Kai racked his brain as he ran through the forest. Of course, he was keeping where he was heading, otherwise, he would be lost in this place dyed in all white.

'The third level of magic is spells, it should just be the same as casting the first level, right…?' Kai has no doubts about his skills but the situation is really too much for him to test it. If he fails, his head will be off his head. Magic coyotes in the land and magic hawks in the air.

This is too scary, okay?

He's not as fast as them, you know? They're quickly catching up to him. If he turns around to cast the spell and fails to do so, he's dead! Kai's not afraid of death, but these guys, will they kill him fast? Will his death be painless?

Look at those sharp claws, beaks, and fangs that are covered with saliva, there's no doubt that they have rabies, don't they? Won't they tear his skin, gnaw on his flesh until they reach his bone until he dies of blood loss and severity of the wounds? That's too scary! Kai wanted to cry, he really do.

He choked in his own sobs and gathered his remaining courage. He'll just run out of stamina and they will catch up immediately once he slows down. It's better to act quickly. First, Kai made a pitfall behind him for the coyotes. They could just jump over it but it would at least confuse them for a moment and bring some more time for Kai to deal with his hungry enemies in the sky. Of course, there's no way that these hawks are slower than him. They're not the same as the ones from Kai's world. After all, these beasts lived in a place with a high level of magic concentration. They're naturally far from those inferior versions of his world.

'Oh please let me succeed."

Kai kept his eyes open as he swiftly turned around. He didn't want to miss out on even a simple detail. Kai raised his hand and determinedly cast the magic. "Freeze the wings!"

Casting a spell is similar to casting creation magic. Only, spells are more specific and could be manipulated to whatever the caster wants.

Ice started up in the hawk's wings and quickly spread to its entire body. Distracted by the weight and coldness of their body, the hawks missed their target, which was originally supposed to be Kai. But they crashed into trees again in an attempt to break the ice. They were similar to the wolf beasts back then. Their weaknesses are all cold.

Despite the spell working on his first try, Kai didn't have time to bathe in happiness. There were still coyote beasts behind him and he still needed to completely freeze the hawks. As for dealing with the coyotes, he simply did the same as he did to the wolf beasts.

Once all done, Kai weakly fell to his knees, breathing with difficulty. "Really not my thing… I can protect myself, that's true but at what cost…?"

Tiring himself is not really what he enjoys. He prefers staying at the castle and reading. Kai was more of an indoor person after all.

Also, casting magic drains one's mind and body. Kai felt his eyes getting heavy and struggled to keep himself awake. He tried to stand up again only to fail and fall. But before he could feel the cold snow on the ground, a familiar smell entered his nose and an arm mostly covered with a black robe wrapped around him. The warmth of another person only added to his tiredness. But before he could drift to the dark abyss called sleep, he finally heard the familiar voice of the person he has always wanted to see for the past three months.

"You're so stupid…"

Well of course, who was he to be called a genius just because he was able to cast the level three classification of magic within three months? It's just something that can be done by one in one million people. He was nothing special.

-

Helix pressed his palm on top of Kai's forehead, casting a 'healing' spell. His expression didn't change even a bit as he stared at the other person's sleeping face. They were back in the castle, and Kai's plan to visit the village was yet again canceled. When Kai's fever finally cooled down, Helix separated his hand from Kai and sighed, looking at this person whose expression now loosened up compared to earlier.

He has a lot of things to say but for now, Helix calmly held his words back to himself and silently watched over Kai as he sleeps. His achievements are not so surprising to him. After all, Helix was very well aware of Kai's talent to learn very quickly. However, just because it is not surprising, it does not mean that it is not worthy of Helix's compliments. Although he himself was able to reach the third level in just a week, Kai's talent is very much special as well. He won't be able to reach the last level but his foundation is strong and very much stable.

He won't be swayed by dark magic either. Even without Helix's guidance, Kai would soar higher. Kai's assets were not only magic. He was also skilled at concocting pills, either herbal or magic, though that was before he lost his memories. Helix has no doubts that he will regain his skills in concocting magic pills though. Then, with his physique, if he trains with patience and with a good teacher, he will be able to learn the way of the sword and martial arts.

Kai is different from Helix.

All that he can do is magic. He even fell to the temptation of dark magic and he is already bound to the empire. His future is dark and bleak, was there even hope for someone like him?

Suddenly, the person lying on the bed suddenly opened his eyes. Helix was not even prepared and couldn't leave on time with his teleportation magic. He wanted to leave as soon as he fixes Kai's condition. He didn't think that he would be distracted by his own thoughts…

Kai, who immediately found Helix by his side, was not even a little bit surprised. He only smiled weakly and muttered, "So you're finally back after three months, huh?" Helix didn't reply and wanted to stand up instead but as if his thoughts were predicted by Kai, Kai grabbed his hand swiftly and sat up. His body was constantly aching and he could barely stand it. The only thing that's supporting him is his other arm.

The two faced each other in silence and Kai was the first one to break it. "I waited for three months and you're leaving again as soon as I wake up? You're a little bit too cruel, don't you think so, master?" Helix was not going to go soft either. "Touching me, you wish to feel some pain, Zein?"

The tension rose. Kai didn't let him go and Helix raised his other hand.

However, that's all that Helix did. He merely raised his hand and didn't hit him. With lips twitched slightly and glared lightly at the other person as he lowered his hand. "I'm not leaving so let me go." Kai was not reassured one bit but he let go anyway. His whole body is already aching, he doesn't want Helix's super, extremely painful hits to add to his injuries.

Kai smiled brightly and excitedly told, completely ignoring the tension from earlier, "I was able to understand and cast level two magic two days ago! And then today, I also learned how to cast level three magic!" Like a dog waiting for the master's praise and pats, Kai looked at Helix with so much expectation that the other could almost see a golden retriever's tail wagging behind Kai.

"... That's… That's not something anybody could do. It seems that you're really quite something, you haven't even learned the third level yet but you courageously went to the lair of those magic beasts. Truly, so…"

"... Lair?"

"You— The place you ran into was the lair of those beasts. Although you managed to take down those measly numbers of magic beasts, there was no doubt that there were more coming. Also, you lost consciousness? You would've been made into beast's food if I didn't come."

Kai's expression didn't change but he was still speechless. But Helix wasn't even done yet! "Though, since you were unconscious, you would've been turned into beast food without feeling any pain. I guess you don't really mind death as long as it's painless?" Helix's casual tone made it even more painful for Kai. "I didn't know, okay…?" He sighed very deeply and started to rethink his life choices. It seems that he's really lucky. Time and time again, he kept being saved by this person in the most crucial moment. Perhaps this person is really godsent. Screw that author who wrote him off so ugly. Look at this man, acting like a Saintess!

Truthfully, he really just wanted to be praised. Why did he learn that he was almost killed instead? Kai's mood turned gloomy immediately. Helix watched as this person's mood changed so quickly. He was so happy just a moment ago but now?

With a soft sigh, Helix stood up from his seat and turned around. But before he left, he looked at Kai, who had an indescribable expression on his face. "Why are you so anxious? I'll come back, just wait." Because of the painful feeling Kai gets whenever he moves an inch, he unwillingly lets the other person go, gritting and grinding his teeth against each other as he watches the leaving figure of the other person.
