Chapter 36: Recovery

Khloe immediately gives her sister an imploring look making her chuckle "Let me see what I can arrange with the admiral, I don't think it'd be too big of an issue."

Struggling to get up, Khloe supports me with a smile. Reaching for my glass of lemonade I sniff the air only to nearly gag. "Okay… no, not a good idea"

A giggle escapes Khloe who immediately covers her mouth to hide a smirk "Want some milk?"

Rather frustrated I nod "Yes please, I hope this is over soon."

Smiling Zhloe looks up from her tablet "If it's like Felix said, it could take a few hours, maybe a day or two. But don't worry about dinner today as I made sure you'll like it."

Her thoughtfulness makes me feel slightly better and a faint smile forms on my lips while I look down and sigh. "This may sound strange, but why does Leone's disappearance affect me so? I still feel so strangely hollow."

Standing up she places her hand on my head "Genesis told us a few things about that. It's an incredibly complicated explanation, but as he said you could compare it to you missing a part of your spirit. That hollow feeling will heal over time."

Anxious for the answer to my next question I look up "Time?"

Giving me a pitied smile she nods "Days, weeks, months, maybe even years, it's different for everyone."

Coming back Khloe kisses my cheek "But when the going gets though, we're all here for you."

Grabbing her waist I pull her towards me and hug her tight "Thank you"

Smiling she pats my head and hands me a bottle "Here, drink"

Eager I take the bottle from her hands, rapidly take off the cap and sniff noticing it's milk. "Thanks" Taking a sip I immediately begin to purr, only to take a bigger gulp and purr louder. Despite feeling my hands and feet change I keep drinking only to hear the two of them gasp.

Confused I look up "What's wrong? I didn't drink that fast did I?"

Khloe immediately reaches to the drawer of the coffee table and rummages around before handing me a small make-up mirror. "I guess… That's what they meant with brand of the fallen"

Taking the mirror I look inside only to drop my bottle from shock "MY EYE!"

Immediately I reach to my right eye yet feel nothing different. "A-Am I seeing this right…? It… It's aflame?"

Baffled Khloe nods "Yes… They talked about a brand of the fallen, but I guess this is what they meant."

Perplexed I gaze at the golden yellow flame before my right eye. "S-So… this is permanent?"

When they nod I feel as if the earth could swallow me whole, tears fill my eyes and I can't keep them from rolling down my cheeks. As I keep staring into the mirror in disbelief, the tears just keep on coming. "Why… Why is this happening to me…?"

Khloe takes the mirror and places it on the table before sitting down next to me and holding me tight "I'm sorry dear"

Closing my eyes I just let my frustration come out in the form of tears while shivering in her arms.

A long time later, I finally begin to calm down and sit up to groom my paws and wash my face. That moment the door opens and recognizing the sound of his walking I realize it's Felix.

"Hey you're awake!"

Looking up with a wry smile I nod "Yeah"

"You okay?"

Once again I nod only to then shake my head followed by a shrug "Everything just… it's too much, I don't know what to do anymore."

Having walked towards me, he softly pats my head and smiles when I look up. "What you need to do, is dry those tears, take a deep breath and smile. Go on with your life, be who you want to be and do what you want to do. I know this is a shock and incredibly painful for you. But I know you're strong."

While a deep sigh escapes me I stand up "Then right now… I just want to run."

Smiling he nods "Then let's run"

Khloe nods as well "Indeed, let's run!" She grabs my paw and tugs me through the room and into the hallway, not slowing down for a moment.

"Khloe…!"

Giggling she looks back without slowing down whatsoever "No complaining!" Widely smiling she keeps running, dragging me behind her not stopping until we're outside where she drops herself backwards into the snow. "Run kitty run!"

Oddly calm I smile faintly and hunch down to kiss her forehead "Thank you"

Widely smiling she rubs my ear between her fingers "You're welcome love"

Standing back up I stretch my back, during which my gaze falls on a tree. Suddenly an urge to climb comes up and with a shrug I give in. Leaping towards the tree I reach the top of the twenty meter high tree in seconds."

"Hey! How's the view?"

Looking down I see a smiling Happy and once she sees me looking back she chuckles.

"It's okay, I honestly can't see too far because of the snow, but it's calming"

Her smile widens before she hunches down, makes a snowball and hurls it at me "Silly cat"

Evading the snowball I giggle and look up at the sky "Life sure is strange"

"It definitely is and Animus doesn't help"

Khloe sits up and giggles "Nope it does not"

Softly sighing I simply gaze into the distance and ponder about what I want to do with my life.

Silence falls and for a long time I'm just lost in thought. A while later the door opens makes me look down in curiosity seeing Danny "Hey you guys coming? Dinner is ready."

Thinking about food makes me oddly happy and purr. Leaping down the tree I land next to him with a squeal causing him to smile. "Feeling better?"

"A bit, still confused and rather lost, but as you all said… I can do anything I want right now. And for now… I just want to research Leone for who she was before became one of our deities."

Khloe smiles "Then let's head to the library tomorrow"

Felix looks up "Got permission then?"

She nods "Yeah, Zhloe just texted me, we got permission."

Smiling I hop onto her back making her giggle "Let's go!"

While we walk back to the living room I feel like being lazy and rest my chin on her head causing her to chuckle. A moment later we enter the living room where a lovely chicken smell spreads, instantly making me purr.

"Seems the cat knows what we're eating"

Happily nodding I keep sniffing the air "Smells delicious"

Zhloe chuckles "Then come sit"

With a nod I leap off Khloe's back onto the couch. "Mrrr Fried chicken" Seeing the boxes on the table I can't help but keep staring at it while nearly drooling from the fragrant smell.

Chuckling Zhloe sits down and smiles "I got you mildly spiced ones." She then hands me a box which I eagerly take from her hands.

Pulling off the paper lid I stick one of my nails into a piece and sniff. The smell is so great I can't help but purr incredibly loud.

"Dig in"

Squealing I immediately take a bite, the flavor fills me with joy and I quickly take another bite.

Khloe giggles and softly tickles my ear "Enjoy"

Smiling I nod and happily devour my chicken.

A few minutes later I've nearly finished the entire bucket before I place it back on the table.

"Full?"

With a nod I try to put the lid back on only to fail miserably.

"Don't worry, I'll wrap them in tinfoil and store them for tomorrow."

Kindly smiling at Danny I lie down on Khloe's lap who smiles "You really love my lap don't you?"

Giggling I close my eyes softly purring while dozing off.

Feeling a gentle stroke across my cheek wakes me up. Heavy headed I moan softly before yawning and curling back up into a ball.

"Hey cutie"

Opening my eyes I'm greeted by the ocean blue eyes of Khloe "Hey"

Her lips curl into a smile "How did you sleep?"

Sitting up on all fours I lean back to stretch my arms and tail "Deep"

Covering her mouth she giggles softly "I bet, you completely knocked out on my lap yesterday."

Sleepily rubbing my eyes I give her a baffled look "I slept the entire evening then?"

Kindly smiling she nods "and purred adorably but yes, you did."

Awkwardly giggling I avert my gaze and sit up "Sorry"

Shaking her head she sits up as well "Don't be, a whole lot happened so it's not strange you're exhausted."

Lost in thought I nod slowly before looking down and blushing brightly while grabbing the blanket to cover myself "W-Where is my shirt?"

Shrugging she giggles "Honestly, I have no idea. I put you to bed wearing it."

Winding the blanket around me I see something underneath my knee. "Oh… there it is"

Grabbing what remains of my shirt I hold it up causing her to burst into laughter. "Seems you undressed rather… wildly" Reaching for the shreds of my shirt she chuckles "Yeah… I don't have sharp enough nails to do this with."

Ashamed I giggle awkwardly before sliding off the bed wearing the blanket while I walk to the closet.

"Ehem… dear?"

Intrigued I turn around "Hmm?"

She smiles "you're gonna need a shower"
