Ruma held the small straw sandal in his hand and looked at it carefully as Qin Fei began to make another one. Both Xiao Bu and Ruma stared fixedly at Qin Fei’s busying fingers, so excited that they didn’t blink their eyes. As he finished the other straw shoe, Xiao Bu hurriedly got both straw sandals in his hands and ignoring the wound on his foot, put them on and took a few steps on the ground.

Qin Fei picked Xiao Bu up and pinched his little nose, “Don’t rush, it’s not done yet. You can wear it when it’s done.”

Xiao Bu was a little confused, “What else do you want to make?”

Qin Fei smiled, “Although the sole of the straw sandals is made to be fit tightly, it’s still easy to get some tiny stones and spikes through the small cracks. If you put a layer of animal skin’s pad on it, it’s not only soft and more convenient for walking, but also lessens the possibility of being scratched by stones and sharp thorns.”

Xiao Bu and Ruma were suddenly understood, Xiao Bu even threw his arms around Qin Fei’s neck and acted like a spoiled child, begging him to get the straw sandals done quickly.

Xiao Bu grinned happily and laughed straightforwardly as he ran out of the tent impatiently regardless of the injury on his foot, to show off to his little buddies.

After Xiao Bu had gone, Qin Fei saw that Ruma was still staring at him with amazement. He smiled and said “Do you want me to make it for you too?”

Ruma was a little excited, “With something like this, we can walk even further and we won’t be afraid of those sharp rocks. These straw sandals are really wonderful.”

Qin Fei smiled happily as he explained, “There are many kinds of shoes. Based on the material, there are straw sandals made of grass, leather shoes made of leather, and cloth shoes made of fabric. Based on season, there are flip-flops for spring and autumn, which are not too cold and not too hot; sandals for summer which are light, convenient and cool; and the cotton padded shoes for winter that are comfortable and warm. For climbing, there are climbing boots, for sports there are sport shoes or sneakers and inside the house you can wear slippers…”

Ruma’s eyes grew wider and wider, not waiting until Qin Fei finished talking, he grabbed him and said, “Qin Fei, teach the people in the tribe how to weave these shoes! Everyone will be very grateful to you.”

Qin Fei spread out his hands, “What I know is not much, but we can take our time to study and work on it together.”

Ruma’s face broke into a smile that could make the flower blossom. Just when he was talking to Qin Fei, Xiao Bu came back here by running, followed by some females who stayed in the tribe. Those females were really interested in what Qin Fei had made.

Qin Fei simply went out from Ruma’s tent and told everyone to bring more hay and he taught everyone personally. Everyone learned and took it very seriously. Although, at first the weaving was not as packed and fit tightly as what Qin Fei made, gradually they all got better in weaving it and a few of them even received such high praise from Qin Fei for the straw sandals they made. While everyone was excitedly making straw sandals, Qin Fei’s stomach suddenly grumbled as he looked at everyone and scratched his hair in embarrassment. Xiao Bu cleverly ran to Qin Fei’s tent and took the fruit he had delivered this morning and handed it over to Qin Fei. He wasn’t polite either to choose one and started to nibble on it.

Everyone was embarrassed to see that Qin Fei was so busy that he hadn’t eaten yet, but they didn’t want to leave it just like this, Qin Fei also didn’t mind, nibbling on the fruit while guiding everyone while they weaved it. After two hours of work, all the females and males who were left behind in the tribe, also the children and the elderly, had already had a pair of straw sandals on their own feet.

As he watched everyone walking around in the tribe with excitement, Qin Fei was also very happy and pleased with himself in his heart. Remembering that he had previously compared feet with Sa Lei the night before when they were bored, he took the hay next to him and began to make straw sandals for Sa Lei. As the females watched Qin Fei’s actions, they also thought of their loved ones who were out at the moment, so they began to work diligently on weaving their straw sandals again. The straw sandals became more and more refined and some of the females were even able to weave some practical and beautiful patterns on the tops of the straw sandals. Qin Fei praised the females once again, so if he was able to motivate everyone’s enthusiasm by just opening his mouth, then why not?!

Seeing that everyone had mastered the technical skill of weaving the straw sandals, Qin Fei asked a few of the females who were skilled to teach this skill to those who were not in the tribe right now. Because the males mostly went hunting, the males could just understand it in a simple way but the other females in the tribe should try to learn it. Qin Fei had a lot of plans when he heard that the tribes could trade with each other. If the tribes could weave more backpack baskets and straw sandals, then they would be able to trade it for other goods that they didn’t have.

The females were even more excited to hear his suggestion, as it meant that the females, not only could get the food by picking but also gain more benefits for the tribe. Everyone worked hard and even a few of the clever females asked Qin Fei if they could be taught some more things from it. Qin Fei nodded his head and taught them how to make straw mats. The straw mats could be made into small cushions or larger mattresses; you could also make thicker mats and tie large bundles of dried grass tightly together, fixing them under the mattress and laying the animal skins on them. A simple straw bed like this will not only keep the moisture out of the ground, but will also reduce the lurking danger of serious fire.

Because of the long-lasting bedding of hay, there was a lot of hay scattered around the tent which could easily cause a fire if ignited by the oil from the drip fall from the torch. Now with the straw bed, the hay was largely secured and the tent could simply be cleaned from the grass scraps. This grass bed would last at least a year as long as it was regularly dragged out to dry. There was also no need to gather hay so frequently and it was easy to weave it. Qin Fei also thought he could make a bed and try it out if conditions allowed.

Qin Fei saw that everyone had mastered the technique of making the straw mattress, so while everyone was talking about it, he slipped away to the river. At the river’s edge were several thin slab stones that looked a bit like frying pans. The surface of the bottom was very intact and very flat but long and narrow. It had a shorter and vertical outer edge which was perfect for frying. Qin Fei carefully scrubbed the slabs stone with water and left them to dry by the river so he could use it to cook delicious food in the evening.
