Chapter 4: Chapter 3

The servants had been busy preparing the picnic for the afternoon gathering. A selection of the more robust rugs had been laid out on the southern lawn just beyond the formal gardens. A canopy had been installed, protecting the buffet picnic from the late summer rays. No expense had been spared on the laden table: a join t of cold roast beef; a joint of cold boiled beef, two ribs of lamb, two shoulders of lamb, four roast fowls, two roast duck, one ham, one tongue and a magnificent viel pie. This was accompanied by bowls of salad leaves and roast potatoes.

Back in the kitchen, Mrs Butcher ensured that baskets would be filled with fruit turnovers and cheesecakes. Bottles of ale, ginger beer, soda water and lemonade had been stored in large wooden barrels. Most importantly for Lord Horace, however, was that the giant silver teapots were filled to the brim.

As the guests arrived, they were welcomed with a glass of champagne and were directed to the terrace. Once assembled, Elizabeth came into the garden, overwhelmed by the guest's reception and was shocked to see her father, Mr Burton, standing in front of everyone directing her up on stage.

"My dear Lily, how beautiful you look on this special day." Mr Burton called, "I propose a toast; Elizabeth Burton, my beautiful daughter, is to be the captivating fiancee of the proudest man in Cornwall, Lord Horace Harvey-Kensington."

A tear welled in the corner of William Donnelly's eye.
