Around half an hour after all these revelations, the trio that was happily talking about random things around the bonfire, decides to leave the desert.

Both Nala and Nila jump on their feet, Nala gives a kick into the fire and covers it with sand to extinguish it, while Nila yawns to tears and uses his rifle to stretch his back.

Rohini, though, still smiles at me without standing up.

I walk toward her and ask, “What is it? Are you not moving?”

Grinning brightly, she announces, “My legs are sore, give me a hand!”

“What?!” I grimace. Without standing up, she’s almost as tall as me, how can I help her standing?

I turn to the two boys who don’t pay attention to us… They’re visibly used to her spoiled behavior and don’t want to help!

“Come on, give me a hand!” She insists, laughing. “I always wanted to get lifted by someone as strong as a soldier.”

She holds on to my kameez and doesn’t let me go.

I surrender and give her a hand. “I dropped out of being a soldier…”

She holds my hand lightly and pulls herself up without using strength, smiling radiantly at my confused face.

SHE DIDN’T NEED MY HELP AT ALL!!

“Why…?” I ask, dumbfounded.

“No reason!” She grins. “Oh, Nala! Nila! Don’t leave us behind!”

The two of them have indeed started walking away. Nala doesn’t even dare look behind, but Nila does and waves at us, a teasing smug on his face.

“Heyyyy! That’s not okay!” Rohini looks into my eyes. “We have to catch them up, Gini!” And then she starts to run behind them, our hands still holding.

Without struggling, I let myself get carried away. She only lets it go when we get closer and then she jumps in between them with her arms spread out to attack both of their necks at once.

But she doesn’t have enough strength to make them fall, even taken by surprise, and she keeps hanging like a pole that’s being transported on both of their shoulders, which makes them all laugh immensely.

Slightly slowing down, I watch them go for a few seconds, a little pain in my chest. I don’t know why … but looking at her face gives me mixed and confusing emotions.

This kind of chemistry these three friends have, I wish to be able to share something like this with her too…

Ah, is that envy?

Noticing something was off, Rohini turns her head and smiles. She drops from the twins’ shoulders and runs back toward me.

“Don’t you dare profit off of my turned back to run away! You’re our hostage after all!” She giggles, taking my hand once again.

“I…”

I begin to speak but get stunned by her direct physical contact. Last time I was the one who gave my hand, but this time she took it without asking. My face warms up and we walk without speaking.

We finally reach the camels that lay quietly on the sand, and I climb with Rohini as we did on the way to the dunes. Nala and Nila both joke about the fact I don’t have one of my own. The way they all became friendly with me so quickly makes me a little uneasy.

Driving slowly in the settlement’s direction, Rohini’s jasmine flower smell and soft humming are messing with my brain. So, when she finally starts speaking, I have something else to think about and keep my mind busy with.

“Gini, it’s absolutely vital that you keep contact with your boss, even if you said you surrendered and want to drop out. If you do what we say, you’ll be fine, okay?”

I nod quietly, and as to break the silence, I ask her a question I’ve been keeping to myself for a while. “How did you meet each other?”

“Me and them?” She responds, surprised. “Hm…” She ponders for a bit. “I don’t really remember… Our parents were very good friends, so we’ve been together since forever. They’re very fun to be around so I hope you can be friends with them as well. They are real twins but Nala is the one I’m engaged with, another reason why I couldn’t let that guy go, haha.”

What...?

“Engaged…?” I pronounce, short-breathed.

For some reason, this new piece of information pierces my heart and leaves me with nausea.

“Yeah, I don’t really like him like that, though. It’s our parents who chose this, so it can’t be helped. He knows this and I’m sure he doesn’t see me like that either. It’s just our duty or something.” She continues.

My head hurting, I need to find another topic before I faint. “Where are your parents now?”

“They’re dead, killed by the Brits. Ah but don’t worry, this has nothing to do with you. They were rebels and got betrayed by some piece of shit. It happened a few years ago. How about you?”

“They’re dead… I killed them…”

“Ah. Well, things like that happen.”

I almost thought she could have one normal reaction, but it’s apparently beyond her… Not that I dislike it.

“You’re not going to ask me why?”

“Nope. I don’t care actually. If you killed them, they must have deserved it.”

“I’m not sure about that…” I whisper.

A few seconds of silence are then broken by her serious tone. “You’re not a murderer, Gini. You may kill people, but you don’t do it for fun. Unlike me, haha, so that makes you a better person than I am! Isn’t that great? You’re such a good girl, Gini!” She exclaims.

“You’re right, I don’t like killing. I don’t dislike it either. It’s just something I do because I’m good at it.”

“I knew it! As I said, you’re a very good girl. Unlike me, I like to kill! I want to get revenge for my parents. I’ll slaughter these pigs, and I’ll laugh so much while doing it. It’s going to be a real pleasure! Ahh… I can’t wait…” She moans.

Her delirium makes me smile wholeheartedly.

We continue to talk peacefully until we reach the crossroads that leads to the settlement. Rohini asks her camel to sit. Nila, who jumped off from his, walks toward us.

“This is where we must part. You’ll have to stay in the settlement for tonight. Our boss doesn’t trust you enough to come with us yet, but we also can’t leave you alone, so Nila will watch you as a punishment.”

This is also convenient for me. I still have unfinished business in the settlement, and the tracker in my body watches anywhere I go. I need to find a way to get rid of it before leaving with them.

Nila sighs. “This judgment is so cruel.”

“Your fault for being an idiot!” Nala shouts from the back of his camel.

I agree to the decision and jump off without Nila’s help.

I give a look to Rohini who smiles brightly as always. “Have a good night, Gini. We’ll see each other tomorrow!”

I wave silently and watch her camel stand up and turn around.

“I can’t wait to speak more with you!” She laughs before driving away.

My heart aching a little because of this parting, I turn around slowly and notice that Nila has been watching me with high eyebrows. I have a bad feeling about this…

The awkward situation makes me blush a little and I walk quickly toward the settlement. He runs to catch up with me and look at my face again.

I walk faster, running away from this weird guy and he starts running behind me, shouting. “Wait, wait, wait, Gini, you, by any chance, do you, do you like Rohini?!”

My head turns red and I freeze.

He catches up to me and continues, out of breath. “I’ve been, watching you, for a bit, you and Rohini, and you seemed, you seemed…”

WE SEEMED WHAT?!

I can’t bring myself to say anything!

His respiration slowing down, he explains. “I’m pretty good at noticing these kinds of things. I don’t think it’s weird either… I’m not afraid to say it if it’s just the two of us, okay? I’m also like that!”

LIKE WHAT?!

I shake my head and feel like running again, but my legs are still frozen.

“Wh-wh-what do you mean?!” I finally let go.

He takes a few seconds to think before speaking. “I say this because I trust you, okay. I don’t know why exactly yet, but I can see that we are kin. You shouldn’t speak about it to anybody around here, but I know some people like that from the city too… Well, what I mean is…”

“Is…??”

Blushing a little, he puts a finger in front of his mouth. “I like men, okay?! Don’t laugh!”

My bewildered face is stuck and I can’t seem to be able to laugh even if I wanted to.

“What?!”

“It’s not that weird, okay! Well, yes, it is weird around here. Don’t tell anyone okay?! I trust you about this; now you have to tell me too!”

What do I have to tell him???

“What?! Are you not aware of it, yet?!” He slaps his own face. “Wait, maybe we can talk about it a little bit. See, you’re supposed to be around that age where you’re interested in love, don’t you think so? How old are you actually?”

When did this guy become so talkative??

“I don’t know… Around 12.”

“See, 12!” He points at me. “I’m 15, same age as the other two, but that’s not the point!” He shakes his hand. “Have you ever been interested in anyone? Any boys?”

This little situation went from awkward to shameful to kind of funny for some reason, and I seriously try to respond.

“Not really… Not before…”

“NOT BEFORE!” He shouts. “WHAT ABOUT NOW, UHH?!”

My face burns again. “I’m not sure…”

He laughs. “Well, I can tell you because it’s super obvious. You’re totally into her! And you’re lucky cause she’s into girls too!”

“What?!” This information makes my heart race.

“Don’t tell her I told you, though! She’s going to slice me up alive!” He grimaces.

We start walking again.

“What about being engaged…?” I whisper.

“She told you about this? Well, these guys didn’t choose it, it’s our parents who decided for them. Lucky me I got away without anything like that! For the moment…”

“Did you not tell your parents?” I ask naively.

“NO WAY!” He shouts. “You really don’t understand, do you? I’ve seen on the internet that this kind of thing is okay in some countries, but here it’s not! You have to lay low or leave!” He smiles suddenly. “We plan to change this, though.”

“Is this why you keep shouting?” I make him notice that we’re very close to the settlement and he brings his hands to his mouth. I think about what he said last and wonder. “Is that why you want to liberate the country?”

“Ah no, not at all.” He speaks in a lower voice. “It all started with Rohini’s parents. They came from a country where people are free and couldn’t bear seeing us in this state, but-.”

His voice cuts as we perceive the figure of a woman who is standing at the entrance of the settlement.

She also notices us and starts walking menacingly toward us.

“Who is this?” Nila squints his eyes, then suddenly straightens and takes a step back. “Well, it’s time for me to go, it was a pleasure…” He prepares to fly away, but I catch his robe.

“I’m sorry but Rohini gave you the mission to watch me, so you can’t go.” I pronounce, mercilessly.

“No, please, Gini, you have to let me go, no please, noooo!!!” He wails.

I look at him with cold eyes and a lifeless smile. “You’ll have to bear this fate with me…”

The woman grabs Nila’s neck and pushes me toward her. “WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU DOING WITH HER AT THIS HOUR, YOU DAMN IDIOT!”

It is Ishqam in her night clothes, holding a wooden rolling pin in her hand with a furious face. She menaces to slam it on Nila’s face.

“Auntie, please! I’m sorry, Auntie! It’s not what you think!”

“What am I thinking, then? Prove me wrong!” She shakes him up and down.

“We didn’t do anything to her! She was curious and I kept a watch all the time! Please don’t hit me, Auntie, we won’t do it again!”

“How many times did I tell you to not bring anyone with you during your dangerous expeditions in the desert!! Don’t you understand that a child needs to sleep?! This one can’t even speak! What did you make her do? Was she your bait or something? Do you want me to smash your head on the floor?!”

“It’s okay, auntie.” I pronounce, holding her dress. “I’m fine as you can see.”

Ishqam sends a furious stare to Nila and then lets him go. “You’re lucky this child is kind!” She exclaims.

“Thank you, auntie, thank you.” Nila adjusts his robe. He picks up his turban that fell on the ground and reveals beautiful short night-black hair, and wipes the sweat on his forehead.

Ishqam turns around and takes my hand. “Come on, Gini. It’s time to sleep.” She sighs. Noticing that Nila is also coming with us, she adds exasperated. “Why are you coming too?”

“I’ll be sleeping in the village tonight…” He says, with a stressed smile.

Ishqam makes an ‘eh’. “Do as you wish.”

Looking back at Nila, I can’t help but smile immensely at this situation.

‘That’s what you get for messing with me earlier!’ I think proudly.

Nila stares at me exasperatedly and makes sure that we enter the cabin safely before looking for his own place to sleep.
