Woooooooooooooooooooooo. The war horns sounded through the whole town, alerting of the incoming demonic attack.
Silver walked through the wall overseeing the enemy formation and organized his men accordingly.
Mages were powerful but their range was short, because of this they were mainly used in two ways. First as a special unit that moves around the battlefield supporting other units.
The second was in the front lines, the one the enemy army had opted for.
Because of this, Silver stationed his own mages on the walls and moved his archers to the ground behind the walls.
A siege is inherently a battle where the attackers attempt to breach the walls by any means.
Once inside, units can unlock the gates for the remaining army to swarm in, eliminating the advantage posed by the walls. This was the worst case scenario for any defender.
When mages were present, they changed the nature of the battlefield completely, defending the walls becomes a battle for the supremacy of the elements that make out the walls. An earth mage could simply open a hole in a wall, this would result in a tremendous disadvantage for the defenders. Because of this, when the attacker mages were present in the front line, defenders had to station mages in the walls to counteract their magic.
If two mages tried to impose their will on the same element, the element will remain static until only one will is left. Commonly, this resulted in two mages continuously imposing their wills in the element, slowly exhausting their mana. Once one of the mages ran out of mana, the remaining mage would then take control of the element.
Because of this, the earth mages with the most mana capacity were stationed inside the walls for wall protection duty, while other offensive mages were station on the walls to eliminate the enemies.
In bigger cities this wasn’t necessary, as the defensive mages were substituted by magic batteries that powered magically enchanted walls. These walls, unlike normal ones, couldn't be altered until the mana reserves in the batteries were exhausted.
These cities also counted with an additional magic barrier that protected the cities from above, stopping powerful warriors from jumping over the walls.
However, Dorhem was simply a small town, it didn’t count with any of these defenses, they would have to do with mages protecting their walls and their own soldiers to stop anyone who jumps over.
“Bring the oil barrels here! Come on! Move your asses!”, Silver yelled orders, preparing the battlefield. The enemy army was small and didn’t seem to have the firepower to go through the walls, however there was something that filled Silver with a sense of dread.
Silver directed his eyes towards three demons in particular in the back row. One of them, a blue skinned yoma with a pair of wings sprouting form his head, the demon who often taunted him from high in the fortress who he assumed to be the commander of the army.
At his side were another yoma, a green skinned woman with a long tail, and finally an abyssal standing over two meters in height. This last one, was by far the most worrying. Abyssal were incredibly powerful demons who were famous for ravaging battlefields on their own.
Because of their unlimited stamina, they could keep fighting forever. Records of abyssals destroying towns single handedly came to Silver’s mind.
The two yomas were riding on a carriage with a big wooden box. He wasn’t sure what the contents were, but the uncertainty filled him concern.
He sighed, trying to get rid of the stress that was currently holding his body hostage. He turned to his side where a woman with a big pointy hat was awaiting orders.
“Miss Ember, I will need you to take care of the Abyssal, you are the only mage with enough fire power who can get rid of one. If you are not able to defeat him on your own, please make time until our offensive mages are free to support you.”
“Aye sir”, Ember saluted, putting her right hand on her heart. Despite her playful tone, at least her gestures were professional.
Witches were blessed with immortality, as their souls didn’t reside in their bodies, even when devoured, they could be brought back to life quite easily. Because of this they were always sent to do the most dangerous jobs.
“Endo, you will support the mages, if the green woman comes, you are on lizard duty.”
“Sure”, Endo nodded. His body was resting against the wall in his usual relaxed mannerism, however, he was wearing a serious face that was rare to see in him.
“Sir Barth, please stay on the gates, if the enemy breach the walls, they will attempt to open them from the inside”

“Understood”, the royal guard nodded
“Good, we are ready.”, Silver overlooked the battlefield waiting for the enemy.
“It’s your move”.
….
“They have some weird box with them”, Adrian reported to Rodderick. The two of them were overseeing the fight from the safety of the Earl’s office. The Earl himself and Edeus were at their side.
Rodderick couldn’t use his magic to reinforce his eyes so he could only see the mass that formed the armies. Because of this, he had to rely on Adrian to tell him what was going on. He was explaining to him about the difference in demon species.
Rodderick was particularly worried after hearing the explanation about Abyssals.
“I’m guessing miss Ember will be in charge of fighting the abyssal. It’s a shame you can’t see anything form here Rodderick, this is a great opportunity to see how mages fight in a real war, experience like this isn’t easily handed without the need to risk your life”, Adrian lamented their inability to join the fight.
Rodderick looked up towards Edeus with pleading eyes. He was worried for the safety of Ember, she was incredibly durable and supposedly immortal, however her enemy seemed to be just as terrifying as her. If Edeus joined the fight maybe he would be able to defeat the Abyssal without the need for Ember to get hurt. But the old mage remained stoic and simply watched over the preparations for the fight.
“They are starting”, Adrian said with a serious tone.
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. The war horn sounded over the town of Dorhem once again, this time, signaling the beginning of the battle.
Everyone in the Earl’s office watched with wide eyes as a single figure ran towards the wall and jumped over them with ease as soon as the fight started.
“Already?!”, Adrian shouted in shock, the abyssal simply ran through the front line and jumped over the walls, landing heavily on the other side with a resounding thud.
“As I thought…”, Edeus who was more familiar with warfare expected the abyssal to charge ahead. After all, his resistant body was perfect for the job of crossing the enemy defenses and attracting their attacks.
“WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH”, the abyssal let out a deafening roar. Windows shattered under the force of his voice, while the people inside their barricaded homes screamed in horror.
The abyssal, Blain, stood inside Dorhem, muscular legs and long, sharp claws emanating a dangerous aura. Its skinless body displayed his hardened muscles with a deep shade of red, inside the empty eye-sockets of his skull resembling a dead cow shined his red eyes, glowing with an otherworldly light as he scanned the streets and alleys. His eyes stopped at the figure of a woman with a pointy hat pointing her staff at him.
“Hello there. Shall we start this competition in which we test which of our bodies is the most resistant? Kihihihi”, Ember cackled maniacally.
