Chapter 8: 8:

I let out a sigh of relief as I saw the
Lords start to leave the court room. The meeting with the King had gone well,
too well that I had suspicions that he had ulterior motives for accepting my
proposals. However, it didn’t matter, he would have his hands full soon enough
I had already planned to create a distraction but with Lord Caspian’s actions
earlier there was no need.

Vladimir and I were the only ones left in
the court room. He walked towards me and brought out a bunch of keys from his
pocket and released me from the chains that bound my feet and hands, I rubbed
my wrists after they shackles fell down.

“Thanks” I said with a small smile.

He looked at me with no particular interest.

“Follow me, I will show you your chambers”

I followed behind him, making sure not to
stay too close, he did just almost chop off my head a few minutes ago and I
wasn’t in the mood to give him another reason.

Despite the Castle being quite large, it
didn’t take more than a few moments before we arrived at a large red wood door
with two ivory handles.

“This will be your temporary quarters until
after your aristocracy ceremony, dinner will be delivered to your room this
night and tomorrow, you will assigned a handmaid to assist you get accustomed
to your royal duties”

“A handmaid?”, “Can’t I get a squire
instead?”

“How about you focus on not being a nuisance”
he spat back.

The aristocracy ceremony consisted of three
trials, purely of the King’s choosing but they had to follow the themes a
quest, the commoner had to go on a dangerous adventure of some sorts, a feat,
the commoner must achieve some grandiose action and lastly a test

Failing any phase of the ceremony wouldn’t
exactly be ideal given that my life is on the line and all

“Wow” I chuckled “Don’t tell me you’re
worried about me?”

“Don’t kid yourself boy, I just don’t enjoy
meaningless deaths”

“Meaningless?” I asked with a hint of
disgust in my tone.

“Yeah” he began turning back to me “I mean
you could be dying for nothing”

Dying for nothing

“Have you ever been to the rural towns in Valencia?”

“Of course, during patrols”

“I didn’t ask if you strolled past them, I
asked you if you’ve ever been there!” I yelled unable to hold my anger back “Eaten
a meal, slept in an inn, walked the grounds, taken in the air there, shared a
laugh with them”

“Of course not, I’m the Chief warrior of Valencia
I have more important things to do”

“Of course you haven’t, that’s why you have
no idea that people over there have died for less than nothing”, “From
starvation, disease, over-working even from the sports of some twisted nobles”

“Okay I get it, life is tough but you dying
for some childish dream isn’t going to bring them back or make their deaths
count for something”

“Exactly, dying helps no one so I have no
intention of dying, I will pass the trials and after that I do intend to keep
true to my word”

Just like in the royal Court, I didn’t even
see him unsheathe his blade but I felt its cool feel against my neck as blood
trickled gently unto it but I wasn’t fazed.

“Why is it that you carry this sword? Is it
to protect the King, the Throne or is the people of Valencia?” I asked with the
blade still resting across my neck. My question must have stopped him in his
tracks because he just froze.

I pushed the blade away from my neck and
closed the gap between us and stared him dead straight into his eyes.

“Before I came here you asked me why I did
it right?”, “It’s simple. I want to be king and one thing you’ll come to learn
about me is that I always get what I want”

I turned around and opened the door to my
chambers. I was too furious that I didn’t even take in any of the beauty that
the room had on display for me. I went straight for the bed placed in the
middle of the room and fell straight into it. I could feel the exhaustion of
the day taking over as I found it difficult to retain consciousness.

Did I just make the chief warrior my
enemy? guess I’ll just add him to the list then.
