Early morning.

The bright light from the rising Sun creeps in from the windowsill to lay on the leaves of a quiet potted plant whose glossy green leaves stretched out with a few tiny white flowers blooming in between them. Having had enough of the potted plant, the Sun continues to rise into the glass window and shines down a delicate sleeping face, which resembles a smiling lotus with smudges of pink.

Sunshine caressed the sleeping face of a woman sleeping and the man beside her looked almost a little jealous. He was jealous of the warmth of the Sun that could be more honest than himself. It could touch her without hesitation..

He, on the other hand, had his large hand hovering over her cheek1, clearly lusting after her warmth, but too shy to reach her in fear of disturbing her dreams.

Ever since he was a child, he had never been so uncertain about anyone. No one had ever made him want to be so intimate before. But when he was this close, he felt a little frightened. He had not intended to open his heart to anyone, but she insisted on making her way in…

“Good morning.” She unexpectedly opened her eyes and sweetly smiled, not giving him the opportunity to prepare himself. His heart raced apace and he looked away caught in embarrassment, feeling she had caught him red-handed.

“Did you sleep well?” She murmured softly. Compared to his shyness, she was acting more certain, her jade hand naturally stroked his masculine cheek.

“Not bad.” He sat up suddenly, ruffling his unruly hair in a slightly agitated manner.

“Come on, I promise I won’t laugh at your hair anymore.” She wrapped her arms around his waist from behind and pouted endearingly. “Don’t be angry, my good husband.”

He froze, blushing slightly at the playfulness of her call.

That’s right, he had married Mo Chuan Ya two months ago and had been living together for two months as newlyweds. This was not the first time he had heard his wife call him husband, but it was still as exciting as the first time he had heard it.

“Why are you still not talking?” Mo Chuan Ya misunderstood his silence. “I’ve already apologised to you, you cheapskate!” She turned him around and stepped with her bare feet on his thick feet like a cute little penguin, cuddling up to him.

He finally couldn’t restrain himself and bent down his head to kiss her sweet, seductive lips.

It was a long time before they parted with a sharp breath, and she gazed at him with reluctance, “You’re going to leave for the hospital soon, right?”

He took a deep breath and nodded resolutely. Even though he felt pity, he still tried his best to suppress the flame that was strongly burning his insides.

“I’ve got a press conference today at nine in the morning, too.” She let a sighed escape.

“Then go, brush your teeth and wash your face.”

“YESSIR!”

Thanks to their work habits, both possessed the ability to freshen up and change in the shortest possible time. Five minutes later, Dai Xingren was already standing on the balcony, doing a routine set of frantic morning exercises, having also dragged his wife along with him.

Mo Chuan Ya was not in the habit of doing morning exercises, and she once laughed at him for acting like a high school student. But he said that a responsible doctor should maintain a healthy body in order to persuade his patients to do the same, and as a doctor’s wife, she, of course, must also be a good example.

Could she play dumb with such a big hat on her head?

So she resigned herself to his daily morning body mania and sit-ups every evening. At night, he would also do at least twenty push-ups, which she was forgiven for lazing and skipping.

After the full set of exercises, Mo Chuan Ya went to work on her make-up in front of the mirror while Dai Xingren went to the kitchen to make coffee, a few slices of toast and fry some eggs.

“You’re quick.” After dressing up, Mo Chuan Ya lightly sat down at the table, picked up a piece of crispy toast and took a bite, “Mmm… it’s delicious!” She exclaimed happily.

It’s just a piece of toast, was it worthy of this look on her face?

Dai Xingren looked at her incredulously, but was also infected by his wife’s good mood. The corners of his lips ended up curling subtly.

“By the way, I got a call from my mother yesterday asking if we were free to come home for dinner this Saturday?” Mo Chuan Ya said with a smile, while she buttered the toast and sandwiched the poached eggs between them for her husband. “Are you on duty this Saturday night?”

“Let me think about it.” Dai Xingren took the egg toast handed by his wife, took a bite, and calculated his rotation schedule in his mind. “I have to be on duty that day.”

“So?” Mo Chuan Ya had anticipated this possibility and immediately suggested a solution. “Well, I’ll ask Mum if I can change it to Sunday. You’re always free on Sunday evenings, right?”

“Well, I should be able to make it there after work.”

“All right then, that’s it.” Mo Chuan Ya took out her mobile and texted her mother to reschedule the dinner date to Sunday night. She got an answer half a minute later. “Mum says OK.”

“That’s good.” Dai Xingren breathed a sigh of relief. He didn’t want to disappoint his mother-in-law soon after getting married.

Mo Chuan Ya observed the look on her husband’s face and giggled.

He looked at her in confusion. “What are you laughing at again?”

“Xingren, you really like my mother, don’t you?” She looked at him with a smile.

He was dumb struck and a little downthroden as he took a moment to hide his eyes by the motion of sipping his coffee. “Your mother is very nice.”

“What’s so great about it? Do you respect her because she’s a strong, decisive business woman?”

“…”

“I don’t think so.” She offered her own answer. “It’s because my mother reminds you of your own mother whom you’ve never met, isn’t it?”

He shuddered and raised his eyes to look at his wife.

She was looking at him, too. Her eyes were full of affection with teary tenderness, “Xingren, you have always refused to tell me, what did you tell my mother when you came to our house to “propose marriage” that day?”

He was speechless, remembering the sincere conversation with his mother-in-law, his chest full of mixed feelings. That day, he had expected to be coldly kicked out, but instead he unexpectedly was received with a spring breeze that thawned his frozen heart.

“Didn’t I tell you not to ask again?” He mumbled gruffly.

“But I am curious.” She relented. “Who told you and Mum to be so secretive? You don’t tell me!”

“There’s nothing to tell.” He finished his coffee, gathered the dishes and put them in the kitchen sink, “You can wash these.”

“Xingren…”

“I’m going to the hospital.” He hurried off.

You want to hide? Mo Chuan Ya stared at his back annoyed, not letting him get away so easily. She picked up her bag and went after him, reaching out to take his arm.

“Hey, you…” He hesitantly stared at both of their intimately interlocked arms. This flat they had rented was near the hospital and at any moment they might run into colleagues or patients who knew them well.

“Are you afraid of being seen by others?” She saw through his concerns and grimaced at him. “So what? We are husband and wife! Newlyweds are supposed to be sweet, don’t you think so?”

Dai Xingren frowned. He had always given the impression of being lonely and difficult to get along with, but now he was holding hands with his wife and frolicking on the road. What kind of behaviour was that?

“Xingren, look!” She raised her voice in surprise and pointed to a kitten lying lazily on the concrete fence by the side of the road. “What a tiny little cat, is it a newborn? It’s so cute!”

She let go of his hand and ran towards the kitten, stroking its soft fur lovingly and trying to pick it up.

“Be careful!” He stopped her cautiously, “What if he’s sick?”

“He’s so clean, how could he be sick?” She gave him a look of disgust. “Is that all you can think about?”

He glared at her in frustration. Yes, he just didn’t know how to be romantic. When others saw cute little animals, they might rush to take care of them, but he wouldn’t.

“Kitty, come to sister, give me a hug.” Mo Chuan Ya coaxed softly. Her hands had just touched the kitten when a fat female cat sprang out of nowhere, grinned at her, slapped her hand away, and picked up her child.

“Whoa!” She was taken aback and quickly backed away.

“What’s wrong? Are you all right?” Dai Xingren ran over to her in a panic and took her hand to examine it.

“Luckily, you’re not scratched.”

“Is that the kitten’s mother? Why is she so mean?” Mo Chuan Ya stared back in resignation as the mother cat glared at her fiercely with her kitten in her mouth, then turned away proudly and walked away.

“What a drag…” She muttered.

Dai Xingren looked at the mother cat’s straight back, and then at his wife’s pitiful expression, and a laugh rolled down his throat, uncontrollably.

She was startled. “What are you laughing at?”

“So this is what happens to people like you who know how to have fun,” He teased her nonchalantly, his starry eyes shining.

At first, Mo Chuan Ya was a little exasperated, but gradually, looking at her husband’s bright smile, her heart inexplicably soared, flying high and leaping in the air.

He stopped laughing in confusion. “What’s wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Isn’t there a lot more to laugh about in life than you can imagine?”

He was stunned to realise that he had inadvertently violated the principles he had always lived by. He had laughed in the streets. How embarrassing would it be if someone he knew saw him?

He didn’t laugh, at least not at trivial things, but she was able to make those non-trivial to him.

She smiled sweetly, her eyebrows arched in a way that captivated him. Then she stepped up on her toes and kissed him lightly on the cheek. “Bye, honey, see you tomorrow night!”
