I had no delusions that the BoS were extinct. A significant blow was dealt, but I’m sure that we’ll see more of them in the future. Plus we had other priorities now than marching west to clear up all their holdings.
The Nexus left the Capital Wasteland after one day of purging. I let the Companies do some small genocides on raider super mutant camps while the robot army swept through the ruins of the city. At the same time, the area around the Citadel’s void was cordoned off, for when we returned to fill in the hole and rebuild the Pentagon and a taskforce of boring, vanilla sentry bots and assaultrons were used to patrol the basic wall of metal and concrete. These bots were surpluses from the conversion to Centurions and Eversors, since the Nexus was slowing down on that and moving onto our own designs like the Strigoi.
Other than that, everything else left east for home. For the time being, only eyebots scanned the ruins of major cities that we passed by, keeping tabs for future expansions. With so much wasteland and ruins between Boston and DC, trying to claim everything we came across felt overly ambitious. So once we were clear from the Capital Wasteland, everything on the ground got teleported back to the Nexus, including the Corrino. The Kirov kept at a high altitude to enjoy a lazy flight back, simply because the people stationed there enjoyed the view, and there weren’t any pressing issues at the time.
The loot salvaged off the Citadel before it was voided into space proved to be…mediocre at best in its potential at furthering our research, but the amount of power armor and guns would be more gear for destructive testing at least. The so-called ‘archives’ of the Brotherhood was all obsolete tech that offered a few measly branches of potential ideas. Nothing of the dangerous old-world tech that I was hoping for. I felt as disappointed as an Asian parent when their kid got a measly B+.
Still, there was significant value in other information gleaned from prisoners and the loot. Our maps could be updated with information about the west, which would prove useful. Details about the factions and other places of interest in the West, as speculative as some might be, would also serve us well when the Nexus starts pushing in that direction.
For the time being, I wanted to finish up on ensuring that life within the existing borders was as good as it could be. With the rads cleared out and proper greenery slowly being reintroduced to our lands, the goal was now to build up the surface for not only habitation, but to provide decent working conditions as well. Not everyone could be artisans, entertainers or farmers after all.
We had our first supermarkets up. It was an initiative from Alexis and Tina, and with just a small, interest free loan, they built up a chain of semi-automated stores that allowed residents a more varied catalog to topping up their daily lifestyle with non-essential, non-basic goods. The partially human staff also meant that the supermarkets was a source of employment for anyone needing a few creds before they found their dream job or something.
Now it was just a matter of making sure that there were goods to be sold. To that end, smaller, safer factories were set up, prepared to be converted to serve the needs of various industries. It was already showing some promise, one was bought to be turned into a brewery, while a few others processed some of our raw metals into decorative plates and other ornamental metalwork. Applications to produce plastic toys, apparel, and mattresses were under review as well.
Another little luxury the Nexus set up were education centers. More than just primary and secondary schools, with the aid of the highly skilled professionals from Vault 81, the wasteland in general, or even the defected BoS, the Nexus now offered vocational and tertiary education as well. It wasn’t packed, but enrollment was well about seventy percent, which was more than enough for me to be happy about. Curie was a frequent guest there for medical lectures, though Piper and Cait preferred their work in admin instead of catching up with their education.
There were still a bit more things the Nexus needed to establish, but ultimately the biggest thing we needed was time to settle in. With how fast things had grown over the past year, the girls had brought up a valid point that people needed to feel like they were natives of the Nexus, something the constant massive influx of people didn’t help with. So: Cool down for a bit and let people feel like actual citizens. A small trickle of migrants would serve as a reminder of why they were here in the Nexus, but wouldn’t affect community bonding too much.
The focus on stabilization also meant that plans had to be drawn up to annex the rest of Boston and the surrounding ruins. A deal was struck with the Minutemen, where they’d keep to patrolling the much safer lands beyond the Nexus, but once the lands known as the Commonwealth came fully under Nexus rule, we’d incorporate the Minutemen as a human police force or even offer to convert them to their own Companies if they wanted to undergo the extra training.
Another group that needed repurposing was the Railroad. After their bittersweet completion of their main mission, a good number of their members left, though Desdemona the rest were now seeking something new. With their experience as infiltrators and data sifters, I gave them an offer being a part of founding the Nexus’ official intelligence agency. And so the Railroad became the Nexus Intelligence Network. Other than the standard counterespionage, they’d be taking a load off Eva’s processing burdens by managing appropriate tasks like handling the eyebots and processing the background checks of migrants.
A new AI was created for the NIN, based off Curie and Eva’s programming. Of course, I called it Cabal, and I considered it as Eva’s younger brother. The vehicle specific AIs like Kirov and Corrino, I saw as Eva’s offspring or splinters.
With Cabal up and running domestic and foreign affairs, so to speak, Eva was free to focus on research and military matters. Both AIs would store their information in a central database, and would have the same access through the entire thing to allow for quick referencing. It would be needed too, since theoretically spies tracked by Cabal might be sent off to Tleilax under Eva’s research division, and might need to be reclaimed by Cabal for additional interrogation.
I still preferred only calling on Eva in my room though…feels way more comfortable to hear the female voice compared to Cabal’s masculine one during or after dicking sessions.
With things slowing to a more sedate pace, I was able to go through the priorities list and work on smaller, faster to resolve (theoretically) issues. Like confirming the official home sports of Diamond City Stadium, greenlighting content for broadcasting that needed it (like reenactments or ‘documentaries’ of my short time here…denied all of them without hesitation), verifying the rumors that Nora was stuffing herself with Dogmeat’s dog meat, and looking into the immortal Cabots.
I honestly didn’t need to deal with at least one of those things.
