Winter in my homeland was dreadful.

But unlike the kids my age, I always played outside.

When it was cold, they played video games, when it was warm, they played video games.

I hated video games.

I went out in the blizzard with nothing more than a kimono, gloves and a scarf.

I loved the feeling of the fresh, freezing air entering my nostrils.

I could feel it go all the way to my lungs.

It was so early, but it was already night.

The light from my little brother’s window caught my attention.

He was playing video games.

I hated video games.

The smell of my mother’s hot pot was still strong.

I walked a long way in the winter forest.

Clouds formed when I breathe.

I heard there were bears in this forest once.

Glorious, powerful, magnificent gods.

I wished I could meet one.

I once peeked at my brother’s video games.

I think he was playing a hunter and shot a bear with a bow and arrow.

I hated it.

I hated video games.

I walked endlessly in this forest, further and further each day, in order to finally meet one.

The god of this place.

I finally reached the other end of it.

It was the first time I did.

A single flash of light shined above my head.

As I looked up in the clear night sky, another one showed up.

And many more, so many I couldn’t count them.

A rain of shooting stars, but it wasn’t the right time of the year…

Falling on my knees, I cried.

The shooting stars, coloured in a deep-blood red, disappeared behind the trees in a roaring thunder.

My scream covered the sound of bright but muffled alarms that were shrieking from where I came.

I knew perfectly well, despite my young age, that these were not normal asteroids.

And yet, I cried.

A hatred animated wail.

“PLEASE, GODS OF THESE LANDS, I WISH, IN MY LIFETIME, TO MEET THE GOD OF THIS FOREST!”

I saw the images of this video game on the snow.

This simple, worthless hunter, shooting down the god of the forest.

“I hate it! I HATE IT” I punched my vision but it was just snow.

This god, this magnificent, all-powerful god…

With my bare hands, I wanted to kill him myself.

This is why I hated video games.

I kept asking: “Why would you do something in a game that you wouldn’t do in real life?”

I was bitter toward this hypocrisy.

I hated video games for allowing more possibilities than my own life.

I wished I could punch this beautiful bear, I wish I could skin it, I wish I could cook it.

And thus, I would have proven that I am better than gods!

And just like that, as if the world was mocking me, a bear stood in front of me.

I don’t remember much of what happened afterwards, but I know that I fought with it.

We fought for a while, maybe for long enough that some people found me.

I don’t remember when exactly I noticed that the whole forest was on fire, and that the bear in front of me was dead, and in this mess, I somehow fell asleep.

“What the heck happened here? Was she attacked while fleeing? Did she kill the bear with her bare hands?”

“What a fucking monster.”

You’re right, I’m a monster.

Because only monsters are allowed to kill gods.

I wake up in my cabin after a short nap and grab my phone.

I received a single message from my sweet little brother.

“U OK?”

Suddenly, my eyes darken.

A normal person would probably think that this simply is a message from one sibling to another in order to know if they’re fine.

But from TADPOLE, it has a far different meaning.

We work with the ‘no news, good news’ policy. If one of us messages the other, it means something has happened. There is no reason for him to ask if I’m okay, which means he is the one who is in trouble.

My brother needs my help.

I jump off the bed and try to reach him with all of our communication devices.

They fail.

I grab my walkie-talkie and shout.

“GRAY ALERT, GRAY ALERT, ALL SECURITY OFFICERS ARE BOUND TO BE PRESENT IN THE SECURITY CABIN IN 30 SECONDS, OVER!”

The motherfuckers who dared to lay a finger on my brother will face the wrath of a monster.

I think I’m done.

I sigh and finish my 9th mug of coffee.

I didn’t close an eye of the night. Learning the C language wasn’t that bad, I feel like I’ll be able to improve a lot of my previous codes thanks to this knowledge.

Now this Makefile thing…

This is like Basic or something, what was the name again?

Ah it’s Shell…

Wait, can I even use this on my computer or do I need a virtual machine?

If I just look at what it does, maybe I can find some alternatives.

OK, so it looks like it’s compiling the files together and makes it into a binary program. This is so ridiculous, it’s been ages since programming softwares can do this automatically!

Alright, I’ll just copy this and…

‘Permission denied.’

Hmmm what?

‘Permission denied.’

‘Permission denied.’

What what what??? Where was there something like this?

There must be one of the options in the Shell code that doesn’t allow modifications from anyone but the creator.

It makes a lot of sense if you think about it, but I passed the entire folder through the control program I made and it didn’t detect anything of the sort!

I’ve been awake for so long that I hear a faint thunder from outside.

Of course, there are no windows in the computers’ room, but the weather report on my screen says it should only be a little cloudy.

Anyways, I finally found the line to edit the permissions, but…

‘Editing request, enter the password: …’

I open my password cracker software and sigh.

According to the password’s length, this could take a few minutes or a million years…

I’m surprised I got asked this only once, in the end, but it can’t be helped and heat my 10th mug of coffee.

I open an eye to the sound of my phone’s vibrations.

“Need a password.”

I only slept for 4 hours in this luxurious suite, but I get dressed and head to the living, where DIANA is soundlessly sleeping on the sofa.

I boil some water and lay my upper body on top of the couch.

“Hey DIANA, it’s time to wake up.”

“Whyyyyyy~” She mumbles.

“Abhi needs our help, we have to find a password.”

“And where are we supposed to find a password??”

I sigh and stand up to make some tea.

It doesn’t seem like Francesco came back here tonight.

“Someone in the staff probably has it. My best bet would be the boy.”

“Who?”

“You know, the one with the tablet. He said he was the first secretary or something.”

“I don’t remember.”

A brow rises. “What do you mean you don’t remember, you played the ‘Francesca Cavalcanti’ in front of him and the other woman who was a security guard.”

“Ahhhh~ I don’t remember the boy, but the girl was super hot.”

I frown.

“You want some tea?”

“Sure… In 10 minutes…”

She’s going back to sleep!

“Hey, come on!”

“Man, why do you wanna go now anyway?! This boy is probably sleeping right now!”

Well, that’s fair.

“We shouldn’t wait a second.”

I’m a bit worried because the longer we take for our mission, the harder it will be to leave.

With Francesco’s plan, it’s much simpler for our escape if the ship is still at sea than if it’s close to the port.

“Fine, but you owe me 3 croissants at the buffet.” She finally says.

After a few minutes of preparation, we are ready to leave the suite.

I open the door and two tall persons in dark suits are standing straight behind it, a man and a woman.

“Wha-” I begin to exclaim, but the woman shuts me up.

“Good morning, we are from the Bear faction of the security crew, we are terribly sorry for the inconvenience but we are bound to do a safety check in your cabin. Please move aside, we are allowed by direction decree to use strength in case of disagreement.”

“Oh, how convenient! Boobies, don’t you think they might know where the boy you’re looking for is?”

I roll my eyes and shush her.

“But of course, please come inside.” I say with a smile.

They enter and the man immediately starts looking around while the woman keeps an eye on us.

“I’m sorry Misses, but I have to search you as well.”

DIANA walks a few steps away: “Nope, no can do! Boobies?” She waits for my call.

I close the door, and look in her eyes.

I put my index on my mouth and say with a smile: “Don’t let them scream.”
