After calling Brandon and giving him the location of the bar, I took it upon myself to carry Cher out of the restroom to the entrance- which was labor work.

My face was tensing up with each feeble step that I took as I supported Cher out of the restroom. Her arm was looped around my shoulder and I wrapped my arm around her waist, supporting her weight. Because of our height difference, Cher’s legs were basically being dragged over the floor.

“It’s time to lay off on those cakes Cher.” I grunted as I pulled her along. Cher only mumbled something under her breath in response before dozing off again.

I was finally arriving at our table and from the corner of my eyes I could see that many of our colleagues were passed out on their chair or on the table, their faces resting in the bowl of snacks. The rest of the colleagues, who were better drinkers, all gathered themselves around Mark.

‘Wow, they sure became really comfortable around him.’ I thought on seeing one of the male colleague slinging his arm around Mark’s shoulder roughly and using his other arm to hoist his glass of beer up in the air. Some of the beer sloshed out of the glass on to the table.

Or they are just really drunk, I thought, quickly changing my mind after watching that. Mark’s eyes flickered to me and I flinched at seeing those clear globes. He gave me a quick one over before nodding at Cher, wondering what I was going to do with her.

“Too drunk. Brandon.” I mouthed curtly in response, hoping that he could interpret the situation from that. He gave me a weariful look before diverting his attention from me to his whisky glass.

‘I guess he understood?’ Well, he can always contact me on the phone if something happens. He can even locate me with it if he wants to. ‘Whatever.’ I shrugged and toddled again.

Reaching the entrance, I let out a sigh of relief when I saw Brandon standing there with his car behind him. When he saw me, the skin at the corner of his eyes crinkled and his hand flew to his mouth, trying to contain back his laughter as his body was shaking.

He removed his hand from his mouth and used it to wave at me. “H-Hey April.” He snorted with a wobbly smile.

I glowered at him. “If you’re done laughing at my misery, then I would truly appreciate it if you would take this corpse from me.” I said between elaborated breaths as I pointed at Cher, who by now was lying on top of my back. I could feel my bended legs quacking under the heavy weight and the sweat were leaking from my pores.

“Sure.” Brandon laughed and with ease hoisted Cher up in his arms. As if she knew who was holding her, she snuggled closer to his chest, her lips curling up into a smile.

Leaning my hands on my knees, I took a few big breaths. Brandon chuckles lightly. “You good?”

Still catching my breath, I could only stick out my thumb upward, nodding my head.

“Do you need a lift?” He queried.

“Nah.” I shook my head before straightening my back, placing my hands on my hips as a support. “Mr. Moore is here too, so I will go with him.”

Brandon nodded and placed the sleeping Cher carefully in the car before taking his own place in the driving seat. He starts the car and then rolled down the window, sticking his head out. “You know where to find us if you need help.”

I laughed. “I even know how to spell your address backwards, go already before she vomits again.” I urged him with my hands, shooing him away.

He threw back his head, letting out a heartfelt laughter- waving goodbye before he pulled out of the parking lot. I kept watching in the direction where he drove off until the fuming gas of the car dissipated into thin air.

My body shivered, feeling the frosty evening air grazing my skin. “Shit, I forgot my jacket.” I cursed as I embraced myself, stroking my hands up and down my arms vehemently to sample some heat.

I was about to turn around and go back inside until my eyes caught a glimpse of the Manhattan riverside. “Wow.” I gasped in amazement at the view.

The soft light of the waning moon speared down from above, bathing the surface in silver. Stars of the galaxy were reflected like a mirror on it, like a thousand diamonds blessed with an inner ice. The soft ripples of the calming stream were like a siren song- bewitching me and pulling me to it, forcing my noodle like legs to move. My vision got disorientated and I could feel my body swaying left to right.

Now that I think of it, I am pretty wasted myself- despite Mark interfering with my alcohol intake. Whenever I would ask for a certain drink and if that drink had a high alcohol dosage, Mark’s face would scrunch up in distaste, shaking his head; refusing to buy it for me. He would only buy me the weak alcoholic drinks. I was so pissed that I just let him get me a bunch of those weak alcoholic drinks and then drink them all n, so that I somehow still can get wasted. And I guess that worked.

The streets were now filled with people who were hopping from bar to bar, like vampires enjoying the nightlife. You could smell the harsh scent of drink of them, but also from me. I know it, and so does everyone else. They can see me struggling to keep my balance, and I know I’m struggling to keep it. It was like an out-of-body experience. My brain was signaling my body to move properly, but whether my body was obeying was a different story.

But I didn’t care. I was only focused on going where the siren song let me to. Or was that all in my head and am I not hearing a song at all? But that can’t be, such beautiful song must belong to a siren.

‘Hmm?’ I looked up unfocused, squinting my eyes at the traffic light. Is it green? Can I go? The colors in the traffic light kept flickering and swirling around, transforming themselves into a gigantic ball of colorful clump.

The funny figure brought giggles to my face, and I started strode again as the figure became completely green. The magical river was now closer to me as I entered the park.

“Wow.” My eyes were twinkling with wonder as I gasp, pivoting as the trees that were scattered around the park were enclosing on me. I kept on squealing and giggling when suddenly a hand shot out, yanking me behind one of those giant trees. I yelped, suddenly confronted with Mark’s cold eyes and angry expression. He pressed my back against the tree trunk.

I blinked, surprised. How did he get here so fast? Did he teleport? I gasped inwardly. He’s a wizard!

“Why the hell are you all the way out here, April?” Mark hissed into my face. He sure is a moody wizard.

Normally in this type of situation, I would respond by reacting apprehensively with caution, but my alcohol-rotten mind could only focus on one thing: his minty breath. Does his breath naturally smell like that, or does he use some type of product?

“Smells good…” I muttered to myself.

“What?” Mark scowled, placing his fist against the trunk; leaning in closer. “Stop being so cryptic and tell me why you’re out here. Didn’t I tell you to stay close to me? Do you want to see me get angry-”

“Not this again.” I groaned as I started to message my temples against the soaring headache, ignoring the severity of the conversation. I poked the space between his eyebrows with my hand and made circular motions; in an attempt to make the folds disappear. “You’ll get permanent wrinkles if you keep scowling like that.”

He narrowed his eyes at me and leaned in a tad bit, taking a whiff.

“Hey!” I yelled, pushing his face away. “Don’t you know it is rude to smell a lady without her permission?” I pointed warningly at him.

He folded his arms in front of his chest. “How drunk are you, kitten?”

I shrugged with an exaggerated frown. “Who knows?” I said and quickly added in disappointment. “I still know who you are, so I am obviously not drunk enough.”

Mark stared at me for a moment before lassoing his arm around my waist. I was already too far-gone to even notice. “So why did you come here?” he asked.

He will laugh at me if I say that I was following the siren’s voice. I stood on my toes, bringing my face closer until the peak of our noses were touching. Surprised, he stilled his movement. “I like your eyes.” I said as I peered deep in to those deep sea-colored globes that seemed to resemble the river behind us. Or were they greenish-blue?

Mark’s lips quirked up into a smile and he wrapped his other arm around my waist, bringing me closer to his chest. “Oh, do you now?” He purred.

“Uh-hu…” I drawled out in a daze, still trying to figure out what color his eyes were. Something that passed by Mark caught my attention. “Oh crap, look at that!” I yelled as I pointed at something behind Mark’s back while continuously slapping him on his shoulder with my other hand.

Mark twirled around ready to face the something that I pointed at, pushing me behind his back. He followed the line of my finger to a swan fluttering in the river.

Scowling, Mark turned back around, looking at me with an aggravated expression as he raked his fingers through his hair. “Kitten…” He exasperated and me in a drunken-state didn’t care and instead broke out in a beaming smile; my eyes gleaming with excitement. “Isn’t it beautiful!?” I screeched.

Mark’s eyes widen before his face-features soften. “Yes, beautiful.” His eyes, that were filled with adoration, weren’t aimed at the swan when he said that. He brought his hand up and pushed a loose hair strand of mine behind my ear. “So mesmerizing, beautiful.”

My lips parted, and a red hue appeared across my face. The intensity of his eyes choked me up, leaving me breathless. I guess those alcoholic drinks were stronger than I thought because the beating sound of my heart is only getting louder, almost turning ear deafening.

His eyes fluttered to my lips before looking me in the eye again. Tilting his head, he inched closer, and my breath hitched. If I wanted to, I could push him away, hit him or even turn my head away, but instead I found myself closing my eyes- meeting his lips halfway.

Maybe it was because my brain wasn’t working from the alcohol, but the morals that would normally fill my thoughts to keep reminding me that Mark was a murderer and that he was bad news were gone.

My heart that was working perfectly was only swelling with affection. In that moment, our kiss was passionate, sweet, and it filled my body up with warmth that wounded around me like a safety blanket. From all those other times that he had kissed me, this was the first time that it didn’t feel wrong- it felt right.

Mark pulled back, breaking the kiss. He chuckled lightly. “We should get you wasted more often if it means that I get to kiss you without a fit.” I covered the bottom side of my face with my hand, trying to hide my flushed face as I placed my hand against his chest to create some space between us. “Shut up,” I grumbled and spun around, facing my back to him. “W-We should head back to make sure that everybody gets home somehow.” I stammered.

The moment that I stomped away, I stumbled forward as my sense of balance was still off. Luckily, Mark was there to catch me in time.

“Oops, I guess I have no choice but to guide you to avoid any accidents.” He said, reveling that I had no other option except to lean on him. I shot him a glare. “How aren’t you drunk.”

He shrugs nonchalantly. “High tolerance.”

Great. I grumbled inwardly.

Back at the bar, I detached myself from Mark. He scowls disgruntled and before he could say anything I promptly said, “I need to go to the lady’s restroom.” I really wanted to freshen myself up before we leave and I also really need to sober up.

“Be fast.” He said, and I nodded, marching my way to the restroom all the way at the end of the hallway. As I was about to enter the restroom, I got called out.

“Miss.” A waiter popped out of nowhere, giving me a fright. “Y-Yes?” I sputtered.

He bowed his head and then presented a whiskey that was placed on the tray. “A drink for the lady.” The whisky was fizzing with bubbles similar to a carbonated drink. I eyed him skeptically. “But I ordered nothing.” My voice freighted with cautiousness as I took a small step back.

The waiter smiled calmly. “The gentleman who just came with you ordered it for you.”

My lips pulled up into a gentle smile. “In that case, I will take it when I comeback from the restroom if you don’t mind.”

“Of course, not Miss.”

Nodding at him with a smile, I entered the restroom and as soon as the door closed behind me, my smile fell away like a discarded cloak. I ran to the sink and pulled out my phone, my fingers typing away as my heart was thrumming against my chest- head, clouded in fear.

Me: “Mark there’s something wrong.”

Without a second to waste, Mark replied.

Private Number: “What’s wrong?”

Me: “A server approached me- trying to give me a drink saying that you had ordered it for me.”

I waited for his reply nervously for a few seconds.

Private Number: “April, I’m serious- do not get out of the restroom I’m on my way right now.”

“Already snitching on me, I see.”

Letting out a gasp, I snapped my head up from the screen, looking at the mirror to see the waiter standing right behind me.

‘I didn’t even hear him come inside’. The sudden shock of the man appearing out of nowhere made me tense up my muscles, feeling the color being drained out of my face.

“April!” The color in my face slowly came back hearing Mark from the other side of the door, but that relief was a short-lived once I heard the clicking sound of the doorhandle going crazy but the door refusing to open up.

“Shit!” The clicking sounds soon turned in to banging ones; Mark’s fists colliding with the door repeatedly. “APRIL!” Mark roared.

A bunch of keys hanging from a key-chain dangled in front of me. I felt my lips tremble seeing the mechanical smile of the server being reflected in the mirror. “You should have taken the whiskey when I offered it to you.”

Only an inaudible sound came out of my mouth before he placed a damp cloth over my nose and mouth. The drugged scent penetrated my nostrils, and I felt myself go limp. Before my consciousness faded to black, I could hear vaguely the sound of gunshots.
