‘It is time to wake up sweetheart’. I heard the voice, but I kept my eyes closed. The scene of the wolves ripping out my intestines was still fresh in my mind. I didn’t want to open my eyes no matter what, so I kept them closed as my eyes began to flood with tears. “I-I-I a-am s-sorry!” I didn’t know what I did in my past life to deserve so much pain, but I felt the need to apologize for my past self. The tears ran down my cheeks as my eyes were closed. I stayed there crying for a while until I heard a familiar rumbling sound coming from a distance.

I knew what it was already. Those knights were going to come and kill me. I didn’t care though. I just laid there with my eyes closed. The rumbling sound came nearer and nearer until it was close enough that I started to feel the instinctual fear of dying. I closed my eyes even tighter until the rumbling sound went past me. It kept going until it got quieter and quieter in the opposite direction from which it came. When I couldn’t hear the rumbling sound anymore I opened my eyes. I was greeted by the same sun that was bearing down on me when I first arrived in this world; Although, now it was a little lower on the horizon.

“What should I even do at this point? If I go to the forest I will probably just die again, and I don’t know if the town the knights came from will be friendly to me. Maybe I should just stay here after all? I wish I could use magic or something… wait this is a fantasy world? Maybe I will be able to use magic.” I hit my head with the palm of my hand. “Stupid!”

But how do you even use magic? How would one even go about learning magic? Do I have to feel something like mana? How do I go about feeling mana? I sat up and started to think about the concept. “How does one even feel something they have never felt before? Is it like having an extra sense?”

I sat with my legs crossed and entered the meditation pose. “Feel. Feel. Feel. Feel.” That became my mantra as I tried to feel something in the air perhaps. The only thing I could feel was the wind against my skin, but then I started to think about it. What if there is wind magic? I tried to grasp within my mind the concept of wind. I knew that the wind was full of particles. I knew that there were many things that composed the atmosphere. “If there is mana I wonder if it would be a particle?” I opened my eyes, and I swear I could see something in my vision that wasn’t there before. I narrowed my eyes at the tiny dots in my vision. They sort of looked like those tiny dots you could see sometimes whenever you closed your eyes.

They were all around me in different colors. The colors I could see were red, blue, green, and purple. I had no idea what any of the colors meant though. When I stopped trying to focus on the colors they would disappear from my vision. When I focused again they would reappear. “That is strange.” I found myself pondering what the colors could even mean. It could be that those were the colors of mana, but how do I use it? I tried with my mind to pull the colors into my open hand. Surprisingly, it actually worked. The tiny dots found a home on my hand, and with it I felt a warmth spread throughout my arm then to the rest of my body.

“This is weird, but maybe with this I could use magic!?” I tried imagining a small flame in my hand, but nothing happened when I did that. Next I tried imagining a drop of water, but again nothing happened. “Maybe I am not imagining it correctly?” This time I imagined a lighter at the tip of my finger burning up the oxygen above it. This time a flame did appear! Not! Nothing happened again, and I was beginning to get discouraged from ever being able to use magic.

“Why can’t I even make a stupid fire!” As I yelled out fire to my surprise a flame quickly appeared in the palm of my hand. “Does this mean… I actually used magic!” I shouted out. Then I quickly covered my mouth with my hands when I remembered the situation I was in. Remembering the situation I was in brought about a primal fear. Especially when I thought about those wolves. It also brought me a sense of urgency. I would need to master the use of magic. I looked up to see the sun dipping completely below the horizon as night descended.

With the night brought about the howling of those beasts. I resolved myself to learn magic that I could defend myself with as swiftly as possible before those wolves get here. I started to remember spells from video games. “Oh! What about a fireball!” As I yelled out fireball a tiny flame shot out of my hand and exploded on the grass, The explosion was tiny. Instantly, I knew that this couldn’t be used for self defense. “Well at least it couldn’t, at that size, but what if I imagined something bigger?”

I tried to imagine an even bigger fire. I yelled out “Fireball!” Then a basketball sized fireball shot out of my hands causing an explosion the size of the ring at the center of a basketball court. As I was being satisfied with myself for the explosion I caused I started to get light headed. Oh shit! I forgot about mana. I had no idea how much mana I possessed, but now that I am lightheaded how am I going to deal with those wolves?

I looked over to the forest in apprehension of what could come next. To my horror I saw eyes glowing at the edge of the forest. The only thing I felt was dread as I fell to my hands and knees and started to dry heave. I closed my eyes as I heard their growls, and then I heard them sprinting to me. I was terrified so I couldn’t do anything. I was just rooted in place. “Someone please help me!” I yelled out at the top of my lungs, but no one came. When I looked up the last thing I saw was the wolf in my vision before it lunged at me and bit into my jugular. As the warm blood started to flow out from the wound my body dropped on the ground as I started to convulse. Then I felt the wolves rip apart my flesh as I died a painful death.

‘It is time to wake up sweetheart’.

“AAAAGGGHHH!” I yelled out then I immediately got up and took off running down towards the road again. This time I ran in the opposite direction from where the knights came from. This time I ran towards the mountains. I ran and ran. I knew those knights would eventually come up this way, but I didn’t care it was the only direction I haven’t tried yet.

Just thinking about those wolves and knights had me running faster than I thought I would ever be able to run in my life. I ran until I saw a small house on the side of the road at the top of the hill. I ran up to the door and I started banging on it, but when no one answered I opened the door. I slammed the door behind me, and then I fell on my butt and leaned my back against the door.

“Grandma I’m sorry!” I didn’t even remember who my grandma was, but I felt a compulsion to say it as I sat there. I closed my eyes and tried to remember something that could help me, but nothing changed. I started to cry again, but then I heard a voice in front of me. “What the hell is wrong with you? First you bang on my door, and now you are just going to sit here in the entrance of my house crying?” When I looked up there was a woman in front of me, but her sudden yelling caused the pee to start running down my leg. “Please don’t hurt me!” I yelled out.
