was one hell of a shock realising that not only had I reincarnated but I had been reborn as a fairy. I guess when I was still alive the first time, I was expecting to be a human noble or something along the lines of one of the popular tropes if I had ever reincarnated. At first I was just too happy to have been born as a girl to care about being a fairy. Not to mention being a fairy was a lot of fun. Being able to fly was the best.

Unfortunately I had started getting a little bit bored of living in Fairy (yes the name of the magical forest we lived in was literally just called Fairy, the same as our language). Being with the other fairies was fun but for me, having been a human in a previous life and around the time I had my 50th birthday I had actually started remembering that previous life, it was starting to get a bit boring. All day every day we played games and ate fruit. On the rare occasion a mortal was found wandering in or around Fairy if they had somehow gotten past the natural and magical barriers, those mortals were pretty much tormented until they managed to escape. The smarter ones offered sweet foods to their tormentors in exchange to be led safely out of Fairy. Thankfully most fairies have short attention spans so usually get bored of it before any permanent harm comes to the lost person. Fairies might be tricksters but they weren’t normally evil.

I sighed again before shaking my head then glared at the boulder and shook my fist at it. “I’ll get you one of these days..ow!” I declared, before kicking the smaller boulder next to my nemesis. A flash of pain went through my leg from the impact and to my surprise the boulder wobbled and then moved until it could only be considered rolling, all the way down the steep cliff-like incline. And with a terribly loud noise it crashed into a tree at the bottom, destroying most of the tree above the stump before spinning to a stop. Suddenly a massive creature burst out of the forest below, roaring aggressively at the offending boulder, which looked almost like a pebble compared to it and swatted it away. I couldn’t help but flinch at this casual display of strength. I may have let out a little gasp just loud enough for it to glance up at me. With my sharp eyes I could see it’s eyes settle exactly on me. It let out a growl as I zipped behind the boulder. Surely with my ninja skills it didn’t see where I went right? Yeah I didn’t believe that either.

Loud footsteps could be heard and felt through the ground, even the boulder I was hiding behind. Wait… I can fly! I thought just as I popped my head over the top of the boulder, leaning on it slightly as I checked to see how far away the beast was, and the boulder shifted forward. I immediately let go and flew up high as the bear was still making its way up the side. Digging it’s powerful claws into the dirt, the ground shaking with each impact. I watched with eyes as large as dinner plates (Fairy sized of course) as my old nemesis charged bravely down the cliff side at my new nemesis, picking up recruits along the way. Eventually the roar of the mini avalanche out roared the roar of the giant bear creature. Dust, dirt and little pebbles scattered every which way, obscuring the battlefield from my view.

Undead Dire Bear has died Power Level 320

Ding!

Congratulations, your power level has increased to 103

Just as I was about to high five myself for my winning strategy, I heard someone clear their throat behind me. “And just what do you think you are doing Azalea?”

I turned around to see that there were 3 Fairies hovering in the air now before me. I addressed the one that had her hands on her hips while she glared at me. “Oh, um, Hello Mother,” I greeted her sheepishly, trying to appear as innocent as possible.
