“It’s been 10 days since a woman’s body has been found inside the ruins of the house she shared with her late fiancé a few years ago, but the latest observations show that she had stopped living there soon after. The reasons of her death have been concluded to be suicide as she died of a bullet in the head and a gun has been found a few centimeters from her body. The same day as an entire building has crashed in the outskirt, just in front of the now-infamous massacre of 15 journalists by a group of terrorists. Experts are still looking for the reasons of such an event but some measures shall be taken promptly in order to protect citizens…”

I sigh.

Listening to the news through earphones, I wait patiently in the hall that the door opens.

Sleep deprived and anxious are my two defining traits, so being alone in a place with no escape, waiting for a terrifying woman to let me in and scold me for minutes that seem like hours are reasons to make my legs shake and bite my nails.

TADPOLE

Hearing some commotion behind the door, I quickly push away my bangs from my eyes and stand straight like a soldier in attention.

Finally, it opens and a tall man gets out.

He looks at me with a tired smile. “She’s furious.” He says.

“Yeah, I know.” I articulate.

“Good luck.” He finishes while walking away.

I look at him slowly leave the hall and go up the stairs, then I take a deep breath and knock on the door.

“Come in.”

I slowly open. “Excuse me…”

“FASTER!” She shouts.

I instantly increase the speed and end up inside the office of the scariest old lady the sea has ever met.

“Fucking finally.” She says with her deep voice that gives me shivers.

In her usual kimono, she’s reading a newspaper in one hand and smoking a cigarette with a holder in the other. She doesn’t even need to look at someone like me.

With her beautiful silver hair tied in a bun thanks to two hairpins, the beauty of her face didn’t age outside of a few wrinkles between her almond eyes. Even though she doesn’t wear a lot of make-up, none could tell she is far above 80 years old, if not for her deep vibrating voice.

Sitting behind her vintage polished wood desk that is crowded with papers and folders, the office looks like the cabin of a 19th century coal boat, with the smell and color of copper surrounding it.

Some boat items like a sextant or globes are placed here and there as decoration, and the cloud of smoke almost makes it seem like we stepped in another world.

Despite the anachronism that should imply her appearance in such a setting, she doesn’t seem out of place to me. Maybe because her kimono’s desaturated colors go well with the background, and her elegance seems somehow similar to the kind of ladies with huge hats and corsets we could meet at that time.

That being said, she’s closer to a mafia boss than a lady from overseas, and her mannerism are reminding me of those old geisha movies.

“I was waiting for your news.” She says without raising her eyes.

“I-I’m sorry for taking so long.” I cough.

“Stop jiggling like an eel out of the water.” She raises an eye to give me a look that stuns me like a thunderbolt.

I straighten myself. “Y-yes… I have sent them an invitation through our contact.”

“That’s good, but you know that’s not what I’m interested in.” She takes her cigarette to her mouth and breaths. The smoke in her expiration adds to the suffocating fog that settles in this room. “The building.”

“Ah, yes. I may have found someone who might be responsible for this. If we can find them then we might interrogate-”

“May? Might? You didn’t find anything!”

“I-I-”

“Not bringing the awaited news in time… How am I going to deal with you?” She put a finger under her mouth.

I already knew that I would disappoint her, but this judgment is too quick! It’s unfair!

I want to scream it but that will only make the situation worse!

“Wait a minute, I do have something!” I panic and look for the phone in my pocket.

Yet, at the next moment, I can feel a blade next to my throat.

From the shadow behind the door, one of her personal guards sneaked to me in an instant.

“Take your hand out, slowly.” They say.

The old woman raises a brow. “What a ridiculous attempt.”

I see… They thought I was going to take a weapon out of my pocket.

“This is just a misunderstanding, I was about to take my phone out.” I pronounce, pulling my hand slowly out of my pocket.

The old woman seems amused and bites on her cigarette holder. “Oh? And what are you going to show me?”

And thus, the shadow disappears.

As simple as that? They are so old school.

They should be aware one can do many things with a simple phone that they can’t do with a weapon.

Well, whatever. I take a deep breath.

“I have a picture of the person who might be the culprit.”

“Again with your ‘might’? I want results. Is this the culprit, yes or no?”

I run a hand through my hair to wipe the sweat on my forehead and pull my bangs that fell on my eyes up again.

With an awkward smile, I finally conclude: “There is 91% chance this is the culprit, so if we round it up… Yes.”

“Fine, show me.”

I approach the desk and focus to not choke on the smoke, branding my phone in front of me.

Looking at the picture for a few seconds, she then looks at me and bursts into laughter.

“HAHAHAHAHAHA NO WAY!! WHERE DID YOU FIND THAT?!”

“I did my investigation toward the different shops and restaurants in the neighborhood, and this is the only one that suspected a criminal had entered. Of course, since they’re in our territory, they didn’t contact the police. What’s incredible is that the culprit was peacefully ordering pizza while drenched in blood after having committed a great crime against our company.”

“Amazing, incredible, beautiful job! TADPOLE, you’re this month’s best employee! You’re also much cuter with your dark hair out of the way! Your eyes shine like little pearls, it’s the first time I can see them!” She exclaims.

Slightly wondering why this small thing deserved such acclamation, I ask.

“Do you know them?”

Still jiggling from the laughter, she takes the old school telephone she keeps on her desk and starts dial on it.

It’s the kind with the wheel that you have to turn to dial a number, impressed that this antiquity still works, I make a “wow.”

“If I know them? Their sibling is one of the most researched criminals in the underworld! You can’t fool eyes like mine, this person is their exact copy!”

Taking back my phone, I frown to give a closer look to this picture.

Despite the terrible quality from the security camera, there is nothing truly extravagant I notice from this person. Maybe I had some intuitive expectations to what a researched criminal should look like, and it was nothing as boring as this.

Wearing a mundane black suit, polished boots and slightly curvy hair in a ponytail, I can’t help but think that if they weren’t drenched in blood from head to toe they would seem like a perfectly normal citizen.

That being said, I can’t help but notice the look of an imbecile in their eyes.

“STOP CALLING ME AN IMBECILE!” I shout.

“THEN STOP EATING THE CHOCOLATE THAT IS RESERVED FOR MAKING THE COCOA, YOU SWINE!” Answers Abhi.

“IT’S NOT MY FAULT IF IT’S SO DELICIOUS AND TEMPTING!”

“You both shut up, I’m trying to explain something here.”

“I CAN’T LET YOU RUIN OUR ECONOMIES!!”

“YOU’RE NOT EVEN DRINKING COCOA, YOU DRINK COFFEE, YOU COFFEE DRINKER, ISN’T THAT WEIRD FOR A CHILD TO DRINK SO MUCH COFFEE? IT’S WEIRD, RIGHT BOOBIES?!”

I got punched in the belly so hard I’m crawling on the ground.

“Finally. Quiet.” Says Red Force.

“It much better. When quiet.” Adds Blue Force.

“Unfair…” I pronounce, finding difficulty to breathe.

“TIAN SHUI you didn’t have to punch her…” Sighs Boobies.

“Violence… Is the way of the weak…” I articulate in Mandarin.

“Dogs who can only bark like you don’t understand human language.” Responds Blue Force.

“So, can I finally explain our mission?” Asks Boobies with a hand under her chin.

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

“Y-yes…”

“Alright, first of all, I hope you’re not seasick, because we’re going to stay on a boat for 3 days.”

“I’m staying here, though.” Abhi pouts.

“Naturally.”

“What are we do on boat?”

“It’s really simple, there is a very famous jewelry auction, held once a year by the well-known Japanese company Houseki, on their boat to promote the minerals they found in the ocean, it’s called the ‘Sea of Stars.’ And this year, they’re holding it around this island. The fancy pancy people who are invited will embark from Tanumm’s port in 3 days and will have a 3-day cruise in the Pacific Ocean, participate in the auctions, do social stuff with their other fancy pancy friends and make fancy pancy alliance… I don’t know do rich things with rich people.”

“Wait, how are we going to get in?”

“Really simple!” Boobies says with a smile. “I have an invitation!” She exclaims while showing the mail she received on her phone.

“A-are you sure it’s not a scam?” I pronounce.

“I’m not as dumb as you.”

“I don’t get all.”

“Me too.”

“Basically… We’re going to steal jewels.”
