Jake and Zoe looked at each other awkwardly, like people who had been set up by their friends and had nothing to talk about.

“So, time travel, huh? What do you think?” Zoe took the initiative to start the conversation.

“It’s interesting?” Jake offered. Zoe cocked an eyebrow. ”Interesting?”

“Alright! It’s a dream come true. Time travel, teleportation, this stuff has always pulled me. I used to read comics and books about this stuff, and suddenly it’s happening. It’s like I’m in a Men in Black Movie!”

“A Men in Black movie?” Zoe asked, with a confused look.

We really need to get you updated on the pop culture, otherwise, you won’t get any of my references. Basically, Men in Black is a movie about guys in black suits that fight aliens, travel through time, and erase their identity to save the world from shadows.” Jake answered. “Maybe Liam has some good movies. The dude travels through time. He’s bound to pick up some good movies.”

Jake’s eyes widened. Time Travel! “Do you know what this means?! No more cliffhangers! No more waiting! We can simply go to the future and pick the next movie as soon as we are done with the previous one!”

Zoe’s eyes widened too and she smiled broadly ”Of course! There are so many movies whose new parts must be already released!”

Jake smirked. ‘She's a fellow nerd too,’ Jake thought. “ Do you read books too? Because I’m going to the future the first chance I have and pick up some new ones.” and from there the conversation went through all the topics Jake loved. They talked about Star Wars and The Lord of The Rings and they talked about friends. Jake was surprised to hear that she was waiting for the eighth season of friends, which was going to be released in late September.

“Oh my god I can see the eighth and the ninth season of friends already” she had squealed when Jake told her that the ninth season was already out.

They had talked for more than an hour and Jake was pretty sure he was crushing hard on her. She was gorgeous, loved to watch superhero movies, and loved to read books. The first chance Jake got, he was taking her to see the Iron man one. ‘It could be a heck of a date’ Jake thought.

“I was hoping ‘The Winds of Winter’ would come out soon. It was supposed to come out in 2015. Now, I’ll just go grab it.” Jake was telling her.

“That one is part six, right?” When Jake nodded, Zoe continued. “I’ve only read the first two, ‘A  Game Of Thrones’ and ‘A clash of Kings’”

“Ah, it looks like the two of you are getting along” Liam cut in, walking back into the room in a different attire.

“What exactly are you wearing?” Zoe asked him, as Jake tried to take in the sight in front of him.

Liam was dressed like a sailor. And not a regular sailor, no, he was dressed like one of the sailors you would see in a world war movie or one of the Pirates of the Caribbean. He was wearing a white tunic, ankle-length breaches, and a hip-length gray vest. He was wearing a large belt at his waist, with a thick strap. He had a sheathed sword in his hand.

“It’s time for your training,” Liam said.

“What are we training for? The Halloween party?” Jake questioned, raising his eyebrows.

“Your training!” the old man replied. It’s time for your training. So suit up!”

                                                                ***

As Jake stepped out of the room, dressed in the clothes the old man had given him, he found himself enjoying it. It was strange because Jake had never enjoyed dressing up.

‘It’s not the excitement for dressing up, rather it’s excitement for my training. My time travel training.’ Jake thought excitedly.

He was dressed in a similar costume as the old man. A white tunic, a set of ankle-length breaches, and a blue hip-length jacket. As he picked up his sheathed sword and attached it to his belt, he felt like a pirate.

He unsheathed his sword and swung it around, raising it in the air and slicing an imaginary enemy. He felt amazing.

Liam had given both him and Zoe a sailor's uniform. He couldn’t wait to find out Zoe would look in hers.

Jake stepped out into the dining area and moved towards Liam.

“It fits you well,” Liam said, nodding in approval.

“Thanks,” Jake replied, acknowledging his compliment with a nod. “Is Zoe still getting ready?” He asked.

“She should be out soon,” Liam said. And as if she was just waiting for the cue, Zoe stepped into the large room.

“Wow!” Jake said as he felt his breath leave him. She looked gorgeous. As if the uniform was made to fit her.

She was dressed in a similar outfit as him except hers was made to fit the female form.

She wore a white tunic which formed a beautiful contrast to her auburn hair. Her belt tight around her waist highlighted her large bust. Instead of breaches like him or Liam, she wore a long ankle-length skirt. She also wore the same flat-soled sandals both of them wore.

“Do I look alright,” Zoe asked, though she had a slight smirk on her face after seeing his stunned expression.

“You look amazing,” Jake replied, an awed look on his face.

Zoe’s face went red at his honest reply.

“You don’t look so bad yourself,” Zoe complimented him.

“Thanks,” Jake smiled at her.

“Now, if the two of you are done flirting with each other let’s get started,” Liam interjected in a teasing voice.

Both of them blushed red and glared at the smirking face of the old man.

“What are we going to do?” Zoe asked Liam.

“Right, time for your briefing! Ok, we are traveling to a merchant ship in the early 17th century traveling across the Atlantic bound to sink in the Bermuda triangle. The mission will be explained once we get on it. Any questions?” Liam asked his tone all business-like.

“Yes, we are directly traveling through time? Is there no physical conditioning of the body? No mental exercises to prepare us for the experience?” Zoe questioned, concern dripping from her voice.

“There’s no specific physical or mental preparation for time travel. Anyone can do it. Sure, it’s tiring, both mentally and physically, but the only cure for that is experience and rest.” Liam replied. “Anything else?”

“Um, yeah,” Jake said. “Why this particular situation? Why not something else?”

“Ah, good question! The reason for that is the butterfly effect,” Liam answered, excitement evident in his voice. “The ship is bound to sink and so whatever we do on it will have no effect on the timeline because no one will be alive to inform anyone about our presence. That means this is a perfect situation for our training because even if you make mistakes there will be no major consequences to history.”

Liam suddenly turned serious. “But you have to remember that just because this training will not have any major historic consequences doesn’t mean it’s any less dangerous. The people on this ship live during a time when pirates roamed freely in the sea, attacking any vessel they found. That means all of them are trained to fight and kill without remorse to protect the ship and its cargo. And if they notice that there are outsiders on the ship they will attack you. And probably kill you,” Liam warned them.

Jake suddenly realized the consequences of any potential mistakes. Even the most minor mistake could result in their deaths. He glanced at Zoe, seeing the same realization on her face.

“If it’s so dangerous, why are we doing this training?” Zoe demanded.

“Because the objective of this training is for you to learn to blend in. Remember, this is a large ship with a huge crew, so you have to blend in and complete your objective without being spotted. I will be nearby but you’ll be completing this training mission on your own. If you are discovered, I will do my best to save you and get you out of the situation.” Liam answered. “Anything else?”

“Just one more question. How are we getting back?” Zoe asked.

“Ah, right. The exit window. Ok, pay attention to this.” Liam’s voice was very serious. “Before you start a time jump it’s very important to set up an exit window. That means, you set the coordinates and the timestamp of the location you’ll be at when you complete the mission to open a return window. Now, at times, maybe your primary exit location has a guard or is inaccessible. That’s why it’s very important to set up multiple exit windows at various locations and with enough time between them to travel from one location to the next.”

“Now, if there are no more questions, let’s move to the time chamber.” and with that, Liam walked into the room.

When Jake walked into the time chamber, the first thing he noticed was a large computer set, complete with three screens, and a projector which showed up on a large screen on the opposite wall.

As he entered further, he noticed it was a big room, maybe as big as the dining room outside.

The room had a large indoor cylindrical glass chamber in the center with wires attached to it and a large funnel attached to its roof. He didn’t need Liam to tell him that this was the chamber where the real time travel happened. There were also two more rooms attached to the time chamber but they were closed.
“What’s in there?” Zoe asked.

“Those are the dresses and weapons of various time periods all through the timeline. Now, I will warn you once about this. No matter what, do not take the weapons to a time period before they were invented. You can take old weapons to the future but never ever take the advanced weaponry to the past. The waves that will create in the time stream will be catastrophic and potentially apocalyptic.” Liam warned both of them in a very serious tone.

Jake gulped. Both he and Zoe nodded, understanding the gravity of what he said.

“Alright,” Liam said, clapping his hands once in excitement. “Get in the glass chamber.“

Both Jake and Zoe entered the chamber while Liam fiddled with the computer.

“How are you feeling?” Jake asked Zoe, concern filling his voice.

“I’m alright. Nervous but excited. I can’t believe that I’m about to travel to the past!” Zoe said excitedly. “And you? You must be very excited.”

Jake nodded, a wide yet nervous smile on his face. “It’s a dream come true,” he answered, echoing his statement earlier. “I’m nervous but I definitely can’t wait to see the past.”

“Everyone ready?” Liam asked, entering the glass chamber and shutting the door.

Both Jake and Zoe nodded.

“Good, in sixty seconds the chamber will be flooded with tachyons and we’ll be transported to our destination. Brace yourselves, the timer will start soon.”

As they waited, Jake noticed a time starting.
