Chapter 22: Interlude

“What’s going on?!” 

“S-Stay away from the door! Don’t look!” 

“Is it true, what the Conductor said…” 

Amidst the panicked shouts and cries, Rasputina squeezed through the crowd of horrified passengers ahead of everyone else and spotted a familiar figure at the front. “Machel, what happened?” 

“Your Grace? Why are you here?” The ashen-faced Wagon Lit conductor hastily blocked her path. “You mustn’t enter, this isn’t—”

“Move!” she demanded, pushing him aside. Behind him was the connecting door leading to the first-class wagon-lits. Without hesitation, she threw the door open and rushed into the aisle. 

The first thing that entered her vision was a champagne flute toppled over on the floor, its spilled contents seeping into the rich velvet carpet. Bemused, her gaze slowly moved down the gas-lit hallway. 

And Rasputina froze. 

Theo, who had caught up beside her, sucked in a sharp breath. “Fuck me.”  

Normally, she would have replied with a joking ‘sure’. But she was too stunned to even react to the unimaginable sight of a body crumpled on the floor—with a glinting silver blade stabbed clean through its neck. 

No. Wait. She recognised that black pleated dress. She recognised that face, that lifeless pair of golden brown eyes staring into nothingness. She…she recognised that silver blade lodged in her throat. 

It was the same knife used to open their champagne bottle. 

Cold realisation dawned on Rasputina like a bucket of frigid water suddenly being flung on her head. She couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t scream. 

Lips trembling, she only managed to gasp out a name. A name that seemed so familiar, yet so alien at the same time. 

“F-Florence…Nightingale?”
