If you put a picture of yourself inside a locket, you could consider yourself.....

But what does one call the experience of being locked within a 'room' that's floating in the void?

Re: Author contract

Dear Opieaji,

We are sorry to inform you that your sample short story "The Character Inside a Void" didn't pass our editorial department's standards. We are therefore unable to sign a contract with you.

Best regards,

"Sigh, Ink Hazen was truly my last hope..."

The disheveled man leaned against the wall as he cluched the letter in his hands. Tears were silently gathering in his eyes but the man quickly blinked them away before they could fall.

The countless rejections and the dwindling zeros behind the man's bank balance slowly drowned his aspirations to be a popular author. After all, everyone was human and it would certainly hurt to be faced with a "sorry to inform you, but.. " each time he opened a reply from a publishing house.

The urgency for a "proper" job was never more apparent than the moment he looked inside the at the last 300 dollars in his wallet. He knew that it was time for giving up and making the hard choice to accept the reality of the situation: He didn't have the talent.

Sobs and cursing could be heard echoing in the tiny room. Perhaps the shattering sounds of crushed dreams and the unwillingness to accept defeat had attracted the attention of a diety. Gods feed off the faith of their believers to survive and it seemed the desperate man in front of him would satisfy that need.

THUMP

A heavy object fell from the bed when the man kicked it out of fury. A startled scream cut into the silence of the room once the man saw what had fallen.

A book lay with its pages open, and a quick scan of its contents caused chills and cold sweat to slither down the man's back. The ordinary and mediocre script on the page was currently flashing, appearing and disappearing as new lines were created to replace the old ones. Once a page was completely filled up with those flashing words they returned to the common font printed with ink and no longer flashed. But even then the man could feel a uncanny sense of unease the closer he got to the book. Curiosity killed the cat and every teenager's occupational disease was an love for discovering new things and stirring up shit when bored. Or at least the youth in front of the book loved to do the above.

His eyes quickly skimmed over the contents of the book on the ground as one hand held onto the shelf for support. His pupils dilated more and more the longer those hazel eyes of his read down the pages of the book. He knew it was a dangerous bet to make but the words inside the book made his heart race once again with hope.

[Once upon a time, Silas made a deal with a God. The God gave him a 'special' present, a book that told of his future along with opportunities to change it. The conditions were this: as long as he kept writing, he would gain points to alter his very own story! Magical powers, plot armor, romance... anything he's always wanted could be exchanged with using points...]

Suddenly the book flew up into the air and closed itself! Before Silas had any chance to cry out from the shock, the book had morphed into a blue screen similar to a system interface.
